How to Use the Foil Quill on a Cricut

  • The foil quill from We R Memory Keepers might be on your crafting wishlist. I am running down how to use this tool on a Cricut Explore Air 2.
    Please note that any use of an accessory that is not from Cricut will void your warranty and the quill has not been tested with the Cricut. Use at your own risk! Otherwise, have fun creating gold foil prints with your machine! Also, the quill only works with heat activated foil so be sure to buy the correct type!

    I'm posting this for anyone who is like me who is having trouble with the fine point quill tearing the foil. In my case, I'm using thin calfskin leather, approximately the same thickness as the thinnest tooling leather option from the material settings. I'm using the cricut maker 2. The issue, I think, is that the tip is too pointy. I have tried adjusting the material settings pressure but as this quill slot A for pens instead of slot b for cutting/debossing/engraving, I don't think that the changes I make to material settings affect the pressure of the pen. I have tried wetting the surface of the leather before placing the foil but that didn't help. I tried an adhesive spray for the foil but that caused flecks of foil to end up on the leather where I didn't want them. I have tried many different material settings. My solution is this: First, you need to have the foil as tight across the material as you can get it. Second, allow the fine-point quill to heat for at least 15 minutes. Third, select "Tissue Paper" as your material substrate. I believe it's the material with the least pressure the cricut maker applies, but I can't confirm that. Finally, and this is the tricky part but the part that actually got this working for me consistently, when you load the quill with the adapter into slot A, don't place it all the way down into the slot as far as it can go. Have the quill completely seated in the cricut adapter, but then have the adapter seated so that the top of the "C" on the adapter is still visible above the top of slot A. I have the top of slot A about level with the tip of the top hook of the letter "C", the top terminus of the line (hope that makes sense). You'll likely have to try adjusting how far into slot A you need to seat the quill/how much of the "C" you need visible to get that sweet-spot where it isn't tearing the foil but it is leaving complete, filled lines on the substrate. Once I did I marked the line so I could find it again. With this method I was able to get the thing working consistently on textured calfskin without tearing on a very small and intricate/detailed design. With the standard quill I was just able to use tooling leather setting and it worked great but was too thick for the details of the design. Haven't tried bold quill yet. Hope that this helps anyone having this problem.

      You need to make your lines draw lines to use the quill and it will ask for a pen which you will put in side A. You are probably changing them to foil lines but that is for the Cricut foil transfer tool.

    U can use other products other than cricut other than cricut brand,the only thing u need to use that’s cricut brand with the cricut is the housings,checked with and verified with cricut

    • @AngieHolden
      @AngieHolden  Před 4 lety

      You can use materials that are not Cricut. When you add other blades and/or housings, you do void your warranty. This product involves changing out the housing and using a non-Cricut tool.

      @d.g.4499 Před 4 lety +2

      Also, I think the warranty is only good for a year, so you don't have to worry about voiding it if the machine is older than that.

    • @AngieHolden
      @AngieHolden  Před 4 lety +2

      I buy mine off Amazon. Just be sure it is heat reactive and NOT adhesive reactive. I get the We R Memory Keepers brand just to be safe.

    Does it work with Cricut Joy? Thanks

    • @AngieHolden

      I have not tried that! I will try to put it in and see what happens. Maybe a future video?

    • @Sharonmarshall66
      @Sharonmarshall66 Před 4 lety +2

      From what I've seen of the Joy, it probably won't. The tool carriage is a different size from Maker and Explore Air 2. WRMK wouldn't have the time to release an adapter to work with the Joy just yet.
      Plus, with Angie's warning, it would void the Joy's warranty unless there has been an agreement between the two companies.

    • @AngieHolden
      @AngieHolden  Před 4 lety +1

      Sharon is correct! I will not be using my quill in my Joy at all. The carriage is a WAY different size and everything I have tried in it DOES NOT work but I have not pulled out the quill yet.

    • @xxxriotxxx
      @xxxriotxxx Před 4 lety +2

      The quills will fit in the Joy without any adaptor, however without an adaptor you will need to test depth (compare it to the pen the joy comes with) so it’s not too low or not in enough to hit the material

      Angie Holden boooo, does it get extremely hot? And would you recommend using it? Or would it be better to use foil vinyl instead? I have a cricut maker

    • @AngieHolden
      @AngieHolden  Před 3 lety +1

      It does get fairly hot. They do have the guard with it. Depending on what you are making they have adhesive foil that looks really good and you cut it just like vinyl!

    • @AngieHolden

      The residue did not come off easily! I do have a video on washing Cricut mats and that is what I had to do. You can see that here: czcams.com/video/HPwrDUrQiyc/video.html . My advice would be NOT to let the foil touch your mat!

      It is definitely the silver side down. I have made many of these at this point. The first one I did not have tight enough but I did fix that if you watch the entire video.

    October 10/2020, so mad when it finally arrived, quill pen standard tip. Where the devil do I plug this thing in, and the instructions so vague? the one peice of paper of instructions, vague again, show a partial white plastic square that its plugged into, what is this? why didn't it come with the product? how does one use this pen ? TERRIBLE .

    • @AngieHolden
      @AngieHolden  Před 3 lety

      You have to have a USB adapter to plug it into the wall. It doesn't come with that.

    • @TheMountainbobcat

      Thats whats wrong with buying this stuff, need this and that to make it work, but you buy a mixer and the motor isn't sold separately.
