    You can absolutely use a foil quill with the explore one machines that have one adapter. all you need to do is remove the pen or blade and put the quill nib in without an adapter. Fits perfectly

  • @bujgirl
    @bujgirl Před 5 lety +1

    Thanks for sharing this video. It certainly was interesting to see the different material types the Foil Quill works on. One question - in your experiments you only used the medium tip. What if you used the fine tip for the softer materials (felt and leather)?

    • @SugarShineDesigns
      @SugarShineDesigns  Před 5 lety +1

      The finer tip would get a thinner line, I’m sure. With these different materials, I think you just have to try because I really didn’t think several items would work well and I was wrong. The ribbon was very surprising to me for one. It seems there’s little it won’t work on.

  • @opal777
    @opal777 Před 5 lety

    it makes sense that it would work better on smooth surfaces than on those with textures or a nap. The foil would get caught in and around the texture and not be as noticeable to the naked eye. I wonder how it would work with more than one layer though as the first one would lay down the smooth foundation for the others to catch on to.

    • @SugarShineDesigns
      @SugarShineDesigns  Před 5 lety +1

      I looked at Cricut’s felt this weekend and I really think it would work well on it. It’s very dense and stiff. The felt I used was not dense at all. If the pattern was placed low on the mat, you could put a new piece of foil down and do it again. It starts getting expensive that way depending on the size though. I was very happy with the textured faux leather and foam. If the fine tip was used, the line thickness would be less thick but personally, I like the more bold look. The bold tip really didn’t seem much different on paper than the medium tip but the fine is really much thinner than the medium or bold tips. Hope my observations help you. Janet

    I have been using the quill pen to foil napkins. It works great but sometimes can be hit or miss (foil rips through and rips napkins. Still trying to figure it all out. So far I have made 160 napkins with 40 more to go.

    My machine has only 1 holder and the Quill pens work on my machine. I have the Original Silhouette cameo and it only has 1 holder, so I guess maybe that problem is only on certain brand machines??? Cool idea foiling ribbon. Love how the foiling looks on the acetate. Tfs

    • @SugarShineDesigns
      @SugarShineDesigns  Před 5 lety

      Hi there! I should have been more clear. The viewer said that the Cricut Explore machines with only one holder won’t work with the Foil Quill. The Silhouette and Brother machines with one holder should work fine, just like you’ve experienced.

    Thank you for showing us how the foil looked on different surfaces. Have you used the magnetic mat? I wonder if there is a difference if you use it or just the mat. Does the tip work differently on the harder surface of the magnetic mat compared to softer regular mat? Would like to know what outcome your readers have had.

    • @SugarShineDesigns
      @SugarShineDesigns  Před 4 lety

      I have a review on it. But generally I don’t see any great difference in foil quality either way. It’s a lot more convenient to use the magnetic mat though. On the thicker, softer materials that produced the wider lines, maybe try the fine tip. Theoretically, I think as the pressure is applied to the tip, the softer material “Folds” up around the tip and is being heated and adhered by the sides of the nib. Maybe a finer tip would limit this a bit. i.e. the finer tip on a thicker, softer material might produce a medium line much like the medium tip on paper. I think I am explaining it the way it is going through my head!

    • @SugarShineDesigns
      @SugarShineDesigns  Před 5 lety

      Yes. I thought the same. I may try the pattern with some of the softest material and the fine nib as an update in a future video. But yes, your theory is the same as mine. I would be interesting to try the thick nib for writing on soft materials. That might produce an awesome look. In most cases I personally liked the thicker line but that is totally individual preference.

  • @SlowPCGaming1
    @SlowPCGaming1 Před 2 lety

    Use an infill on material like the burlap to give it a darker look. Or use thicker lines in your design for the burlap material. That should make it easier to see your foiled designs. I use flexible printable magnetic sheets. That would be worth testing. Also on laminated items like with cold press and hot press lamination sheets, rolls (Xyron), pouches of different thicknesses. This could be a cool way to add some flair to things that are already laminated as well as some security features for trade shows, festivals, craft shows, concerts, or smaller events like parties, weddings, school fund raisers, window clings, overhead transparencies, etc Would glass sheeting be too thick or fragile to run through the four types of machines this is made for?

    • @SugarShineDesigns
      @SugarShineDesigns  Před 2 lety +1

      Great tips and love the idea of flexible magnetic sheets. Would need to test if there’s enough tooth on it to get good adhesion. Your thoughts on burlap and other materials are great also. Glass sheeting would handle the pressure but it would need to be thin. You can engrave on thin plastic pieces so glass should be the same. Each machine has a thickness maximum so would need to stay under that thickness. However, I kind of doubt the foil would stick well to a slick glass surface. It needs something with some tooth to work well. Hope that’s helpful to you. Thanks for stoping by and asking good questions and offering intriguing suggestions! Janet
