Stockton was putting up better numbers than Nash in his best years, but because he faced better MVP contenders, had Karl Malone on his team, he was never in the MVP race. Nash's only competition at MVP those two years was an aging Shaq who was a 2nd fiddle on a Heat squad tbh, and Kobe's best scoring years on a struggling Lakers squad. Stockton had to face greater competition, and had Malone on his team to take away his points. If we put Nash in the 80s or 90s, does he even sniff MVP? Lol let's be real. Nash won 2 MVPs at the perfect time to win them for a guy putting up his numbers.

Stockton… 10th? By far the leading player all-time in assists AND steals. And your age argument just doesn’t make any sense, Shawn Kemp was in the middle of his prime in his late 20s when the Jazz made those finals, and Stockton + Malone were just as old (in fact slightly older) than the Rockets big 3. Stockton was not an elite scorer but he was extremely efficient and one of the best defenders in the NBA at his position.

Stockton may not be Top 5, but putting the alltime leader in assists and steals at No. 10 is still a bit harsh. Also - it's not the Jazz fault that they went to face the GOAT twice in the finals. These Jazz teams could have beaten a lot of other NBA Champions. Sometimes you cannot just look at the numbers or results - you have to see them in context. Stockton is still a better player than Kidd (also defensively), Westbrook (who doesn't even belong in this list - he is too much of an empty stats guy, just look at advanced metrics and those playoff losses you mentioned). Also Cousy has to be Top 10. You just cannot left him off just because he played in the early ages of basketball. He has proven SO MUCH more than guys like Kidd and especially Westbrook and even Paul (also I can understand putting Paul above Cousy). He should at least be like No. 7 or 8.

Westbrook is 3rd leader in turnovers all time. Poor ball handler, moving the bottom 80% in efficiency combined with a high usage rate. Its why his triple doubles are looked at as stat padding. He played the game so badly, that in order to get triple doubles, he had to steal rebounds from his own teammates and had to get 5/17 shots - 8/25 to score double figures consistently. He made the team worse and did not play winning basketball. He was a disease for any team he was on. No one wanted him and is why everyone traded him first chance they got.
He never improved on any fundamental skills because the league coddled him and excused his lack of fundamentals.

I literally do not understand why so many people hate on John Stockton. 5 years ago, it's pretty much consensus that he's a top 5 point guard ever. Now everyone's like "He was never the best player on his team" like Scottie Pippen doesn't exist or "He only has those stats because he played for a very long time" like Kareem didn't get his 38,387 points because he played basically the same amount of time. Seriously though, just because a guy is white and can't jump off the roof doesn't mean he's not as great as the athletically gifted ones. Stockton is *the* model of consistency in the sport and you can argue that he's the greatest ever at the two primary things that a point guard should do: facilitate on offense and serve as the first line of defense. Gary Payton, arguably the greatest defensive guard of all-time, said that it was tougher to guard Stockton than Michael Jordan, because, to paraphrase what he said, "When MJ has the ball in his hands, he can score 30, but when Stockton has the ball in his hands, everyone can score 30".

A common misconception about West that fans usually have is that, despite being listed as a PG for a majority of his career, he is, in fact, a SG. The reason why Basketball Reference lists him as a PG is because during tip-offs, he would line up in the spot where the PG should be because his coaches wanted him to hold the ball first, seeing that he was so effective at both scoring and playmaking. After the first possession though, he would instantly switch to SG as he would usually guard the opposing team's SG. This is part of the reason why the Lakers lost to the Knicks in the Finals twice because West guarded Dick Barnett instead of Walt Frazier (which is also why Frazier went off in Game 7 of the 1970 Finals).

John Stockton: All time assist leader, all time steal leader, 55/4800 NBA players in points all time, two finals appearances, played 19 seaons (Lebron has played 20 seasons so far) and never missed the playoffs, five western conference finals appearances, selected to play on the dream team. So just think about that... There's around 4800 NBA players all time, Stockton is 55th in points, 1st in steals, and 1st in assists. That's legend shit.

You are right in fact I'd go a step further and say it isn't debatable. If you've watched Gary Payton and Westbrook play, there is no way you could rank Westbrook ahead of Payton. Let's pretend we live in another world where Westbrook didn't hog the ball from players like Durant, wasn't a turnover machine and played smart basketball. He still wouldn't be as good of a shooter as Gary Payton.

Also, I don't want to hear about Westbrooks stats because we all know he had a team that helped him purposely pad his stats. If you gave a prime Gary Payton a team that only cared about Gary's stats, then he'd be averaging 30 15 15.
