  • We spent an amazing week in Borneo with Dr. Birute Galdikas, the world's foremost orangutan expert. Originally funded by Loius Leakey, Dr. Galdikas has spent the last 47 years in the forest trying to save orangutans from extinction.

    These precious and endangered orangutans need our help. If each of us could donate $10 to the BOS Foundation, we could accomplish a great deal as a group who enjoy watching these videos which are worth more than the $10 donation. That money would be useful for food, vets and Medicine, fuel for rescue-and-return jeeps and boats, help with wages, and so much more. Since we can't be there, much as we would like to, we can certainly afford $10 each as a donation to The BOS Foundation and as a sign of appreciation for getting to see these precious creatures on these videos. This is especially a good time since it is a season of Thanksgiving and giving.

      How do i go about volunteering at BOS? I have been volunteering since i was 8...i am a very experienced animal carer and i am used to monkeys...i am a very basic person I don't need accomodation because i have a hammock...i am as tough as old boots and i have lived and worked in 25 countries...i have many skills including driving trucks and buses and motor bikes...and last but not least I can donate regularly.. hoping for an early reply. I have been living in Thailand for 10 years.

    I love these gorgeous people of the forest so much. The babies are so stinking cute and funny. They're such gentle animals, although adult males can be a bit aggressive if they aren't used to humans. I've never heard of an orangutan killing a human being before. Please read labels and don't buy products containing palm oil.

    We need to understand that being at the top of the pyramid of creation means that everything we do trickles down the structure, from top to bottom. When it reaches the bottom, the inanimate level of reality, from which everything grows, it changes it. If we ooze ill-will, it creates negative changes throughout the system, which manifest in increasingly extreme climatic and geological events.
    In other words, when human relationships go out of balance, everything goes out of balance. When our relations become extreme, everything becomes extreme; when we become violent, everything becomes violent. Each summer, the ramifications of the linkage between our relations and our world become more extreme, until we acknowledge that everything that exists, exists in a connected, hierarchical system and that whoever is at the top determines the state of the rest of the system.
    It is not as if previously, we were better people than we are today. It is simply that there were fewer people, and therefore fewer elements that exude ill will.
    Also, relationships between people in the past were less toxic than they are today. While there are fewer wars today than ever, the levels of suspicion and alienation between people are skyrocketing, to the point where people can no longer trust their own family members. As a result, wars between countries are rarer than ever, but divorce rates, domestic violence, and violence in the community, are at an all-time high.
    Even the internet, which we invented purportedly in order to connect people, is being used to abuse, deceive, and exploit people. The world-wide-web proves that everything we create, we use against others. When there is such a negative element in a system, and that element is at the top of the system, how can the entire system not go awry?
    Therefore, if we want the weather to cool, the sea-level to drop, and the storms to subside, we must cool the fire and calm the storms between us. Mutual concern, mutual responsibility, or at least the knowledge that we are dependent on each other, are necessary in order to restore balance in our world at all levels, from the ground we walk on to the hatred in our hearts.

    Am I the only one who thought the keepers should of stopped the male? The female wanted NO PART of his affections. She even tried covering her female parts and he bullied her into submission. She was screaming and trying to get away, even grabbing on to her baby for help, security or comfort while she was being RAPED by the more powerful, double + her weight male. Her baby was still young and she would not of bred again till the baby was 7 or 8 years old and not clinging to her anymore. At the appropriate time she should of been mated she would of looked for him and would of even flirted to get his attention. The male was mad and frustrated from the long journey and being locked in the cage all the time the females were eating and drinking. He took his frustration out on the first thing he could by raping this poor female. It could if been stopped with a high pressure water gun. I think this was terrible and the rape should if been stopped!!! What do you think?

      @@lilliantrevino6940 She could not of been in heat. Animals do not come in heat until the baby/babys are still nursing or are about to be weaned. Which in the case of Oragutans, the baby would be at least 6 yrs old and definatly not be clinging to mom any more. That is why some animals like lions, zebras, and countless other animals kill all the off spring that is not sired by him. If the baby's are gone, or no one is nursing the oxytocen levels go down and the estrogen levels go up and then the females come in heat. Once they come in to heat the females of most animal solicit the male. That poor female was raped and it probably tore the crap out of her. She had no choice he was to strong. Oragutans hate water, that is why I think a high pressure water gun would of backed him off once he approached her.

    • @lauriemclaren8268
      @lauriemclaren8268 Před 4 lety +4

      That is actually fairly normal orangutan behavior. The male sees, wants, grabs, has a go and this whether or not the female wants it. Forced consortship is what the academics call the behavior, I believe. Then the male takes off and leaves the female. They tend towards being much more solitary than other great apes tend to be. While chimps, gorillas and bonobos live in family or societal structures, orangutans tend to generally lack that to a large degree. So when a relatively young, unflanged male sees an opportunity he takes it. Heck a dominant fully flanged male will yank a female out of a tree and copulate with her with her baby crawling all over the action. Remember these aren’t people but animals with wild instincts. Humans have concepts of consent, right and wrong, etc. Orangutans do not share such ideas. While highly intelligent, their mating practices seem brutal to us, they aren’t people and I would hesitate to interpret their mating behaviors in the context of human or western morals.
      That being said, to see such wild and seemingly brutish behavior (however normal for the species) can be distressing to people who are sensitive to individual rights of consent.

    Why in the world are you giving them milk and all the food they want . These are supposed to be wild animals and now you have taking away the need to scavenge now they just wait by a platform for milk and cookies . Wow I understand the want to save them protect them but we need to stop letting them get accustomed to someone yells and we get milk and cookies. I feel your doing more harm then good is all. Maybe instead of a platform make it a bit more challenging drop food in random spots everyday make them earn it . Wow next we will see them in dippers.
