  • If you have never been in a Tesla before and is interested in trying one out as a rental car, then this is a quick crash course in how to use it. The Tesla is quite a bit different compared to "main stream" cars.
Different charging options are shown and getting energy for the car was no issue.
The trunk is also quite long/deep so three large suit cases and three smaller cases as luggage could be fitted.
At El Prat airport there are just a few Tesla Model 3 available and the cost for renting it is like any other mid sized sedan. Accordingly one will have to make the reservation well in time before arrival, the model 3 seems to be a popular option.
For vacation it is an extra interesting car to use since it offers Tesla´s unique camping mode for sleeping well in the car. Comparing to Tesla Model 3 of earlier model years, the newer ones now have a fold flat rear seat back rest. In this video, camping in an older Model 3 is shown:

In the following video, camping is also shown in an early Tesla Model S:

Did you have to return the car fully charged or were there charging points at the Hertz drop off spaces at Barcelona El Prat?
It seems as though the last thing you would want to do when going to catch a flight is to have to wait 45minutes to charge the car!

Hi Hodson. At the Hertz desk I asked the same thing. The reply I got was that if the car is returned with no less than 15 % less than what it had when picked up at the start of the rental (63 % in my case) then they would not charge me anything. A bit "disorganized" compared to London Heathrow where the car I got there had 75 % when I picked it up and also had to have 75 % upon the return of the car.
Tesla has a supercharger quite central in Barcelona and one more on the outskirts near Sabadell. There is a few AC chargers here and there in the streets, and over night any 10 A / 230 V socket can be used to add some energy. If I would have had my eyes more open in the Hotels garage upon arrival, then over night charging would have made the charge stop near Sabadell unnecessary.

Do they provide you with the type 2 (mennekes) cable?

Hi. Yes the car had the cables needed for the two options of AC charging that exists. Type 2 for public AC charging that typically can be around 11 to 22 kW and the other type (Schuko?) used for AC sockets giving some 2 to 3 kW.

Why didn't you try to connect it to the Tesla app? Would be nice to know if you can forget about the card.

Hi. Good question. I just double checked the info from Hertz about this, only key fob or key card is mentioned. Maybe phone as key is a bit more complicated to administrate and get going for a rental company.

As Hertz did an enormous order from Tesla, I thought the carmaker would check about this and let the driver have the full experience for the cars... interesting they don't.
      Thanks for your double-check! @@hoojiesgarage1542

Hi. How did you pay at Supercharger? They associate your credit card to the car or with your user account in the Tesla app.

Hi. The Supercharger identifies which car it is that is charging during the "handshake" phase between the car and the charger. Or if it the car that sends the charging data. I do not know if it is the charger or the car that register the cost and sends it to Tesla. Probably the charger since non-Teslas also can charge on a lot of Superchargers via a Tesla app. Either way, the cost then goes directly to Hertz and they add the cost to the rental bill that one has to pay.

@@hoojiesgarage1542 Ok, so Hertz pays Tesla and you pay Hertz. Thanks
