- Car rental companies are starting to bring in electric cars to their fleets. How was it to rent a Polestar 2 from Hertz at the Heathrow airport, and drive down to Gunwharf Quays and back? Should I have chosen a Tesla model 3 instead?
Later I did rent a Tesla, but that was not at Heathrow, instead that was made at El Prat outside Barcelona:

Super useful video, thanks for sharing it. After several years of renting ICE-cars from Europcar at Heathrow, I've reserved a Polestar 2 for a forthcoming trip. It will be interesting to see what state of charge I find when I arrive and how it affects my plans to drive 200km from the airport via a very patchy Shell network.
One question: if 300 miles are included and you stayed within the mileage limit, did you pay anything for the charging you did with the Shell fob? My rental is a bit longer and has 900 miles included, so has the potential to be cheaper than renting an ICE-car and being responsible for the costs of unleaded fuel.
Hi James. As I understood it there should have come some cost for the charge stop at Shell and it should have been quite a bit cheaper than handing back the car with state of charge below 75%. There is nothing on the bill though.
What I don't understand is why did you charge specifically at this shell garage? Rapid/ultra rapid charging varies from 50-250kw at Shell recharge stations and there would've been a faster one somewhere along your route that could've got you juiced up far quicker. Also charging above 80% on any public charger regardless of the max output will take forever.
Also some companies (including Shell) charge less for the slower AC charging, so a local without a home charge point could potentially leave their car onsite for a few hours and it wouldn't cost them 79p a kwh.
Hi Picky. It was chosen for its location near the road to Heathrow by taking a look at a Shell site. Can´t remember if the chargers output was stated on the site at that point in time. At a glance it looked like a good option. Since then (autumn 2022) things might very well have developed a bit.
You can charge anywhere…..not just shell.
Yes, of course. Shell was used just because Hertz at that point in time had teamed up with Hertz. The charge networks of all brands/energy providers are expanding and slowly charging gets less and less complicated.
was there much of a wait to pick the car up? did they work with you to put any apps onto your phone for the car or to help with charging? does the car have an onboard map with charging options? i’ve used ZapMap last time.
Hi Owen. Pick up was swift, might depend on day and time etc. No Hertz did not put any apps into my phone. The car has google maps in it so whatever you can find there, the car will show you. That could have been an option to search for the Shell charge station, but I happened to locate it at Shells website on my computer before heading up to Heathrow again.
Please can you tell me more about the Shell fob you got with the car? Was the cost of recharging included in the rental or did you still have to pay for it?
Hi Mauri. When picking up the car my understanding was that the cost for charging at Shell would be added to the bill, but that cost was never added. Conditions may however vary over time so I would advise you to ask Hertz about the situation when you will rent the car..
