Jerryd Bayless Was Supposed To Be A Star...

- For me 2008 was the first time the NBA had ever seen point guards explosive like the ones from this draft, mixed with speed, quickness, size and as advanced in their basketball development. It seemed like every year following a new point guard ammeter star was coming in, with the potential to become a superstar in the game. One guy many don’t remember from that ultra athletic point guard era is Jerryd Bayless. At one point he and Derrick Rose were my favorite point guards to watch, and he reminded me of Rose in certain instances. Those 2 I just knew were going to be special in the league, as they had all the necessary skills to do so when you factor in being high draft picks, more minutes in an NBA game, open floor and the go get your style of NBA play vs college. Derick Rose was Derrick Rose, he was generational, and went on to have to precedent setting start to his career before injuries brought him down more than a few notches, but Bayless to me was not too far behind. I remember his hoop mixtape being one of the best I’ve seen still to this day. He was unstoppable in high school, two time Gatorade state player of the year in 2006 and 7, and McDonald’s all American in 2007 that averaged 38 points 8 rebounds and 7 assist his junior year and 33 7 and 6 the next. At that point there was nothing that could’ve told me Bayless wasn’t destined to be a star. Instead he became a journeyman that retired at just 30 years old. Wish Bayless was given the keys from the beginning to a team. Still think his career could've been great.
He was ranked ahead of Derrick Rose, Blake Griffin and James Harden in hugh school
Agreed, I felt very bad for Bayless when he got traded to the Blazers that night.
Bayless was 1of my favorite combo guards .I thought he could have Flourish at the 2spot for the right team . He had potential. He was kinda like a Monta Ellis without the clout
Hugh school lol
@@carlwallace1129 Monta had a deeper bag, but was a notch lower athletically.
Jared Bayless, OJ Mayo, Kevin Love, Eric Gordon, Drose, Michael Beasley, I can’t count how many times in middle school I got kicked out of class for watching their high school highlights 😂😂 the Golden Age of high school basketball
Cold era
Ball is life had all of their highlights str8 🔥 😂
Dont forget b Jennings
I think all of those dudes played in the rose city showcase. I remember when I was younger and watching that tournament every year. Meanstreets had drose and Eric Gordon,
OJ mayo and bill walker were fun to watch too
Draft class was crazy as hell !
This guy was soooo awesome. And him at Arizona and James Harden at Asu had some great battles
Pac 10 was loaded
I was watching a JJ Reddick podcast and they mentioned David Lee losing his starting position to Draymond Green. He was an integral piece for the Warriors and never recovered from that injury
Everybody can't be a Star ✨ it's a blessing to even make to the league
Joe Johnson !! One of the forgotten SG/SF of the 2000’s. Could of had a hall of fame career
Joe Johnson was an assassin. There was nothing stunted about him.🤣🤣
@@FreeAgent797 nah fax!! But his name gets lost now these days . If he stayed on Suns who knows he could had a HOF CAREER. Or If he didn’t get drafted to the Celtics his career would got off the ground quicker.
ISO JOE ?! yea that’s a dawg on the court fr
He will be in the HOF
@@poloregal he’s really good player but not transcendent. Comp was stiff at his position . Kobe , wade , lebron, tmac, Vince , ray Allen , Carmelo . Wasn’t heavily marketed either he’ll be forgotten about .
Shelden Williams, Miles Simon, Jeffery Taylor, Brendan Wright
Good list. Mine's is Martell Webster, Anthony Randolph, Roy Tarpley, and Terrance Morris
@@thedoranwilliamsshow6863 Anthony Randolph is my favorite player and Martel Webster does need video
Jerryd had a beautiful jumper too, he remind me of Jay Williams from Duke alittle but Bayless is more athletic
We need a John Jenkins Stunted Growth I played against him in highschool he was putting up 45ppg and ended going to Vanderbilt University drafted #23 by the Hawks
He didnt get real playing time til later in his career
His hoopmixtape 🔥🔥
do d.j. augustine next. the man picked ahead of jerryd bayless
I thought he had star written all over him coming in as well , I thought for sure he had the tools to be like a Brandon Roy / Dwade type of guy.
Your comment about the one-star era was so apt. It's really hard to think of such a concept now since 2008. And even if people didn't gravitate together in free agency, you needed to get at least 2 by drafts or trades in order to get the title.
Jerryd Bayless was that dude in high school
Dude played 15 years! Sure in HS and college he was supposed to be the next big thing, I remember people calling him Arizona Jordan. But he had a decent career. That many years in the league averaging almost 10 points is nothing to hate on.
He played 11 years , and his last 3 years he only played around 80 games total,he just quite didn’t live up to the high expectations but he was a decent backup guard.
@MrSlicktherick 11 years is still a long time
I remember playing against him at lifetime fitness his senior year. He was so nice! You could tell it was effortless for him against other players and I played high school and some community college. He was a real chill guy.
Great vid once again. I don't know if he was MVP of that first summer league he played in but I seem to recall that he was one of the stand outs in it putting up some huge numbers.
Yup he was. Thank you
@@stuntedgrowth Watching your vid here, brought back an interview where the interviewer asked (I think it was Kevin Love) if there's any players out there that they thought would be big but just never took off. I think they said they couldn't think of anyone but when they thought about it more, they said "Bayless". I think it was Bayless' 3rd or 4th year at the time. I remembered that because I wondered why his growth seemed stunted after watching that summer league.
Ahhh....Jerryd Bayless. I thought his game was so much like Jay Williams' game, and that his career would amount to what Jay's would have been if not for the motorcycle accident.
Great analysis on Bayless (and for many other players) at the 7:48 - 7:51 minute mark. While he had great athletic attributes (leaping, quickness, and strength), one physical attribute he was not blessed with was arm length/span. Just looking at him (and not knowing his actual measurements) he looked to have shorter than average arm length. Conversely, a player like Frank Ntilikina lacks a bit athletically, but has some serious arm length/span.
He reminds of me Desmond Bane with his shorter than average arms. They also have a similar physique.
@@Supersupremegang LOL true on Bane....I still remember JJ Redick during the draft (after having his arm length measured) being analyzed with T-Rex syndrome!
Yes yes yes!!! I remember i used to think he was gonna breakout in Toronto! I thought he was gonna be a 23 ppg and 7 assists type guy for most of his career. Too bad it didn’t go at all as i thought. He had the talent.
He played good for toronto. We should have kept him and gave him more burn.
@@kengrant3227 I remember him actually having a very solid run for like a few months.
Dawg he was in the class with Drose mayo and the gang ! This was an elite class he was in!!
Just started watching your videos. Great content.
I saw Jerryd Bayless play in High School and he was definitely a raw athlete… explosiveness, quickness, speed, great jump shooter and could jump out the gym. It was sad to see his career go by so quickly
I don't know. I didn't catch his high school / college career over here in Germany, but when I saw him in the NBA, I just thought: "Hmm, nice score-first guard" but his playmaking and defense didn't look up to snuff, as you've covered on stunt #2. On top of that, his three-ball was really inconsistent. Some seasons, he was an elite shooter over 40 percent, other seasons he was below average. I liked him as instant offense off the bench.
He was something else in High School. Came in as a 9th grader dominating. Literally only went right and was still putting up 30.
Glad he's doing well.
I wouldn’t say it’s Portland that hurt young PGs. I would say it’s mainly Nate McMillan. Nate always liked his veteran PGs. I sometimes wonder if Dame’s growth would have been stunted if Nate was around for one more season.
Can you do a stunted growth on George McCloud, He played college ball at Florida State and got drafted #7 by the pacers in 1989.
Another great video
These videos are top tier
I locked Bayless up when we played the AZ Magic at an AAU tourney in Vegas... Held him to 34 points & 8 assists.. 😎
They BARELY beat us like 91-63
Dude did a windmill on a fast break from the 3rfd hash 😂
The sports world is 100% about situations.
Still has the best windmill package of all time
Bayless
Roy
Rudy Fernandez
Aldridge
Oden
🔥🤯
CANT FORGET LAMARCUAS ALDRIDGE
@@Ynkno man Rudy Fernandez is a textbook stunted growth he was so talented but he wanted the nice life in spain
His last name is Bayless; what'd you expect? 🤭
Always been a stand up guy, his brother has been a buddy of mine since we were freshmen at Morehouse….Jerryd used to come through
I never understood why he didn't pan out.. sometimes I believe he really got drafted by the wrong team..how can you draft a guy like this but don't get to run the squad..but it seems the BLAZERS always waste talented guards..it's a damn shame
He said injuries lol
Love this video, people forgot how good he was supposed to be and how athletic he was. It’s crazy that he just became a knockdown shooter to stay around in the league.
This is great ! But you should’ve brought up him winning summer league MVP playing SG … he said himself that was his biggest mistake not playing point guard that summer, which messed up his groove.
Played him in high school. We were in the same class 2007. Fun times
I remember when he got traded to Portland on Draft night from Indiana!
Jerryd Bayless was so much fun to watch. Similar athleticism you could argue with the likes of DRose and Russ, but with a better/consistent jumper from the get go.
Aside from that, would love to see a Stunted Growth on the Nets' Sean Williams and Terrence Williams. Both were athletic freaks for nature and had some skills that came naturally. Sean aka Area 51 at his prime was such a shot blocking menace, while Terrence would throw down anything.
Edit: You do have a Terrence Williams one, much respect! I had no idea originally.
Damn! I miss OJ Mayo and Bayless. I used to copy OJ Mayo's game. Lol!
Andrea Bargnani was a Number 1 over all pick in the NBA and was a forgotten about class
But suppose to be the next Dirk Nowinski and super star in Toronto
Did you ever do Adrian Autry? God Shammgod? Rashad McCants?
Bayless had a chance in Milwaukee tbh
I used to go crazy with bro and broy on 2k10 😊
Johnny Flynn next same era you talking
ayy gang u gotta level ur audio man
the clips be louder or weaker than ur narration
Damn you dropped this right on time. About to watch this while I roll up this gas ⛽️
It's crazy how this could have been Westbrook if OKC gave up on him after his rookie year since he wasn't a PG early on and KD wasn't KD yet to the Thunder organization.
Always known him as a really good shooter that made big shots in big games didn’t know HE was that athletic and always noticed his short arms so I wasn’t trippin HE do have short arms for his height
I think politics played a role in he’s career
Once your labeled a certain player then it’s hard to shake that
You gotta rub your elbows with the right ppl to make it in the league, no reason why he’s still not in the league
His hs mixtape was insane
He would go crazy this era fr he had a clip
Bayless was a very interesting case study. It’s like he was playground superstar that couldn’t figure out the 5 on 5 game. He didn’t make others around him better and his basketball iq didn’t match his physical ability
After seeing this I feel like Gabe York should get a piece done on him.
I remember when he and Roy were giving an interview and Roy looked at him like laughing at him maybe I'm wrong maybe he was proud who knows
Dude was the truth on that old 2k when he was on Portland
He was a monster coming our of hs
The main thing i remember about him was the way they spelled his name in NBA2k like JerryD Bayless, so it looked weird AF. Took them years to fix it.
Do Mitch McGary from Michigan
That boy had hops tho
He was cold 🥶. I still can't believe he's not a future hall of famer. Goes to show talent doesn't always transfer to the NBA. It's dudes in prison wit 15 years because of one bad decision that could play in the League . Or didn't practice enough got rich and lazy like Kwame Brown. Just didn't make good decisions in life.
That nigga was nice on 2K tho
Dude was D Rose with a jump shot and never got the keys
Do a how good was Evan turner.
You must remember a different Brandon Roye than me cuz Buddy definitely was a ball mover and needed a scoring guard next to him
Also, do Brandon Jennings.
07 in AZ all you heard was Bayless and C Polk… Hawkins for his bounce buuuut yeah. Lol
Needed a different franchise to start with. Also ahead of his time
Shout out da house im finna graduate next year
Jerrdy Bayless was like that when I just seen him as a role gut
Got on the court looking like Skip Bayless.
He was nice
so he basically became Carlos boozer in the end 🤣
5:53 Damn
Nate McMillan killed this boy confidence!
I figured he was the second best guard thinking only Rose was better back in 2008. Who knows maybe he develops better being forced into passing KD the ball and becoming a PG on the fly like Westbrook did.
He killed my high school back in 2007 my high school is the team wearing the white and maroon jersey.
so, based on a high school mixtape he was supposed to be this and that.... that's what's wrong with bball in the US. hyped on highlights of crossovers, heroball and dunks against 5ft3 futur salesman. they never show you turnovers, lack of defense, terrible shot selection and inexistant bball IQ.... how many exemples before people start to realize that all this BS doesn't mean sh!t once they get in the NBA?
Ricky Rubio
Brandon Roy is also another case of a what if
That’s just because of injuries. Everyone knows why.
Him being drafted to portland was an issue
Facts 💯 Portland jail blazers
ayyee now
I didn't think his handles were good enough to really be a star. But he was a good player and did well for himself.
He didn't have a ton of feel for the game, and his PG instincts were a little lacking. His biggest crime was not being born 6'5".
I bet he knows Forrester 😄
How about Dorrell Wright?
Do Shabazz napier
Same career stats as Jeff Teague who became an All-Star so the team therory could be valid, but IN let him go too
He was a decent guard
Do jahii Carson
Chris skywalker from Florida
He could play. Coaches failed to use him right
I knew from the jump he would be a role player. That was his ceiling.
🙄
Pay up with the layup!
IT DOES NOT LAST 4 EVER BUT HE MADE IT BEING A PRO ATHELE IS HIGHLY COMPETITIVE
Decent scorer who didn't defend or pass.. Not couldn't, he just DIDN'T
I need to check through the videos. You may have done this one, but Kwame Brown. He was a bust, who was actually a decent role player eventually and had a decent career. But still a bust. Interesting tale.
Skip Bayless son.
Bro I appreciate your content for the most part but sometimes I feel like you should change the title of some of these videos to just short biographies because how was his gross stunted? Out of all of the guards from that time you expected him to still emerge as a star? A 13-year nba career for a 6-2 guard is a success. Making a video saying jerryd Bayless was expected to be a star in that era is just a reach bro.
Nah his hype was west coast D rose in highschool and college.
In the right situation he could’ve been Lou Will, certainly had the tools.
