In the world of road running, finding the right shoe that marries comfort, durability, and performance is always a challenge. Maybe that challenge is solved today! The On Cloudeclipse, a relatively new entrant in the road running scene, has garnered attention for its unique features, especially in the midsole ride. In this review, we dissect the Cloudeclipse, focusing on its upper, midsole, and outsole features, culminating in an overall Shoedio score of 7.4 out of 10.
    Upper
The Cloudeclipse boasts an upper design with a blend of breathability and support thanks to a nice full-knitted gusset. The breathable mesh provides solid ventilation, a crucial aspect for long runs, especially in warmer conditions. The fit is snug yet comfortable, thanks to the adaptive materials that conform to the foot's shape. The full gusset that marries the tongue of the shoe with the interior walls of the upper improves the overall lockdown experience in this road running shoe. No slipping in the heel pocket throughout all of the testing.
Be aware, that some runners might find the upper a bit restrictive, particularly in the toe box area. Let’s just say a snug feel is present, which I prefer but some may not. For those accustomed to a roomier fit, this could be a point of contention when you’re out there racking up miles. The durability of the upper is on point, high quality materials are being used in the overall construction of the upper, which is especially noticeable through the eyelet chain.
    Midsole
On’s signature, CloudTec technology is at the heart of the Cloudeclipse's midsole. This technology offers a cushioned ride that absorbs impact efficiently, translating to comfort during long runs and a smooth transition through the gait cycle. The midsole's construction strikes a commendable balance between durability and responsiveness, though it leans slightly more towards the former with a Shore C Durometer score of 45-47. That is a firmer score for the midsole, but works so well when combined with the CloudTec engineering. This CloudTec Phase technology uses cutting-edge shoe engineering. The Cloud pods (holes in the midsole) effortlessly collapse like dominos when your foot lands for a softer, smoother transfer from heel to toe. The shoe excels in providing a stable platform, making it a good option for runners who value underfoot security and support. Don’t forget, On places a Speedboard plastic layer in the midsole, enhancing the ride with a snappy midsole with high levels of energy returns. Nevertheless, runners seeking a more pronounced energy return or bounce might find the Cloudeclipse a bit lacking in this aspect.
    Outsole
Durability meets function in the Cloudeclipse's outsole. The rubber material used is both robust and flexible, offering good traction on various urban terrains. The grip performance is reliable, even on slightly wet surfaces, which is a significant plus for those running in variable weather conditions. The rubber placement is done well and is not a cheap rubber. The rubber’s thickness is 1-2 mm and will add many miles to the shoes long-term performance. Also, the outsole does not show any signs of wear after extensive testing, which is something potential buyers should get hyped for.
Would I Buy This Shoe Again?
The On Cloudeclipse road running shoe stands out for its impressive balance of comfort, support, and durability. Its upper, though slightly restrictive for some in the toebox, offers great breathability and overall fit. The midsole delivers a cushioned, stable ride, albeit with less energy return when compared to some other On running shoes. The outsole's durability and traction are on point for this first generation On road running shoe.

I have trained in the On Cloud Surfer in 2023. I really like them. I even bought a second pair. 285 miles on the first pair. I will seriously consider the Eclipse. The best part of the Surfer was the fact that On took out the speed board.

QD: I have done some training in the On Cloud Flow in the past 12 months. Its better on tracks than on roads because large rocks love to get caught in their open groves. But it's a nice running shoe. But I'd rather run in saucony for cheaper. Plus my race shoes are the Saucony Endorphin Pros, so saucony has a training version of that.

I've been running in the Monster for about 2 years now and clocked about 500 miles. For the longest time I rarely used it because it felt too firm. But after 200 miles or so it softened up a bit and now it's my favourite easy day shoe.

I ran in both the cloudmonster and cloudsurfer in 2023. Both of these shoes were amazing out of the box. Unfortunately they both wore down much faster than other shoes and I struggled to get 350 miles out of them. If I had an unlimited supply of any shoe for free I would definitely choose ON but with the high prices and low mileage limit I couldn’t justify buying any more.

    • @KoIhara
      @KoIhara Před 7 měsíci

Was it those diagonal pillar-like sections in the midsole that wore out? I’ve watched some other videos like 3:50 showing the midsole getting skewed, was curious how the midsole material holds up.

The On Cloud Surfer has become my go-to trainer. Very versatile. Daily comfort, I've tempoed in it, I've 5k'd in it, I've even tracked in it. My only concern is longevity. I have around 150 miles in it so far and it's hanging in there, but I don't see this going beyond 350 miles.

The Cloudsurfer was probably my favorite daily trainer last year. Only problem is they go a little flat after 150-200 miles. They also squeak when exposed to water. I went through 2 pairs and am on my third. Hopefully the Eclipse holds its spring longer. I've been more impressed recently with my Asics Superblast...feel stays the same for a long time!

I’ve been running in(and reviewing) the CloudEclipse and the CloudSurfer 7, both is which use that CloudPhase tech. I think the high durometer mixed with CloudPhase allows On to have a soft shoe that is also durable, which you can’t say about soft-riding shoes. They got it right with this tech. I’ll be paying attention to any On shoe that comes out with this application of Cloud tech.

I'm suspicious of the durability of the foam as those holes flex closed and open. Seems like that repetitive movement is a much different demand on a small area of material than the normal compression and rebound of a stack of foam. More like bending a piece of plastic back and forth until it gives out. But if On has a foam formula that can handle several hundreds of miles without any noticeable loss of function, that's great.
