One thing to note about why rich people are more likely to negotiate. They won't be affected negatively if things go south. If you're not wealthy, you're probably afraid asking an employer for a higher offer will make them withdraw the offer, and you'll be in a bad place financially if you don't get the job. Whereas a rich person will be fine. In reality employers expect counteroffers and won't get offended. But the stakes feel much higher for a regular person, so it would make sense you don't want to rock the boat.
Also - rich people are more likely to work at jobs that ALLOW negotiation.
Every job I’ve ever worked at, they just told you your starting wage at the interview and breezed right through without even letting you get a word in.
Any of you actually considering clothing "single use" amazes me. Even if I buy something "fast fashion" I have it for 20 years. I wear things until I literally can't anymore.
I’m currently wearing a top I bought in 3 colors at Walmart four seasons ago. They’re what I primarily live in during the chilly months. Ultimately I plan to get better, higher quality clothes in the future. But these are doing just fine for now. Never considered clothes ‘disposable’.
I wear it out until it has holes or stains on it and then it becomes at home only clothes or my new hobo pajamas.
I don't think I ever perceived any clothes as intended for single use until this year when I saw "ugly christmas sweaters" with craft supplies attached that were thoroughly UNwashable. Like just having a light handwash would ruin the little geegaws, much less a machine wash. So weird.
I'm sure Halloween costumes get this treatment by some people too, but dang. Couldn't be me.

I feel like it comes down to quality too, I lot of tops I get turn into what I call “tomato shirts” they fit perfect when I buy them and end up short and wide after a few washes. I’ve been slowly writing off old navy for this reason and going to Nordstrom rak for the occasional deal on a higher quality product, although not always size inclusive 🙄
I am a cleaner and I forever tell my clients that it's my job to keep their homes clean. And not to feel guilty. All I ask is if they get the chance, clear the areas so I can get to them. Every now and then I will clear for them but I feel they think it's a intrusion of their privacy so I mainly do toys. But I love nothing better when I make my clients lives easier.

As a former cleaner, I will be hiring a cleaner when I’m in the place financially. It makes such a big difference for their daily lives, plus most cleaning companies a small businesses and often women owned businesses, which we love to support.
@c b exactly. I sometimes get annoyed by people coming into the field thinking its easy. But if I still see them around 2/3 years later I take my hat off to them. We all learn at our own pace.

Hi Chelsea! Another thing I think people feel cut out of due to income is enjoying Art! There are so many ways to see galleries, museums and plays for free/cheap in cities, local theatre and school productions in the suburbs, and of course, investing in buying Art as decor for your home which can also be workable in a lot of budgets if done with purpose. I don't know, I always felt excluded from high art growing up but now I'm at the f*** it, I'm going to enjoy it even if I'm not "meant to" stage

i don't know why people feel cut off from art based on income. that's a total misconception. it's one of the most accessible parts of culture where i live. buying visual art can be expensive, but viewing it is usually free. galleries are *always* free. museums almost always have 1 day a week which is free. thanks for this comment.

That's awesome if that's the situation *where you live*, but please don't generalize it like viewing art is one of the most accessible pleasures for everyone, financially speaking. For me and a lot of people it's different. I have to travel to another city/-ies - and gas is crazy expensive rn - and then pay quite a bit for tickets. They rarely have "free" situations-for example, all the free days most art museums here have are days I work and couldn't possibly go. Then there's the parking, costing almost as much as the tickets.
@@samevans1289 do you have a goodwill or similar thrift store where you live? do you have access to art supplies, or live anywhere near a hardware store, even a target/walmart? how remote is the place you live? can you get around at all without a car? that is why is specified where i live, but i have also lived in small towns. gotta say the only place i didn't have access to art was in a place so remote there was no internet service in the whole city, on top of a mountain in a yurt. i'm american btw, i don't wanna get too specific. even there, i made art. have you ever thought about creating access where it doesn't exist?

The topic was consuming art, not creating art. I'm talking about live viewing of paintings, sculptures, shows like ballet or symphonic orchestra, etc.
I just went to the library to get my resume and cover letter reviewed! They helped soooo much, I almost cried because I was so thankful
I love this video. My parents raised me with a lot of self limiting beliefs around money. I was convinced that getting my nails done, buying a home, going to restaurants with $40-50 meals on special occasions, going on international vacations etc. Were things that only the super rich had access to. I also was told in different ways that these are things I would never have access to. It never occurred to me that lower and middle class people could have these experiences. Unlearning these things was honestly powerful and painful, the amount of self doubt I had to fight against when I was going through the process of buying a home was almost crushing.
Omg outsourcing tasks is a revelation. Husband and I are both from immigrants families that pinch pennies as an impulse. This habit is especially hard to crack when you can do the task easily. One big thing we outsourced was laundry. I used to go to a laundromat for like 4 hours every 2 weeks and would just be exhausted and cranky all day. The epiphany was time vs money. Since we both work full time, weekends are really the only time we get to see each other. It was such a relief to drop everything off and come back the next day to folded laundry. I think it was a similar cost to me using the laundromat and I had more free time and was in a better mood in general. Plus, we’re supporting a small business. I try to tip generously also!
On the family criticizing her career choice, my advice would be: Don't take advice/criticism from people that don't have the life that you want...
Thank you for shouting out the library. Our city council voted to turn our local library to a new police station. What's worse is a member of the school board supports it and the local parks and recreation department supports it too. They wrote a letter to the county board to support the city councils decision because our library is run by the county not the city (thank goodness). We have gone to city council meetings to voice our support of the library. The city (who's city planner is also the police chief) is still trying. Support your local library.

Honestly outsourcing certain domestic tasks is a game changer. By using a grocery delivery service every other week I save so much time that I can be spending on something else and it ends up costing me maybe $5-10 more. Well worth a few hours that I can spend on myself instead of doing something I hate.

Absolutely agree on outsourcing. Now 95% of my grocery shopping is delivered. I only go out for specialty stuff or if I feel like it. I trust my market with choosing the fruit/vegetables and 99% of the time it turns out great. It even costs me less to pay for delivery than go myself and transport everything, when I account the precious time it takes to drag stuff home.
On that dinner party note, I highly recommend looking at estate sales for dinnerware and decor, especially if the source has a similar style to what you're looking for, especially stuff like fun plates, cloth napkins, placemats, etc. And extra so if it's a wealthier estate, I've found some amazing stuff for great prices and since it was one person/family's stuff it's much more curated than a thrift store.

Outsourcing groceries has been a life changer for me, especially since I can't drive. It isn't even expensive. Save-on-Foods will hunt for and deliver your groceries for a $5-$10 fee, depending on the timing. I've been using this service for the past 7 years.

Outsourcing some tasks was so hard but has made my life so much better. I was shocked how much money I was spending on coping with being too busy and how some of those expenses nearly immediately disappeared once I instead spent that money on outsourcing tasks. I still sometimes feel guilty because my parents can't afford to outsource the same tasks, but have to remember to enjoy my life within my means.

Re: libraries, your local library may also have free museum passes you can check out! So many people don't know about these and they're a huge asset for people who might not otherwise be able to go to an expensive museum.

This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I think normalizing outsourcing basic household functions is getting out of hand. I think it’s turning something that is really a luxury for most into another norm that we all need to aspire to. In most instances it will be cheaper to do it yourself, even taking into account the time expense. I understand the gender component, but to me that is distinct from the outsourcing. Most of us should learn basic management skills like cooking, cleaning, yard work, minor home repair because all of those costs add up quickly when you pay someone else to do them.
Even though I work several jobs I could never afford that. It's cheaper and faster to clean to live minimalistic than paying someone to clean my flat.
And some of these jobs are low hanging fruit for life satisfaction…the smell of a freshly laundered towel, a sparkling countertop….small joys. when so much of life is out of my control, I love these tiny bits of predictable enjoyment.. and when the job is out of hand, that’s a signal that I need to declutter, address impulse shopping, figure out why I’ve been putting the task off etc.
@@rpisuba there are people with ADHD for example for which task of keeping their living space or organizing things around them can be huge because of the unique mental difficulties that come with that disorder, and hiring someone might be a great help. But of course everyone is different.

I live in a city where there's a major clash of classes, where my husband and I love going to yard sales. I can tell you the rich people yard sales are the worst because they are typically house poor so they fill their giant house with stuff that still has the Ross stickers on the bottom and they price everything near retail. Middle income people buy nice stuff to "keep up" and price it lower.
I wouldn't call that house poor....I would call it being financially smart. The house is the value, not the decor crap inside of it. Buying nice stuff to keep up with others will keep you broke
I once experienced a yard sale just like this. The old lady wanted damn near 80% of the original retail price for a hardcover Harry Potter book. Like... Ma'am... You will NEVER sell that book for that price. (Especially now.)
I have gone to garage sales, estate sales, church rummage, and Craiglist sales in both CA and AZ and I can tell you for sure that the place to shop is the wealthy places bc that's where I have found my bargains. They get tired of their furniture, or whatever they may be, and have their garage sales just bc they want to get rid of their items fast so the new sets could be set up immediately. Even the thrift shop items are better bc the items being sold are from wealthy people's homes. The key is knowing what you really want that fits your style.
I feel that I am the only one who goes shopping as I do in my neighborhood and wonder who among them used to own what I just bought. 🤔😬😂I mostly don't invest in new furniture anymore bc doing so makes it easy for me to get rid of them without losing money. And hey, I can laugh all the way to the bank!
@@Ckawauchi35 this is especially true of estate sales. Often the family members just want to get through the giant pile of stuff, and they’re not too precious on picking out the good stuff from the cheap stuff. If you know what you’re looking for, you can furnish your house for a very good price. My cousin once acquired a full set of barely used formal china for 8 for $85 (seriously it included the gravy boat).
Not having kids in a relationship/marriage is honestly one of the best equality “dupes” for women lol.
What if you get divorced and he goes on to have children at an older age but you can’t now because you are older? It’s never equal, sadly, unless he is sterilized when you go through menopause.

I love this! Thank you for sharing! Some of these I’ve never considered, but I will be looking into now. Also, I really liked your answer to that question about renting. I often feel stuck living in a small 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment with no backyard, and small patio… but you are right about having more flexibility to change our living situation than we would if we were locked into a mortgage. We currently pay month to month, so we could decide to move whenever we want, essentially. That would be a lot harder if we had a mortgage.
It's true. We own a house but we used to rent and I am not going to lie...renting was way easier on our finances. Sure, if you pay 3000 on rent (let's say) it could go to a mortgage but what people won't tell you is that you also have to get house insurance and pay property taxes and also have to pay for upkeep for your house. It all adds up $$$$ and if you live pay check to pay check...well it's very stressful. So not saying owning a house is all bad of course...but renting an apartment with a month to month lease isn't bad at all and you have a patio!🙂 Hope this helped!
did you have educated parents, or a mentor early in life who taught you really well, or are you just smarter than average? i'm very curious how you got to be this way. it seems to me most people just blindly make the assumption that things are not within their reach. not everybody seems to know that you can have dreams outside of what's expected of you, and actually turn those into attainable goals. do you think that's about personality, intellect, education, exposure, or what?
Spent the last year documenting my property managements neglect, unfortunately it took countless maintenance requests, unsafe living standards, frequent phone calls and emails, and now a lawsuit, but we are expecting to get the last years rent paid back to us, which will give us a nice safety net for our move in a few months from the us to Ireland. If you are struggling with a landlord that is breaking the law, stay consistent, make sure they are aware of the problems, and remind them frequently of things they are neglecting, and document everything, save every email, notice, and please god take regular photos of unsafe conditions. Then contact your local tenants organization, they can help organize other tenants your landlord is abusing(like if you live in apartments, or your landlord owns multiple properties) or help you find lawyers, or legal assistance. If your landlord does own many properties they are likely doing the same thing to other tenants, and at the end of the day “full-time” landlords are choosing a life in which they choose not to work and instead live off the income of the working class often taking most of their tenants income, and if they are providing substandard housing now, the only thing that has a chance of preventing them from continuing it indefinitely is taking legal and monetary action.
You can also call your city’s residential safety code enforcement department. A few cities, like mine, have a passive system: inspectors will only come out and look at a building if someone complains about it; other cities have active enforcement.

A speaker at my first job talked about women not negotiating salary and said we should just try it every time. I've negotiated two salaries since then (I do contract work that only lasts a few years) and am paid almost twice what the average salary for my position is. I had to work at it the first time, research the cost of living in some detail. But that's made it much easier to do since. It also made me really confident in turning down a job offer that was lowballing me. I knew in excruciating detail how unfair the pay they offered was and had a much easier time saying no to it.

i actually found hiring a cleaning person was not at all as expensive as i thought. i didn't have them do the whole house. just the kitchen and bathroom but it only cost like $150 plus tip so totally resonable

It's against the law for me to have an IRA/rIRA/401k (being disabled rocks), I'd love to hear some about some smaller ways of being able to do passive income work/investing. Like a full on beginner "here's how to [put in lots of effort to] trade stocks and keep things growing while being able to sell/save your profits" type of things. I see lots about set and forget, but I can't forget, and the options there ARE to invest and grow (like ABLE accounts) are small - until they're not.
As for outsourcing, something I love to remember is that I'm able to provide some ELSE a job and income by doing those things, which makes me much more apt to look for good help on that front. Love everything y'all do and cover, I've learned a lot over the years, keep it up!
You can invest in a mutual fund without having a retirement account (Ira, 401k). While you won't get the same tax benefits, you will still get the compound growth and passive income. 😊
I have been on the DL for over two decades. You are probably young, and not in a situation to have saved the kind of money to own property, but I was around 40 when I was put on the DL, and had scrabbled together (working sick for a decade) enough in my previous career to get in the property market at 35. Real estate is always a big risk, but at different times, I cleared a good profit selling in a high market and moving to a much cheaper place, and later rented that small property out and further downsized. It was not illegal for ME to reap passive income from property, according to the rules of my private employer's insurance and SSDI. In fact, I could have inherited a million dollars and not broken a rule, but I could not make $5 teaching a yoga class because that is a wage. Depending on the type of disability you're on, private, SSDI, or I'm guessing, the kind you get if you're disabled as a child, where you can ONLY accumulate assets in an ABLE account. If a wage. If you've been on the DL since you were a child, you are probably in a situation where the SS authorities are policing your assets. The laws for the disabled are nonsensical, keeping many poor or in financial jeopardy, even if they are lucky enough, like me, to have hung on in the middle class. If I hadn't been working in finance, I wouldn't have known what to do. Lawyers, I am afraid, are little or no help and cost a bundle. Much reform is needed in this area, and with millions of Americans partly or substantially disabled by Long Covid, America needs a big rethink. More on this, Chelsea, please! You had a great guest recently. 👍
@@christinagombar2622 well for me, I do work, but have state assistance for caregivers etc. I can't have over a certain amount of liquid assets before that assistance goes away, and suddenly I have to pay +$4k/mo for that stuff. Even with my very high paying job, it'd make me destitute again. So kind of like I said, "set and forget" methods become "set and watch like a hawk to move money into the ABLE account before you have too much." Can't own a house (other than my own residence, but I rent - I'm too poor for that lol) or a car outside of your primary vehicle. So this isn't disability insurance, SSI, or SSDI (but those have massive OTHER problems to contend with, like the feds as you say, ugh!).
Yes, would LOVE if we could talk more about how to safely, equitably, and smartly build up wealth and finances from a disability perspective, Chelsey! The country and world are simply not prepared for what the future of the mass disabling event that COVID was, is.
@@karynnotkaren693 this is just the type of thing I'm talking about! 😀 I think that a lot of financial planners/gurus/channels/whatever think all that stuff is too beginner to cover *in depth* but it'd be so helpful, especially with how overwhelming learning financial lingo/brokerage lingo can be.
@TheIrishAlchemist I have also been frustrated with the one size fits all financial advice. It's like they assume everyone starts out with a clean slate, no disability, no older relatives to support. Only in the past few years have personal finance journalists acknowledged that most college grads start life in major debt. There are many life situations, including immigrant status, that complicate things. Great for you that you can work and save in ABLE. Home ownership is sadly getting to be a distant dream for so many, and like college, may not be the best thing for everyone. Really live this site and the comments!
I love wine! Like I find it absolutely fascinating how it can change with how you consume it and what it is consumed with. I'm studying to become a sommelier just for fun! Like I don't want to use it to go back to restaurants, I want to build my own knowledge and enjoy wine for what it is. This made me feel so much better about this hobby of mine!

Lol, I guess in that case, you could say I'm a Bangali food connoisseur. It's one of my favorite things to cook, I tend to prefer it over the kind of Indian food you're most likely to find in an Indian restaurant in America, and Bangali restaurants are hard to come by, so I had to learn to make it myself. As a bonus, once you invest in all the spices you need, it's relatively cheap. Buy rice and lentils in bulk from Asian markets and the only perishable items are relatively inexpensive like garlic, ginger, onions, potatoes, and chilies. Whatever protein you want, if any is usually chicken, fish, or eggs. Vegetables aren't used in every dish but they're things like zucchini, cabbage, green beans, and spinach. The hardest things to find are veggies like bitter melon, ridge gourd, and bottle gourd but I don't feel the need to use them very often so it doesn't bother me. If you can figure out the logistics, it's great to bring to potlucks and share with friends because it's different from what most other people will bring and from what most Americans are used to eating in general so it stands out and you get lots of compliments. I get more compliments and requests for recipes from my Bangali food than from anything else I make. The only problem is that they often take me 1-3 hours to make, depending on the dish if I don't have help 😬

You are correct about the self worth variable. Perhaps I was to blame for not doing my research, but a couple months into working my new job I found their old job posting that was archived for my position set to a higher base pay than what they actually hired me for. I took a screen shot, along with the average salary for someone in my position with the same time x service, and confronted management / HR. They could have fired me for sure, and I was terrified to stir the pot of inevitable awkwardness thereafter, but my feelings of injustice overrode everthing else and decided to shoot my shot. In the end they did give me a raise and started paying me higher than what the job posting listed. I still feel slighted, and will eventually look elsewhere, but yeah oof that Glassdoor statement was so relatable.
I have never been more complemented on my clothing than when i started thrifting.

you'd be shocked at the kind of tablescapes they have at the dollar store. My mom used to go there for her party settings - often glass or ceramic! They were far from poor, my mom just said why spend money on expensive stuff when you can get the same stuff at the dollar store for 1$. Then again this was in 1995 so a dollar probably went much farther back then.
Thank you for helping to alleviate the guilt I feel for having my groceries delivered. It’s literally $6.95 to have a Kroger paid delivery driver to drop them off at the door. And I still beat myself up about it. It’s good to know Im not alone, and thank you for dispelling that ideology. ❤

For a large dinner table, keep a sheet of plywood, cut down a bit if you need. Put a blanket on your actual table, then the board, another blanket and your table cloth. Store it behind or under your bed when not in use.
My parents have an added table they set up in the living room for Christmas that’s made of plywood and has legs made of plumping pipes that screw into fixtures on the underside of the table. They store it on a pulley system from the garage rafters the rest of the year. It’s been a great solution that has lasted 20 years. Definitely feels more substantial than a card table.

Hellooo i hace a question, i make enough money to live confortable and have a few luxuries, but i dont like spending much, like mis friends Who earn the same as me, always go out to dinner to party,, but i Just dont like it, it is not worh it for me, am i wrong? I feel like i am isolating myself because i rather not go out with them if i Know they are going to a fancy place
I totally get this as I have this same situation. What works for me is not joining in all dinner parties, but joining some of it if it is associated with an event (promotion, birthday, etc) where you really want to go. This keeps your friends close and makes them respect your time. I feel this works for me, I still have my friends and I have my own time.
What may also help is asking your friends to hang out in a place you like for a change.

In many cases I don't negotiate because I respect other people's business and their needs. I want to pay them fairly for what they do. Thinking that you're entitled to a lifestyle that leaves other people underpaid just seems wrong to me.
She was talking about negotiating up for a better salary, not negotiating a small businesses owner down. She even said to pay people that you outsource work to a fair wage.

I still think that we have been raised into this "bargain" mentality which leads to a monopoly for big companies who can offer things cheaper, plus we are surrounded by things for which we do not pay the actual price they should cost if we paid for labour, sustainable material etc. I wasn't trying to criticise her, just trying to point out, how this mindset of trying to get things for cheap is problematic.

One thing to consider, even if you are young. Having a death plan. From writing down your final wishes to paying in advance at a funeral home (if you can afford it). Also, have a will! Better yet, set up a living trust. We have this notion that trusts are only for rich people, but they can be small too and it saves your family from having to go through a long legal process after your death. And yes, young people should set up wills and death plans too (and appoint a person to make medical decisions if you become incapacitated). This is doubly important if you are estranged from your family or have an abusive BF that might try to make decisions for you.

At this point I think I have a better chance understanding korean than financial talk. I've seen a lot of financial guru videos and I still don't understand stuff like 401K. Like what is that? How? Do we go to the bank for it? Why is it called that? If a poor person goes to a professional saying "I'd like to open a 401K", would they be taken seriously?

Let me just say though that being able to wear clothes that are old and “worn in” is a privileged experience if you are of a majority demographic. My wife is white and she can go to the grocery store dressed in pajamas on the weekend and still be treated with respect and actually maybe with an extra helping of sympathy (because certainly she must be an over worked mom of high value), but someone with a darker skin color or larger body or different accent would not be treated the same.
She is not talking about old or "worn in" clothes. She is talking about vintage or thrifted clothes that are in good or excellent condition. People donate beautiful clothing to thrift stores that are in great or new condition all the time. No one is advocating for wearing ratty clothes. She is advocating for wearing higher quality vintage clothes because they do not make clothes like they used to. Plus thrift stores are cheaper when you are on a budget.

I asked my father if he would invest $1M in the financial market. He said no, that I should treat the $1M as if it were an army. When you invest that money, it's the same as sending it to Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and Syria. There, those soldiers will die, as will your investments, so it is preferable to keep your troops and money at home, safe and sound for when you really need them. And try not to require them as frequently. You should be fine after that.
LOL. The truth is that if the soldiers are properly equipped and given the necessary information, the mission will be successful, and the same is true for your investment. If you use the right strategy, you can outperform the market and make a lot of money. That is the textbook definition of a fiduciary investment-advisor.

You say that Glassdoor has that data but I'm in the bio world and the amount listed is wildly variable as jobs are highly varied. I came into the work force at the beginning of the recession in a low jobs field and so I've been trained to grovel for jobs. Finally asked for what Glassdoor said I was probably worth only to find out I am WAY underpaid STILL in the area with a high bio job market. It will be probably a few more years before I can try to get another job and seriously negiotiate something near what I'm worth. I can ask for a raise but i haven't been here long enough for that and from what people say they aren't likely to give it.

Yes to hosting. I just attended a kid’s birthday party at a large venue set up like a banquet with catering, professional entertainers, generous goody bags, etc. In contrast my own kid had a party in our backyard. I had borrowed a ton of pirate decorations and costume pieces and props. The kids played pirates and had a blast.

I get your idea, however what you are saying is still wrong. I like cleaning as well as do other stuff lol, so why should I limit myself on working in that domaine, when I have plenty of opportunity at home to do so and earn my money with something else? Your initial idea is good, but as long as partners are equally valued and split the whole package of workload (income, household,etc) in a fair way everything is fine. Also your comment gives a bit the vibe that you think „passion“ & „job“ are directly linked, which is not true….
