  • The Cloudeclipse looks like a double tall, max cushion version of the successful Cloudsurfer. And in many ways, it is just that. But there’s more to the On Cloudeclipse than meets the eye. And it’s more versatile than it looks.

    Had this shoe for about a month now and the word that comes to my mind is smooth. The ride is very very smooth. It's also On's softest shoe to date. The initial step in doesn't feel much different than the monster but on the run you can feel way more cushion in that forefoot area in the eclipse. It also seems to get softer and softer after every run (weight: 160 lbs). I've been enjoying it a lot. Great review as always from one Mike to the other.

      @@rbaude27the problem is that they’re not really even that “premium” in that the performance, material quality, nor durability are above their peers. More of a market position or marketing focus, which I guess does work with their “Swiss engineering” tagline they’ve promoted.

Actually returned these 3 times for a new pair an eventually switched to the monsters which ive had no problems with(maybe because the foam holes collapse less). • @OlieSimpson
    @OlieSimpson Před 7 měsíci

    I'm looking for some advice on building out a proper shoe rotation, and this seems to be the place to be! Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
    Easy / Recovery / Zone 2 Runs - 5:00-6:00 min per KM pace - 1 to 2 hour runs
    Currently have the ASICS Gel Nimbus 25 which seem okay for this purpose but would like recommendations for a soft/max cushion shoe to cover the easy, plodding along miles. Must have a very durable outsole as I do roughly 200km per month for this type of run so don't want to be replacing it all the time.
    Tempo / Interval / Threshold / Hill Repeats - Non-plated
    Currently use the Puma Nitro Velocity 2 for this but will need to be replaced soon as they have over 700km's on them. Looking for a light, responsive, good energy return, non-plated shoe for the faster runs, again with a durable outsole if possible.
    Tempo / Interval / Threshold / Hill Repeats - Plated
    As above but with a plate to help get closer to simulating race-day pace - not an all-out race shoe so there's still a bit of time to gain (probably through a placebo effect) on race-day.
    Long-run - 25km+ inc. Half Marathon (4:00 min per KM) / Marathon Efforts (4:45 min per KM)
    Something comfortable for the longer distance training runs that inc. HM/M race-day efforts. Again, a durable outsole would be nice here due to the distance the shoe will be covering. Potentially plated to provide some additional support and energy but not an all-out race shoe
    5km / 10km / HM Race
    Currently using the Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 2 and love it for these distances. Any other recommendations?
    Marathon / 50km Ultra Race
    Really like the sound of the Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 3 for this category, but any other recommendations would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

    I'm not so sure about them after the 1st run. Bought them to rotate with the Mach 5's which i absolutely love. The upper on this is super comfy and I had a great lockdown. Even though they're not super light, they didn't feel heavy or clunky like the Mach X. They definitely push you a bit forward, don't feel like a slow run shoe. What i'm torn about is the feel of the midsole. It has a lot of stack, but i feel the pods just collapse and it doesn't feel plush. Also the speed board on the bottom is just weird. It should have been deeper under the foam. You can feel every little rock if you step on it. I'll probably return them and get some cheap Clifton 9's for the easy miles.
    The standard price here in Europe is 190 but got them on black friday sale for 150. Still on the expensive side, i don't think it's worth it.
    I think On is getting closer to a proper running shoe, but the might need to create a 2 layer system with a softer foam layer on top and could pods on the bottom.

I've mostly relegated all my max cushion shoes (Invincibles, Bondi, Nimbuses, Triumphs, More V4) to daily walkers since they're all too heavy and clunky. They take all the fun out of running. All that said, the Cloudsurfer 7 is one of my favorite shoes of this year. I love the fast and firm Helion foam though I wonder how much better it could be if On were ever to get serious and use supercritical nitrogen-injected foams. Sad to say this but after running 30km in them so far (in rain) the shoes are already starting to squeak. The foam is getting softer at the point making the pods collapsing on itself easier causing the foam to rub against each other. The protective layer that is in the pods probably got washed off by the rain (so maybe adding some oil/powder will reduce the squeak?). Really disappointed they didn't resolve the biggest issue the Cloudsurfer had.
    The shoe feels lighter than it actually is and for me fit true to size. The foam sits in between the softness of the Cloudsurfer and firmness of the Boston 12.
    I'm 80kg/176lbs so lighter runners will most likely experience this issue much later than I did. I really like the shoes overall, but I would've liked it a little bit more if the tongue had just a tiny bit more padding.

SC Trainer one could argue the plate and foam setup, plus the improved weight savings from the previous iteration, somewhat helps sustain its price point. With the Cloud Eclipse, what makes it worth charging $20-30 (and more if we're including last season's shoes now on discount) than the Triumph, Nimbus, Magnify Nitro, etc.? Is there something in the middle that can give me the advantage of the Alpha but is a little safer on tired legs? super foam is their term, not mine. I haven't bothered to verify whether there is a supercritical process involved, but I'll follow up when I see On at TRE next week. in the meantime, I think the helion in the cloudsurfer and cloudeclipse feels quite different than the helion in other On shoes, such as a cloudstratus or cloudmonster.

    • @bbnd5476
      @bbnd5476 Před 7 měsíci

      @kofuzi would be great to have a follow up. We rely on reviewers to filter the marketing materials for us, not amplify them. If ON is using EVA, then we shouldn't call it a superfoam. Supercritical processing or OBC additives help, but it wont close the gap on energy return nor longevity relative to TPE/PEBA. I certainly wouldn't want to spend 190€ on a superfoam shoe only to find out it's dead after 250km because it's actually just EVA.
