Knott's Bear-y Tales - The ORIGINAL 1975 Adventure!

  • The original Rolly Crump dark ride that started it all! Keep in mind that the footage here doesn't do the original ride justice and that this footage shows the ride having a bit of disrepair and care in its final days. Video cameras were unable to capture the magic of this ride with its use of Blacklight, Incandescent, and other special effects found throughout the ride.
Knott's Bear-y Tales focused on the Bear-y Family (composed of Boysen, Girlsen, Razz, Flapper, and Elder) making Boysenberry jams, jellies, and pies for the Country Fair to win the Blue Ribbon Prize. Alongside their friends who even help out by making Pickled Eggs and even Meats as well! However, there is a villain on the Bear-y Family's tail named Crafty Coyote who just wants to steal all the Boysenberry goodies for himself.
The Journey of the ride took guests from the Factory in the beginning to a wild number of adventures that many will see on their way to the Country Fair. The zany Frog Forest complete with the namesake critters hopping around their toadstool houses, lily pads, and even holding tryouts for the jumping contest as part of the Fair. The mystical Fortune Teller's Camp which saw riders having their fortune read in multiple ways by Theda Bear, Zaz Owl, Sarah Skunk, Thelma Frog, and Wanda Fox. The mysterious Thunder Cave filled with lighting and home to fuzzy glow in the dark spiders within this dank area. The very Weird Woods that is home to a lot of bizarre creatures, scary trees and even the antagonist of the ride, Crafty Coyote. Then guests enter the big finale of the ride known as the Country Fair. Where they see all the characters from every part of their journey show up and where the Bear-y Family wins their Blue Ribbon Prize for all their accomplishments.
Knott's Bear-y Tales lasted from 1975 to 1986. The ride would be replaced by Kingdom of The Dinosaurs in 1987 until that too closed in 2004. Afterwards, the space was gutted and turned into the shooter dark rides that exists now. Our hearts will forever be with the original Knott's Bear-y Tales and Kingdom of The Dinosaurs. The true Dark Rides of the space.

I wish we had more videos on the classic ride. There is so much not done justice of the original.
We're also happy how well the new ride turned out! We love that it did its own thing and kept the style of Rolly Crump alive

God bless this person for taking this video! This brought back so many memories! I LOVED this ride! This was a must when going to Knott's. We wouldn't leave the park without going on this ride. The video wasn't so great, but the sounds and music brought me back!

Yep! They made the right choice to record it! Thank goodness for that! Also, if you're interested we have the soundtrack to the ride on this channel!
That and they have brought the ride back. But it is a modern interpretation and homage to the classic ride.

This was by far one of the most memorable rides/experiences from my childhood at Knotts (The Mystery House and the Soap Box Races were the other, now gone, rides). I was so upset when I finally went back with my nephew and all of them were gone. :/

Yes, it's too bad we didn't have low light cameras back then. But even hearing the sounds again and catching a few glimpses of portions of the ride were great. But yeah, for someone who has never been on it, it doesn't do it justice and they probably wonder why we rave over it!

Exactly! Its a ride that is difficult to capture all the praises of. When someone looks at it from video, it just comes off as not being great to the viewer. We still cross fingers that someday good footage exists out there of the ride...

So crazy how the camera used to film this back then was probably the size of a small suitcase, and now a camera of the highest quality fits comfortably in one hand and in our pockets. I still have memories of an uncle who would always bring his big shoulder-mounted home video camera to family stuff as a kid. Man, that technology improved crazy fast!

Aww, I miss this original ride. Brings back fun memories with my little brother then.. I'm so glad this was recorded! Way before we had our phones to now record EVERYTHING! Lol...I just saw a video of the new version of this ride, completely different but when I can, I hope to take my 4 niece's (sisters) to KBF, they're under 11 but just moved back to California. They heard so much about KBF from me and my sister, and they really want to go there and to Camp Snoopy for my baby niece who two. I haven't been to KBF since 2000! 😬.. Time to go back! ❤

Probably their biggest mistake right there. And while I do enjoy the latest ride, I wish they could have just done a modern take on this ride and made it a better version of the 1975 ride. It could have been a ride better than the original if they played their cards right.
That and it could have shown everyone why we loved this ride in the first place. Too bad the videos and such do not do the original justice. That and you got the jaded folks who are terrified of things like It's A Small World and whatnot thinking this ride was some Horror experience. But hey they're a small group...

Knott’s just doesn’t want to invest in animatronics. Screens/projections are much easier to fix from a maintenance standpoint.

Animatronics in the 70s were so scary. Splash Mountain creeps me out, and I would not have enjoyed this bear ride either. I just went on the current version of this ride for the first time today, and it was pretty fun. I wish I grew up going to Knott's Berry Farm, but I have only been there twice in my life. Thunder Cave gives me a Scooby-Doo -ish vibe, probably because of how it used the same "Castle Thunder" sound effect many older Scooby-Doo/Hanna-Barbera cartoons used.
