@@Andrew-hh3ol That reminds me once my brother also tried putting gasoline from an old car that had been sitting for like 37 years in his old mercedes diesel and it worked! :P
@@TRLC , the only reason you don’t use old gas is because it’s harder to burn, and when it does burn it hurts your engine, if you put that gas in a race engine you’ll probably detonate and gum up your valves
I finished my high school graduation project two months ago. The purpose of it was to make a racing fuel by myself. My teacher knew someone who works at Shell, and next thing I know I'm working together with Shell on this project. I ended up using MTBE too, which was very expensive to get, and after I calculated the perfect amount of additive MTBE needed for my fuels, I had to use special safety equipment to blend it with the base fuel I used. Over at Shell they were so impressed that they offered to run tests on the fuels at their refinery in Rotterdam (NE). They tested it and they gave it it's own lable, which was very cool. They told me that my fuel was of very high quality, and they could sell it for a very high price per liter. That is also the reason it is not available at gas stations, because very few people would actually use fuel that is that expensive. But after all, I scored a 10 on my project so I'm happy :).
And everybody clapped

How about 100LL that you can get at small airports
How bout that premix you get a Lowe’s
The aircraft fuel is good I know a guy who will only run that in his classics I could be wrong but I think that it also still contains lead
100LL is about $4.50 a gallon last I checked. I run it in my race bike with 14.5:1 compression as a budget alternative to 100+ octane racing gas. In a standard motor it won't make any difference. Also, if you get caught running it on the street you can get in some massive trouble for tax and lead emissions reasons.

I've had dozens of high performance sport bikes, quads, and SxS's over the years. The only ones I've ever ran special fuel in was the Banshees. I really enjoyed the format of this video with all the science explained simply in practice
Great video! As a Shell engineer, the quality of the gas is important (use Top Tier) but the ECM in your car will only generate the highest power with the Octane fuel that it is designed for. Using any other octane is simply a waste of money.
Not entirely true. Higher grades (read higher octane) burn smoother and even a lower compression engine will run more efficiently on higher octane. I've proved this dozens of times on dozens of cars I serviced.
@@LanceisLawson sorry - absolutely untrue. The engine will use the Octane it requires and adding anything “extra” will do nothing but empty your wallet faster.
Unless you tune the ecu for higher octane, which is mostly for forced induction cars. Ethanol is great for making power!
@@AB-jk7twexactly, higher octane just means more resistance to knock. I would like to see how he proved it. Prob floored it with 87 in and then babied it with 91/93 in and said look better mpg!

In europe, slovenia at least we have min 95 octane with 100 being high octane
Probably RON, so equivalent to around 91 to 93.
Not the same index, I had to check on Wikipedia.
Europe uses RON (a simulation based on low regime) while US uses AKO (a simulation based on between low and high regime : AKI = (RON + MON)/2 , MON being high regime octane).
You have : 95MON = 90AKI and 98RON=93MON
Not only compression
The timing curve makes a difference also

Look up boostane
Use Sunoco race fuels, it’s HALF the price of VP and it’s the same stuff or even better depending on what you’re using...
Unless you have a very high compression dirt bike, you're not going to gain anything running anything more than 87 or 89 octane (or whatever your bike lists for what is required), just a giant waste of money. The only exception is when you get ethanol-free race fuel. Technically, 10% ethanol pump gas produces about 3% less HP per unit of fuel than 100% gas does, so on a non-fuel injected engine, that could translate to a couple HP.
@@racerex340 I just normally use 91octan
@@yeahsure933 yeah, my old kawasaki 250 2-stroke had higher compression and liked at least 91.
Higher octane is simply to prevent pinking/pre-detonation on high compression engines cos the heat generated by the compression can cause the fuel to ignite before the spark, kinda like a diesel engine, messing up timing and messing up the pistons and valves.
Edit - I've only got about halfway through, but I'm shocked that wasn't mentioned already.

6:18 jet fuel is basically diesel with additives to prevent water from binding to the fuel... In other words you might actually get it to start as it roughly takes 10000 x longer to lose it potency via evaporation compared to gasoline. However you would have to heat it first to de-gel it... Aviation fuel (prop plane) on the other hand is gasoline with lead
Military jet fuel (JP-5) is actually just kerosene with certain additives. It can only be used in jet engines (that can run on everything, even perfumes), because it's cheap and lightweight.
Aviation gasoline (Avgas), however, could probably be put in a car and it will work. It's a little fancier race fuel. However, after such long time it must have evaporated.
