- My wife and I converted this 1972 25 hp Evinrude outboard to a push button start. For a first time doing this, it worked out very well and was really easy! I hope you enjoyed the video!

Well Bro thanks, I just picked up a 1967 Johnson with electric start, it came with everything but most of the wires were cut off and your video explains it in great detail. Appreciated much, it would be nice if other videos would make it as clear as you have. Also great camera work, unlike other that just get the camera dancing all over the place. Again thanks.
Thank you very much. This is one of my beginner videos! I greatly appreciate your kind comments! I’m glad my video helped you out!
Great easy explanation on stater motor set up. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!! I appreciate you.
I have a 25 hp even rude seahorses that I need to change from pull start to electric start. I am researching the parts for it and I think that you did a good job. My shoulders will thank you for making this vid.
I am glad this video helped you. Thank you very much for your comment and watch time on my video! So glad it helped.
As you said.... Perfect. That's what I was looking for.
Thanks for teaching me exactly what I need to know!
Timothy T Law awesome! I’m glad this video was helpful.
Great video, thanks for taking the time to do it. I've got a 81 40hp johnson on a 18' flat bottom gigging boat and my dad lost the keys to it. I'm going to attempt your same setup but with the kill switch and start button installed in the console. Thanks again
I'm a glad this video has helped a lot of people. I use to buy old outboards and my wife and I would rebuild them. Guess I should've made more videos. Might have to get back into that hobby and make more videos. Let me know if you accomplish your task. Thank you for watching the video.
That is awesome ! I have same motor , without the electric start . I woukd like that setup
this is exactly what i needed!
Good, I am happy this helped you!
Buddy you're awesome. I have the exact same motor and this was the only thing I found that walked through step by step how to hook up the starter. Thanks!
Thanks! Glad the video helped you out!
So far man your video is the best resource to get my old Evinrude converted to electric. Thank you also!
Thanks Sean!
Ken Macdonald b
Awesome job!!! I am also doing this to my 69 25hp. Thanks alot. I got lucky and got the complete starter kit for only $50
Woody's Geek Channel awesome. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Where did you get your parts?
Doing the same electric starter conversion right now on my 1956 Johnson 30hp which was originally manual start only. Great video - only issue was you didn't mention the ground wire coming off the 2nd small terminal on the solenoid needed to complete the start circuit. That red ground wire is visible in the video at 4:09 however.
omcbob good catch. Thanks for being very observant. I appreciate your comment and thank you for watching my video.
Yes it did
Tyvm
You are welcome.
Perfect thank you!
Glad my video helped!! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Health & Safety: You shouldn't have the kill switch mounted on the motor. The whole point is if you go overboard the engine is immediately stopped by the lanyard clipped to your body preventing the boat from speeding away and crashing into you, somebody else or property.
I understand that. I’ve never seen a kill switch with a lanyard on an outboard with hand tiller steering on these old motors. That’s how my friend wanted it. So that’s how I hook it up. I do appreciate your concern for safety! It is very important.
Hi very good helped me alot tyvm.
I appreciate you watching my video. Glad it helped you out!
how did you match up the stater Bendix to the flywheel gear?
Gonna try it on my 1981 35 Johnson this weekend
Cool, let me know if it works!
+Backhoe productions did it work? I have an '80 Johnson 35 HP just got it
GREAT VIDEO!
If I understood the schematic correctly, there are more wires that you didn't mention from the original motor cable assembly diagram. Can you send me a note explaining what I may be missing? My first go around and I want to approach this correctly. Thanks so much.
hey wondering what the other red wire is that's closest to the two black wires coming down from the magneto. your video is absolutely excellent! great job.
Ben Miller I am very sorry but I don't know the answer to that. I see the wire you are talking about in the video. I did not have to touch that wire to do what I did. Had I needed to, I could have answered your question. Again I am sorry I could not answer that. Thank you for the compliment on the video. Greatly appreciated. I want to say that wire ran back around and up under the magneto somewhere. Bad thing is I use to work on these motors all the time. Hope you find that answer.
Where did you get your parts, especially starter, solenoid and did you have to change the fly wheel on the pull starter?
Sorry for the later response. I did not have to change the flywheel at all. I got the push button start switch at auto zone. Everything else was already on the motor. Just had to run wires.
what gauge wires did you use for all your connections? Great video!
T. A. Sorry for the late response. I can’t remember what gauge I used. But I do know that I went to AutoZone and told them what I was going to do. I told them the size of my motor as well. The guy working that day went and gathered the wire from the shelf and said “ This is what you need”. So I bought it. I wish I could give you a more direct answer but I just can’t remember the gauge of the wire.
I am doing this same conversion right now to my '69 25hp Johnson. It was not electric start from the factory but I have a '63 18hp parts motor that is. So, I am taking the bracket and motor from one and adding them to the other. My question is: there is very little room to fit the battery cables under the kill switch, how did you do it? You mention you drilled a hole but I would love to see a photo of that. Once the cables are inside the cowl they are very very close to the terminals of the kill switch. Has this ever been a problem with the cables wearing through the insulation and grounding on the terminals or the metal body of the motor?
Loved your video. You did a great job on the motor and the video.
Thank you for the compliments on the video! Much appreciated. Sorry I cannot provide a photo because this was a project for a friend and he no longer lives near. But I will tell you that to this day he has no problem with the motor. I bought a rubber grommet and placed it in the hole that I drilled out so the battery cables would not rub the metal of the cowl. I hope this info helps you out.
I have an issue with a hose came aloose from under the bottom and hooked above on block. Leaking gas and won't run. Was running fine.
You should be able to find that size hose at autozone. Trace it down, remove it, take it with you. Get the right length. Replace it. Shouldn’t be too hard. I hope you get it fixed.
What ga Wire did you use from switch to solenoid ? Looks like 10.
I believe it was 10 or 12.
i want to add same killswitch, the blue magneto wires go to coil and then back to these blue wires,,,where do you wire them on the switch
During my video there should be a sheet that shows where to wire them.
Would this be possible to add this on an 1976 Evinrude 9.9 hp and a 1980 Johnson 35 hp? Both have pull starts and if I'm understanding correctly, all I need besides the wire would be the starter button, kill switch (can I use the existing "stop" button that both have?) and obviously a battery. Do these pull starts have a starter in them already along with the solenoid? New to outboard ownership, thanks and am unable to look in either engine currently.
both will be used as tillers..forgot to mention
It should be possible to do this on both outboards you mentioned. You should be able to use the existing "stop" button as a kill switch instead of what I did here. I set one up because I removed the ignition and the ignition was the kill switch. This motor already had the starter in it because it was originally key start. Remove your cowl and see if you may possibly have one. Most likely you will have to buy one. I highly suggest visiting www.iboats.com/ and www.marineengine.com/. These websites have forums with very smart people about any subject on outboards. Learned all my mechanic outboard skills from these pages. Also you can get almost any part from either site plus detailed diagrams of your motor on marine engines site. Hope you get what you need!
+rjguess1 thank you!
+rjguess1 man that bracket is expensive. I'd need a bracket, the starter, and the solenoid just right? Then buy a push button starter from autozone and wire it all up then voila
+slowfaller yes and I do remember pricing around on that bracket. It is pricey. Once you have the part numbers try eBay. Lots of used outboard parts there. I hope you find what you need.
I was wondering if there were any interlocks to this conversion to keep the starter from engaging when the motor was in gear. There is a mechanical interlock that won't let you pull the rope starter when in gear. My question is when retrofitted, if the motor is in gear and you tried to start the motor with the electric start wouldn't it damage the starter and or fly wheel or mechanical interlock of the motor? I am referring to a 1987 20 hp evinrude pull start with tiller steering. Hope you can help, thank you.
The motor that I worked on in this video has both options to pull start or push start. I have never started an outboard while in gear. I would imagine that it would put strain on parts of the motor such as the starter and possibly the flywheel. I'm not sure if I am answering your question right but I bet it would damage it because they are not meant to start while in gear.
there is a electrical switch that goes from starter coil to ground,if in gear it will disconnect the ground circuit so starter coil will not ingage
awesome video. thank you. I have a 1971 20 hp johnson that has the bracket already on motor. how do I find a starter that will work? thank for the help
PV pv check out iboats.com or marinengine.com
rjguess1 ok thank you
PV pv I find all my parts on those two websites. iboats being my favorite. I also find many parts on eBay. Hope you find what your looking for.
Thanks for the awesome video I very much appreciate your efforts to teach how to set up the motor for push button start. I am working on the same motor that is already set up for electric start but no longer has the key ignition switch setup. I want to do the push button start setup that you use. Where or what kind of push button start switch are you using. Many thanks peace
It’s been some time ago since I did this. But I do believe I bought that push button start switch at my local Auto Zone store. Real easy to set up also. The little toggle kill switch was bought at the same store. I hope this information helps. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment!
Thanks again peace
Hi again may I ask you one other question.. I’m starting the project but wasn’t quite sure what type of wiring you used to go to the battery (red and black)
Thanks
Mark Pastore I bought that heavy gauge wire from the auto store. I told them what I was doing and that I needed a heavy gauge wire that could handle an outboard motor. I told them the cable was going to run from the battery and to the motor. I don’t remember the gauge of the wire but it was thick. The red one is black underneath the red electrical tape. The auto store only hade black. I bought about 8 feet and cut it in half. The battery was only setting 2 feet from the motor.
rjguess1
Many thanks
hey ken do you live closer than oklahoma? i have the same motor and want push button start and would pay ya
Do you have to change the flywheel?
I did not have to.
I’ve got the original manual to my 75 evinrude 40hp and it has the wiring schematic for electric start if anyone wants a picture let me know
where did u find the start solenoid?
This motor had one already. But you can find them on eBay or iboats.com and marine engine.com
Do these come with a killswitch when they come from factory?
Mine was a stick steer from factory but I’m just gonna take all that garbage off and just use tiller handle. Only problem is the electric start switch is on complete opposite side of boat than where tiller handle is.
I bought that kill switch and installed it myself. It did not come with it. I hope you get yours set up the way you want it! Thanks for watching my video.
rjguess1 you’re welcome! Just new to the boating world. Picked up a 73 Evinrude 25 on a 14 ft Jon boat so I’m just trying to learn a little about it. Just really trying to get rid of the stick steer😂
CZcams is a great place to learn!
I also got 14 foot john boat with 25 hp evinrude that was a stick steer. I also am new to the boat world and i just ripped all that junk off myself lol and installed the tiller aging. Im putting in both starter switch and kill switch today. Its exciting watching it come along.
Mine is a 1973 also.
Great video I have 40 hp 1960 evinrude the electric wire r off the boat en motor I see u said something about the Magneto wire for killing switch. The boat electric box said 3 wire need to be connected from the motor so where u think the 3 one is
Marlon Zelaya I wish I could answer your question. But I’m not familiar with the 1960 40hp.
Where do you find a starter bracket??
The starter bracket was already installed on this motor. But a good place to search for one would be this website. www.marineengine.com/
Or www.iboats.com/
I hope you can find one if you need it.
I’ve also found some hard to find parts on eBay.
Is there any way I can get ahold of you to ask some questions about the motor. I have the exact same one and im having some issues with it but the motor itself is in great condition.
You can email me if you would like. rjguess@hotmail.com. Send your questions may way. I’ll respond the best I can.
where do you buy the starter?
The starter was already on the motor. But if you need one look on iboats.com or eBay.
I have the same engine. Do you have a part number for the starter bracket? I can’t find it for nothing.
Sorry man. I no longer have this motor. I wish I had some information for you but I don’t. 🙁
rjguess1 it’s ok. Thanks though. I been searching the net for WEEKS!!! Finally found the part number 0126256 but MAN it’s expensive! $322. Says it’s new but don’t look new but don’t look it. Still not gonna pay that though! Jeez! I havent found any on eBay either.
young john have you checked out any boat forums? www.iboats.com/ try them and see if you can find anything.
does this wiring schematic charge the battery
Farley Gordon I'm sorry but I don't have a definite answer to that. I would say yes but I did not test that.
Where did you get this kit
I got the push button start switch and toggle switch at autozone. All the wiring I needed I also got there.
Is that omc parts as far as starter motor and solenoid? I have a 1966 28hp speeditwin that I’d like to make electric start, already has the bracket for it. I been looking at different motors on marine engines.com to try to find a starter motor and solenoid, but everything I look up shows pull- rope starters. I know it’s been a long time, but Do you have part numbers for this project?
I’m very sorry to say I do not have the parts numbers for this anymore. I wish I did but I do not.
rjguess1 all good, someone somewhere knows something ;) thanks for the reply!
Greetings I am converting my 25 hp evinrude outboard just like your video. I have everything done but I can get power the motor to start. I checked everything but I needed to ask about the wiring of the selinoid.
There is a black wire on the top small post that appears to go to a relay of some type. Your video didn’t mention that. Would that connection cause me issues. Or should I put a ground on the selinoid to he motor.
Your video is great but I’m a novice at this. I had the starter looked at and serviced, new battery, new wires and switches and a new Selinoid. I’m sure I am missing something small lol.
Many thanksgivings
Mark Pastore could you tell me at what point in the video you see the black wire you are talking about?
My apologies at the 2 minute mark you show the selinoid and there is a red wire off the left small post. On my boat it looks as if it goes to a relay then to the right there is a red wire not on a post but appears attached to the engine as a ground. Many thanks
Mark Pastore I know longer have this motor. It was a friends. I see the wire you are talking about. If everything is hooked up as the motor in my video shows, I am not understanding why you are not getting power to your motor. No need to apologize my friend. Was just wanting to make sure I was looking at the right wire. If I could see your motor that would be better! I haven’t worked on boat motors since this video was made. It’s been a few years. So let me ask this. When you push the button to start your motor does anything happen at all? Any clicking, is your choke electric or manual? Also a great place to go to get a diagram of your motor is here
www.marineengine.com
You can find pretty much any part or more help in the forums if I am not able to help you out.
rjguess1 thanks again my friend I’m not getting any clicks or signs of power getting to the motor. I will trouble shoot tomorrow. Thanks for heads up about the marine group.
Lol I will get it I love learning to work on these motors I m such a novice
Peace
Mark Pastore I really enjoyed working on those older outboards when I use to buy them and fix them for fun. Wish I had the time to pick it up again. I hope you get it going. A good idea would be to make a CZcams video of your motor. You would get a lot views. Probably a lot of help. Sometimes it’s hard to figure the problem out unless one can see it first. I really hope you get it. When you do let me know please. Thanks again.
Was that an 11 tooth starter gear?
Zakary Aguilar I am unsure about that. Sorry I don’t have the answer for you.
What fuel did you run through this?
2cycle engine oil. I forgot the gas mix ratio. It’s been a long time. I think it may have been 40-50:1.
The fuel pump wire need to be connected to the electric wire
thank you. I have been looking but all the people I contact wants to know the part # of the starter that was on there and I don't have it.
PV pv see if this will help you. You should be able to lookup a diagram and find the parts be part numbers. www.marineengine.com/parts/parts.php
rjguess1 thank you. it helps allot. do you think 1971 and 1972 years would be the same? I have a 71 and they only show starter for the 1972 model
PV pv I don't want to say 100% yes to your question. But from some experiences that I've had rebuilding motors is that some parts do stay the same for several years. I'd give it shot if I were you. Make sure to check the return policy if your ordering it from the website I sent you.
rjguess1 ok thank you. the only issue I see is guys say I have a 22 ci motor and the only starters I found are for a 31.8 ci. do you think that would make a difference?
That may make a difference due to the size difference. Bolt holes may be placed differently on the starter seeing that yours is 22 ci and the one you found is 31.8 ci. See if you can get into the forums on the marineengine.com website. There are a lot of awesome people and mechanics there who have answered many tough questions for me. I bet they could help you out a lot on that question. I hope you find what your looking for. Don't stop looking.
hey rj i have that same motor. Is there any way I could send you my motor and I could pay you to set it up? where are you located?
+Richard Burgee I am in Oklahoma and you?
oh alright. yeah I'm kinda bummed I can't find a starter motor for my outboard anywhere online.
Ben Miller Go to www.marineengine.com and try that. I hope you find something. What year is your outboard and what model?
I've looked around. I'll definitely try that site. My motor is a 1971 evinrude 18hp model 18103S. Seems like the starter has been removed along with the starter bracket. I can send you some pictures and maybe that will help more.
I just looked up the info you gave me. You can buy that started bracket n that site. Try here.www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1971&hp=18&model=18103S&manufacturer=Evinrude§ion=Cylinder+%26amp%3B+Crankcase
Okay cool I'll let you know what I come up with. Thank you.
As for the starter itself, Im not sure.
What about the carburetor solenoid?
What do you mean? What about it?
@@rjguess is it not wired to anything now? Mine was converter by the previous owner, but it has no wires leading to it. It’s just there lol
@@circularpizzabox2134 I can't remember. I did this motor for a friend a long time ago. But I am pretty sure every wire was connected somewhere. I did not leave any unneeded wires unhooked. I did not even remove any wires besides the original harness that was damaged and worn out.
@@rjguessTruly appreciate your response. Thank you.
@@circularpizzabox2134 your welcome! I hope it helped some. Thanks fir leaving a comment and watching this video.
You are going to burn out the starter switch by connecting it to the solenoid that way
Hmm that’s how I was told by boat mechanic. It’s still working to this day. No issues.
Good luck
I have a 74 johnson with the simular set up but I can't get it to work. Somebody please help me!
Gene Watson tell me what steps you took and see if maybe I can help.
Lol never mind I got it thanks
I got a 68 johnson and 72 johnson both 25 hp tiller and electric the problem is the top cylinder will get spark and comes the problem is the bottom cylinder wont get spark ! Every heard of crap like that ?
Yes I have. You need to remove your flywheel. There are several things that could cause this. One is if your motor has what they call "points" one of them might be out of adjustment or bad and needs to be replace or adjusted. The other is if it has "ignition coils" the one that is not getting spark is bad. It needs to be replaced. I am pretty sure your motors will have ignition coils. You could try removing your flywheel to get to the ignition coils. See if they might be rubbing the flywheel or are dirty. You could clean them off and place them back in. It might help but most likely you will need to replace the one with no spark.
Check out this video This may be similar to yours. If yours has points and coils you will get the right idea on how to identify them and check/replace them. czcams.com/video/t862mpo-30I/video.html
how about e mailing me the systematic
The starter was already attached to the motor when I was given it to work on. So I cannot give an answer to you at this time.
Is motor peeing????
This is an older motor. The water/pee stream comes out right there instead of o tiny pee stream hole like newer motors.
