It was Magnus's smartness to offer pieces for exchange to make things simpler, and make sure Gukesh doesn't unleash a sudden attack, since he would be left with no pieces. He made sure there were not many pieces for weird attack ideas.
And Magnus is anyway too strong for the end game.

Magnus is like a computer when big pieces are off the board. But when they're on the board, there's much more room for creativity and he can't calculate everything.
So, to beat Magnus, you have to keep the big pieces on the board and hope for the best.

@agadmator 8:35 "the biggest problem for Gukesh is that he cannot play c4", you are incorrect. According to the GMs that were analysing and Hikaru, this was the proper move although tough to play. But this is where Gukesh lost the game. After c4, white is rook f3 and you end up 2 passed pawns vs 1 past pawn and with perfect play that would end up in a draw.

No shame in his game for Gukesh. Well played by him. It’s just unfortunate that Magnus was his opponent. Gukesh played with great precision. But that’s where Magnus shines. Keymer tried to create imbalances (at his risk) but knew that was the only way he had a chance against Magnus. Gukesh will need to try to throw a monkey wrench in Magnus’ spoke tomorrow if he’s going to create opportunities to win. He may crash and burn. But hopefully he is clever enough to trip Magnus up. Very few can. But I believe Gukesh certainly has the minerals to do it.

Ra7 really didn’t make sense after you explained it because Gukesh just brought his rook back after the check. To think a tempo made all the difference, such a brutal game. But finding Kc2 after Ra5 would’ve been unreal regardless.

Indians have hilarious names to speakers of other languages ngl. Gukesh is pretty similar to the "you" form conjugation ("gukash") of the Bulgarian verb "gukam" which means to coo (as a baby). So whenever Agad says Gukesh I can't help but say out loud "cooing baby goo goo ga ga" in Bulgarian, which is kinda fitting since he is just 17 anyway :D

This was a masterful game. I think the game Magnus played against Vincent Keiymer was his rate limiting step especially when he made a terrible mistake in the middle game but Keiymer couldn't find the winning move. When Magnus survived that 'rate limiting step', I knew it was all over: HE IS GOING TO WIN THE CUP.
He is in his own league!
