    Just bought a used jon boat. It came w/ a 1970 Johnson 20hp outboard. I was wondering how to rewire a electric start (it had 1 rigged already but rust/wear).

      if the electric choke is broken.. you can install a manual one on it..or the old fashioned way just to get you running is to put your hand over the carb opening or a rage. just hole tight lol that carb will suck a towel right in!

    Hey man I have the exact motor pretty much except mine is a 35 hp but I was wondering how I could put a charging system on that motor

      great question. I dont know for sure but if you add a rectifier from the newer motors, you may be able to custom wire up a charging system. I think its possible but ive never seen it on these older motors

    It looks great thank you for sharing my engine does not have a pull start the shifter or the controller the guy took it off the boat and he didn't give me the key and he took off the cables as well so I'm looking to see how to fix it and I think I just found it in your video thank you so much

    I need to know how to wire a kill switch to turn the motor off. Already installed the push button but I have a 1981 mercury 50hp outboard and it doesn’t have a kill switch

    So I guess if I just wanted to start my motor the dirty way is ground the battery and connect the battery positive cable to the starter motor. Have an old 1978 Evinrude 115 and just want to do a compression check on motor first.

      yeah! you can connect a starter button. they sell them on amazon! uses alligator clips! one to starter one to coil!!

    Hello sir, I have a 2019 electric start outboard motor, and all the sudden the push start doesnt work, it's quiet like battery is not connected, i have full charged battery connected though, any advice please?

      2019?? its gotta be something silly like bad ground or the button got water in it!! check your wires for cracks!

    Bill…I see you have the battery wires coming up thru the hole in bottom of pan.Going to put starter on soon as I get parts.Did motors initially use that hole in bottom.Seen a lot where they go thru a hole in face of motor.Hate to drill a hole if I don’t have to.

      So the battery wire are going through where the original wire make hookup went on these controlled older big horsepowers!! Originally there was a male connector and the controls had the female. If you can find a way not to drill then all power to ya! For me the little hole with a button plugged in looks good but you gotta do what you like!! Keep me updated!

      Ok. I have to drill hole for a switch but wanted to try not to for the battery cables. I saw a video where a guy added extricate start and he used a battery box and a small lawn battery and put the start switch and solenoid in the battery box .Nifty idea.

    Another quick question as I am getting ready to wire mine this weekend. So the push button gets one wire connected to the solenoid (one of the big posts) along with the battery. And the second button wire gets connected to one of the smaller posts? So you're essentially creating a short to activate the solenoid?

      the solenoid is the open circuit and the button closes it! so you are correct!

      Sorry like the previous wire harness cause the one that came with the boat and it have controls on it but they cut the wires of and the control cables off so now I just have a motor that I need to make run or at least see if it runs

    really well done. excellent idea doing a short and long version. how do you avoid starting with the engine being in gear? factory starters have a button assembled through the forward - reverse selector lever so that you cannot start when the engineer is in gear....

      Thats a great question!. I dont believe there is a factory way... you could maybe rig a ground wire where the gear shift touches it and the starter button maybe? I dont know but Im sure its possible!

      @@BlackoutBilll21 The factory button is built into the gear shift such that the starter button travels through a short tubular channel at the base of the gear shift to then depress the actual started push button. The first button won't travel through the channel if the gear shifter is not in the neutral position. My starter button is going bad and the replacement is hundreds of dollars.

    Great explanation of how the starter button works and how to wire it. I am having trouble with my key ignition and am thinking about bypassing it wit a push button. How would I kill the engine once it is running?

      @@BlackoutBilll21 I have a kill switch. It’s a 60 hp Mercury 4 stroke engine. When I turn the key to the on position, the voltage from the battery takes a while to climb up to 12 volts. I took the console apart looking for a corroded connection. I found some and cleaned the connectors. That helped but I still notice the gauge doesn’t show the same as my volt meter. I think Tracker wired it half ass

      thanks!! sorry for the late reply. You can do this to ANY motor with a starter and/or/ toothed flywheel setup. not sure if the 8hp had that. can you send me a picture?

      @@BlackoutBilll21 I been tearing it down. It's a 94 the flywheel doesn't have the teeth and theres no I can't think of what it's called but there's no part that looks like a starter but has rope around it. So don't think I can do it.

      @@jshall1000 I’d look at your needle setting/ compression. Those motors can be started by hand spinning the fly wheel if tuned properly
