  • White Sulpher Springs "Fountain of Health" this spring was once a popular health resort attracting many people that wanted to drink the water and bathe in the spring. The spring was thought to have great healing qualities. Bryant and Elizabeth Sheffield bought land around here for a cotton plantation around 1835. After discovering this spring on the Suwannee River they constructed a hotel and spring house made from logs. Back then it was called Upper Mineral Springs but at some point became White Sulpher Springs. In 1903, the spring was enclosed by concrete and coquina walls. A four-story wooden bathhouse was constructed around the spring which had a concession area, clinical examination and treatment rooms. The town and spring began to fade out around the 1930's. The water flow at the spring ceased flowing around 1990. Today the structure still surrounds the spring and is great place to see and experience some history. It is right next to the entrance at Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park on the Suwannee River and part of The Florida Trail goes right by it. I love the town of White Springs. Every time family and I visit, we make sure to pay a visit to the old spring house and look at the spring.
