    I just got my 66 cutlass back a from paint and body shop and also had the engine and trans completely rebuilt. This car had electrical gremlins before but now are everywhere. As it's been many years sense Ive done much electrically on vehicles I had forgotten many things. This video helped me to at least properly wire up a push button starter switch which I'm thankful for as apparently my ignition switch went bad-at least the part that fires off the starter. Now on to brake lights, and turn signals. Thanks!!!!

    *You just became my new best friend* .. "In head of of course" 😂.
    On a more serious note, I've called four traveling mechanics and towed my Saturn Vue into two automotive shops, w/less than 4 star reviews. I'm convinced those reviews came from the actual business & they are spamming themselves 5 start reviews.
    When I say none of these mechanics new Jack-shiiiish! That would be a understatement.
    My truck is practically brand new now thanks to all of the unnecessary brand new parts! I have low mileage, brand new clutch / transmission, replaced the slave and clutch cylinder. The Purge valve was also replaced. I just left a tune up no less than three maybe four months ago, somehow one mechanic read the codes as a misfire 1 & 4 , And he wasn't too sure if it was stating that the coil from one were four needed to be replaced so we replaced both. The last thing I was told by GMC was the ECM & center control module AS WELL needed to be replaced. Let me ensure you that no test were conducted before this sure as diagnosis was suggested.
    Needless to say I came home with my truck on the back of a tow truck thousands of dollars later and I was beyond livid!
    I hopped on CZcams, typed in a couple of things that the truck was doing before it just wouldn't start anymore. One thing led to the starter another lead to the solenoid and eventually how to bench test a starter.. And Walla! Well I'll be damned thousands of dollars later All I needed was a $12 toggle and $8 push start and a good 20 minutes to watch this video! I guess there's no need to say it but I will anyway.. If you want something done right do it your damn self! And now I see why it is so important for men and women to know somewhat the basics of the vehicle they're driving if nothing else. Always run your own test and look these things up for yourself. Not to mention I also ordered a clear view home diagnostic kit, a multimeter, LED tester light and a few alligator clips just keep on deck! Had I done this for myself in the beginning.. The kids would have had a better winter, I would have been less stress in my wife would have had a lot more money to shop with. The whole household would have been better off. With CZcams anyone can be a mechanic! But I also discovered anyone can also pretend to be a mechanic, come to your house diagnose your vehicle with BS, collect the diagnostic fee and never return to actually fix it. It is a real life scam that is going around and I would suggest anyone to do their own research. If you cannot actually fix the problem yourself at least no with the problem is before you pay someone else to fix it to any and everyone who reads this I hope all is well. #BackOnTheRoad ha!

    • @DivineSpeed
      @DivineSpeed  Před rokem +1

      Try a 12 volt relay first on your 6 volt battery. See if that works. If it does not, just hook your push button directly to the starter without a relay. That's the way it would have been wired from the factory. Put a fuse inline if you do.

    Very good info, well done TY.
    I have a question. I have a 97F250 and the ignition went out last winter, I switched out the entire steering column because it had even more issues with a 92 F150 and it wasn't a exact match but it worked pretty good and it was free. This winter OMG this ignition also took a dump, I couldn't shut it off, the key was just spinning around loose and busted. I had to dump the clutch and disconnect the positive battery post, ignition was stuck on and was draining my battery, now I have to open the hood reconnect the battery and short out the solenoid relay to start the truck then dump clutch disconnect Bat grrrrrr
    It wasn't easy for me to find and replace the column last winter, and I just had to take the bed off to replace a fuel pump in the gas tank and replace the starter motor. Also not easy for me I'm alone and disabled. I can put a switch in to start the truck but I still have to disconnect battery can you please give me some advice on a cheap easy resolution?
    TY

    • @DivineSpeed
      @DivineSpeed  Před 4 měsíci

      What a mess. The only real quick easy solution I can think of is to put a battery disconnect in line. Like is used on the back of a racecar. 2 Pcs Battery Shut Off Switch 12V High Current Battery Disconnect Kit 12V Power Shut Off Switch on Off, 12-48V Battery Cut Off Switch for Car Vehicle RV Truck Boat Marine ATV Power 300A a.co/d/1Y1fL7G
      a.co/d/1Y1fL7G
      I tried to add a link above. But anyways, if you could put a longer battery cable on the truck to somewhere that you could reach it, you'd have a way to shut everything off in the cab. This isn't the best solution but it might be the easiest at the moment.

  • @coxdevj
    @coxdevj Před 6 lety

    When using the relay method can you use a lower rated momentary button to activate the relay or does it still need to meet 12v and 30amp ratings? I only ask because I'd like to hide a momentary push button kill switch with relay and a lower rated smaller button would be easier to hide.

    • @DivineSpeed
      @DivineSpeed  Před 6 lety +1

      I would think you would need a 12 volt button but I don't think the size matters since it is just used to activate the relay. However I dont know that for sure so I wouldn't take my word for it. I would just try it before mounting the switch permanently. Chances are it will be fine.

    Find the lead that activates the starter on the solenoid. Remove and replace with min of a (14 gauge) wire to the push button, the other(14 gauge) lead the other terminal on the push button should go to a positive terminal on the battery. Will this safely start the vehicle including the danger of starting in gear if equipped with an automatic trans?

Ur power wire should only come from the push button since ur starter is grounded already that would be all u need to complete the circuit an crank ur starter.

      Every car all the way up to the 1990s had the wire connected straight to the starter. There's nothing wrong with that. Just make sure there's a fuse in there somewhere. The only added benefit of adding a relay is weight loss. You shorten the amount of heavy gauge copper wire needed to connect the starter. Adding the relay under the hood allows you to use a smaller wire from the push button, to the relay. It's just a signal wire without a load on it so you can make it pretty small. The ground on the relay is the other end of that signal wire. Inside the relay is a bi-metal strip that is pulled to make the connection based on the resistance caused by the 12 volt signal wire and the ground of that signal wire. That's what actually makes the relay work. All relays are the same until you get to the Solid State Relays but that's a whole other video. lol. Hope this helps.

    What are the cons of going with your first option straight to the starter? I have my toggle switch going straight to accessory on my fuse box. Is there a better way? I have low voltage and starting issues.

    • @DivineSpeed
      @DivineSpeed  Před 4 lety +1

      Really there's not a lot of difference. The only con would be the lack of a fuse. Just make sure your wiring going to the toggle switch and starter is big enough.

    If car is in sun. And start for 1st time the day sometime start 1st time without keep cranking. Sometimes keep crancking ONLY ones. Then start easy.
    After it starts. I switch of and starts again. I did it 6 times. Off and start off and start. No no no problem.
    I take of ignition switch wire from starter and jump it straight to battery this morning. Same problem. Stuck and keep cranking. Have to take of negitive wire to stop. Then try start again. Start at ones, no problem
    Rrrrealy hope someone no what cause this. Thanks so much.

    • @DivineSpeed
      @DivineSpeed  Před rokem

      That is an interesting problem. You might try cleaning your cable ends on the battery and the starter. After that, I'd probably do a load test on the cable. Use a volt meter and see what the voltage is at the starter when someone else is trying to turn it over. Could be several different issues, including the starter but cleaning and checking your cables first doesn't cost anything so I'd try that first. Let me know what you come up with.
