Knowing how to get motivated is really important.
How to stay motivated is even more important.
There are tons of videos teaching tips and tricks and rah rah motivation, but in this video I’m going to teach you how your brain works so you understand the principle behind how to get motivated and how to stay motivated. You’re going to learn how dopamine, the neurotransmitter of reward and motivation, works in your brain, and four simple things you can do to get motivated and stay that way.

I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.
In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.

If you feel overwhelmed by a to do list, reverse it! Some days my to do list is daunting and I just ditch it completely, start a small task and write it down when I’m done. Even small things like taking my vitamins. Instead of crossing off something, you can see what you have accomplished! Mrs Hinch calls it the Tadaa list :)

That's brilliant, and I'm glad you shared it on this very worthy channel! The name "Tadaa" makes all the difference. I had thought of doing such a list before, but having this name for it envisions a trumpet blast and a hand flourish, in a magician's hat, white gloves and tuxedo. I'm not a big fan of magic, but I'm a big fan of this idea! Thanks again!

Summary of the video in six points - how to stay motivated:
    1. Action doesn't follow motivation; motivation follows action. Want to do that one thing? Don't wait for motivation. Just go do it!
    2. Take a moment to write down your values. Remind yourself what the purpose of your life may be. That can drive you to do things.
    3. Track your accomplishments. Create a way to keep track of what you've achieved so you always remember that you're accomplishing tasks.
    4. Reward yourself before a task. E.g., thinking how good you'll feel once a task is over is one way of rewarding yourself before a task.
    5. Don't reward yourself for bad behaviour. If you're procrastinating and start doing something fun instead of doing what you're supposed to, you're rewarding yourself for bad behaviour. Use boredom as a motivator if you must.
    6. Stop beating yourself up. It's bad for you in the short and long term.
Bonus: when you've achieved a task, regardless of how small it may be, celebrate it. Give yourself credit. Release the dopamine to let your mind know "this was good! Let's do more."

My mother's advice when I was 10 years old in 1963: "if you have to do something, learn to enjoy it." Learning to find joy in everything you do motivates you to move on to the next task. I love calisthenics, exercising 3 hours a day, sometimes only an hour, and when I start sometimes I'm too exhausted to continue. But after a few short exercises, dopamine kicks in and motivates me to do even more. Dopamine also kicks in when I see people who smoke, drink in excess, exhibit road rage, and give myself a pat on the back for not having any self-destructive vices (intrinsic Rewards).

I was actually raised in a fearful manner where I was exposed to lots of parental threats and emotional abuse to where I basically didn't say anything and hid a lot of my problems and stress. It's like I'm reconstructing that for myself now. Thanks for this, it really helped me take a step in understanding myself today. Now to apply my new understanding: the fun part. 🙂

My business coach does a "Brain Dump" every day first thing when she gets to her office. Dumps everything out on the paper. Absolutely everything, even if it has nothing to do with work. Then she gets a coffee, takes a few minutes, then goes through that list and picks out only the things that are most important as the days' "to do list'. After she gets even some of it done she takes another break, rewards herself somehow, and begins again. She said she feels great all day and rarely feels overwhelmed. Especially if she gets the things she doesn't like doing done first. Then the rest of the day is a bonus. I like it.

I think they withhold us knowledge in order to keeo us coming and giving out a lot of money for years. Making supper, esp. a bigger supper used to be a daunting task that I would put off until I was starved, or just pick instead and not eat a decent meal. I had a friend who did a genius thing that helped so much. She would slowly get her utensils and ingredients out. Then she'd start cutting or prepping things. When the cooking part came, it was a lot less to do than starting it all from scratch. I've done it every since.

What motivated me was my 6th grade teacher who I overheard telling my parents I won't do much past the 6th grade. I didn't get sad. I got mad. Now I am a very senior citizen who was a dynamic individual12 years ago. In spite of graduate degrees, knowledge of 5 languages, studying art and music, living in Europe, teaching graduates, young adults and children along with many more reinventions of myself, I am finding difficulty revisiting those accomplishments that made me happy. I’ve been using the tips on here for a few weeks now and I feel the most productive I’ve ever been. Just that has raised my self esteem and given me hope that I can accomplish some of my more challenging goals. The tip that helped the most is just making my bed to get the ball rolling and build up to more complex tasks. Thank you ❤

I love this! The dopamine reward makes so much sense in terms of motivating us. I follow Law of Attraction coaches who recommend changing how you feel as much as possible, and now it makes sense that if there is not a true feeling of accomplishment or reward, you end up feeling even more anxious about manifesting. That's why "rah rah" forms of motivation are not as effective because you need to actually bask in how good something feels and not just distract yourself. I really appreciate how you brought out that you can't feel motivated all the time, but you can develop habits that can motivate you more easily and more frequently. Thanks so much!

This is just beyond amazing! Thank you for putting it out. I have been using the same principle from the last two years and I have cultivated so much self-trust and self-discipline within me that not following through on my word is no longer an option. It's all about CONSISTENTLY PRACTICING. After a while, our subconscious gets reprogrammed to the point that our disciplined, intentional habits become the new autopilot. Thank you for making this wonderful video! ❤️

This video is Godsend. Also, I mean...I have been in a rut. For 4 months. It's been so hard. But now that you have explained the dopamine cycle, I can see what is all wrong in there. Thank you. Thank you so much.
    Important takeaways-
    Action -> Reaction -> motivation
Reward yourself even small things. Praise yourself. Most depressed people, don't behave well to praises (toxic masculinity and the pressure to stick to it), or keep saying that 'I am a loser'. Instead, praise yourself even if you wrote just a paragraph. Because it's better than a blank page.
Thank you. God bless you. 🙏

This may apply perfectly to people with relatively stable feelings of self worth and confidence, however, anyone who has been abused and traumatized around achievement may understand that taking a productive action unlikely results in a reward/dopamine reaction, but instead triggers feelings of deep shame or sadness; maybe anger towards one's abusers, but that's on the good days. I can't remember the last time any of my actions resulted in a feeling of reward - most of the time I have to draw from sheer willpower and get through an extremely ugly process of inhibition, feelings of worthlessness and grief - and I know it's that way for many others, too.
I don't mean to devalue the content of these videos, I know they're incredibly helpful to many people and I have learned a lot from them as well. Sometimes I just think that they oversimplify reality; or maybe rely too closely on the theoretical formula, disregarding that there are obstacles created - especially through early or chronic abuse or other forms of trauma - that can't always be bypassed or even worked through easily. It makes me feel lonely, frustrated and defective at times, watching these videos, trying to apply what they teach me and then realizing that it just doesn't work the same way for me.

I feel like depression for me was because I did too much for other people and not enough for myself. The reasons for it also is believing people you live with aren't part of your problems.
In my case people was my problem. They refuse to acknowledge your pain and you put it down deep in your body.
Taking advantage of the one that gives too much of herself away.
I took back my personal power with Boundaries and believing no one was coming to rescue me, I had to stand alone and learn to love myself before I released myself from depression.
I choose to not get depressed again because of people dedicated to keeping me down. I love your videos. Thank you.

My ADD has led me to begin countless "new and exciting" projects. I know that's not just an ADD thing, but for me, sustained focus has always been a challenge. Then, I look around at all these half finished projects and feel overwhelmed and depressed. I now know I've relied on the dopamine rush I get from the positive feelings and excitement by beginning something new. Your advice and demeanor in this video is a very welcome and sensible elaboration of the Action/Reward/Motivation cycle. So now...my task is to CHOOSE to override the FEELINGS of no motivation by taking ACTION FIRST. Thank you!

"The more you do, the more you are motivated." It's sooo true. While I was single, I studied, worked in the same time, finished law school, had two bussinesses, I was taking singing lessons, learned two foreign languages and I was all the time "on the go". Then I married and my husband prefered me to be a housewife because we moved to another country and we decided that for the moment I will stay home. In time, I lost my motivation, even if I had a lot of free time, I felt it was never enough and I didn't do almost anything. And I was asking myself..how I could do sooo much just 2 years ago and now I just feel so overwhelmed and unmotivated..and here is my answer. Because in time, doing things like cooking and cleaning (which I consider insignificant) made me loose my motivation. Now we have a bussiness together and I do have my part in it, but not as much as I would like. I just understood what happened with my motivation. Thank you!

Summarizing it like that can be a little problematic too though. As someone who has struggled with motivation, that type of optimism and decisiveness always put me off. Like I didn't even want to think about the concept of motivation, or the relationship between reward and motivation. For people who don't want to think about it, thinking about having a vision, or formulating a plan can be overwhelming. That level of optimism to a pessimist is scary 😅

This describes me so much! When you talked about meditation well I was on Aderall for ADHD and Xanax for anxiety all for about 14 years prescribed by doctors! I also struggle with alcohol abuse. Went to treatment almost two years ago and cut off cold turkey from my prescription meds and didn’t drink for two months. I relapsed on drinking but can’t even be on those meds anymore. I have lost interest in doing the things I love so much it drives me crazy! I swear the Adderall being taken away is part of it! My struggle with alcohol and anxiety is the other part! I wouldn’t be able to write a comment like this if I drank to the point of not being capable. Just wanted to share this for someone else who might be in my situation.
