- The 2016 Haunted Hyundai Santa Fe was towed to my shop for repairs.
I drove it into the garage...didn't feel any misfires but it made the biggest BLUE SMOKE SCREEN I have ever seen coming up the lane xD
Let's take this thing for a test drive and gather some more data before giving the customer a detailed estimate for repairs. Some parts will definitely be required...but which ones?

Just a note if chains are replaced on this engine the crank sprocket will need to be replaced due to a root depth issue with new chains. New chains will break the crank sprocket almost instantly. I used to be a hyundai tech and there is a TSB on this!
Well as far as I was taut, replacing chains must always go with replacing the sprockets, not only on cars. The reasoning behind was, it is not the chain what goes bad, but the sprockets are the thing that uses to go first. The chain is only "adopting" towards the sprocket wear/damage. So replacing just the chain means the new one will very soon become in the same state as the old one was, so all the chain and labor cost just went down the drain...
Another great holiday treat. Thank You Ivan. 👍
Looks like this Hyundai is ready for the red line challenge. I admire your great knowledge and skill bringing these cars back from the graveyard.
This is such a great case study Ivan. Cannot wait for Part 3. Just love all your videos. Happy Easter
Happy Easter, Stephen!
I had a similar issue with an 07 Hyundai Azera. Cam crank correlation code. Replaced both intake and exhaust oil control valves/VVT solenoid. Code went away, but now got multiple misfire code. Looked at O2 sensor data and found bank 1 sensor 1 was bad, as well as bank 2 sensor 1. Replaced both, and everything is fixed. Was pretty proud of myself for being able to fix it myself, when the dealership ship wanted $1,000+ to just do the Oil control valves/VVT solenoids. Also make sure to use OEM Hyundai/Kia oil control/VVT solenoids! Aftermarket ones don't work or will break fast. Don't trust them to control your engines cam timing. Eric O had a Kia come in with a similar issue, and it turns out to be a bad VVT solenoid: czcams.com/video/aWJLUzqK0r0/video.html
Ivan, Happy Easter! I just plain and simply can't tell you enough, how much I enjoy your videos and trouble shooting. Thank you for sharing with us!
Thank you and my pleasure!
It never ceases to amaze me how sensitive 02 sensors can be. They can take such extreme amounts of heat over and over again. But don't get the probes wet. Getting any fluids on the 02 sensor probe, will ultimately ruin them. I'm still not convinced that this engine needs a timing set though. I guess we shall see once the valve cover comes off. Great content so far Ivan! Can't wait to see part 3 and what the smoking gun for the timing issue truly is.
Ivan, runs a little better. Fixing it one problem at a time. Happy Easter. Thanks for Sharing!
Nice work! And Happy Easter! Thank You Ivan
I'm really enjoying this series, my condolences to the owner that I'm getting so much joy, but not because he's miserable. Fascinated by this vehicle.
Careful Ivan. Many more of these cliff hanger episodes and Netflix could come a knocking!
Happy Easter to you and familia
Make quick like a bunny...I can't wait for the next part of this series! 🐇
Happy Easter Ivan.
Great job Ivan. To double check the diag before getting into the engine mechanics!
For sure. Peeling back the Hyundai onion lol
Your knowledge and skill brilliant
Happy Easter Ivan
Professor Pine is making progress. Onto part 3
I believe this car has many more Easter eggs and a big chocolate bunny waiting for Ivan
How many more easter eggs🤣, It one big easter egg from factory!!
i started to get de ja veux with you and eric o with the hyundai tucson twisted cam
I always maintain at Least a quarter tank of fuel in my vehicles. For the fuel pumps sake.🙂
Funny story about that. I always kept over 1/2 tank in my truck and I got fuel one day no problem, filled it up, parked and went to start it after and the fuel pump was dead dead lol. 90k miles. Good ole GM
@@BoweryPenguin8 GM pumps are garbage. They fail if the run dry for a few seconds. Bosch pumps get run dry several times and keep working fine. I have cars with 300,000 miles on the original Bosch pump, you don't typically hear that story on the GM pumps.
E is actually not empty. Engineers are smarter than you think. They know how people are. I've found my truck has about 2 extra gallons in the bottom of the tank. I don't keep it full after the tank got drilled.
@@MTLeopold Ford engineers were smarter with the new cars. You can't run out of gas in a newer Ford. The engine will shut off a couple miles after the fuel range says 0 (zero miles range).
The second you put more fuel in the tank, it will instantly start up because the system never ran dry.
Ask me how I know!
Most manufacturers set low fuel light with 10% remaining to stop the pump overheating so if you figure you can go another 50+ miles with the fuel light on it will get expensive if you do it often.
you can hear it's not in time, these engines aren't suppose to rattle like that. 3.3 GDI is in dozens of kia/hyundai I've had great luck with the older 3.5L
I was wondering about the rattle... It didn't seem right, but it's one of those things I wouldn't have been able to give an opinion on besides "it sounds questionable".
The GDI engine engines in KIA’s sound terrible. My 2.0 turbo GDI is embarrassing to me. Same noise now as when new, right from that pump area. The noise this engine has though is not the same and something is wrong in there.
All I can say is the owner is lucky he ran into you otherwise he would have had to mortgage his home to get this one fixed. Nice Job Ivan!
Looking like over fueling sticking injector . Is the hi pressure pump working as it should . Lets see if timing off I don't think so let's see part 3. 😁
Just had this same thing on a 15 Sorento v6, bank 2 intake cvvt pin can apart and tore the cvvt up causing timing code and misfires on the bank. Replace cvvt and camshaft
Mosquito Commission In Full Force haha
Wonder how bad the timing chain is
Wow, this car has a mind of its own, at first not showing any cam correlation code and now it is. Same with 02 sensor?? What up with that? Lol? Becoming possessed car, lol. Let's see what part 3 brings. Timing chain job! Haha 😄 happy Easter, Ivan!
It would have been cool if you grounded the control valve again after replacing the O2 sensors and took it for a test drive. I'll bet the trims would've shown the timing issue. Happy Easter to you and your wife
If you're gonna do the job, do it right the first time! Don't try to cheap out! Chains, sprockets, tensioners, guides, water pump, any "O" rings, new coolant, new engine oil and oil filter. Expensive, but done right! BTDT!
Be careful Ivan. After finding so many Easter eggs you could come up with a smelly one. I’m interested in seeing where this one goes. Cam timing sounds about right. Maybe a plugged catalyst? We shall see
Oh my Gosh ........ I feel so sorry for everyone involved.
When valve cover on bank 2 was off,if the engine was turned over using the camshaft bolt can cause timing issues.
When checking for o2 circuit integrity, did you apply test light to positive to both the green high and the white low wire? Great video!
Could the mechanism or solenoid that controls the variable timing be temperamental?
I pulled up behind a Hyundai Azera yesterday that was chuffing white smoke out of just one tailpipe. I'm not sure if the pipe on the other side is real or cosmetic, but if it's real, smoke on one side seems like a Bad Thing.
My 2013 Santa Fe has p0018/p0021 code & also dealership said quote intake

Using freeze frame data fount

We' startup which indicates Failed Zockine

job… So what should I do??? It runs fine & drives great & never did it ever stall or misfire.. Also one other thing do you think I just need to replace the solenoids??? Please I need help..
@Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics. Hey Ivan! Happy Easter!
Thanks Carlos!
A little mini series we've got going here.
My guess would be a stuck injector or leaking seal on the high pressure pump causing it to run so rich and maybe a bad O2 sensor and That's what caused the chains to fail originally and now again because it shouldn't make that scraping sound like chain rubbing off plastic
Ivan 10:03 look at In-Cam Bank 2 Actual vs Desired - the others all agree. I know you already fixed this as I have more video parts to watch (I'm late to the party and playing catch up) - but man sometimes you gotta slow down to go fast (heard that somewhere :) ). Of course I have the retrospective benefit of seeing this as a video in the comfort of my home while for you it was but a fleeting display of numbers on the screen.
Would be nice to be able to overlay graphs for PIDs on those scan tools - so you could overlay the two PIDs for Desired and Actual for each thing - would make it super easy to see discrepancies. Maybe Keith could feed that suggestion into whatever operation he is working with now :)
I guess the same could work well for the Pico software. Where you were hopping back and forth between windows to compare waveforms before and after manually advancing the cam. How about the ability to set your 0 - 720 cursors on each, then set one waveform to have a transparent background so you can slide it over the other to see the comparison. That'd be nice.
I'm working on my Nissan truck now and the catalytic converter is glowing bright yellow-orange. RAW GAS.
The truck barely idles without help. The driveline was binding (universal joints?) and I think it threw the timing belt off.
When it warms up out here in Oregon I will check it. I love watching PHAD.
A glowing cat is a sure sign of a timing fault. Just a few degrees off on the crank will do it. 🙀
How the hell would a driveline issue cause a timing issue. That’d be like every time you loaded the engine up a hill a timing issue would pop up
With this Hyundai smoking so badly without excess crankcase pressure even at low revs could the problem be a poor/wrong fuel problem especially as the fuel tank is nearly empty meaning oil etc in the fuel is being burned?
So the VVT's go bad or the screens get plug from the lock of oil changes???
You know the 10,000 mile oil changes that are common know days.
Just taking a case...
Diluted oil and or bad rings(blue smoke)O2 sensor or bad gas?
"The owner said he just changed oil before it really started acting up" - That set off alarm bells. Is it the right oil? Maybe it's too thin allowing it to get in the cylinder. Is it possible that the new oil knocked some crud lose? And we have yet to have a theory for why the blue smoke. I think we need to take a hard look at what's happening oil-wise here. I'm wondering if there's a blockage in the head's drain, allowing oil to pool in the head and leak down the valve stems. Messed up oil will mess up the VVT.
This engine definitely has mechanical issues, the transducer data is not a product of a guesswork type of testing. What exactly is wrong, for that we'll have to wait for part 3 😁
About 9 minutes in there is a definite lope in that engine
I thought the Astra was crazy.
I believe Hyundai do crazy things like not having keyed crankshaft sprockets ,friction locked with the crank pulley bolt but that would put both banks out of time?
As an FYI that vehicle has an open service campaign involving the auxiliary canister.
It's time to jack that thing up, and drive a new car under it. You know with so much tech built in these new cars. With their dash monitor. It wouldn't be that hard for them to build the self diagnostics into them. You know like telling the the part number of the defective part. Provide diagrams. I know a lot of people are going to take their vehicles into a shop for repair anyway But for those of us that have always taken care of our own repairs. It would be the greatest thing since sliced bread.
I’ll ask this again has there been a recall??????
No more blue smoke...Italian tune up success. Interesting concerns because the owner said the vehicle drove very good for a couple of days they all went south. O2 sensors, timing chains etc. don't add up yet.
I seriously doubt there is anything wrong with the timing chain.
Maybe the solenoid is bad or the control is getting shorted somewhere.
@@davidparker9676 I think it's the Oil Control Valves/VVT Solenoids
hi Ivan, off topic, rust free 95k diesel jeep liberty on Craigslist maine, aka the unicorn..
How is it rust-free in Maine??
Maybe that upstream will only peak in ratio with downstream
Why are you beating the cam timing to death? You already saw that it's off with the scope. By the sound of the death rattle that engine is making there's a chain flapping around in there.
Ghost In The Machine
Lots of rockauto boxes. Lol
How da heck can it run well with an intake timing issue? Is the variable timing able to compensate enough for a mechanical timing problem to allow it to be out of time and still run half-decent? Or is it the variable timing system itself throwing it out of time, and mechanically it's sound? Sheesh...
it is a V6 so 3 of the cylinders are running perfectly
If it has 200hp out of 300hp, it will still drive "ok" :)
Why is the engine ticking?
I'm still wondering: How the heck could such cam timing misalignment develop on its own? Or was someone messing with it?
You will find out soon, and your mind will be blown haha :)
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Sounds more interesting than a tensioner :) twisted part? The suspense!
First time I ran into you was the blue kia with a twisted cam at Eric's shop, that was a cool case study.
Maybe no woodruff keys on the cam gears. Seems to be the latest stupid idea from several automakers.
twisted cam at SMA, or this is more interesting?
@@jeffleach2668 lol. We almost screwed the timing in a ford transit van. Went to go pull the crank pulley, only doing a seal at this point. My brain stopped and went let's look up service data, the labour paid to do it versus what I'd done was too good to be true. Boy was I right. Need to get the valve cover off lock timing...welp it'll be our problem next week when we get the tools in.
Happy Easter Ivan and your beautiful wife to which I have a brain fart and have forgotten her name, oops!!! Cant wait to see the next part!
Thanks Roxanne! I'll tell Amanda :)
👍
Maybe that's why hi Hyundai put a carbon activated filter or clean air as they call it because they knew it would smoke like crap or as voice grip garage would say anti mosquito device
Ivan the high pressure fuel pump is leaking internally, dripping into the valve cover, down to the crankcase, getting sucked back up through the pcv and burned as a rich condition
It's brand-new OEM! Plus that would affect BOTH banks equally...but Bank 1 is running perfect :)
surprised the engine hasn't destroyed itself yet with that much gas inside
it's there, the damage has been done. Might as well find a replacement at this point. LOL. I'm sure after the timing issue is fixed, all the scoring on the cylinder walls will start to burn significant amounts of oil shortly after the repair. If I was this gentleman, I would have declined the repair based on that fact alone.
This engine has suffered severe damage in the process, rest assured.
Timing is off from the initial Diagnosis .
When do we set it on fire?
When a cat gets clogged with fuel and or clogged it will show low compression been there done that last week.
Y I K E S
In my opinion the o2 sensors should be replaced on a regular basis kind of a modern day tune up regiment.
If everything else is well and the sensors are high quality, they should last 100-200k km no problem. So most cars would get junked by then
That used to be the case with non-heated O2 sensors before OBD-II. Now my rule of thumb is if one sensor fails, then recommend replacing all of them at once...kind of like if one headlight bulb burns out, just replace both since they have equal lifespan :)
I thought blue smoke means oil burning!!🤔
Throw the whole armory in its general direction
sure it doesn't have diesel in it?
I bet the pin on the intake cam sheared off and it moved seen it many times
Do you work at a Hyundai dealership or something? haha
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics no I'm a master tech benn doing this for 22 years now I used to work in Lancaster and in Exton. All my family lives in Clearfield so I watch all your videos. I have replaced quite a few cams on the hyundai and kia line of cars. Live stream data usually shows about 100 degrees offset when the pins break. But still love your content.
@@CourtneyTidwell has the cam ever shifted enough to bend valves?
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics no I haven't seen any bent valves yet I've done a few on the v6 engines they are more common to break on the 4cyls though. Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see what you find.
blue smoke is oil burning
Is it possible to be stuck some injector?
No, otherwise it would have a single-cylinder misfire :)
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics i mean open injector...
My wife's RAV 4 is a 2016. No issues with chains or sprockets. What kind of crap does Hyundai build. I have never seen issues like this on any Toyota we have owned. When we see the camshafts, we will know if it was poor maintenance or poor quality.
Place your bets now!

I don't like Hyundai or Kia. They are wooing people over with their initial quality, but I still feel they're junk cars to run over 100k. They also have the most large engine mechanical issues of all the brands. (Maybe not bmw) but they're up there. I'd never buy one for anything but a dirt cheap beater.
@@volvo09 to think in the US at one time all they sold was excel and scoupe...
@@volvo09 had an 07 Hyundai Azera get up to 203,000mi. Before it got totaled by hitting a deer. My parents have a 2010 sonata with 215,000+mi on it. Still going strong. The engine issues are mainly the 2011-2019 vehicles with the theta ii GDI engine. The smart stream engines should be fine. But they're too new to tell.
I feel sorry for the owner, seems like a nice guy and has all of this financial outlay and inconvenience. Looking forward to the conclusion of this one. Saw all of the empty Rock Auto boxes in your garage, I'm a recent convert to them, my last purchase was a Denso fuel pump kit, arrived super quick and was the genuine article for less than $100. No longer buy stuff from A Mason and Flea Bay, some of their parts are very very questionable and are not always as described.
To answer your question of how many Easter Eggs the Hyundai has in store, how about 666, lol.
RockAuto is great! Ebay sometimes is the only source for outdated OEM parts though :)
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Agree. Ebay can also be good if the part is not time critical. One of the center plastic wheel caps on my 2004 Sequoia came off (or was stolen) so I needed a replacement. Of course OEM was out of the question, US based Ebay sellers were asking over $30, but as you know there are Chinese based sellers, and they are obviously a LOT cheaper. Obviously it was weeks later when I received the part but got it for $10 which included shipping, and is identical to the other 3 caps. I could have gone to a junk yard but you can easily spend 10, maybe 20 dollars getting there especially driving a vehicle like the Sequoia, lol!
None sounds like surgery is on the way doctor
It's not He He He. More like ZZZzzz.. Sort of a snore.
Just another reason not to buy Hyundai....LOL
You can't diagnose an O2 sensor if the cam timing is off. Start with the basics and work your way out.
It's CZcams content. Bet he makes twice the income from CZcams than he charges the customer.
I would beg to differ...
You should at least be able to force it lean during decel fuel cut.
Granted you are sort of going on a gut feeling and experience when looking at other data, but there are some situations you can force and if it won't even show that properly you know you have a problem.
Sure you can. I just did lol
I don't like the sound of that engine, or they rattle like that on those cars.
Drives me crazy you drive these cars with no seat belt. MY FREEDOMS!!! Your wife will be pissed if you get killed on a narrow 2 lane highways just to prove a political point. Remember the Ford Powerstroke guy that killed himself by getting throw out? Same attitude.
