How Menopause Impacts Anxiety, Depression and Panic Attacks -
Learn more about Menopause, and Dr. Haver's book and other treatments at thepauselife.com/
Menopause can really impact mental health, but there are effective treatments, you don’t just have to grit your way through it, so let’s talk about it, and I’m excited to have menopause expert Dr. Mary-Claire Haver here to share the medical aspect of it.
Menopause is not just hot flashes, it’s not just the end of your period. It is a process that leads to changes throughout your entire body. Perimenopause begins 7-10 years before your period stops so you can start to see changes in your entire body, your sleep and your mental health as early as your mid-30’s. We start having a decline in estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen has been shown to have a modulating effect on mood-regulating neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine. And that’s going to make us more vulnerable to stress.
So it’s common to see, especially in perimenopause, symptoms like:
Depression
Anxiety- a lot of women experience more worry, restlessness, and physical symptoms like heart palpitations. Which can also lead to more symptoms of
Panic Disorder and
Irritability: Hormonal changes can make women more prone to mood swings and frustration, affecting their interactions with others.
It’s also very common for women to experience difficulty sleeping, insomnia, night sweats or early morning wakening- which can contribute to more irritability and
that takes us to …Brain fog. Some women experience memory lapses and difficulty concentrating during menopause, which can be really frustrating.
And this is all in addition to the common things people think about when it comes to menopause, hot flashes, night sweats, and metabolism changes which can make your body change quickly, in energy levels or weight gain.
And all of this, from lack of sleep to physical symptoms can impact your self-esteem and relationships, and clearly your mental health.

In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love www.churchofjesuschrist.org/comeuntochrist/believe

My wife died in 2011 and to this day I've refused to grieve. I see absolutely no benefit to thinking about or processing what happened. Instead I've learnt to regulate, surpress and/or repress my emotions...not ideal I know but it works for me. My son says since his mum died he's never seen me angry, cry, show excitement, raise my voice which I know worries him. I did try bereavement counselling but as I refused to open up, be vulnerable or discuss my emotions and feelings with the therapy that went no where.

Thank you so much Emma! So helpful. I was diagnosed with panic anxiety disorder in 2021. Along with other mental health issues. On medication, and doing all of the things mentioned. I’ve always had anxiety and mild depression.. but in 2020, the anxiety got out of control.. I am 60, and I’m sure menopause is a big factor in it. I will pray about HRT. However, I’ve been doing well with medication and all my supplements and being very proactive in my mental health.

    * unrelated rambling* I only recently became aware of people with OCD that become so hyper aware of their body and its occupancy in space and what it feels like and what it's doing that it can actually get them to a point where they begin to panic. I don't think I have OCD, I think a lot of diagnoses are much more of a spectrum than I had previously understood, but when you just did that bit about feeling the roof of my mouth and thinking about the bright light and- wow. It reminded me of when I used to forget how to swallow because I was so hyper focused on making sure I could do it right because I was terrified that I might forget and then I would choke, but then I would actually choke. I'm really grateful that you did that. What I'm getting at is that I never understood why those calming techniques involving identifying things you can touch taste smell and feel we're always such living hell for me. So thank you. I hope other people see this and maybe understand that it's okay to have that anxiety relief thing not work because, it can make it a lot worse for some of us. About the pictures; for the first one I saw the spider but in the second one I saw the flower. strange.

Type 2s are softer introverts., romantic , sensitive, creative, deeply intuitive . I can say more about this. 2s may be really good at some things and really not at others. I’m an infj I think that some infjs are 2s maybe some are 4s but that’s more rare. . 4s can “be all or nothing “. I think that every type can be though. Noelle

Most times I think the depression is getting bad again - it's actually burnout wearing depression's hat and the exact opposite is what's needed!! Although I've found one sure way to test it is to go for a little walk - and if I feel better I know it's depression, and if I feel worse I know it's burnout and allow myself to withdraw for a day or two to recharge!!

I am currently 23 and have been experiencing really severe anxiety for as long as i can remember. I no longer blame my parents or hold any anger towards them, but they definitely did not support me or help in the way i believe a parent should help their child manage their anxiety. In fact, they often rejected me, told me i was stupid, and said to stop bothering them (my anxiety usually surfaced at night.) They actually used to threaten me and say "ILL SEND YOU TO THERAPY IF YOU DONT STOP ACTING LIKE SUCH A BRAT". I wish they had. Years later, im still struggling with managing my own anxiety. I experience it every day and it causes so much pain and distress. Anyway, Im on the journey by myself now and am working towards becoming a parenting researcher/advisor. Great conversation to have! I have lived through this. I have also used this strategy but it is not without pitfalls. Be careful with what you try to do. I remember trying to sew a garment for my mother. It was just too complicated. A depressed brain must be less sharp, less able. So choose activities that are simple but healthy. Because failing does not help depression. At least that is my experience.

Thank you so, so much for the work you do. What to do to help with [enter problem here] is oftentimes way less important than why to do it. Nobody, and I mean nobody will do this practice for 3 weeks without knowing exactly WHY to do it. And this is in 99% of cases in therapy. Patient talks, therapist listens but do not educate why things are how they are. Most of that time ends eventually being time wasted. This video shows the way to do it. In twelve minutes you have informed me more than 6 years in therapy.

I rarely have nightmares but when I do, they’re usually something I find silly when I awaken. I just woke up from a dream, I owned a big dog and I took him in a mall. We walked into a bar and a man grabbed my dog, shrank him down to the size of a pill, put him in a pill cutter and sliced him in two killing him. I was furious and I grabbed the man’s head and slammed it on the bar over and over until his skull opened. The thing is, I was going into that bar to randomly kill someone, anyone. No reason. I’ve never had a dream like that and now I can’t get back to sleep. I’ve been under a tremendous amount of stress lately. My wife was diagnosed with a rare, ultimately fatal autoimmune disease last year and we found out today they’re cutting off her Medicaid. Could something like that trigger a night terror? - Totally freaked out right now.

My initial anxiety level was 2 or 3, then after the video it went up to 8? maybe. So yeah, it's true, I'm overthinking things a lot. I tend to see the negative side of things, and it deterred me from taking actions to build the life that I want. I even started to think that it's not good to want the things that I want. And it's not just about thoughts. The feeling that's always present in the background of your mind, or the world, it's somehow made me stifled, fearful. And now I have an inkling of what is actually going on.
