  • Well--I thought I could cut the flowers off my calathea but it turns out that I can't. Hang out with me while I show the three different calathea flowering in my house right now and a little bit about their care.

    The only indoor plant that I give worm castings is the calathea in every spring and every time a week after I put down the worm castings it starts to triple the foliage and blooming. It’s automatic they love it

      That’s interesting, I’ve had a growing collection of Prayer Plants (18 to date) and their main growth period is Autumn/Winter! their choice! I just up the frequency of liquid seaweed fertiliser in that period to accommodate them ! ✌️

    I prefer to let my calatheas bloom - those tiny blooms just make ME happy as I know it means those plants are getting what they need and "living their best life"! 😂

    My Calathea Medallion is also flowering indoors. I have 1 flower for weeks now and it's starting to shoot out another one. Don't really know what to do....they are beautifull.

    I found this video very confusing. You haven't once mentioned why you were not thrilled about the flowers and why you initially wanted to cut them off. Why? I thought getting a plant to bloom is the ultimate goal of plant keepers. If after an infection and infestation they bloom, doesn't it mean you did everything right?

      I can’t speak for Addy but time and again in my 50+years in horticulture I’ve observed that plants and trees often flower due to stress, like they’re trying to reproduce ( through seed from the blooms) before they die. We often remove flowers to save energy for better growth when a houseplant is primarily a foliage plant. ✌️

    My calathea Medaillon is non stop blooming since it got it. First I thought that's normally for each growth to flower once it matures as it it with some orchids.
    Is it still able to grow new leaves from the growths that have flowered or do I get new leaves only from new growths?

    Hi
    Thanks for the wonderful clip and the very useful information. One qestion though: shall the flower stems be cut off or just left there until the die naturally (if they ever do die)?

    Thank you for your videos. It helped me so much with caring for Calatheas! One thing I’m not sure of is pruning. Can you please tell me how you do it? Do you cut the dead leaf from the end of the leaf or cut off the whole stem? I remember hearing it somewhere that keep the stem can let new leaf grow out of there, is that true?

    As always, I enjoy watching your videos as I'm a huge fan of calatheas just like you! I like your medallion and sadly I don't have much luck with mine, got it home all good then in 2 weeks time, the leaves got droopy and the stems got bent. I've no idea why this happened to my medallion.
    FYI, I water all my calathea (indoor) once a week with distilled water and fertlize once a month. I paid a huge price by killing my crimson and burning down a lot of leaves of my dottie with a liquid fertlizer based on its recommended dosage. It hurt some of my calatheas and the worst hit was the crimson and dottie. Since then, I cut the dosage by half. I don't use the fish fertilizer as the seller said it wasn't recommended for indoor plants due to its strong smell.
    On another note, you mentioned you rinsed down your medallion with tap water to burn the mites. I wonder how does that help? because of the chlorine?

      You might try Watering your kladias with rainwater and water them when they're almost dry I stick my finger down the pot and water it when it's 3/4 dry but never let it completely dry out. I also mist mine with Rainwater once in the morning.

    Two questions, 1. How do you think my calatheas will do in a west facing window (3 hrs sun/sitting back 4 ft from window)? I've had mine for 2 months, they're all growing so far. 2. You talk about dealing with spider mites alot. Do you know why you're constantly getting them?

    Great video. I have a side note question. What is the best way to water calathea? I don’t water all the way through, letting water drain out. I give mine sips of water until moist bc I’m afraid of overwatering. But I read mixed things about this. Should I use enough water that it drains from the holes?

    • @icemancometh8679
      @icemancometh8679 Před 3 lety +1

      Water and Mist with rain water and do the finger test- when the soils dry halfway through or 3/4 through that's when you can water- never let the plant completely dry out. Bright light but not direct sunlight.

    • @Lara-wb5tl
      @Lara-wb5tl Před 3 lety +1

      i know this is an old comment, but in case you still need some advice: overwatering refers less to the amount of water and more to the frequency of waterings. even though calatheas like to be moist consistently, i like to let the first few inches of soil dry before i thoroughly water until water drains out of the pot. otherwise i get problems with roor rot or pests quickly. your method could work too, and if your plant seems happy with it continue. personally i would be afraid that not every area of the soil and roots get reached by the water and may cause underwatering.

    What to do with the flowers when they are finished blooming? Do you cut off the flowers or will the plant itself take care of this? My Calathea Warscewiczii was so beautifull and thriving, had amazing leaves and got 2 pretty flowers. Now the flowers are finished blooming and they are turning brown, also some more leaves are turning yellow/brown. It looks like it's suffering, does this has anything to do with the dead flowers you think? Please help

    Hello, my calathea warscewiczii is flowering! All of my calathea are infested with spider mites. I have tried everything to get rid of them and nothing is working. I am also interested in your fertilizer. Can I get worm castings from Amazon? You might have it listed below but I was so excited to see your video that I commented before looking below! Thanks for keeping us informed!

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 2 lety

      Some of of my calathea are flowering right now, too! It is so exciting to see. Yes, you should be able to buy worm castings through Amazon. For spider mites, I have a real battle on my hands here, too. I rinse them off and then treat topically with a diluted neem oil though it will make the plants more sensitive to any direct light. I've tried a neem oil soil drench in the past but have had trouble keeping up with it but I'll likely go back to as we move toward summer--I have a video on it somewhere if you're interested in seeing it. I would also say that some people have good luck with using diatomaceous earth; I have some but haven't used it yet. My plan is to really keep on top of rinsing my plants and checking the leaves often to keep spider mites from getting any stronger of a foothold. Good luck!

    • @HBgirlie1
      @HBgirlie1 Před 2 lety

      @@AddyBeez Thank you for your response. I would be interested in that video if it's not too hard to find. I have diatomaceous earth but it is just a mess to use. I guess I'll continue to rinse the leaves as well but I am definitely losing this battle and am afraid I'm going to lose all my plants. Thanks again!

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 2 lety +1

      @@HBgirlie1 That is why I haven't applied the diatomaceous earth. I'll be updating on my collection one by one soon with some of the plants having infestations. It may be helpful but it really is something that just comes in waves and sometimes I can get on top of it--other times I may lose a plant or two. Fingers crossed!

    worm castings are not necessarily a fertilizer.
    does your castings packaging have an NPK ratio?
