    we are definitely going to expect some heart breaking moments, as you mentioned, death of Mariko is around the corner and I also believe one of my favorite characters is going to die heroically; Hiromatsu. Tokugawa Ieyasu lost one of his most loyal generals and an old friend just before the battle of the sekigahara , he was to defend a castle to his last breath even though he was outnumbered greatly, and he defended the castle heroically to his last breath and caused the enemy great losses. I'm also getting to like Yabushige's character just because I'm fond of his actor, Tadanobu Asano, a pure comedian midst of chaotic world of shogun. I believe he is going to die honorably which might be another tragedy; a tragedy we might not consider yet.

    This is a significant diversion from the book that I'm not sure what will happen next. Crimson Sky was never intended to attack Osaka, but was a drive to Kyoto and the emperor. Ishido is too strong in Osaka.
    In the book and mini-series, Toranaga agreed to go to Osaka, but was allowed to go on his own. I don't know how he will get out from his brother's escort. Looking forward to next week.

    One of the luxuries for screenwriters writing for a 10-part TV series is they have a 10-hour long movie both to develop and pace the arc of a story, unlike in a feature movie where everything has to be compressed within a 2-hour span. At the same time, they could take time to develop the internal journey of the protagonist. The original (1977) Star Wars was just 1 hour and 21 minutes of running time, but we see the boy hero, Luke, made the internal journey from being a callow youth living on a small desert planet to being a fighter pilot with the Zen of The Force.
    At Episode 7 (with 3 more to go), we see that Ajin-san Blackthorne has not changed much internally: he is still that barbarian with European ways and attitude-his internal journey, though there are flashes (his righting up of the Zen Garden stone, for example), is yet to fulfill its arc.

    In Episode 1, the storytellers invested quite a significant part of precious movie time to Lord Yabusige's obsession with a person's passing into death. Said one of his men, "My lord, he's obsessed with the moment of death. When you are powerless and it's inevitable-how a man faces such a moment."
    That is an internal journey, and man, Yabusige in Episode 1 feels to me like a BIG SETUP. We will see the payoff before this very well-made series is over.
    Post Note:
    Episode 8 has the title, "The Abyss of Life." Sounds like a dead giveaway.

Fuji will raise the child king. Ojin and his uncle will die as traitors after fighting for Toranaga as he has already stripped them of all assets. Blackthorn will be reunited with his crew and take out the Portuguese priests but never leave Japan. The Willow community will be built in the future as Tornaga will use the consorts to poison/kill the enemy and gain information while servicing them.

    Toranaga utilized birds and spies for communication, suggesting the possibility of his seeking reinforcements directly from Edo, without his advisor's awareness.

    I think Toranaga and blackthorne have a plans during episode 7 Buntaro pleads with his father to ride out and gather the rest of Toranagas army at Edo or something so Toranaga still has men in reserve and blackthorne mentions again about his ship and also mentions that Osaka and no major Japanese city has defenses against an attack from the sea. So I think Toranaga is faking his surrender and enter Osaka while balckthorne will ambush Osaka from the sea while Buntaro rushes the cities gates and Marako is on the inside of Osaka dealing with the hostages and probably looking to kill lady Ochiba. But I think we’re going to see Toranaga kill his brother next episode and take Osaka while Ishido flees which will set up the battle of Sekigahara

      @@giannisv.4472it was intentional. The central theme of the entire episode is “fate”. You will notice the word is repeated numerous times throughout the episode. Nagakado believed that if he died in battle it would be a beautiful death, he believed that to be his fate. Little did he know his true fate would be a slippery rock, not armed men on the battlefield, to cause his ultimate demise. In the words of Gin, fate is like a sword, useful only to those who can wield it. Nagakado despite being the son of a great warlord, never had the temperament and wit to dictate his own fate.

    Fuji-san is far more likeable than Mariko. I can only thank the Japanese experts for correcting the female writing crew that was going all girl-power and throwing historical accuracy to the wind once again. But their writing has led to Mariko being off & on all the time, when in the old tv series and the books, she is far more friendly and loving to the Anjin-san.
    (Spoilers possibly) ......I'm gutted they've cut out the sailor's dance, the Anjin almost committing seppuku in front of Yabu and the greater love story between Mariko and the Anjin. It's good television, but just sad when people think they can tell the story better than the original author and make changes. Still, my thanks to the Japanese crew and advisors for steering the feminists back on course.

    • @jonfreeman9682
      @jonfreeman9682 Před měsícem +6

      The female characters are really well written in the context of Japan back in those days. Not sure about girl boss but Fuji and Mariko are both well written and acted and we may get the one true girl boss who is the true puppet master. This show is a political chess game with so many moving pieces that you can bet Toranaga has planned something and John Blackthorne isn't going to just stand on the sidelines. And don't worry that sailor dance is coming.

    • @Imhotep-Still-Juicy
      @Imhotep-Still-Juicy Před měsícem +3

      @@jonfreeman9682 I would love to think they will include the sailor's dance that should have already happened, though I can understand the change, but not the exclusion of it entirely, so I dearly hope you're correct that it will come : ). But with respect, you may have missed the point of what I wrote, which is that I find Fuji-san more likeable as a character and Mariko to be 'off & on' with her behaviour around Blackthorne. If we had already had the Anjin-san Seppuku scene, there would be a far greater respect and rapport between Mariko and the Anjin. I referenced something I had learnt, which was that the female writing team had actually written the female characters once again for modern audiences and that Japanese advisors steered them back onto an historically accurate course. I appreciate you may disagree with my assessment or reaction, but hopefully you understand my opinion comes from a place of cherishing both the novel and the classic television series. Like I said, this is good television and some of the changes make sense to me, but Mariko feels off in the way she is portrayed against what her character is in the book. Thanks for your comment though and all the best.

      For me, I actually like the toned down romance between Mariko and Blackthorne. I prefer more of the emphasis on Toranaga...that being said, will the toned down romance make it less of an impact when Mariko dies? Probably.

    • @Imhotep-Still-Juicy
      @Imhotep-Still-Juicy Před měsícem +2

      @@farmgirlrebel1333 I understand that perspective, toning down some of the romance, except that it was such a prominent part of the book and this is James Clavell's The Shogun, not one more Samurai flick during the Sengoku Jidai. I think truly, it was a love story more than a war novel and so focusing on Tokugawa/Toranaga while toning down the romance has resulted in something which feels like just one more well-made show about Ieyasu of which there are plenty. Without Blackthorne's attempted seppuku scene, there isn't this deeper level of respect by Mariko for the Anjin and what he almost did and what he would be feeling afterwards. With the amount of times Mariko creates distance between them and puts Blackthorne down, it's hard to see a believable love between the two or at least one that makes sense. I agree with your last point, with only a few episodes left, the death of Mariko might not hit the same way as in the novel. Visually the show is stunning, but I feel the dialogue has been a real let-down throughout. Thanks for your response though and all the best to you.

      @@Imhotep-Still-Juicy That is a really interesting take on the novel, being almost more of a romance set in the period. I honestly never thought of it that way. Very interesting and really a testament of Clavell's ability to cast a wide net. I personally thought the Mariko/Anjin parts of the novel weren't as well written as the rest of the novel with all the Latin language "I loooove thee" and so forth. I'll be honest though, when I first read the book back in 1980, I recall that I truly enjoyed the romance part...perhaps I have just gotten more older and cynical? probably , lol
