    Foil Quill - All In One Bundle from Swing Design:
    shrsl.com/1iyef
    Here is what We R Memory Makers and Cricut say about machine damage and warranties:
    Statement from We R Memory Keepers:
    Will using the Foil Quill™with my cutting machine void its warranty? Unless your machine was purchased within the last year, it may already be out of warranty. If your machine is still under the manufacturer’s warranty and is somehow damaged by the Foil Quill after being used in accordance with its instruction manual, simply email our customer service team atacinfo@americancrafts.com for resolution.
    Statement from Cricut:
    Dear Cricut Retail Partners,
    It has come to our attention that a new product named the Foil Quill™ has been introduced to the Craft/DIY market by the We R Memory Keepers brand. It appears the device is intended to be used with electronic cutting machines - including the Cricut® family of cutting machines. The device inserts (as it relates to Cricut machines) into the Alternative Tool Housing with a cord plugged into the Cricut’s USB port. The resulting electrical current heats the tip of the Foil Quill which then moves over a foil sheet adhering the foil to an underlayment - such as paper.
    While Cricut embraces innovation and creativity, we want to take this opportunity to clarify some confusion that has arisen regarding this product. The Foil Quill device is not produced, endorsed by, or affiliated with Cricut in any way, yet the Cricut Maker® machine is prominently featured on the Foil Quill packaging, such that it could cause consumer confusion as to the source of the product. The prominent use of the Cricut Maker on the product packaging is not authorized by Cricut.
    Unlike other third-party accessory products which essentially attempt to perform the same - or similar -function to a Cricut product, the Foil Quill employs the electronic cutter to apply heat. This represents an unknown “use case” for the Cricut machine using voltage and heat. When Cricut introduces a product or accessory (e.g. Knife Blade) it is subjected to thousands of hours of quality testing across hundreds of machines, which are then scrutinized for variances by qualified engineers. The use case presented by the Foil Quill has not been tested or qualified in any way under Cricut’s quality assurance rigor. It draws voltage from the machine and places heat on, or near, the tool carriage and floor in a fashion that is beyond the current intended use of the Cricut machine. We cannot speak to the safety or effectiveness of the product, or its impact on the function of the Cricut machine.Because the Foil Quill is outside the current intended use of a Cricut machine, using it in connection with a Cricut will, of necessity, void the consumer’s Cricut machine warranty. We encourage retailers to be transparent with consumers with respect to the warranty implications of using the Foil Quill, and allow her to make an informed decision.

    MINC foil also works with glue and pressure. In this case the durability depends more the the chosen adhesive than the foil brand. My crafty pals and I have used a glue pad and our favorite stamps then run the foil covered, stamped image through our manual die cut machines. Works like a charm!

    Just an FYI on taxes when you buy online. Usually you do not pay tax when you buy online from out of state. But you are required to pay the tax for your purchases when you file your income taxes with your state at the end of the year. On you tax form, it asks you if you had any online purchases. Many people do not do it, but you are supposed to. An exception to that is if you are tax exempt for any reason. Like if it is purchase for a business with a tax ID # or for a non-profit organization.

    For paper craft at least, the cheaper, easy solution is to buy a Sakura Quickie Glue Pen. It's like a ballpoint with glue in it. The glue is blue when wet, clear when dry. Put that in a pen holder in your machine and draw with it. Make sure the glue is all dry before using cheap and easily available (non heat activated) foil. Press on foil, remove and you get the same result. Won't void your warranty and will only cost a dollar or two. I did a video recently showing the results.

    There are actually 4 "pens", not 3 - the 4th is a "calligraphy" tip HSN sold them together at one point, now they're not sold that way in very many places. [Sorry if I duplicated someone else's info!]
    The foils that work with the Go, Press & Foil or Glimmer machines should also work [no toner needed].

      @SugarShineDesigns  Před 4 lety

      Wynter Mackenzie Agreed. When I recorded this there were no pens out so I had no idea that they’d do a calligraphy pen. @wyntermackenzie4952 Před 4 lety +1

      Hi, Sugar Shine- I don't know if there is a broad calligraphy pen that works with any machine. I would say probably not, since calligraphy depends on turning the pen in the hand to make the thicks and thins. I don't think that would be workable with the pen held by the machine.

    • @SugarShineDesigns
      @SugarShineDesigns  Před 4 lety

      Wynter Mackenzie thanks! I did a search and confirmed as well that there isn’t a calligraphy pen for the machine, only the hand held version. I have all four freestyle pens but I am planning to give them away as drawings. They are tempting me though!

    I seriously doubt that the cutting machine companies would have a cause of action against WRMK. There are tons of products on the market that improve upon existing products or are marketed for compatibility to existing products. An example would be cell phone cables and cases. This would not be a concern for me at all. I still plan on getting a quill.

    • @SugarShineDesigns
      @SugarShineDesigns  Před 4 lety

      Agreed but when the Quill first came out Cricut especially was quite loud trying to scare everyone about voiding warranties and such. They put out pretty aggressive scary statements. Provo went after several small companies when they tried to set up cartridge subscription services and they have a history of suing for all kinds of things. For a long time they stopped other mats and blades from being on the market but that has also recently been more successful. I’m glad it was a bunch of bluster about the Quill. It appears that they have decided not to go after WRMK. The Quill line has been a fantastic success! It’s a great product and addition to our machines.

    What was the cool down time for each of the pens? I'm guessing if you used the metal mat you wouldn't need to use the steel heat shield. How long does it say you can leave the heated nib in close proximity to the mat and underlying plastic components of each type of digital cutter. How long did each nib take to complete drawing their pattern? Did it vary by thickness or did it even matter? Did you have to change the drawing pressure or speed while using the different types of foil quills?

    • @SugarShineDesigns
      @SugarShineDesigns  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi! I’ll do my best to answer. 1) cool down time to a temp you can comfortably touch is about 10 minutes 2) agree that the metal mat is adequate. Honestly the heat shield doesn’t seem necessary. I rarely use it anymore because it’s hot but unless you’re leaving it in place for a very long time, it’s not hurting anything. 3) to my knowledge there is no guidance about the time you can leave the nib in close proximity for any machine. However, my personal decision is no more than 10 minutes of static time 4) drawing and foiling is the same action so as fast as each machine draws is as fast as each foils. With newish Cameo, Maker and Brother machines out, I can’t tell you which is fastest but they all do have guidance about speed if you look at that. 5) thickness is determined by the nib and the machine type seems to have little impact. 6) speed and pressure setting are the same for drawing. Follow that guidance for each machine. You can always adjust if you think it’s needed. Generally I’d say the more complex, the slower you might set the machine. Hope this helps you. Thanks for watching! Janet

      karen cradic Yeah, they’re selling so you always get the most positive info. It’s been quiet out there about suing and seeing it in action, you’d have to leave it plugged in for hours before damage could happen. Just be thoughtful about leaving it plugged in only when you’re using it. Otherwise the manufacturer would never know you used this tool if you had a warranty claim not related to heat damage. I’m going to get a new Maker and I will be using my Foil Quill on it without fear. Hope that helps alleviate your concerns.

The pen tip isn't recessed as far into its plastic housing, making it a bit easier to write with. There's also a 4th pen style, with a wider calligraphic nib. so sillouette has a foiling system?

    • @SugarShineDesigns
      @SugarShineDesigns  Před 4 lety

      Well, Brother has their their own foiling system. I don’t have it but my understanding is they have a glue pen that writes out and fills in words and images. You then apply foil and another tool runs the foil down into the glue. Nice idea but why go through all that when the Foil Quill does it in one step. The software update they did makes the pen fill in the letters or images so this works really well on the brother. I don’t know if Silhouette has a foiling system but the Foil Quill has an adapter that makes it work on the machine, just like it does for Cricut and Brother machines.

    It does not seem cost effective ,what would be better in my opinion is to have a pen that uses some kind of liquid metallic or foil ink with the same effect..somebody invent that one,then it will sell well

    • @SugarShineDesigns
      @SugarShineDesigns  Před 5 lety

      That would be an awesome idea and invention! The tool is pretty expensive now for what it is but the foils aren’t too bad. With time, the Foil Quill will have better sale prices and maybe the box stores will even start taking coupons. Let’s hope anyway. Thanks much for stoping by. 🙂

      Use a Sakura Quickie glue pen, just like a ballpoint. Use that in a pen holder in your machine, works just great.

    Wow i am in Australia and find it funny that your companys all seam to sue each other over everything. I have the foil quil and i am using coutre creations heat foil that works really really well with the WRMK Quill.Its what our main crafting shop sell here and was happy i tired it. I was one of these people who said NOPE not buying it now worth the money but so glad i did it.

      Hi! Yes, I have another video where I tested a bunch of foils and I actually think that Cotour Creations works the best. Even better than their own foil! It’s close but the CC was just slightly better. So far, it is quiet on the suing front as far as what is out in the public. Check out the magnetic mat video in my playlist. I think that is a must have accessory! I personally really like the Foil Quill and am very glad I have it too. 😍

    Lots of info. Nice presentation. I have yet to invest in a newer Cricut. I have the expression. But, my question is.. how hot is that pen when you are changing them out for a bigger size? Would it be possible to hold it in your hand and actually press on some foil to create a design? Just wonder how that would work if at all. TFS!

      Good question. The casing seemed pretty cool but you’d have to be careful. But yes, I think you could leave it plugged in and slowly draw or write freehand. I thought it would be hot to the touch but it was only slightly warm.

    Crafter’s companion foil works.

    • @SugarShineDesigns
      @SugarShineDesigns  Před 5 lety +1

      I'll test it but I think I saw another crafter use it. In that video it came out with a vintage shabby chic appearance which isn't all bad but not what all of us would be looking for. I'm not sure though. It could have been the Spellbinders foil. I plan on testing both. There isn't that much heat foil out there as it turns out. Mostly there's the kind that works with glue - at least that's what I've been finding so far. Thanks for the head's up! I hope you're right. I don't like the idea of relying on one maker for the foil. Janet

    You can't sue someone for making an accessory.

    • @SugarShineDesigns
      @SugarShineDesigns  Před 5 lety

      I hope not but Cricut really is aggressive and they don’t like any competition. They are sue happy from what I’ve heard about other small companies who have tried to put out mats or pens for the Cricut products. And those are accessories too.

      The MISTI sued the crap out of several companies for this reason.

    • @erum.m
      @erum.m Před 5 lety +1

      @@cristinaljones As far as I know no company made accessories for MISTI...they made products that were similar. And since theirs is patented, they can go down that route. But I guess they have not been successful so it must be that other products have enough differences to warrant them getting away with it.
