After I would say about oh, 7000 videos of guys getting on here and and pointing out one wire, telling where he bought the wire, where he bought the wire end, who invented the solenoid, what types of solenoids they use on the international space station and how he would wire it if he was there , how many wires you COULD fit on a terminal if you wanted to...this is the best explanation of 4 posts on a little solenoid SO FAR....thanks.
Thanks Matthew' I am sorry for the poor video skills I'm working on that and hope to do better. I will be posting a few new video shortly as I just got back from a Florida vacation. thanks for watching!
If your motor is a CDI motor (not points/magneto) then on your wiring plug there will be a black wire with a yellow stripe, splice into that wire with one of the kill switch wires, the other kill switch wire goes to ground. your done. kodi
It is hard to say if it will fit without making the hole a bit larger, or using shim washers to make it smaller, Because OMC used at least 3 sizes of kill buttons that I know of, As far as any exposed terminals use heat shrink & then give that a couple coats of liquid tape. kodi
I have a 1980 45 HP that was rope start and at some point someone added a starter, so now I am attempting to figure out what was done right and wrong...for instance the kill switch does work (wires cut) and there is no rectifier...
Hello Kodi I purchased a 1990 15hp tiller steer that had electric start at one time, before I purchased it, the starter and the fly wheel are on the motor, the wiring is still ran, I traced it out and found the wires run from the wiring block at the rectifier to the starter. And the neutral switch and back out to the front of the motor, will the wiring need to be removed from the wiring block (at the rectifier) and connected to the solenoid for the push button to work correctly?
I find the best place is anywhere in the front cowling out of the way as not to accidently bump it, the tiller side near lower cowling makes for the shortest wire runs, both are good spots, kodi
Thanks for the reply. I was wondering how to wire the kill switch to the motor as well.bI have never wired one on an outboard before. Want to make sure the wiring is right.
Hello I have a problem with my johnson 150 hp 1981 slow star and my negative lead on my battery comes hot with smoke can you help me please thank you very much
sounds like someone just added a starter to it which is very common, that is not the full conversion tho, to get the charge system you need to pull the flywheel and add a lighting/charge coil under the flywheel. your mag plate may or may not be adaptable for this and if not you would need to get a mag plate that is arranged for the charge coil, and then add the rectifier. They sell kits for this but they are spendy. better bet is to find a donor beater motor already set up and scavenge it for the system/parts. kodibass
Morning ! I am about to put an electric starter on my 1977 canadian built 20 hp that has an AC lightning outlet. Am I to understand that by wiring it through a rectifier, (just like my factory electric '74 15hp), I could enjoy battery charging (I guess more like a trickle charge) ? Your advice would be greatly apreciated.
Just purchased an 85 20hp tiller steer similar to that one and it just has the stop button,For safety I would like to add the lynyard type kill switch. What would be the best location and should I leave the old button on?I could just eliminate the old button, but for safety the new ones I see have exposed terminals and could create a hazard if those were not completely sealed from fuel.I am sure you have done these.
Yep"" the one you want is Sea Dog,, Where you place it is up to you,,, I like to put it on the front of the lower cowl pan,,, but your options are many,, I agree that the lanyard kill switch is a good idea, look on ebay for the seadog lanyard kill switch,,,, I sell many of them... kodi

thanks for the video, you explained it very well and make it seem easy

great video, thanks

Sorry, but does that Sea Dog fit thru the hole ok where my original stop switch is?thanks
Where is the best place to wire in a kill switch? I am setting mine up the same way as yours. Just not sure where to run my kill switch wires.

newbie question, is there an easy way to tell the difference between S1 and S2? or does it not really matter?
The small post closest to the main positive battery cable coming in to the solenoid becomes S-1
Thank u the info. How did u mounted the solenoid? There is no screw hole on mine...thanks
+JT there are 2 1 inch bolts and a curved metal strap
retainer that screw up into the main starter bracket to hold on solenoid. kodi
