Everyone is a "bhakt" of their own belief and opinion. Calling and categorizing people as bhakts in a derogatory way would be offensive to Hindus more than any other community. No other community refers to their devotion towards their respective religion as bhakti that I'm aware of. If you don't understand this point I have made, you should not think you have secular views.
As far as politics goes, vote bank is all that parties truly care about. Unfortunately religion is a means for securing vote banks in politics. It would be a blessing from God if politics and religion can be separated in India as well as other nations.

During the hindu muslim riots he risked his life and went to the strong holds of both the extremist muslims and the extremist hindus and asked them to stop the riots and saved countless of lives. Savarkar who started out with aim of contributing to India's freedom struggle but lost his way in a very short time and then became a man who just spewed hatred and became an instrument for the british to widen the hindu muslim divide. What muslim league did to the muslims , savarkar did it to the hindus. Savarkar in his book the six glorious epochs of indian history called shivaji and chimaji cowards for NOT raping the muslim women of the territories they had captured but on the plus side he saw the flaws of the hindu traditions like caste system and was against it. Savarkar was a nuanced man but one cannot forget his extremist ideology and his role in the gandhi assassination. Please don't compare such a man to gandhiji. savarkar meant it as rhetoric that if hindu kings were as brutal towards muslim captives then the demographic shift would not have happened in India, which is true. But this did not happen and hindu leaders like shivaji treated muslims captives with fairness all th while muslim leaders converted and massacred hindus indiscriminately. As the matter of rape as a political tool. iit is the most despicable deed a man can do to a woman but you cannot deny it was used by muslim leaders all the time. it was even used by pakistan in 1971 war against bangladesh.
