    What do you guys think? I heard a lot of people are having bugs, but I personally haven't experienced any of them. What I did feel is the story is really weak and the dialogue is poorly written. This and the overwhelming amount of jargons really made reading the story miserable.

      The jargon is perfectly fine, it has a musical and sonic theme. Using the same terminology for every game is frankly boring.
      The premise and world building is great but I agree the storyline is weak and filled with unnecessary unimportant chitchat.
      Yes it has flaws but so did most other games including Genshin Impact at first. It has a ton of potential and I think it'll be successful.

      @@Sajuuk I do agree. Once you get past the horrible start, the worldbuilding is actually pretty cool. The idea that everything is made of soundwaves and music has been done before, but never as a full open-world concept.
      They just need to explain it better. While editing this video, I noticed that they just namedrop jargons without explaining its definition, only its consequences.

    The jargon even makes combat confusing, honestly. With Genshin or Star Rail I can read a characters kit and have a pretty good idea what's going on, but Wuwa drops things like "20% Resonance Liberation Deepen" and I'm just ... left staring and going back to button mashing.
    And I'm pretty sure it's just "bonus ultimate damage" but they phrased it in the most absurd way.

      Yeah! The story jargon and the combat jargon sometimes overlap with each other, and it really confused me. You'll get used to it, but it's still a painful process.
      Fortunately, ability writing can be fixed more easily than narrative writings. I think they need to find the time to discuss with the localization team on making standards on ability translation.

    They could also have some kind of glossary in game to help understanding every jargons or weird wording they use similar to what some Visual Novels do (I think Clannad with the dangopedia is the best exemple). Even if at the end of the day it wouldn't help most people since they probably would not read it, anyone who is invested in the story could have an easier time understanding it.

    • @FeyHunt
      @FeyHunt  Před 3 měsíci

      Yes, an in-game wikipedia is a good fix, similar to what Bioware games have done in the past (Mass Effect and Dragon Age). Or something like what Final Fantasy XVI did, which is a pause screen that explains every character and every worldbuilding jargon whenever you like. It's also a good catch-up mechanic if you haven't played the game in a while.
      At least then some people can just point out that "global players can't read".

  • @Reason4Termination
    @Reason4Termination Před 3 měsíci +23

    This is true. The jargon is further exacerbated by the fact that the user just wants to skip everything and go straight to what it is good at: Actual game combat. Especially for something that the player won't even fully invest onto, because they know that they will leave this game on a whim the moment that brief glimpse of power creep gets introduced.

    • @FeyHunt
      @FeyHunt  Před 3 měsíci +3

      That's true. Strangely enough, the tutorial for the combat is well done. It's just the "tutorial" for the story is so bad.
      Power creep though... it's inevitable in any gacha game. Gacha game is never pure skill-based, since that's the guiding principle.

    • @FeyHunt
      @FeyHunt  Před 3 měsíci

      @@furuderika8093 I agree. Gameplay should go first, and WuWa nailed it. It's just a bit of disappointment that the story didn't live up to the gameplay, and I'm here to give them feedback on how to improve it.
      Act 5 is a bit off in terms of story pacing, since you're just waiting for the climax, and that the Black Shores storyline don't contribute to the Act 6 finale. It's just to introduce some new characters for gacha later.
      Act 6 is where the good part is. The music did the heavy lifting to hype you up. It could use some improvements too, but this should be the standard moving forward if everyone wants to call WuWa's story as "good".

    I'm a big fan of a game series called super robot wars which is about collaboration of many MANY different mecha IP into one singular narrative. And given how each series has their own terminology and worldbuilding and whatnot, but its often not hard to follow the story simply because they have their own glossary or wiki page in the game, which you can access even during dialogue.
    For example, a character can mention "one year war" from OG gundam and the word is highlighted so you know theres a context behind it and if you want to know more theres a page dedicated to explaining what it is, and this apply to almost all series specific jargon. No character in the series history ever, iirc, ever resort to obligatory infodump scene where one character need to explain basic knowledge (based on their world) down to other person throat just to make conversation going.
    From my experience none of the gacha that i play has ever done anything similar to this, they always prefer to settle with audience surrogate that need to be spoonfed information early on. And none of em ever put much thought into how their wiki/glossary (or if any at all) is presented in a way thats easier for player to access, instead just put it down behind several menus that only lore nerd gonna read.

    • @FeyHunt
      @FeyHunt  Před 3 měsíci

      That's a great approach if you really need to info dump! Making the resources available in-game when you need them. I think Final Fantasy XVI also did similar thing by allowing a "pause for context" scene in case you forget what each character do.
      One of the issue I noticed in WuWa is that they keep spewing these jargons without explaining what it is. They should slow down and always allow us to ask the characters what those words mean in case we forgot.
      Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience! 😄😄

    A good Editor would give one look at this script and could have easily avoided this problem.
    This is not just WuWa problem alone, most Chinese gaccha games in general have the same issue where dialogue and interaction feels very artificial.
    The most annoying thing about the start of any gaccha game is the info dump which leads to poor pacing and lack of agency in the story and worst thing about the story is how they introduce multiple character one after another for the sake of gaccha before properly building one's storyline and motivation for joining you. The only gaccha game I played which has managed to avoid these issues is PTN.
    Another nitpick I have is how most characters in the story automatically likes the player character and tell you how cool you are rather than allowing you to do some deed to earn their trust.
    I have seen worse case of this in Endfield ,without the context of OG Arknights the world building feels nonsense, pretty ironic considering it's from the IP which is famous for its world building.

    • @FeyHunt
      @FeyHunt  Před 3 měsíci +1

      No, I never claimed any of these problems to be uniquely WuWa. WuWa is just a springboard to jump into the actual topic of the video in "how to not do worldbuilding". However, I do agree from my experience alone. I have only played 4 modern gacha games (Genshin, Honkai 3rd, Arknights, and WuWa), and yes, all of them does have a bad start, some worse than others.
      Your nitpick of characters immediately admiring you is something I share. It doesn't feel earned, which is quite ironic coming from a gacha game where power is sold or build with playtime.
      Keep in mind that developers claimed that they did scrap 90% of the original story and improve it for the last CBT, which is quite concerning. I don't want to know how bad their original story is when this is their best attempt. I would love to be a fly on a wall in Kuro Games HQ to find out how do they fail the story this bad.

    Very much agree. It’s been very confusing playing through the story and I hope they stop using so much jargon. I noticed that more characters started to use TD rather than Tacet Discord, but it’s very inconsistent - some will use both terms in the same sentence. I feel like this is also very unrealistic and confusing, as usually people opt for one or the other when speaking, not both, unless they are trying to explain the meaning to someone who may be unfamiliar with the term(s). Great video! Glad to see this discussion being brought up.

  • @tai467
    @tai467 Před 3 měsíci +1

    To be honest, I think most of the confusion goes from english translation and not really from the writing itself (although I will admit I find the first few chapters to be more on a weaker side)
    Few examples: Tacet Discords in chinese are called Afterforms (aka forms that appeared after Lament), Tacet Fields are called Soundless Areas, Tacetite is just Black Stone and Sentinel stands for Lord of ages. Most of the terms are pretty straightforward in chinese but in Chinese they kinda…can just mishmash several different characters and get a new term. The meaning of every individual characters still will pass whole meaning of the term to reader even if the shape of the term itself will remain somewhat vague.
    It’s hard to do the same thing in english because of different writing systems and language structures. Translators most likely wanted to stick to how in chinese they are using made up terminology to make game feel more fantastic and otherworldly so they tried to come up their own terms using unusual words. I can’t blame anybody in this situation, localising games is hard but ig the could choose an easier route for this one

    • @FeyHunt
      @FeyHunt  Před 3 měsíci

      I see! That's an angle that I didn't cover in this video, since I don't speak Chinese. This seem to be the same problem where the localization and the lore team didn't talk it through enough.
      Genshin did have similar mishaps with translating The Heavenly Principles in its early days. They keep changing its translation in EN, that people didn't make the connection.
      This also explains why there are some words that don't correlate well in the game. For example: "Tacet" is a musical term (rest or silence) and is mostly associated with negative things in the game world, like Tacet Field and Tacet Discord. But then Tacetite and Tacet Mark is seen as a good thing.
      So then the Resonators who have a Tacet Mark (Silence Mark) can kill the Tacet Discord in a Tacet Field... That doesn't make sense. If silence is not good for the world, then how come someone using it is seen as a good thing?
      I think they need to rename these jargons somewhat. The concept is cool, but the execution needs to be fixed.

    • @Nozomi_kun
      @Nozomi_kun Před 3 měsíci

      @FeyHunt  Před 3 měsíci

      @@Nozomi_kun No, it's not an entire solution. It is a contributing factor.
      Had they localize it better, the jargons would be more straightforward, like calling Tacetite as Black Rocks. But it won't help for Tacet Field and Tacet Discord, or the Retroact Rain.
      The dubbing quality is also not great. Lack of direction and intonation. Yangyang and the Rover suffered the most here.

  • @hijodelsoldeoriente
    @hijodelsoldeoriente Před 2 měsíci

    No offense, but the only point I truly agree is solution 4. The issue isn't the jargons or the writing in the macro sense. I think it's the pacing in the micro sense.
    The only mistake they did is the info dump in the beginning. I think a viable solution is to at least either add one act just to spread those world-building jargons or spread them all throughout ACT I-VI and us show and tell which they actually did with the Pangu Terminal, Tacet Field, Tacet Discord, Threnodian, Overlord Class TD, etc.

    • @FeyHunt
      @FeyHunt  Před 2 měsíci

      Well, the point of the video is not about presenting the solution specifically about Wuthering Waves. It is a general writing discussions about how to tackle jargons problem if you're writing a story and receive a criticism about the jargon being confusing.
      I'm using Wuthering Waves as an example to demonstrate it. That's why I phrase it as "the first common solution" and later on said that "this is not the problem with WuWa"
      Solution 1-3 only hits the nitpick part of the problem, healing the symptoms rather than the source of the problem. Solution 4 hits the core problem for WuWa. Different stories might have different solutions.

      Yes, I do feel the same way! I did notice they took the 3 party formula and Intro/Outro from Honkai 3rd, and then mix it with Genshin's open world design.
      They definitely took many inspirations from Genshin (or even copy Genshin's formula). Genshin walked, so WuWa could run.
      Gameplay-wise, WuWa is just a more mature and modern Genshin with a very engaging combat system. There are lots of minor annoyances in Genshin that is fixed in WuWa, like how sprinting doesn't consume stamina or climbing ledges are so streamlined.
      Regardless if you like Genshin or not, WuWa is a good force in the market to challenge Genshin's monopoly. It's quite interesting how many features Genshin added closely near WuWa's launch, like added stamina limit and new game modes. Genshin's gameplay has been quite stale after 4 years of updates.

    Problem is simple, those who are regular players will get more confused. WuWv is not for casual players. I think this might not be a bad things for this game. The combat is actualy difficult when fighting enemy 10 or 20 level higher than you, just like Spiral Abyss. I WOULD SAY GENSHIN IS JUST NERFING ENEMIES FOR CASUAL PLAYERS SAKE, WHICH IS A GOOD THING AS EVERYONE DESERVES TO PLAY A GAME WHICH WON'T MAKE THEM FEEL STRESSED OUT. THAT'S WHY ABYSS IS JUST A IGNORABLE THING IN GENSHIN. AND IT IS TRUE THAT THEY NERFED CHILDE CAUSE HE WAS TOO POWERFUL FOR MANY PLAYERS TO DEFEAT, HIS MOVES WERE FAST AND DAMAGE WAS HIGH. Many players struggled initially go beat him. Also after that Genshin started making boses little weak. The truth is Raiden and Azdaha are in my opinion thr boses that could have been a big threat but they too were nerfed befofe launch. Though Azdaha still kicks some c6 pro even in co-op. Knave too won't spare anyone who is little bit less skilled to time attacks. Even her movement is not fast because players won't be able to hit her or save themselves from damage. Most Genshin players can't dodge either because they are on mobile or they don't learn dodge. But this means Genshin can update combat and movement mechanics. They can add dodge and fast movement mechanics in the combat. And if possible they can also create a combo attacks based on team, not just elemental reaction. But that would make elemental reaction less easy to incorporate.

      I see your point, but narrative exposition should not be limited to just casual or pro players. Funnily enough, I quite enjoyed the casual side quests in this game. They struggle so much with the main story for some reason.
      That being said though, I think I almost beaten a level 45 enemy with my level 20 characters the other night. That was intense! One hit and you're dead. I almost forgot this is not Dark Souls. The skill ceiling for this game must be so damn high if you want to go for it.
      Combat is also the reason why I left Genshin. Dodging is never necessary in that game, since you can heal 40K health character from 0 to full in just like 5 seconds. If any of them are down? Just use the food. The boss is staggered? Great, do your 1 million damage combo.
      I know gacha games are not supposed to be entirely skill-based, but Genshin is really pushing it. That game never demanded your mechanical skill, just how much time you have to find the right substats artifacts.
      I left Genshin in their third desert expansion a year ago, so I don't know if the new bosses are that great. But knowing the core design I mentioned earlier, I doubt it's a challenge that need you to think.

      @@FeyHunt maybe, I can't bwat higher level as I am only playing on Tab right now. If I spend some time on PC mechanics I think I can get a hang of combos and easily dodge or counterattack in WuWv. Right boses in open world were never difficult in Genshin. Only Abyss at floor 12 had challenge. And I started 1 year back, but cleared flloor 12 just 4 months ago. Now that I have powerful characters and supports it's way too easy. Only for 1 minute you will feal the heat maybe if you are not playing on PC. WuWv character movements are very smooth compared to Genshin. @@arch391 That heat is the reason why I think WuWa's overworld is much more exciting than Genshin.
      I think Genshin would be so much better if the overworld enemy is as hard as the floor 10 in the Abyss. At least then, there are some challenges.
      That being said, from my experience, the Abyss is usually more of a DPS check than actual threat of dying. So I don't think inflating the health number for the enemies are a good thing either.
      I would give it to you, Genshin is far better in terms of the simplicity of its design. WuWa often feel a bit bloated when it comes to combat. It's something you need to get used to.
      One thing I'm wondering is if WuWa would be smart enough to NOT put any worm enemies. Remember the Setekh or that drilling boss in the Abyss? I hope they don't make those bosses with long invulnerability frame.

    Honestly, they didn't even need to specify each type of waveworn phenomenon because all of it can be boiled down to abnormalities. Idk but is this also a problem to other languages? English translation is bit on the mediocre side, a redub would be nice. K-on had a terrible English dub at first, then they redubbed it.

      Scar is certainly interesting, but I think a lot of people gave it more credit than normal. To me, I already got the gist of his ideals 2 minutes in, but we still need to entertain his theatrics. That is fine.
      The not so great part is that he doesn't make any paralels in his story. Who is this shepherd? What is his take on the current government?
