- For most of their adult lives, Lucille and Wendell (“Bud”) Hurlbut kept a daily journal of their professional and personal experiences. With the generous support of the Orange County Archives, these diaries have been unsealed for the first time in many decades to reveal the untold story behind Knott’s most famous attraction.

A 43 minute long video? Everyone, we won the lottery!
😄
Right?!?!
You ain't kidding!!! I hope you're doing well as we can't yet enjoy our beloved themed attractions. I hope to visit DL & Knott's in the fall of 2020. We gotta salvage this year!
Such Mastery! I absolutely LOVE and enjoy each and every video Expedition Theme Park produces. Bravo!
New Expedition Theme Park and Defunctland on the same day? Extremely amazing!
It must be Christmas!
@@ExpeditionThemePark You follow Defunctland too?
Deshawn Edwards I think they all follow each other. The theme park internet community is pretty tight.
@@ExpeditionThemePark At this point it could be December for all I know. lol
I thought it was at least Smarch
I worked on the Log ride. Also worked on it as a "Monster" for scary farm for a year. I used to go exploring in it all the time. it's really an interesting place if you get inside the mountain
Your narration and accent is so nice to the ears. No forced jokes, no lame voices. Just the facts and photos. Excellent and informative!
Nick Pompeii no forced jokes, yet still making jokes, which is something a lot of people have trouble doing, it’s always super informative and interesting
@@Foxy02016 also no forced music in the background
He makes pretty nice jokes. Like the ones he makes of thirteen
"The efforts would be for knott." He says it more than once. We see what you did there.
Americans always mesmerised by a British accent, other nations - “He’s probably drunk”.
Ohh man. My grandmother lived across the street from Knott's and we moved there in 1970. Mrs Knott fell in love with my sister and often rocked her in the chair out in front of one of the stores in Ghost Town. We went to Knott's nearly every day. She loved feeding the ducks at the pond at the merry go round. Her favorite was a rooster and a duck who were best friends.
We rode the Log Ride all the time, what memories this brought back! To this day , i will only eat boysenberry Jam that i learned to love at Knott's.
Best berry ever!
I loved jungle Island and played there often. I'm so glad the Log Ride still exists. My uncle used to play the bank robber on the stage coach. It felt like it was our backyard. My sister's friends had a family band who sang at the John Wayne theater. Man oh man i wish i could go back just for one day.
43 minute video?
*Tucks self in, soda and snacks at the ready*
"This gon' be guuuud."
Enjoy!
was that a sebastian maniscalco reference?
Thank you for the consistent Knott’s content. It’s always the forgotten or ignored SoCal theme park, but I love it.
Agreed so many memories from that park
I still miss Camp Snoopy even
Having lived 3 blocks from Knott's I watched the Log ride take form. You have presented the best( my opinion) history of this ride. congratulations
From someone who spent his child hood at Knott’s. I say a Heartfelt Thank You.
I'm a coaster junkie but whenever I go to Knott's I always ride the log ride. It's a classic.
Excellent video on the Log Ride!
Also, when you do cover Bear-y Tales in the future. Feel free to contact the authors of Knott's Preserved and I. We have things that'll help out with that episode...
Please tell me I am not the only one who got a shot of nostalgia from the sounds of the slide carousel/film advance and beep on the tape? That was the sound on my school experience right through high school.
I honestly hope one of the higher ups from Cedar fair watches this video. Knott's has really been slacking with their dark rides over the past couple of decades. It would be nice to get a brand new dark ride with animatronics. Either a Snoopy/Peanuts theme or a ride similar to Pirates of the Caribbean but retheme with Cowboys and the old west!
Oooh maybe one like the fur trapper suggestion. That was quite the cutthroat market. Quite literally
I loved going to Knott's. The alligator farm first ,the mystery house and chicken dinners ,plus boysenberry jam. When I got older the cars were our pot smoking ride. Back then you got in for free and bought ride tickets at a booth. And no roller coasters.
Thank you for this. This ride was a huge part of my childhood memories. I've been on it probably hundreds, if not close to a thousand times growing up. There was only ever one time I couldn't ride it due to a breakdown, otherwise I'd be on it as many times as my parents or friends would tolerate. I always knew it was special, but I didn't realize as a kid that it was this special. This helped revive a lot of old memories about the park as a whole. Between the local options, Disney and Knott's, I was always a Knott's Berry Farm kid.
Me too. Wow I rode it all the time too. This was a magical trip back in time.
The Orange County Archives helped out? Wow that was kind of them to do that. Love log flume rides, it was cool learning more about this one. My favorite of the log flumes is Splash Mountain
Splash Mountain is my favorite too. I rode the one at Disney World. But one reason I love it is Song of the South is one of my favorite Disney movies and it's so great to see the stories featured. Funny. I can't ride a roller coaster for love or money despite the desire but I could ride log flumes.
Everyone's got a laughin' place and mine is Splash Mountain!
Log flumes are really underrated rides. My favorite will always be Daredevil Falls at Dollywood.
To quote Adam the woo:” Vloggin on a log!”
In 1994 to 1995 I worked at Knotts Berry Farm and was lucky to meet Steve and Russell Knott. I left to work at Castle Amusement Park in 1996 and would see Bud, his wife and dog every weekend in the park. Bud was a great guy to work for. Always checking in on his favorite rides. The antique car ride, which was at Knotts, his miniature train ride which ran around the lagoon at Knotts and his other larger train which resembled the locomotives of the Calico mine trains.
All these rides were great childhood memories as I rode them when they were at Knotts and Castle Park. Then as I got older operating the rides that Mr. Hurlbut had the most pride in. It was an awesome experience.
Not only that but Mr. Hurlbut lived across the street from my grandparents in Buena Park. Very kind gentlemen.
For my seventh birthday..my uncle allowed me to ride along with him on his early morning pre.dawn log maintenance check .. he was a security mechanic for the Knott's log ride. I was privelledged to ride every log with him while he checked for maintnc. Safety. Quite a special and unique birthday present. I am 67 yrs old now . My father was also good friends with bill higdon of the stage coach attraction.
By far the best representation of Knott’s Berry Farm as a park. Truly an incredible ride. Thank you for such a great in-depth history of the ride! ❤️
Thank you for watching
I like how he was too broke to do everything he wanted to do, I feel that made what he did do that much more.
This is my favorite ride at Knott's! I love when the team member asks if you would like to stay on the ride and go again! Yes, please. Usually they let you do that when there's not a lot of people waiting in line. I love the drop in the dark and the whole "sit down sit down" thing. lol
Finally some recognition for this awesome park! I feel like everyone forgets it’s here, but I grew up going there!
When this lockdown is over and the theme parks are able to open up again and nobody will worry about the virus again, I intend to go back to Knott's. I haven't been there in years, and every time I see one of your videos about their history, it reminds me of how good this place is (and how affordable it is compared to some other parks I know).
Yesss, I’ve been waiting for this!
Hope you enjoy!
Timber Mountain Log ride actually has a sister ride: Paul Bunyan’s Log Chute at Knotts camp snoopy, now known as Nickelodeon Universe at Mall Of America.
Holy shit, really?
I've been on that one
it's a good ride
I loved Paul Bunyan's log cute. The whole park has since been re-themed :(
@@annerison the log chute hasn’t changed in the retheme besides some new lights and a new bear animatronic, its still just as good as ever.
I hope parks start making new log flumes. One of my favorite types of rides.
Long live Timber Mountain Log Ride! And let it live for all generations.
A 43 minute long video and a cup of tea is exactly what I needed. Thank you!
No matter how much I think I know about Knott's, I *always* learn something new from an Expedition Theme Park episode. Thank you!
I can't believe Tony Baxter was the boy in that picture! Amazing!
Right!
@@ExpeditionThemePark I screen capped that to show to Offhand Disney on his Twitter.
I know that it was someone else who told the imagineers to come up with a log flume, but I like to think that we now know why Tony developed Splash Mountain, the inspiration goes all the way back to his childhood!
Wow!!! What a wonderful video ☺️🤠😄 you took so much time to compile all that info, photos and videos!!!
(I watched it in two sittings.)
It was so informative, and I NEVER knew the back story behind it! I grew up riding it my whole life, and now when I go back again in the future, it will mean so much more to me than just a ride!
I hope they keep it forever, as that and the mine car ride are my two favorites!!!
Every time I see a log flume video, I'm reminded that my local park removed ours and replaced it with nothing. Damn you six flags!
Mine got a euro fighter.
I live near castle park the park that bud made
I live by Kennywood and they removed our Logjammer for the Steel Curtain. Which is nice, but now all they have is the Pittsburgh plunge and the rapids which was closed all last season. I wish they would have kept it, and just built the steel curtain somewhere else. It was so fun and a classic which will be missed by many. Now they’re also taking away 4 other classics. Hopefully they replace them with something better. The public opinion so far hasn’t been good. We’ll see I guess...🤷🏻♂️🙅♂️🤷🏻♂️
In my opinion the best Log ride in any park
Yep!
Agree especially when it tells us to sit down lol and you hear all the animals hooting lol and it sounds so musical lol 😂
40:11 Every time I hear someone mention about Astroworld in Houston, Tx, I start to cry.
Holy kittens!! You used some of my footage! I feel honored! You rock, Sam!
Great Video 😊 Couldn't imagine Knott's without the log ride 🥰
When I heard the voice of the truant "kid" I knew it was the great Tony Baxter. I had the honor of speaking with him many times along with both Dana & Ed Morgan. This by far is the definitive in ALL log flumes. I'm from Houston, TX. We had the Bambo Shoot, then there is the 1st @ Six Flags Over Texas* I can't remember If the 1964 Worlds Fair opened before or after. I LOVVVVEEE!!! Knott's ever since I was a little boy. I was so happy for the re-furb of it & Calico Mine Train. This is what makes these parks so "stand OUT!" research & unrelenting attention to detail. Passion, is a another word that is the enduring hallmark of why these attractions stand the TEST of time. Thank YOU Expedition!!!!" for brightening my day!!!
One thing I think should’ve gotten an honorable mention... The famous “Sit down!” Sensor and loudspeaker! 😆
A 43 minute video? This is going to be awesome!! *Tells everyone that this will be our movie for movie night*
Thank so much for sharing the history of America's most historic log flume, while also keying us into the history of the log flume itself! Anyway, I thought I'd make a couple suggestions for future episodes of Expedition Theme Park:
-Ghost Town & Calico Railroad, Knott's Berry Farm
-Tweetsie Railroad's Ghost Train Halloween Festival (I'd like to see a more in depth history of the event itself)
-Dollywood
-Land Of Oz
I've designed and built many log flumes in my career, but your excellent video taught me stuff even I didn't know. The Knott's flume is a lovely ride, and one of the first I ever rode. Thank you for all the brilliant research you do in producing your videos.
Mystery lodge next please!
I could give him the patent number on that attraction
Yes that was my fav
I grew up in Vegas and we went to Knotts Berry Farm all the time as a kid. The log ride is such a memory! It was my absolute favorite!
Wow! Tons of never before seen footage. Incredible work on this!
Great research as always, Sam. I really miss Jungle Island, that was my favorite place in the world when I was a little kid.
Me too!
Why do you not have 1million subscribers yet??? Every video you put out is incredible.
0:38 "...a vast assortment of major and minor attractions." Or is it "Major and *miner* attractions?" Pun intended?
I "grew up" here . My Son went to Walter Knott School right on the grounds ! Hearing the Locomotive and the screaming visitors were certainly a distraction !
I worked there during the now defunct Gypsy Camp and was the first Haunter in the mill during the First Knotts Halloween Haunt ( pre Knotts Scary Farm ) .. I was stationed at the top of the first ramp , just inside the sawmill , above , on a catwalk . I had been armed with hundreds of " Kreepy Krawlers " and rolls of kite string to dangle the creepies in riders faces or tap the last rider in the back . Furthermore , a tethered , wired box with 6 buttons that , when pressed , gave off terrible screams , Cackling and Howling .. WHAT A BLAST , I couldn't get to work fast enough ! Later each evening , the riders would realize I was up there and returned my favors with squirts from water pistols ... I'm in my sixtys now but would return in a heartbeat if given that chance .
This is honestly one of the best birthday present I’ve gotten, thank you!
This is my favorite ride at Knott’s Berry Farm. I haven’t been to the park in a long time, but once as a kid, my sister, cousins, and I went on this ride 13 times in one day. Fun fact: if you raise your arms during the pitch black drop, a recorded voice says “Sit down! Sit down!” Thanks for the video.
God I'm so happy this is so long, perfect thing to watch while eating a meal!! great video!
My dad loved Knott's Berry Farm. He went to art school in LA in the 50s, after having served in WWII. So that was back in the day when the attractions were starting to be built. That log ride was his favorite. ❤️
Can you find out the history of the small little mining camp that ghost rider replaced at knotts
He actually talks about it in his calico mine ride video
These videos make me really want to visit America. As someone who had lived in England for all my life, and been to all the major parks here, it makes me want to go to somewhere interesting.
Enjoyed your thorough history on Timber Mountain and The Farm. Learned new facts about the ride's history & the family I once had the privilege of working under. My time on the Farm gave me a sense of being a little part of Socal history in my home state I love so much.
Awesome job. Loved it keep up the great work.
This is not only one of the most informative channels on you tube it's also better than anything I've seen on TV.
Great video. So much nostalgia seeing the log ride.
You have my attention anytime you do a video on Knott’s. It’s my home park. Thanks for hitting on a park so few theme park Tubers touch on
Thanks for watching!
The one of most important part of Knott's history.
Honestly this had to be my favorite episode. So much history in this ride! Hope it lasts for so many more decades!
43 minute video?? We are blessed this day
THE SHADE AT THE YETI!!! 😂❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You are giving me life on a cloudy day, thank you ❤
THE best log flume ride ever built. Not just in theming, but the physical ride itself. So many roll along the bottom or constantly bang back and forth. They truly mastered the right amount of water and flow in all the right places. I rode it 18 times in one day once. I can never get enough! I live on the east coast now and I miss it! I'm so glad Knott's continues to preserve this treasure! Thank you for this wonderful, in-depth history of a masterpiece in the theme park industry.
I miss Knott's...thank you for making this quarantine easier! And thanks for continuing to be one of the highest quality channels CZcams has ever seen.
Did you hear that they're going to start offering curbside Chicken Dinners? I think it starts this week- you'll be able to drive right next to the park gates for that fried deliciousness!
@@GTMGUNN I can't wait!
I've been waiting for this video, for a long time.
These videos are always great! Thank you!
One of My favorite rides at Knotts.
Thank you for producing this. I will be honest, I have been looking forward to this upload for the last 6 months and it exceeded my expectations, thank you for giving us something to watch during this pandemic
You tell a great story. You're a master of the craft.
Yes, one of my favorite rides ever, right across from the Calico Mine Train! It's the only ride photo I've ever purchased; the rest of my family is smiling and holding up their arms while I have a serious scowl on my face that reads, "I. AM. F-CKING. READY." Knott's has such a unique and lengthy history; it's my favorite park.
One time, my younger 6-year-old cousin drank a virgin boysenberry sangria before we left the park and got sick on the ride home. Afterwards, she'd pronounce it "poisonberry" and insistently claim that's how one properly said it, even when she started eating it again. When I asked her why she'd eat something called a poisonberry churro she'd retort angrily, "It's _just_ a name, DUHH!"
That was wonderful! Thank you for bringing back so many wonderful memories...
I have so many amazing memories from this log flume! Thank you for the history and for bringing back memories!
I lived very close to Knotts as a kid and loved the log ride.
I loved learning about theme park history
Amazing job on this video! Thank you. Love this ride and the history behind it is awesome.
Awesome job, Sam! Really fantastic video!
Outstanding video! Really great job of giving so much of the backstory and history of this attraction. Even all these years later it is still one of the best log rides, if not the best, ones out there.
Thanks for sharing the history of this attraction! I love seeing some of the old park maps and history of what attractions were around before I was born. Very cool!!!
Wow! Amazing job on this one! Thank you for all your hard work. Love this ride.
Awesome video! Learned a lot about the history of the ride and family that I never knew before, thanks for putting that together!
Another great video!!!! Killin it my dude
Wonderful documentary! Thank you!
its fun learning the history of a place i visited so frequently in my youth
I am excited to watch this video. I know it’s going to bring back so many great memories. When I was growing up, our family lived 15 months from Knott’s. We would go to 5-6 times a year. Once I got my drivers license, my brother and I went almost every weekend - during the school year. In summer, 3-5 times a week. Every time we would ride the Log Ride - we would “argue” (not seriously) about who got to sit in front first. We never rode it just once. The front rider got the most water splash. I’m now 56 years old and live in Idaho. Sadly, my amusement park ride buddy (and best friend) passed away too soon in 2001. I know he would love to be sitting here with me and saying “Remember that time at Knott’s when we …..”
Man I always find myself coming back to this video. This is one of my favorite rides of all time and this video is just such a good break down of how it was made and it’s history. Thank you for making this incredible short documentary!
Thank you!!!! very good job well done! Knotts ghost town is one of my favorites. Your time well spent!
Total gold, as always.
This ride was a lot of fun, it’s the thing I remember most from this park
Great video, as always!
Thank you for your excellent work!
As ALWAYS
Excellent job.
Dude this was your best episode yet. Great work
Fantastic video on a fantastic ride. I live somewhat nearby and I’ve ridden this countless times, and never tire of it. It has special magic and charm that never seems to fade. BRILLIANT video, lovingly done. Thanks for sharing!!
We grew up there, sitting on Mrs Knott's lap in Ghost Town. Sitting in her rocking chair nearly every single afternoon.
It's the best memories ever. My grandmother fed the ducks on the pond by the merry go round and wrote a true story about two ducks that got published in the paper. She lived across the street in Buena Park.
I still won't eat any preserves but boysenberry.
Great video again, a great piece of history, nice work
Thanks for such a great video. First time I went to Knott's was in the 80's and my favorites were the log ride and the Calico Mine ride. They made such an impression on me. To this day I love anything that's rusty and historical. It's nice to know that the company worked so hard in planning and building them.
Thank you so much for this video!!!!! There is so much interesting history about Knott's, but it doesn't get the love it deserves. Videos like this about Knott's are few and far between, thank you for all the work and effort.
Great video ! I always love a good log flume. Such a long and detailed video about this ride and the history of all log flumes
Well done!
I grew up 2 miles from KBF and rode this in 1970, within the first year of operation. I still have an old Polaroid of the visit.
Living in Cypress, then later Stanton, all next to Buena Park and Anaheim. So as you enter working age it was either KBF, Disneyland, or McDonalds. I started at McDs for a year then DL for 8.5 years.
I miss the old KBF. The Haunted Shack, the original location of pan for gold, the Model T cars out on the far side of the parking lot, the original Scary Farm in the early 70s were fantastic, when the Roaring 20s area was first built, the Corkscrew, the Parachute Drop, Knotts Berry Tales. *sigh*
All the farmland is gone now. I remember awaking to the smell of strawberrys and fertilizer as a kid. It’s all concrete and strip malls now.
What did you do at DL?
