It's not that underrated. Squid Game is A LOT more popular but like 2 months later Alice in borderland blew up as well (Squid Game also has the big advantage of merch which worked great for Halloween, for AIB you can't really make any costumes)

Squid games was more grounded in reality that's why its more popular. Just look at the top shows and you'll see they're all like that. E.g. breaking bad, better call saul, etc.

The ending was so unexpected and unpredictable. I didn't saw it coming, the writers, director, and the casts did really an amazing and great job. Alice in Borderland is one of the best series on Netflix. I said what I said.

Dw, same here.. 😂It wasn't until I wiki the characters and saw the alias name under them that it connected to me LOL! Also Chishiya = Cheshire cat, Usagi = Rabbit, Banda Suto = Bandersnatcher, Yaba Oki = Jabberwocky. Theres a lot more names that connect with Alice in Wonderland but yeah its soo crazy how well thought out these names were and how they correlate with Alice in Wonderland references.

I can't believe they are actually making the games that were introduced as side stories in the Manga of Alice in borderland! while the main story continued, they always gave us a side story to see all different kinds of games with unnamed characters to keep us hooked, and seeing those characters also being introduced is amazing !! I'm not gonna lie they were even better than the original games of the main cast! this is all we could wish for!
I'm glad this series is actually more faithful to the source material than I thought. Adaptations like that are rare.

my only minor complain in this series adaptation is prob how they always include major characters like the main character on the supposed to be side story games and that lessens the suspense on whose going to win bcs mc can't die. One example is the goal game where they included Usagi and Arisu and it's just my guess but

Theyre prob including Chishiya on the Diamond of Hearts game which is a showcase game between 2 new characs who might have the possibility of getting overlooked.
But yeah, other than that. Im all good. And I also understand why they doing this tho. They had too little appearance in the manga especially Kuina and the Forensics gurl..

This was one of the best shows of 2020 on Netflix, I was so surprised that so many people slept on this one but then Squid Game blew up... Excited for Season 2!
Edit: I finished season 2 last week. It most certainly was not perfect, but there were some very well executed moments especially some spectacular hand to hand combat scenes. I have not read the manga, but the ending seems in line with what a manga would end an arc on. I LOVED the games, especially the ones involving Chishiya. No news of S3 yet, but I am intrigued enough to perhaps start the manga.
Korea film seem to market their stuff well in a way thats why.... Also Korea fan in general is HUGE..
But yeah, I like Squid Game but love Alice in Borderlands even more! is so underrated!

Squid game was really memeable. The track suits, the mask, the games were all pretty easy to replicate which help spread it to a wider audience.

Just finished season 2. All can i say is that it was a masterpiece, during the season there are some moments where i would say "wtf is this" like is stuff that are not possible or that seemed "to extra", but once you get to the ending of the season all of that makes sense!
We all know what's the epic scene this season, It's 1:22, Kuina and Ann are surely going to be the highlight! I'm glad their friendship did continue after the Beach arc, nothing beat a group that cover eachother's weakness, strong and smart, although Ann looks like she's gonna be badass not just the smartest character like how they introduced her. I'm so excited!

I watched this show after Squid Game because I thought it was similar. And I found the best world building I've ever seen. Every character is so incredibly written, creative, but with so many relatable elements. And it captures the Alice in Wonderland (which I adore) atmosphere so well.
I also watched it after SG and it turned out to be better. It's really underrated
Well Squid Game is more on the society/capitalism side of death game while AIB is apocalyptic death game just by looking at the world they're in. Also Japan has an obsession with death games so it's no surprise they're good at it

Oh myyy Godd. Didn't expect S2 to be this awesome, it was sooo good. Unlike many other thriller series like this, i didn't think that the ending would be so beautiful. I really adored the way things fell in place for everyone. I literally cried when Ann also made it. It was an wonderful series, so underrated. I wish some of the people portraying the face cards were alive too, like the king of clubs, king of diamonds and the queen of hearts. Mira is such a fabulous actress, I legit hated the king of spades. The most awesome game imo was the solitary confinement and the most brutal was the Beauty contest. Can't get over the series fr. A S3 can be about the joker card and the permanent citizens 😍

@@jerintasnim2579 Borderland was basically a test to see how strong your will to live is. If you died in Borderland, you died in real life and vice versa. Since a meteor hit Shibuya, the people in that area were sent to borderland. At the end, the survivors could decide if they wanted to become citizens of Borderland or go back to the real world.
The Joker at the very end symbolizes the ferryman aka the bridge.
Time is much faster in Borderland, while in the real world only 1 minute has passed.

@@hanmira No, the doctors said "she's back" and they were going to continue with her operation. I believe that Ann managed to survive (barely) because of her will to live just before she died. When she said to Kuina that they would be friends if they met again. Also, just after the final game, Kuina held Ann's hand while saying "let's go back together". So Ann might have been transported back to the real world because Kuina was holding her hand but basically, it's both their will for Ann to live was what made her return alive.
Alice in Borderland released way before squid game and it deserved more recognition for sure. I am happy that Netflix is finally releasing season 2 of this beautiful japanese masterpiece. Hope it gains the same attention as squid game now.

Ahhh, I like AIB but the cinematography and acting level in Squid Game is just on a whole other level tbh. Koreans in general are just better at making movies/series than the rest of their Asian counterparts imo, and I've watched A LOT of both Korean, Japanese, and Chinese movies/series over the last years

Squid games came out when the whole world was inside at peak covid lockdowns, so there were more eyes on it. Alice in Borderland came out roughly 19 days before covid became headline news and broke for the first time. I think they are both great shows but I personally like AIB a little bit better.
I really hope they nail the philosophical aspects of the story which they seem to be focusing on alot more here. The manga's whole theme on what is the meaning of living for you was my favorite thing that I took from this story. Its so profound and I liked how different everyone's answers were.

Just completed the whole season and I definitely loved it more than the Squid game. Its ending is what shook me and I was pumped even at the end of the last episode. This is by far my favorite series of all time and I can watch it again. I can't imagine it's not as popular as the Squid game.

I'm so mad this series is criminally underrated.
This show is literally one of the best Netflix Show . I generally don't compare shows with other shows but when I saw the popularity of squid game it made me sad how this masterpiece goes unnoticed and one korean series with the same concept gets more attention than it deserved . And the ending of the squid game is so predictable it is no fun to watch. Netflix should promote this more .
SG really nailed the marketing. The distinctive costumes and repetitive musical motifs are really ingrain themselves in the mind. Plus as you point out the storyline of SG was very easy to follow making it accessible to the masses who usually wouldn't watch foreign content.

Nah, squid game has a way more gripping storyline while Alice only had 3 interesting episodes at 1,2 & 4 and good-looking leads other than that everything were underwhelming.
They were superficially similar with the deathmatch stylistic elements. The theme of Squid Game was a discussion on the horrors of capitalism and class warfare. It was a distinctly anti-capitalist story.
The "winner" loses his humanity as he fights to win the pot of gold at the end. The makers (1%) wear masks because that represents their own inhumanity in a capitalist world where they make the 99% fight and scrabble and die for their pleasure.
The ending is symbolic too. I'm not going to post spoilers but there is symbolism used to denote where the story will go next.
Alice in Borderland is not about that theme. It's a rather simplistic survival story that is dressed up in Alice in Wonderland fairytale tropes. The thing that makes it good is that the writing creates compelling characters who the reader/viewer can see evolve and grow in a narrative form. Think of the caterpillar who transforms into the butterfly. Which character was constantly smoking and "transformed"? It's a well-done adaptation of Lewis Carroll's story.
Good stories are not about plot points. Both of these dramas bring something to the table. It's not Squid Game vs. Alice in Borderland. It's Squid Game AND Alice in Borderland and hopefully many more interesting stories to come.
Also, predictability is not a sign of weakness. We all know that Romeo and Juliet are going to die. Shakespeare tells us in the title of the play "The TRAGEDY of Romeo and Juliet". There's a reason his story is compelling to us and it's beyond boy meets girl, they fall in love, tragic plot points, death. People earn PhDs and advance human knowledge by critically engaging with the material.
*Side rant. I really hate this obsession with plot. Good stories that withstand the test of time are more than plot. They speak to the human condition and that's why I enjoy reading dead people's writing or watch it be performed. So what if a clock dings in Julius Caesar. It's not a plot hole that breaks the story. The story isn't about the clock. It's about betrayal and murder and political intrigue and our humanity. Let's not dumb down our stories because we want cutesy plot stories rather than interesting works of art that make us think about something more than "plot hole" bs. We should all get a "I never knew myself" moment sometimes when we encounter good stories. They should haunt us and change how we look at the world. Squid Game absolutely haunted me. Alice did as well. That makes me very very happy.
I'm really glad that Netflix put these shows on their platform and the fact that they were well-received means that I can hope for more interesting stories and more viewpoints from other countries and cultures. Squid Game's popular support means that we can get more fun shows. Isn't that a good thing?

it was sooo good especially the last episode was the best in the most craziest way possible like how do people even write such storylines, it's beyond imagination, it was such a good watch, worth every while, it was ten times better than last season the last episode goshh i can't stop by telling how good that came out it was probably the most nervewracking most satisfying last episode, and how can we forgot the star of the show kento yamazaki, like dayumnnn, it's easily one of the best things I've watched this year like wooahhh-
and also the end credits scene gosh the joker card being showed in the end smh, i think players have not made it out like they think they have but have instead entered into phase three of the games, made more dangerous by the fact that they are unaware and have no memory
the joker is meant to represent the wild card and so suggests even more unpredictability, if you can imagine that

I'm glad we get a Kuina/Ann Tag Team. I actually like these two together. And that laser-dodgeball game they are participating in looks crazy as hell. It'll be interesting to see Ann in a game that isn't her speciality (diamonds), not saying that I ever doubted she that got some moves. It's nice to see though.
She was hardly in the Manga after the beach so I am excited to see her here! That dodgeball one looks interesting

I will be forever grateful that Netflix made an adaptation of this manga. Kudos to all of the people behind this flawless series, especially, to Mr. Haro Aso (Manga Writer/Artist of AIB) and to Mr. Shinsuke Sato (Director) I really enjoyed my christmas break because of this. ❤️❤️❤️
One thing that really keeps the series on fire is chemistry and relationship between arisu and usagi and the white guys mystery background and the game origin ,writing is so good than we see arisu in manga

@@mimeriem3976 ig basically the place boderland stays between life and death and people who chose not to stay are sent back but there were some people who chose to stay so probably they are living there and still playing games and ig if they're not killed in game then they will not be killed in real life also (that's my opinion, this is no confirmed by anyone of story makers)
Borderland is the Japanese way of saying "purgatory". The survivors were in comas and near death when they answered at the end, that was pretty much their souls deciding where they were gonna cross over: the land of the living or dead.

I couldn't wait for season 2 so I read the whole manga, it will be interesting to see the difference between the manga and the live action adaptation. For season 1, I think they did really well, tbh I even prefer it more than the manga as the way they change it make the story flow better and Arisu's character to be much more fuller and relatable. In the manga, Arisu had the "main character's luck" kind of character, where he wins by having great friend, personality and luck. But in the TV show, his ability and personality is much more developed and shown to us.
He doesn't have just luck, he's almost the second smartest , next to the white long hair guy. He's just better at the psychological aspect even in manga.
Though I agree they made the adaptation on par or even better than the manga

I want to thank anyone who work hard to make this series happened , What makes this my favorite because the characters have different stories. Them feelings it feels like our feelings . I will not forget the first one and second one it was just incredible , l have a lot of tears in my eyes right now nobody can stand how much this series means to me .

I cannot WAIT for this. I binged watched this with my mom and dad back via Skype back in 2020. Now that my mom is going through chemo therapy this year I'm excited that we can watch season 2 while shes recovering

So I got covid just after finishing work for the year and finally embarking on my holiday but I can say this show has been the best thing to ever watch in isolation.
The fact that the season 2 that I been waiting on came out a couple weeks before was even a great surprise.
Every game, scene, cinematic, action and acting was mind blowing.
My favourite was the King of the spade game. So much action but turned out a bit sad when all the actors got badly wounded.
Anyway, loved this show and can't wait for more.

I'm sooo excited!!! I binged the manga in a week and I can highly recommend it because it has quite some differences to the adaptation but both are amazing. I love how we kind of get two stories in the same universe. Also you can't IMAGINE how crazy this season is gonna be!!! I really wonder how it'll turn out cuz in s1 that skipped some games (cuz in the manga we often have a chapter devoted to completely different characters who play a game) but in s2 they seem to have added at least 2 new ones. I also wonder why they city suddenly looks old. It's true to the manga but they modernized a lot in s1 which I think was a great choice but like why is the City like that now?
SPOILERS FOR MANGA:
I think the degrading of the city is to replace the massive storm that happens during K♠️. It would be quite irritating to watch multiple episodes with heavy heavy rain throughout the entire episode. Less secure structures means less reliable and safe places to hide in buildings from K♠️, forcing more people into more accessible places.
Well, I've read the manga and already know what will happen here and what the ending will be but even after that, I want to watch this not only once but multiple times. I have watched the 1st season at least 5 times and still cannot get enough of it and I know the 2nd season will also be the same. Can't wait for 22 Dec.
