Something about the old CG animation in this show still looks really good in my opinion.
The show had age well the CG.
Maybe because of how they’re stylized to look like cartoony, out-of-this-world robots? I feel like CG animation tends to not age as well when it’s trying to imitate real things.
@@tearoses9940
you read my mind, sometimes style is better than realism, not for nothing things like pixel-art and low-poly models are such common visual aesthetics
This show is weird lol and childhood
Bow-wow!
Btw the remake is horrible.
I let out a huge sigh of relief at the connection to Meet the Robinsons because when I was a kid those two things he got mashed together as my memories congealed and lead me to believe that Robinsons actually got the series it deserved.
both have creative involvement by William Joyce (he was also involved with George Shrinks, Robots (2005), and Epic (2013).
@@oraw1234W oh yeah, Robots. That film's designs actually did remind me of Rolie Polie Olie

I thought Jimmy Neutron was a Meet the Robinsons TV show when I was little💀

1:38 It's called "Retro Futurism" and it's one of my favorite aesthetics.
Also last time I check Disney + for this show, it wasn't on there so thank you for bringing to my attention that they finally added it!
Also also, the Gloomius Maximus movie terrified me as a kid and I didn't even watch the whole thing until several years later.
My Life As A Teenage Robot and Meet The Robinsons are other examples of retro-futurism.

How dare you not mention Spooky Ookies redemption arc in episode 63 "Zowie, Queen of the Pumpkins" where it turns out he just couldn't get into his house without a remote
My dude couldn't get into his house one day and nobody wanted to help him, so he just went "yeah I'm gonna terrorize children now ig", that was his entire motivation and it blows my mind that nobody has given this guy their remote even once. What the heck? This is still one of my mom's favorite cartoon memories
I loved this show with my whole heart!
That "Shave and a haircut" bit was an example of IMPECCABLE timing, as my grandpa LITERALLY knocked on the door to my room in that fashion as you were explaining it lol
My brother was OBSESSED with Rolie Police Olie when he was a toddler. My mom and I can still recite full episodes by heart because of how much he watched it.
Rolie Police Olie 💀
heh
I can't believe Rolie Polie Olie was progressive with respecting peoples cultures back then. Take notes disney lmao
Modern shows can take a page from shows from the 90s and 2000s. They actually knew how to write diversity, and how characters can be friends with someone different, or certain challenges people can face without it feeling like they’re being preachy about it.

Highly recommend the Tamagotchi Anime. Literally everything is sentient from the sun to a television. Also in one episode the actual canonical sun comes down and takes a bath in the woods
I make up stories where the characters are toilets with pet litter boxes and fire hydrants and the media and everything is controlled by laundry machines.
Rolie polie olie was SUCH an iconic thing in my latinamerican childhood, their retransmisions in Christmas were something i couldn't miss.
They stopped the transmisions on disney, so I forgot about it. Until 2020, when I started learning french. So the series was a funny way of practicing while I had nothing else to do :']
Saaaaameeee, it was great! Even my baby brother watched it and he's 12, years younger than me xd the intro in Spanish is amazing, which is a win in itself

It's so weird, they clearly establish it as a world of robots in outer space, but at the same time, they keep it local to just this warm, futuristic-but-everyday neighborhood, so the world feels big and lived-in while at the same time being small and cozy. I think that's what really struck me about it.

"The emotional well-being of the television is once again overlooked" is the best out of context line in anything ever.
About the sentient appliances… I vaguely remember this one episode where the refrigerator (named Chilly) wasn’t feeling well, so they tried to help him feel better, and near the end, they found out the reason that he wasn’t feeling well was because he wasn’t plugged in. How does that even work?!
Its like when someone forgets to eat all day then woders why they feel like crap
Chilly: My goodness, what an idea, why didn't I think of that
I remember this!!!!
william joyce was really putting out bangers around this time tbh, like this and george shrinks dominated my brainspace as a child
also this show is like the precise midpoint between george shrinks and blue sky’s robots, send post
Oh my god the very mention of George Shrinks just brought back memories I had long forgotten
And he wrote Rise of the Guardians and Epic!
GEORGE SHRINKS. I forgot the name of that show!!!! I loved that as a kid
He wrote Shrek the book
I would love to see you do a deep dive on this show I used to see on tv as a kid called "Franny's feet" I think? this girl puts on other peoples shoes and travels into alternate dimensions or something crazy like that. it was nuts.
Yes! I saw this show as a kid- she’d go to different places in the world and explore and learn about the people from each place the shoe came from while helping them solve the problem of the episode.

I cannot believe that Gloomius Maximus got glanced over like that, that movie was a core part of my childhood
She didn't even mention the Happy Gear 😤
Like, she's going on about anatomy, and doesn't even mention that their emotions can be controlled by physical components, components that their doctors don't even understand how they work!

Also literally like one of the best characters. His relationship with Zoe is so wholesome it made me cry when I rewatched the movie recently while drunk
AGREED! Gloomius Maximus deserved more than that. I take time to watch the movie on occassion and I love his character. James Woods is impeccable.
@@Penguinmanereikel Also she forgot to talk about Aunt Polieanna. Which judging by how Gloomius reacted upon seeing her in Baby Bot Chase yeah I think there was definitely something going on between them. Polieanna even called him a "handsome hunk of junk"

William Joyce also wrote the books that inspired the creation everyone’s 2012 animated crush, jack frost from rise of the guardians.
iconic.
3:53 I have little to no memory of this show aside from knowing that I definitely did watch it at some point. In middle school we were assigned to write a children’s story, and the premise of mine was basically the plot described here. I had always thought it was something I came up with from seemingly nowhere, but now I think this show holds a deeper part of my subconscious than I realize
William Joyce also wrote the guardians of childhood books, dinosaur Bob and George shrinks! He was an icon of children's literature in the 90s and he's still going! His style is shiny and rounded and honestly it works so well in 3d animation, even the early stuff
The books are adapted to Robots, Meets the Robinsons, and Rise of the Guardians.

This show was my childhood. I remember watching it in the car and kept rewatching the "Storm's Coming" episode. Rolie Polie Olie FOREVER! 😎
I feel like writing a paragraph worth of praise every time I see you cover an old cartoon. just gonna comment this little bump for the algorithm.
DAMN, YOU'VE BEEN SLAYING IT THIS YEAR
Wait, this show wasn’t a fever dream?
This is resurfacing memories I didn’t even know I had
Finally! Someone looks into the lore of Rolie Poli Olie! I've always had a theory that it was set in a post apocalyptic universe, where robots took over after putting artificial intelligence into everything.
I had that same exact theory for the movie robots.
i have a really vague memory of this show as a kid and its nice to see someone covering it. if you need any suggestions on shows or movies to watch or do lore of id recommend Miss Spiders Sunny Patch Friends ( ie the show with that nightmare fuel of a spider ), Charlie and Lola ( a cute little british show that i watched so much as a kid for some reason despite me being American. the art style is also super neat and creative ), Octonauts ( a show that teaches kids about sealife ( and now apparently mammals and shit with their above series ) with a surprising amount of lore ), Viva Pinata ( a show i actually requested before that i still don't fucking know how its a kids show and Strawberry Shortcake: The Sweet Dreams Movie ( a movie i absolutely loved as a kid as i remember watching it multiple times )
I’m pretty sure Charlie and Lola aired on Playhouse Disney in America
I loved Charlie and Lola!!!
I just looked up the show, and I'm pretty sure Spiderus is why I'm afraid of spiders today.
I never heard of Viva Pinatata. I never watched Octonauts but I heard it's good. I used to love Charlie & Loa and I still kind of do, and I used o love Miss Spider Sunny Patch friends but I have no one to watch it with. Miss Spider was actually based off a book series.

this drove me to go rewatch an episoe of rolie polie olie and i was unironically enjoying it
i can't explain how, it's just lovely
I was born in 1989, so I was a bit out of this show's target age range, but CGI fascinated me as a kid and my sister watched it so I saw a few episodes back in the day. So not much nostalgia here, but I absolutely love your energy. Subbed!

And to answer you question: no, we're not.
The funny thing is that most people I heard sang: "Kill the old lady, with a Jack!" referring to the mechanical lifting device... well, it should be faster than using the insecticide at least.
Okay but this show was such a jam and I remember explaining this show to people and they didn't believe it existed. Thanks for validating my twenty year old self explaining this in college years ago.
I relate tbh when you said people didn't believe it existed, I felt that. I used to watch a lot of cartons growing up, and not the average ones that everyone knew about (besides SpongeBob). I watched a lot of obscure cartoons with creative concepts that people never heard of before. I didn't think that show was that unpopular, though. I knew it was a little underrated but I thought at least 50% of younger people or people who had kids knew about it
Hold on hold on hold on, hearing the fact that this show ended in 2004 made me realize something insane about myself
I have a nearly vivid memory of this show that probably consists of a grand total of 1-2 seconds of it, and I was born in 2003. If this show stopped airing in 2004, then this show is probably the earliest memory I have.
Out of literally anything else, *Rolie Polie Olie* is my earliest memory. What a life I live.
I remember the exact same two-three seconds of Rolie Polie Olie and I think it’s because I channel surfed a lot as a kid.
The only thing I remembered about this show was the garish yellow and the fact that the fact that there were no humans. Very...dreamlike.
Update: This show is where I first learned righty-tighty lefty-loosey. Nice!
You fr need to do Fetch with Ruff Ruffman! The lore around him and his various family members is so interesting 😅😂
Can I make a sugestion?... Imagination Movers! It was my Disney's absolute favorite as a kid! (And I still kinda have a crush on Rich-)
Omg I loved Imagination Movers when I was little! I remember thinking that the melodica was a made-up instrument created for the show because it was so weird hahaha. It's been my favorite instrument ever since then and I want to learn to play it soon!

@@sunettas9738 yeah, I must be realy powerful, my coment is even on the video for one second, lol
I was really glad to have found this show on Disney+ relatively recently. This show; P, B, and J Otter; Bear in the Big Blue House; and the Powerhouse Era of Cartoon Network were some of my earliest memories of having cable. Also to add to the whole Rollie Pollie Ollie & Robots thing is it just me or does Gloomius Maximus, the villain from the first movie, give off Madame Ratchet vibes.
I liked this show when I was younger. it’s so strange to think that it’s been over 20 years since the last time I’ve watched an episode
I've been entertaining the idea of making a cartoon for the past year or so and if that idea ever becomes a reality, no matter how distant in the future, people like this woman inspire me to make the lore as Batshit crazy as I can specifically for the sake of curious souls picking it apart and piecing it together like this. Not disturbing or anything, just with Puzzling Implications that you'd only really pick up on as an adult
My mom and I still talk about Rolie Polie Olie and sing the song. It’s burned into our brains from the hours I use to watch as a kid. I’m glad it’s not forgotten
27:56 THIS PART HAS ME CACKLING IDK WHY
Appreciate your hard work! I never thought I'd find another person non creepily interested in the lore of these amazing kid's shows. Like how can you not wonder about the lore of this world? Especially the living tools!
I was too old for Rolie Polie Olie but watched whenever possible. Between Grease, several classic 50s/early 60s films, and plenty of historical sewing projects, my parents imbued me with nostalgia that would have been weird even for their generation. The aesthetics of Rolie Polie Olie fit right in. I still sing the theme song.

4:59 That moon is not the Moon I recognize...I only recognize Luna from Bear in the Big Blue House. I never realized the guy behind Rolie Polie Olie also worked on Meet the Robinsons and Robots, but it all adds up now.... *oh yea, it's all coming together.* Robots’ world building and atmosphere rivals any other animated film out there; it feels like it was built for a TV show. So many interesting characters and concepts that the single film didn’t get to fully explore. It's a shame, really. And the Bigweld scene where he's storming into the office is what I imagine went down when Bob Iger returned as Disney CEO to replace Bob Chapek
My sister grew up with this show. Great moments of nostalgia

And it included some puppet characters from Rolie Polie Olie. Absolutely a core memory. Did anyone else here in the comments go to this mall tour? This particular one was the Mall of America which at the time was the largest mall in the country
14:50 I'm sooo glad this was brought up, no idea why but it's true, also didn't know what to call it either, the more you know ✨
To think that the creator of this show also worked on Robots and was also the author of the book that got adapted into Meet The Robinsons. MIND BLOWN. Not to mention that whole plot you mentioned of Pappy having a hard time finding the right parts for his model reminded me that in Robots outmodes as they are called are having a hard time finding replacement parts due to villains’s plot involving using broken down robots to make “upgrades” and it’s no wonder why that is so similar considering the fact that the creator of this show also worked on Robots as you said yourself. So it’s no coincidence that they have those very similar ideas as it seems that he introduced that whole idea involving finding replacement parts and the makers of the movie ran with his idea but took it in a darker direction.

God this was one of like, the main shows I watched as a kid. So glad to hear someone talk about it after all these years.
I just wanna add, it also aired re-runs on Treehouse (A Canadian kid's channel) when I was a kid. Which, I was born in 2003 and it aired for a good while. I can't quite remember when it stopped airing but I forget about it completely until people mention it lmao.
If you're open to suggestions on future lore videos, there are some interesting shows that aired I think only in Canada that I watched as a kid. George Shrinks is an interesting one that I don't remember too much about, aside from the shoe car that can turn into a helicopter. Might add to this when I remember more and/or find a list I made a few years back of all the shows I used to watch, ~55% of which was Canada exclusive due to the CanCon laws.
I'm an American and I'm so jealous you Canadians have all the good tv shows. All we get is crap shows like Loud House and iCarly, but you guys still got stuff like Scaredy Squirrel and Rolie Polie Olie. I'm the type of person who's really into kids cartoons, I'm jealous! You guys also still got the actual kids channels, too! YTV and Treehouse! Us Americans gotta go online or get all these expensive streaming services for actual good kids shows. We used to have two channels like that, one was called "Sprout" and the other was called "Qubo" but they got rid of them. Literally the only good kids shows I saw on American tv lately were My Little Pony, SpongeBob, and Pocoyo. Rolie Polie Olie used to play on Playhouse Disney/Disney Junior for us, but Sprout and Qubo had a lot of shows that came from Canada, UK, and other countries. George Shrinks actually played on PBS kids from what i know, but maybe Qubo could have picked it up later on. Qubo did that with Marvin the Tap-Dancing Horse and Timothy goes to School.
Also, I was born a year before you! ^u^ We could have the same childhood favorites, huh?
@@jocelynecupcake We could! The funny thing about that though is that I was often jealous of americans as a kid. When i'd be at my Grandmother's house, I'd go on the PBS Kids website (We didn't have internet ourselves until 2015) and play games. This one time, I discovered there was a videos section so I click on it and discover all my favourite PBS Kids shows were on it, since we did get PBS Kids through Satellite. I was so disappointed to discover that it was region blocked and that I couldn't watch Wild Kratts and Wordgirl while my grandpa was watching the news on the tv. We actually also had BBC Kids available to us through Satellite so I was exposed to plenty of british shows like Art Attack.
As far as I remember though, my favourite cartoons were Martha Speaks, Wordgirl, My Little Pony, George Shrinks, Rolie Polie Olie, Wild Kratts, and the classic looney tunes since we had Teletoon Retro and every saturday morning I'd be up early to watch The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show reruns.
SHUT THE FRONT DOOR RIGHT NOW! I've been on the search for this show since my childhood, and I swear to god no amount of searching ever yielded what I wanted, I was convinced that it might as well be lost media. Thank you so very much!
