    Gandhiji told
    The Seven Sins are:
    Wealth without work.

    Religion without sacrifice.
    Politics without principle.

Gandhi's non violence was not the only reason for Indian independence. Netaji subhash chandra bose's INA the main reason for indian independence. The british pm Atlee in late 1950's had claimed to west bengal governor that gandhi's role had "minimal" effect in India's freedom fight. INA had 60000 soldiers in which 26000 soldiers had lost their lives.

I've very high respect for Prof. Guha but am really surprised he doesn't mention a word about the source of Mahatma Gandhi's relevance. Ahimsa, Aparigraha, Asteya, Sarva Dharma Sambhava are all core beliefs of Hindu and Jain philosophies. Interestingly enough he doesn't forget to mention "Hindu fundamentalism" in the same breath as other religious fundamentalism but forgets to explain that other than in India all the Semetic religions have had a bloody history all across the world. Mahatamji was a very fine, strong (but not a unique) example of a culture and thought (eko Satya, viprah bahudha vadanti) that has been nurtured for millennia by a very intellectual, rational and an extremely humble race. Everything that Gandhi did on the outside was only the manifestation of what he was on inside, in his mind, in his emotions. He had integrity of thought and deed. I certainly feel that by not touching this important aspect of the source of Gandhi's relevance Prof Guha has missed delivering a deeper message. If this is what was taught at Berkeley than I guess someone may come back claiming a refund.

What about his attitude concerning then Africans as sub-humans? Why did he oppose Ambedkar's anti-caste 1927 Satyagraha? He never fasted against untouchability but vehemently opposed (or fasted till death) the concept of separate electorate for untouchables(sorry there wasn't a sensible term for them back then) despite of the fact that he had already conceded it to Muslims and Sikhs. Why didn't he get along with the intellect of Ambedkar when they were both against untouchability? Why was Ambedkar so anxious at the idea of new born India?
