I actually sold my entire Canon R5 kit for the GFX 100 ii (R5 with battery grip, RF 15-35 2.8, EF 50 1.2, EF 70-200 2.8 iii, RF 100-500, EL-1 flash and a few other accessories). Got the GF 45-100, 100-200, Fringer adapter, Sigma 105 1.4, EF 40mm 2.8, and Sigma 150-600.
I don't think I'll ever personally regret it. The shooting experience is now much more methodical and the results are mind blowing, giving me personally a joyful and reinvigorating experience. I will note, however, that I'm not a professional, I do photography and videography only for the fun of it. I reckon as a professional, one would probably prefer Canon over Fuji 9 times out of 10 for ease of use and still great results, as the camera is looked at more as a tool to do the job than a challenging experience to enjoy.

Hi Zach, always enjoy your content. I purchased a GFX50Sii last year with the 80 1.7 and absolutely love it (auto focus will be even slower than the 100Sii). It works well alongside my Sony gear which I still use for moments on the move or when I need to be quick. For static posed portraits I almost exclusively use the 50Sii now - the files are a joy to edit and so much easier. They also work well with TAP profiles which I remember you using here before. Out of interest, are you still using TAP and what profile did you use for the photos in the video? Lovely work as always and enjoy the camera!

im still here with an r6 as my main camera, with an r6m2 for video. I keep looking at the 50sii just for portraiture. I miss my old Fujis.
forgot to subscribe back in your r6 days, so I was quite surprised when I stumbled across this one. subbed now anyway. Great gear reviews and perspective.

This is probably the best and practical input for this camera. I would love to add it to my set up for portrait work. Right now I use the r5 with rf 50mm 1.2 (thanks to you) lol. Beautiful set up. But curious to see side to side comparisons and see how it fits in my workflow.

I have the Canon R5 and rented the GFX II for a week. I can tell you, that excitement of shooting on the GFX will quickly dissipate lol. I was super excited when I first started using the GFX, felt soooo nice in the hands, eye autofocus is actually pretty good, I was so set to buy it.... But after shooting a few days and actually looking at the images and comparing to the Canon, I actually liked my Canon images more. The images from the GFX are still good, no doubt, but they're too clean, too "advanced sensor" look if that makes sense, like if I was shooting with Nikon. Canon on the other hand has this filmic characteristic that I just love, and my color grading works perfect with it, plus, the RF glass is so good, that the images come close to looking like a medium format. I won't cheat on you again Canon, sorry. Anyway, that's just my opinion. Thank god I came to that conclusion because I would've wasted almost 8 grand on the fuji. I was in love with camera itself, holding it, easy menu, ridiculous sharp evf, autofocus was good. But, the pictures didn't WOW me. and to your questions, NO, the clients won't know the difference. I'd rather spend that money on the R5 II and the new RF 35mm, both are coming out 2024!!! (hopefully)

I have it and many of the GF lenses. I have the 50S which I love.
I am an architect and used a film medium format camera along with the Pentax 67 and 645. Besides architecture I do a lot of portraits and group shots. (no weddings).
As somebody who has been photographing since the 1950s with medium format cameras the current generation fixation on auto focus is a bit surprising. Still I get that it’s nice to nail every shot no matter the no matter the subject.
Demanding clients have ALWAYS wanted medium format (or 4x5). The fashion industry relied on the 6x6 Hasselblad. So yes, clients can tell.
It’s true that some FF systems with high end portrait lens have comparable subject separation but physics of sensor size to lens size means that medium format will always look subtly or not so subtly different.
Personally the GFX and lenses is the first camera that has felt as good as the Pentax 67 to me.
For architecture the GFX 100 II is really unbeatable. I tried the Cambo Actus and it is excellent but GFX is more useful. Much quicker and more flexible.
And having shift lenses that go very wide and very long just this a camera a must have
    Nice video !!

When/if you do this comparison, please do a segment on the practical differences of the sensor and how the larger sensor does in lower light and other practical differences. (I have heard it is better for low light and gives bokeh at much higher f-stop's) @@TheZachMendez

Great video! I saw many people use this for weddings, and you for sure know a lot more about photographing them than me, but I think this camera is not really meant for these types of work... I shoot architecture and real estate, also some factories and industrial stuff. This is one area where this camera really shines. I have a sony a7rv and currently cant justify the extra cost, but i'd love to get one.

I more do HS Sr/Family portraits, only shot 2 weddings. I have a X-H2 and a R6. How I use them, I use the R6 when I need speedy AF and the XH2 when I have a still subject. If I was in the wedding business, i could see using a 24ish MP “speed” camera for the faster pace ceremony/reception and use a higher MP for the getting ready/formal wedding portraits. I have only been able to briefly test the GX100ii and review the files at home, the detail is just insanely good!

One more thing worth mentioning is there are other options within the gfx lineup that sit at a nice in between price-wise. I use R6s as my workhorse cameras but was able to pick up a 50R with a gf lens for less than 2k. Don't think I would have been willing to spend too much more than that, but something like a 50sii, 50r, or even 100s is still a great option, but much less of an investment. love my 50R, even though it has it's quirks. the acros film simulation is incredible.

  • @jliang70
    @jliang70 Před 6 měsíci +3

For me the GFX system has superior image quality to any of the full frame cameras. The advantage of the full frame system is with its auto focus system and focus tracking, I use Sony A7RIV, I am not ruling out moving to RV or Nikon Z8/Z9, while the image quality of a A7RIV or RIV is great but it is not at GFX100, GFX100S or GFX 100ii level. Depend on what you are shooting if you are shooting an event, sports, fast moving kids, wild life full frame cameras are still best tools for the jobs. I can easily understand why pros that use GFX system also use a full frame camera like a Sony A1, A7Rs, Nikon Z8/9 or Canon R5. There is no way I will get rid of a full frame rig and just going along with a MF camera system giving the pros and cons of both.

Zach thanks for this video. I really appreciate it personally. I have been tossing and turning about adding this camera to my system. Just like you I'm very invested into Canon with the R5 R3 and lots of RF glass. Yes I'm happy with this system. But I really want something new. MF I feel will become more popular in the next few years. The prices are coming down and any top end FF are also pricey. The gap price wise is shrinking. We can now take 100+ image per second. What's next? I feel the next level of photography is Dynamic Range and even better IQ. That's where MF will come in. There is extra magic in that system. I also like that you have 20 film simulations in the camera and the new added Reala.. I was a Hasselblad film photographer growing up and loved the idea on using different films with either Kodak and Fuji. I had 4 film backs loaded up to photograph what ever was needed. I keep hearing photographers that are using Fujifilm cameras there is less editing to the final images. Better color science so less for us to edit and mess up hahah I also feel the future cameras will have presets and profiles that you can load into your cameras. And like the film days chose which simulation you want before taking your images. Just my thoughts and thanks again for sharing. Keep us posted, would love to hear more how your photography and experiences are with your new camera :)

As you say, most customers are not going to appreciate the quality of the image and 95% of people will see the photo on their mobile phone. Only high end customers could value quality. I have been in photography for 25 years and as a professional I will always prefer quality over speed. Most new photographers need a camera that shoots at 75fps to be able to choose a single image that works, thus losing the experience and joy of being able to capture an image that they can say I did it, not my camera. I have shot with film, with almost all of Canon's first digital cameras such as the 1D (4mp) and the list is long. I currently have R5 and 5Ds. Being able to take an image and being able to get so much detail is worth the cost of the equipment, the hard drives, and the process of creating an image. What young people currently think is a difficulty, they miss out on the entire creative process, being ready and paying attention to everything around them. I would definitely like the opportunity to own a GFX II. Great video by the way.

Man I'd love to try out this camera and your images with it are among your best. But damn it is expensive. I feel like often times we try to rationally justify why we purchase new stuff, yet in reality, it's only our lust for new stuff and wanting to buy something. Nothing deeper. It's just the tricks we play with our own mind to convince us of the necessity of buying the next thing. But I think it's fine to just buy something because you want it.

Not every image with a GFX camera is better than anything else. But it’s those images that are and you think to yourself “could I have gotten that with anything else”. When the answer is no, then you just know.
I’ve been back and forth many times. I’ve had the R5. I’ve had the A7RV. The Z8/9. I just recently sold the Sony for the R3 and a used R7 cause I missed the system. Maybe it’s those yellow accents Canon does. I did prefer the Nikon/Canon image over the Sony.
Then they release the 100II. Sadly the Nikons had to go. It’s those one of a kind images with the 50R, the 100/S with the 110, 80 and 250 that made me do it. It’s those certain images that have something different and once you see it….

Actually, I think a truly discerning client would definitely notice the difference. Of course, in this era of increasing mediocrity with folks glued to their phone screens and social media viewing, it isn't necessary. But, for a professional it opens up incredible possibilities for new income streams. Well worth the investment and good to have available for the particular client/assignment/need. LASTLY, the average person may very well spend $3000/yr on booze, cigarettes, weed, eating out. So, over 3 years what's the problem with $10k on a camera for a hobbyist that can provide endless hours of healthy pleasure? It's just a matter of priorities.
