How Our Hormones Control Our Hunger, Eating & Satiety

  • This episode I discuss how hormones from our gut, liver, pancreas and brain control our appetite-- and the specific tools we can use to adjust those hormones in order to achieve specific goals. I explain the brain areas that control our desire to eat, and our desire to stop eating. I discuss a hormone we all can make that is regulated by UV-rays from sunlight that reduces our appetite. I also explain that when we eat controls our appetite and not the other way around (and how to leverage that fact). I describe how we are basically always eating until we reach a threshold level of fatty acids and amino acids in our gut and the factors that can alter that signaling and make us eat far more than we need. I also explain how insulin, glucose and glucagon work, why cholesterol is so key for ovary, adrenal, liver and testes function and how the ketogenic diet impacts glucose and thyroid levels. As always, I describe many tools: specific supplements, prescription compounds, specific types (and timing) of exercise to regulate hormones, specific timing and types of eating, ways to reduce sugar cravings by triggering the release of the hormone CCK, and more.
    Note: A future episode will cover Thyroid hormone. Also, I misspoke when explaining POMC neurons. I said “P-M-O-C” but should have said “POMC”. Apologies. The name I gave for what POMC is, however, was correct: "proopiomelanocortin".

    I'm hooked on you Huberman, I have managed to lose 24 pound's by your teachings in about 4 months. I'm 74 years old and feel like 50. I sleep good, I eat healthy, and do my walking with vigor in my step! I'm so amazed that I, though not or ever was remotely introduced to science, understand the concept of science. I can't thank you enough. My kids are wondering what happened to their mother who was close to losing her independence, and now walks every day and lives independent in every way. I feel I have many years left, God willing and intend to stick with you,

      I've always been ravenous for knowledge. The Molecule of More explained why. It was an embarrassingly accurate portrait of myself. It's always been very much a double-edged sword. I didn't live in the same place for more than two or three years since I left for college, always wanted more knowledge, more adventures, more experiences, more flings... More booze and other substances... Never stayed put long enough to have stable relationships or career... I'm about to turn 40, finally getting my life on track, and with the help Huberman's advice (combined with my love for all forms of movement and physical training), I think I'm now mentally and physically healthier than I ever have been. Some people think I'm in my 20s. Pretty sure I'm fitter than I was in my 20s. So apparently I got away with my youthful stupidity, and with Huberman's help, I'll have a well-functioning body and brain for a long time to come.
      Take care of yourselves, everyone. You only get one body/brain, and what happens to it by default if you live a typical modern lifestyle is not pretty. But it's not necessary or inevitable either.

    It's now a year later, 75 almost 76 years old! that I posted how much I appreciate you Andrew Huberman. You have changed my life and I'm so grateful to you. I'm now down 40 pounds and feel like 50 years old or maybe even less LOL! the only thing I have changed is take your advice and listened to your recommendations on other podcast. Due to the changes I implemented I have a new outlook on life. My fasting time starts at around 7.30 pm until the next day 11am . I drink a lot of lemon water and other liquids. I retain more in my awesome brain and walk as much as I can and exercise a lot. A good beat music motivates me to no end! Some physical Challenges have happened and life is a work in progress at every level. If do feel that I have to go back and get re-charged by listening on a regular basis to motivate myself then you Andrew are my go-to person. God bless you, and thank you.

      70 yrs old female here. 27 Lbs down in 4 months after binging on Dr. Huberman's videos. which contain a wealth of knowledge. Life circumstances /bad stuff hit me like a brick wall and the last 8 years I did a lot of lawyering, stuck behind a desk 24/7 with hardly anytime even to brush my teeth. I won 32 lawsuits including one at the court of appeals where I represented myself and wrote a 900-page brief in 7 months. All these years I did not take care of myself. Circadian rythm? Forget it! Food: snacking behind a desk; healthy snacking (nuts! lots of nuts!) and not so healthy (chocolate), no exercise, no vitamins, no sunlight, You get the picture: result: I gained 68 pounds! Once I decided to take a break from lawyering (no statute of limitations; maybe resume later) and pay attention to my health because I realized that I was out of breath just going up aflight of stairs, could no longer clasp my hands behind my back, difficulty cutting my toe nails or wipping my ass, clasping my bra behind my back, shoulder pain when raising my hand to comb my hair... just a terrible state of affairs. I had done keto before when Dr. Atkins diet was in vogue and it had worked at the beginning (water loss) but I really did not count calories (as he recommended) , did not exercise and I know know that although I was in ketosis, I was most likely burning dietary fat
      5 months ago I decided to fight for my life: i understood that I was insulin resistant and most likely borderline diabetic. I read about nutrition day and night, watched videos day and night and knowing myself, I concluded that I was a carb addict and maybe even a food addict. I started walking. I suffered dragging myself to walk 10-15 min/day. My first 1 mile walk was a big victory day! Today I walk 6 to seven miles a day with my 99% ruptured Achille's tendon! Actually, I started HITT running 30 seconds walking 20seconds! No more cravings, resistance training, sauna, light therapy, 100 supplements, back to size 8-10 from 14-16. I was so fat that my own shoes would no fit me anymore! In bed at 8:30 up at 4-5:AM living life to the fullest. I owe thanks to all these generous youtubers debunking the SAD diet from Dr. Huberman, Dr Jamnadas Pradip, Dr. Fung, Dr. Ekberg, Dr. Boz, Dr. Mandela, Dr. Mindy Pelz, Dr. Gundry, Dr. Attia, Dr. Ken Berry,Ms. Charlene johnson, Ms.Melissa Neil, Dr. Berg, Dr. Asprey, Dr. Sinclair, Dr. Westman and many more...too many to name but they know who they are. Forever grateful to all as well as to their interviewers. Thank you all!

      My body performs best when I wake up late evening, drink coffee and do a hiitt training workout or long distance run. I am able to do this while fasting typically 16 hours and then I’m ready to eat around 630 to 8 AM. I will have my. “Dinner” when most people are getting up to start their day and have their breakfast. I eat very healthy, asparagus, fish, or egg whites, lots of salads and roughage and then I try and go to bed by noon. I have done this for YEARS. Unfortunately the rest of the world doesn’t operate like this so in the past two months, I’ve tried to change my schedule completely. And I have managed to put on 10 pounds. And my menstrual cycle came back not happy about either of these two things more so the weight gain and the hormonal changes that I don’t like. And I’m constantly hungry and if I try and intermittent fast all day long, I cannot get a workout in. I’m far too tired. It’s so frustrating because I want to be on a normal schedule like the rest of the world without being tired and hungry all day long or putting on an enormous amount of weight.

    I asked my doc For years. Since 2017 to help me understand my sugar addiction. I go nothing. Eat healthy and walk he said. I love that you explain why I’m addicted which tells me how to make changes. Tonight after dinner my husband and I rode bikes. Move! I am listening to this cast again.       You did this also because you see dr Huberman as an authority and more worthy of your respect, while you don't see your dr the same way.
      In the end is all about discipline: eating healthy, avoiding snacks and moving your body. It's not about some motivation you got from a video that will last maximum a few weeks.

    Every podcast really helpful. Lost 14 pounds since listening and registering. Apple Cider drinks 2X every day for a year with lemon 🍋 reset my sugar taste. Surprising and unexpected. Now I can walk through a bakery store, donut shop not even tempted because everything seems too doggone sickening sweet. Slightly bitter Chocolate still looks good but not overwhelming. Ghirardelli has dark with a bitter chocolate.

    Powerful episode. Really helps me make the connection between processed foods and constant hunger and the drive to eat/overeat and how it damages the communication between the body and the brain. I am sure this has a pretty profound effect on individuals who struggle with compulsive eating behaviors. And, understanding the connection between HDL and manufacturing of estrogen -- yep, that was helpful AF!     Just found your channel and I have been binge watching these videos! I’m overweight and have been eating processed foods a lot over the years and I overeat like crazy and never feel full unless I feel sick or get tired. I had no idea the processed foods were messing with my stomach in a way to keep my stomach from sending the signal to my brain that I’m full.     The morning sunshine is a surreal thing. I used to meditate and sit in the garden every morning as soon as I wake up, and I felt energetic, happy and highly motivated throughout the spring and summer! Then winter kicked in and although I used to go outside lot's for walks, I mainly did it in the evenings. Living in northern Europe, my exposure to sun of course hit dramatically and I was actually suffering quite badly. This podcast has taught me - amongst many other things - to take ligh exposure more seriously towards the darker seasons of the year. Thank you !

      @@tomhannaford7824 Well, message like "Wow changed life in X days you are my idol" is common in self-help community and most of the time means short-term motivational burst, that lead to false sensation of change and improvement, when in reality you changed one guru for another and when you introduce smth new your dopamine skyrockets .
      I just starting exploring channel and found it to be good source of knowledge on the topic, but not much practical foothold, so this 10 days claim sorta triggered me, sorry.
      Maybe you could share, how you use this information to your benefit? In 6 month, did it really changed something for you?

    Andrew, The power of your words is exponential. For example, Understanding how glucose interacts with neurons has been so powerful in helping my own patients kill sugar (and eating) addiction.. Dispelling that "idea" of being hypoglycemia (therefore I have to eat!) and understanding that it is an activation of the AdRP neurons.. changes the game. You help people see that the "feeling" of hunger can be a positive and the body (and mind) can be trained to welcome those benefits. THANK YOU.

    So, I wished to experience an audiobook authored by you after first hearing the great sense you were speaking at joe rogans podcast.
    Now, this is even greater. Apart from this fantastic ressource being free, this podcast just has the open feel to it. You can present the information you want, how you want without having to set every word in stone. Not implying a book wouldn't give a certain freedom in expression, just that a podcast is more like a conversation.
    And wow, is it a privilege to listen to you.
    This is genuinly the best podcast I could have ever wished for existing. This is like a modern Aristoteles(Who isn't wrong because he has science to grow with, instead of heavenly Plato to learn from) sitting down and speaking to those interested in bettering their lifes.

    Thank you Dr. Huberman for yet another elaborate review of a question that's been lingering in my head for a while. I normally track my calories every day and eat about 45% carbs but I plan to adjust my ratios a bit to more fats because I've noticed that I just never really feel full. I'm also going to adjust the order in which I eat my foods as well to feel a bit more satiated. Thanks again!!

    I''ve been Huberman Podacast addict for the past 2 weeks . My sleep improved dramatically after the dawn light fix implemented from day1 after exposure to My First Huberman Podcast. I feel human again. I'm starting to feel whole again. I want live longer. Daily I'm making these incremental changes. I'm keeping this addiction.     Hello, I cant thank you enough for all the valuable FREE information you have shared to me. You saved my life in so many ways in regards with explaining and sharing tools on how to cope with certain bad habits and how to manage physical and overall well being especially my mental health. I am a 33 years old who suffers from chronic fatigue, possible reactivation of EBV virus might be the cause, no focus, low dopamine, overweight and I no longer have a thyroid since I had a thyroidectomy done in 2013 at only 23 years old. After I finally found a Dr who listened to me, I slowly got motivated to fight for my health for my kids. They are the ones who gets affected the most. After listening to your podcasts, I am so full of hope and 31 lbs lighter, I am now at 136 lbs with much health and energy just following your advice on staying on the sun in the morning and move or exercise , cant believe it was that simple. My depression is manageable and I am less moody and irritable. Thank you for giving me my life. I got so excited when I heard you say you are going to explain thyroid next, I hope you include people like me who doesn’t have any thyroid but relies on a synthetic hormone pill each morning. I feel like there isn’t so much studies or available help for people like us. Thank u and God bless you more than you deserve!! My hero!! ❤

    Empowering people to direct their OWN HEALTH....love love love it! Been teaching this way for 20 years in fitness and wellness and you make it SO MUCH EASIER. We always said that 'it's not calories in and calories out but digestion -> assimilation -> elimination' But it is so wonderful to see the studies that back up some of the knowledge of old with the clinical and peer reviewed studies that were just more anecdotal 20 years ago...it gives us all hope who have sort of struggled in the background for so long and been looked at like we were nuts and not based in anything. Keep it up for all of us!! Big head pats to Costello too! :)

      My body performs best when I wake up late evening, drink coffee and do a hiitt training workout or long distance run. I am able to do this while fasting typically 16 hours and then I’m ready to eat around 630 to 8 AM. I will have my. “Dinner” when most people are getting up to start their day and have their breakfast. I eat very healthy, asparagus, fish, or egg whites, lots of salads and roughage and then I try and go to bed by noon. I have done this for YEARS. Unfortunately the rest of the world doesn’t operate like this so in the past two months, I’ve tried to change my schedule completely. And I have managed to put on 10 pounds. And my menstrual cycle came back not happy about either of these two things more so the weight gain and the hormonal changes that I don’t like. And I’m constantly hungry and if I try and intermittent fast all day long, I cannot get a workout in. I’m far too tired.

      Still waiting for an episode like this, unless I missed it. As someone who enjoyed excellent health before pregnancy and is now trying to recover my relationship to sleep, memory etc I want to echo the interest in this topic.

    An episode on different types of fasting would be very interesting. I feel kind of drive towards dry fasts. I do it every Monday since 3 months and I'm thinking about a prolonged one

    Coming across your podcast has been life-changing. I can point to the very day I started listening to you in terms of how much of a difference I see in my life. I particularly enjoy the format of your podcasts. It makes for an easy listen with suggested courses of action.
    What I would enjoy as a potential topic would be a dedicated episode or series of episodes for the elderly, addressing the common problems (e.g., joint problems, hypertension, diabetes, etc.). I understand that you have touched upon these through the various episodes, but it would help to have it all consolidated so that it can be shared with people aged 50+. While I relayed the information that I gathered from your podcast to my (aged) loved ones, I realized that (1) hormone imbalance, and (2) drug interactions were key considerations. They have been reaching out to their doctors concerning the same, but I'm not quite sure if (at least some of) the doctors are open to trying life-enhancing supplements out. They are rather keen on going down the traditional route of prescribing medicines only when there is an issue, instead of being pre-emptive.
    In any case, sincere gratitude for what you're doing!
    P.S.: Your comments (and jokes) about Costello sleeping make you so much more relateable!

    Thank you for the great content each week! As for Stevia and gut microbiome; anecdotally I can attest that it absolutely wracked mine. When searching for papers on the topic about a year ago i could not find a single study...

    This is the kind of education I would dream up in a utopian vision of the near future that is available to anyone, empowers us to make sound decisions and renders us less helpless in face of the companies that exploit our drives.
    I feel a sense of hunger for knowledge that I can only remember feeling similar about when I was a kid playing with legos and toy cars or exploring the woods. Maybe later in practicing parkour with my friends.
    It informs me about how I want to raise my own kids one day, keeping that intuition and thirst for exploration alive.

      @L L Well spotted. 😅 Perhaps I could call it the ‘pre-utopia’: the second to last rung on the ladder, where rapture happens from the bottom-up, one person at a time, through individual transformation by education, rather than from the top-down by the hands of the all reigning monarch who does away with all evil institutions. 😁
