  • Adam Savage shows off one of the most important parts of his workshop: his tool boxes. Learn why Adam takes so much pride in how he sorts and stores the screws, nuts, washers, bearings, and other parts he uses for his build projects. Organization is beautiful!

Adam, you may be interested to know the Huot Dispensers you own were the end result of another OCD person...My Grandpa, Gene Huot was a tool & die maker and before he invented the drill index, most folks kept their bits in a cigar box. When he needed a bit he had to hunt through that box which bugged him to no end... One day in a moment of brilliance the drill index was invented and 90 years later we're still making them right here in the USA.
Love your show and keep up the great work,
    John Huot

Oh and by the way, to Mr. Savage, what a phenomenal setup you have for building (nearly) anything. I take this information as learning advice... learning from another individuals' past mistakes into knowing what works and is trouble free for a workshop to function more easily. Thanks for sharing!

I'm sure I'm not the only one who went shopping for these after seeing Adam's video. It looks like his setup was a van rack that had a mobile base added. I finally got pricing on a similar setup - Sortimo has just started offering rolling racks of their own, the T-Boxx Tower. A 2x12 tower with 24 boxes is a little over $3k. Like Adam said, it's an investment.

    • @n1vg
      @n1vg Před 8 lety +14

I've been using a lot of the smaller Bosch/Sortimo i-Boxx53 trays so I built a couple of 5-tray racks for them out of 3/4" square steel tubing and 1/4" square steel bar for the rails. Each rack cost me about $10 for materials and assembly was pretty easy, even for a novice at MIG welding. I can write up some notes on the build if anyone's interested, but here's the end result: imgur.com/a/muJG8

Sortimo's system costs 5-20 times that of their competitors, but only offers marginally better performance. There are times when it's worth it to spring for the high dollar stuff, spending $80 (ea) on plastic sorting trays isn't one of those times.

For anyone wanting to build a stock of nuts and bolts, for larger sizes (1/4" and up) go to a Tractor Supply or Farm Supply place - they sell standard sized nuts, bolts, washers etc by the pound. far far cheaper than any other way of buying them.

Adam, I love you sortimo and of course I had to have one or my version of one so I followed the youtubes sortimo for cheap skates by re-purposing an old cheap steel shelving unit with extra part into my base-line "El-cheap skatemo-sortimo" by adding extra shelf's 4" apart I can put two trays on each still have extra parts. Mine has 10 trays with room for 12 trays and is without wheels most people have built and used small cheap casters I didn't and here is why. I have a heavy rolling aircraft tool chest, with an 18"x 27" roll-away it spent the bulk of its working life at Northrup aircraft. It sits on a base of 1" plywood, about 4" bigger then the foot print of the tool box with 4 large industrial casters. This was done because the facility was on various levels and used ramp of various grades to give access the facility. Sometimes when we rolled a tool box down a ramp, they can tip over because they can be top heavy. this can damage a chest and block a ramp The wheels sit outboard of the chest's foot print giving it a larger foot print and reducing the risk of a tip-over. Consider that the foot print of a single standard Harbor Freight parts tray is about 50% of the size of my rolling tool chest so it is most likely to be 200% more likely to tip-over. So increase the foot print of the casters by moving them 3-4 Inches outside the foot print. Plus the bigger casters roll over small nuts and bolt better than the little hard plastic ones. Also don't under estimate the weight of your Nuts and Bolts, once I filled even part way fill my trays they weight 10-15 Lbs. each on average and it adds up quick I have 10 trays right now and the 100-150 Lbs. total. So when I add another 2 trays that will make my total weight 120-160 Lbs. I wanted to get this out because the plastic trays will not do well in a tip-over.

I love the storage system described in the video, but the trays are pretty expensive. I found a solution I could afford. A large hardware store (guess which one) has similar trays priced at about $11 for two. Although the individual compartments don't come out, they can have some of the dividers removed to create larger spots, and I found small (almost tiny) food containers that fit well inside the smallest compartments, so it's a poor-man's version. I built a rolling rack for them. I used dowels to create shelves of a sort for the storage trays, plywood for the top and bottom, and MDF for the back and sides.
    .
Rather than cut the bottom, top and back panels to about 16" wide (the width of the trays plus the thickness of the side panels) I left them 24" wide and offset the rack to one side. That gave me extra space on the top of the unit and a sizable about of space off to one side. I attached an old wire shelf vertically to the empty space, held in place with video cable clips that work perfectly as hinges. I can store lightweight tools on the vertical shelf, and it swings out so I can store tall, thin items behind it.
    .
I did make a couple of mistakes on this. The silliest one is that I painted it after it was all built. That means that in order to paint the back wall inside, I had to reach my hand back there and I got white latex paint all over my arm. Also, I didn't realize until afterwards, but water-based paints will cause MDF to swell just a little. Ordinarily it wouldn't be a problem, but these storage trays come with clips to serve as a second backup locking mechanism for the lids, and these clips also allow you to lock stacked trays together. Before painting, the trays fit in there perfectly, but with the MDF swelling (not enough to even see), the inside was now too narrow to fit the trays with clips attached. I removed the clips and it all worked. The best part of the whole project: I still have all twelve fingers. Here are a couple of photos on Facebook. So Adam, if you're still getting comments after six years, thanks for the inspiration!
    .

Sortimo is a beautiful system, but like many I don't want to dedicate the cash to part storage. I use the poor-mans version from Harbor Freight (mentioned a few times in replies here in the comments). The boxes are similar with the modular inserts that contain all but the smallest/flattest parts and they go for something like $4-10 a box depending on size and if on sale. Not the same quality by a long shot I'm sure...but the price difference is huge. I've got probably 30 of the cases and have been using them for the last several years and am very pleased. The smaller rectangular ones fit nicely on their side in the bottom drawers of one of my rolling cabinets with a label on the side for quick access to precision fasteners, switches, LEDs, etc...

For those looking for a cheaper, and smaller scale set up to Adam's sortimo look into the Bosch L boxx. They are actually made by sortimo under the Bosch name and are cheaper and easier to locate in the US.

Awesome video, did you build or purchase the Sortimo rack? I was hoping to find something similar to Festool's SYS-PORT-1000 for the Sortimo T-BOXXes.
