  • NATO expansion might have provoked the war in Ukraine, but surrounding Russia isn’t the organization’s only pursuit. NATO participated in the US “war on terror” in Afghanistan, NATO destroyed Libya and today NATO is expanding into Africa.
To help break it all down, Rania Khalek was joined by Vijay Prashad, Executive Director of the Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research and author of many books, including “Washington Bullets: A History of the CIA, Coups, and Assassinations."
Vijay’s articles discussed in the episode:
The rise of Nato in Africa mg.co.za/top-six/2022-06-02-o...

Regime change is old fashioned now, the US has moved to regime destruction. They could not destroy the Afghan Taliban government because Afghanistan was one of the poorest countries in the world and there wasn't very much for them to bomb, Taliban was popular among the impoverished majority without electricity or running water, where people sought meaning in life from devout faith, it was not a secular country and the corrupt US puppet governments could not take hold. Ideally societies with evolve their own governments without violent foreign involvement. I think the US rushed into Afghanistan so fast when they did because the Taliban was getting worldwide recognition for virtually stopping opium production and sales, that opium was very valuable to the US in its need for off the books funding for corrupting selected elites all over the worldl, you either kill them or buy them but bank money leaves a trail. Taliban leadership of Afgans farmers out of the opium business, although costing them the lucrative payoffs of supplying the world with opium and heroin, involved appeal to religious morality, nationalistic appeal to an Afghan independence of corrupt foreign domination, and bottom line, if they continued growing opium and processing it for market, they would go to jail. Foreign observers came to see for themselves the news that Taliban over the course of a year had led the country to convert to cultivating wheat and other legal wholesome crops and was no longer cultivating opium and manufacturing heroin. Positive things were said about the Afgans and their leadership. i think this is what spooked the US to rush into a very violent war with all their disinformative "reasons" to do such violence to one of the poorest neediest countries in the world. The main constituency of the US is their own public. As long as their public believes their fake self righteous narratives about their wars, it doesn't matter what other countries think and feel about it, they'll come along sooner or later, in the "unipolar" world. But my point is that countries ideally should create and support their own governnents. The religious fundamentalist morally strict Taliban is correct for a country where the majority of the population has minimal modern technology and education and finds their comfort in family, hard work and worship of their God, and a government that makes sense in that context. Without the massive military intervenntion and destructive violence of the United States, Afghanistan would probably be a stable country today that has made some progress toward technoloigcal advance and more economic independence. US slowed them down as it's done in nrorth Africa and in Iraq, a once beautiful country making progress in development, many people favored their government, there's no way to know accurate numbers, but those who spoke out when the US was bearing down on their governmnt to destroy the beauty and modernity and stability, those who did not want the Ba'athist wanted, they got. They own the Green Zone, the most valuable real estate in Baghdad, where Iraqi leaders had lived before, on the Euphrates, those 4 square miles are US property now. Where Iraqi rulers used to live, now Americans live, that is US territory, not Iraqi territory. The US stole it from the Iraqis and the geostrategic ramifications of US owning the Green Zone are diverse and frigtening. The US is making the world more and more unsafe with every action it takes. Good luck to Africa to not have any more Libyan tragedies. There is deadly flooding in Libya today, predicted 55,000 dead. i can't help thinking if Gaddafi was still there, it woiuld have gone better, without all the years of chaos and carnage the US has brought to them. Today, Syria has gone to the international organization for support in demanding US military withdraw from their country. US have begun to withdraw, seems too good to be true, but so far, the Syrian government has been a survivor and has not fallen as intended, remember the Obama admiistratiom that began the destruction of the Libyans' country, they also recruited and funded the '"Free Syrian Army" with their blood money, they probably had some of the Libyans' gold to pay for this new "regime", and i won't forget how chilling it was when the Obama administrtion marched their little fake "legitimate recognized govdrnment of Syria" into the UN, to present them to take the seat of the Syrian representative, this was the new approach to "regime change" but it didn't work, there was a lot of ambivalance, Obama had campaigned on the violent US take over of Iraqi, and now they would just declare a different faction to be the 'real' government of Syria, on the authority of the US, but it didn't work, and Russia intervened in later 2015 militarily in support of Syria not ending up as another Libya, destroyed, when they still had their real government, the same one the majority of their country had supported for a long time, and regime change type 2 didn't work either. Since then they go for regime destruction and all that invovles. It's good for their private sector interests and for their global military dominance and is harmful far beyond the destroyed country in so msny ways.

War against Yugoslavia was waged completely outside of the NATO charter and sphere of responsibility. The selling point was "Yugoslavia will cause genocide". Yugoslavia fought the KLA terrorists for two years before NATO started bombing. The mass exodus of all peoples of Kosovo started only AFTER the first bombs fell. Shortly after, NATO would say "there, we told you Yugoslavia will do this." This is the American modus operandi in many other conflicts, and we're seeing the beginnings of that where we see the push to manufacture so called genocide of Ughyr peoples in China. Associated press recently found no evidence of this. I feel that the NATO agression in Yugoslavia needs more attention. Western documentaries to watch:

Africa has been in the Western heat for centuries. While the old elites curved into the Western world's mechanics, the young people, who constitute the huge majority are radically opposed to the Western world's mechanics. The Americans and their Western acolytes have a mountain to climb.
South Africa was always captured. Mandela was touted as the hero for the sole reason that he had caved under Western demands. Mandela binned the Freedom Charter and accepted Neoliberalism which shut the door to the ANC making a dent onto Western interests I.e De Beers, Anglo American, whose CEOs Oppenheimers etc had directly arm twisted Mandela and turned the tide. Critically it was, the collapse of the Soviet Union which played a huge part in the latter ditching the ANC.
The current fight in South Africa within the ANC owe to the Mandela sell out. Ramaphosa is an agent of the Western world. The State Capture was against President Zuma for his steadfast stance against the Western interests in South Africa. This is largely because Neoliberalism has impoverished millions yet there is no way out of the mess just as in the Western world itself.
Zimbabwe is being attacked because of the clarity of its position on the future trajectory. Zimbabwe shouldn't succeed because of the Sanctions.
Yet its clear that the current Ukraine conflict with the emergence of Russia and China under BRICS offers an opportunity of dedollarisation. The Western sanctions against Russia have been the catalyst creating an enabling environment not just for Africa but for those in the world who are struggling to free themselves from Western oppressive hegemony. The creation of an alternative world economic system is a godsend for us in Africa to join hands with Russia and China, countries which helped us to gain independence.
The Western world is isolated, and in a perilous way ever since the inception of its hegemony. The world needs and deserves better than the Western world's offer which is a disaster.

The only thing that I have an issue with, is that that start this history and mistreatment with Western Europeans , slavery, and colonialism.
They refuse to cover the atrocities that were happening on the ground that actually made Western Colonialism in Africa a way lesser of 2 evils, believe it or not.
I am definitely not making excuses for atrocities happening today, but people have such short term history, inside of a vacuum, that they make the mistake of throwing the baby out with the bath water.
They also refuse to acknowledge the growing communism was and still is a threat, it’s just more subversive right now.
People also refuse to acknowledge that even, with all of this taking place, it was still more stable than its ever been, and has created more opportunity than the world has ever seen.
If we’re going to tell it? Let’s tell good, the bad, and the ugly.

This gives me so much hope for the people of the Global South. Africa's not "the developing world," but a wealthy continent that's been pillaged through our imperialism. As for that occupied territory of Guam, I was a sailor stationed there back in the '90s. Beautiful island with some great folks. How much better could it have been without the Air Force AND Navy bases everywhere? I now understand why they must have hated us being there. It's sad how the military life can isolate Americans and eventually turn us against everyone who isn't one of us. It's what I"ve come to call "Toxic Americanism," because it enables us to disrespect the locals and trash their land without fear of serious consequences. Now expand that to the US government and you have one messed-up country with the power of nuclear annihilation. No violent sociopath should have access to such weapons. Thanks, as always, to BT News and Comrade Vijay for your wisdom!

7:02: 🌍 NATO's war of aggression in Libya in 2011 set in motion discussions about global NATO and accelerated military expansion in Africa.
14:19: 💣 The destabilization of Libya led to the rise of al-Qaeda in the Maghreb and the spread of weapons throughout Africa.
20:25: 🌍 The military expansion in Africa by the US and Western countries is driven by the desire to control raw materials and maintain influence, but there is a growing resistance and skepticism among African countries.
26:19: 😕 There is growing concern about the United States' influence in Africa, as they attempt to counter Russian and Chinese influence on the continent.
32:12: 🌍 The speaker discusses the lack of understanding and awareness among Americans about why people in the global south may not prioritize conflicts like Ukraine and may be skeptical of Western narratives.

This was a fantastic episode, thank you. The Libyan war was a turning point for me, where I really got informed about the imperialism central wing of the Democrats - that, and Obama's "Surge" in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the horrific proxy war against Syria. It was great to hear this review again of the "fast and furious" style arms flooding of the Sahel and Maghreb, promoting a circle of justification for intervention. The notes about the bills to supress Africans for pursuing self-helping policies in trade really fit the business as usual of endless tyranny of US foreign policy in the developing world. This stuff makes me so sick that I'm finally emigrating from the US this year. We could be so great, so prosperous, so advanced, so positive! But no, most of our insane advantages and unprecedented privileges are funneled into a machine of death, pollution and impoverishment. As the guest notes: these policies are hurting the US - increasingly with real and tangible effects, such as falling share prices in our flagship tech firms due to forced sanctions against China, which forms up to a third of their sales. The trigger happy insanity on war and sanctions is finally hitting home in real and measurable ways. Enough!

I got kicked off Reddit chat groups for saying that NATO was involved with the invasion of Iraq. People genuinely believe that NATO didnt have any role whatsoever in that conflict and I was genuinely shocked to see how insanely ignorant people are to what’s actually happening around the world.

      Double standards 😒
Why can't the west just focus in there domestic affairs and consolidate peace in Africa? Africa is a whole continent by itself so why they cannot let them be?
And the UN? The most double standard institution I've ever known. They cannot even step up without taking sides!
Now I get it why Russia and China are the center of propaganda and blackmailing!!
Because they refused to meddle in other countries affairs in the name of super power yet they're integrating faster in Africa.so they see it as interfering with their interest so they're now combining to bring them down! Sad😥

There is 1 hell of a long history of coups by western governments ever since imperialism started to rear its ugly head, around the time capitalism started tbh. Some countries like Belgium, the UK, and the US were especially brutal, idk about the others much I know that some colonies were horrendous but idk if which countries match up to those 3 in brutality and scale. When the UK put down the baton of imperialism, the US picked it right up and is still pursuing those policies today. The other western countries just agree to steal resources from undeveloped African countries but mostly let them govern themselves.@@JungleDjinn

So "uniting" China, for China's part (92% Han-Chinese) is a question of ending colonialism and international meddling that keeps chinese in a geopolitical crossfire of a soft war.
