    The best zero waste tip is: use what you have on hand until you can't no more, and that is very true for the plastic containers you already have. Once they fall apart, you can get new ones. I buy all my glass containers second-hand, or simply reuse glass jars I get with product (for example, Adam's PB sells a large size in a super useful jar).

      My mom reuses peanut butter jars as storage for foods she dehydrates, and old yogurt containers for bulk items or when we pick berries. It just makes sense.

    Some baby related clothes that you can save on besides baby clothes are maternity clothes. When I was pregnant with my second child, 10 years after my first child, I borrowed maternity clothes from a friend after her first child. I added a few items to that wardrobe and then gave all of those clothes back to my friend for her second pregnancy. The beauty is we weren’t exactly the same size but with the flexibility of maternity clothes we were able to wear the same set of clothes. It saved us both a lot of money.

    For brides who want to own their dress - consider sample sales!
    Living in NYC, I went to Kleinfeld and walked out same-day with my wedding dress: a sample from their back closet. It was on a steep discount and I was able to get a few inexpensive alterations done by a tailor in the city. I loved the lightening efficiency while still preserving the wedding dress experience with my people.

    • @samanthasmith9472
      @samanthasmith9472 Před rokem +25

      Second this! I bought a sample gown from a charity that benefits battered women and children that gets their dresses from Kleinfeld’s and similar places. I paid $260 (including tax) for a $3400 dress and then spent $180 on alterations. I then donated my dress to a different cause after the wedding, since the one I bought my dress from doesn’t do secondhand. Secondhand dresses are also an option! There is a caveat with sample gowns because most fit a street size 4-6, so it’s not necessarily a size-inclusive option.

    As someone who loved her microblading at first but hate how it looks now (5 years later), this is NOT the cheaper option. You have to get it touched up every 1.5-2 years and it's usually the same price as the initial appointment. I was still spending just as much, if not more, on my eyebrows with mircoblading than without. Also, because they are a surface tattoo they are not permanent and the ink can change colors over time.

      I don't think we have those in Canada, or else that would have been a much better way to get my period underwear (I totally recommend Aisle BTW, their reusable products are fantastic and haven't had any leaks yet, plus way more comfy and healthy than the plastic junk they put in most pads). I should look into that when I ask about a new credit card (with rewards points rather than 0.5% back), because I have joint issues that cause me to need physio and alternative appointments more often and insurance doesn't cover all of it. Even when I was getting student discounts it adds up, and I could use anything left over on organic tampons since I tend to use those when I travel or swim.

    I'm so happy you advocated for microblading! As a woman who used to spend money and a lot of time on eyebrow makeup and tinting treatments (that are supposed to last at least a week and never do) microblading really leveled up my day to day beauty routine and was cost effective. My favorite thing is getting complements on my brows because many people assume they're either shaped super well or I have great makeup game.
    I think the key thing is to be sure that you have found the right artist to do the job (listens to your goals and provides advice and recommendations based on your skin health) and since it falls under the 'permanent makeup' category, it's important to ensure the inked brow shape fits your face/natural brow shape to minimize your at-home maintenance.
    Also skin tone should be a factor, I've heard many people complain that when it fades, or they stop treatment, that it leaves behind an orange or purple tint and they then have to use brow makeup to cover it. So far I haven't experienced that yet, but I do have medium/darker skin so it's likely not as noticeable compared to paler/light skin tones.

    As a nerd I got damn lucky for a lot of expenses for my event, and used a lot of my own cosplay props and figurines as table décor! My dress (a stunning gauzy white, stone and flower-caked confection of fabulousity) was a killer deal at Nordstrom Rack for about $200 because it had several missing flowers and stones that you only noticed under heavy scrutiny, and was technically a prom dress. I've since used it to cosplay from Sailor Moon once or twice, too!
    Remember, prom and Quinceañera gowns also come in white and can be rented/found for less.

    • @joylox

      That's a great idea! I cosplay too and since I make all my own stuff, I plan to make my outfit. Then again, materials are probably still going to cost over $100 since some of my cosplay fabrics have come pretty close to it. My partner and I are traditional in some ways and not in others and only in the stage of talking about it, but we want to DIY stuff. I want a blue jumpsuit (possibly with a removable skirt overlay) and there'd be no way to get anything like that without making it. I have no idea how much my sewing machine repairs will cost, but I'm on the lookout for fabrics in the discount piles and thrift stores. Plus, with any leftovers if I do order fabric online, it can be used in decor, matching ties for the men, or any assortment of fabric accessories. I'm more worried about my partner's suit as he'd need it tailored, and I'm not confident enough to work with suits as with flowy fabrics, it's easy to hide any mistakes.

I’ve shopped at the *massive* Rhea Lana consignment sale near me (and there’s actually 3 or 4 in my city) twice a year since before my first kid was born! He’s 4 now and have gotten probably 90% of his clothes there every season, spending less than $500 a year and averaging about $3 per item! Especially recommend for babies (cuz poop) and boys (cuz dirt). If you have a Rhea Lana in your area - GO! I will say, this last sale, just 2 weeks ago, looking for 4T boys clothes, it’s going to get trickier because boys are SO ROUGH on their clothes, but it’s been SO WORTH IT! My wedding isn't til next month, but yeah, not buying a wedding dress is one of the best financial decisions I've made. I'm wearing my mom's dress with minor alterations (done for free by a family member) and got a $35 dress to wear for the party afterward. It seems crazy to me to pay so much for a dress you'll wear one day out of your life, and probably not even for all of the day - some of the dresses I see out there, it seems like you can hardly move in them, let alone eat or dance. Renting seems like a great option too.
    My mom did keep that dress in a sealed box in her closet for decades, but she had it made by a theatrical costumer from fabric she purchased herself. Didn't cost all that much.

Her wedding cakes were cheesecakes from the grocery down the street from her church (they were ordered plain but the bakery ladies put some white piping and white flowers on them, gratis), she picked out a simple flower arrangement and asked extended family to get together that morning to put the arrangements together, the luncheon was a cold cut and salad buffet (everything from the regular grocery), there was no alcohol, and other things I don't remember. She saved more than enough to pay for her dress. I guess it's all about managing expectations and priorities.
    To save her bridesmaids money she picked out a tea length dress from a rental place and they could wear whatever white strappy sandals they wanted, the groomsmen wore grey business style suits, also rented.

I actually made the cake with a friend, we all wore thrifted clothes or things from an outlet store as long as it was the same colour scheme, and someone nearby picked wildflowers that my aunt arranged with some discount roses from a grocery store. I can't remember what the food was, but we'd used a campground with a beach, so the wedding was on the sand, and then we used the smaller of the two camp kitchens to prepare the food in and had a picnic. I know second weddings are usually less fancy though, so people weren't expecting anything huge. That being said, knowing the right people can help, like I can sew, I know some good photographers, and someone at my church has made professional level cakes for weddings before, so when the time comes for me, I plan to ask those connections I have.

    Honestly the fancy clothes for babies are the easiest ones to find used, typically because the baby only wore it once or not at all before they grow out of it. When I got hand me downs for my daughter they were almost entirely dresses, cause those were the clothes that were still in good shape.

    For the wedding dress point. I got super lucky and am able to wear my grandmother’s dress which my mom also wore! The only alterations I needed to make where minimal and so that the dress fit me (brought up the waste and let out the chest area a tad) . The alterations cost about $75. I feel so lucky to be able to save that money and be the 3rd generation to wear that dress :)

      Me, who is spending about that much on sewing machine repairs to make my own... I didn't realize how expensive things were! All my sewing machines are used, passed down from family, but I have no idea how to service them beyond a certain point and it's $50+ for maintenance. I am glad that I know how to sew, because I've saved so much on other clothes. I think my high school grad dress was $50 for the fabric and pattern, and lately I've been into making shirts and shorts out of old sheets which saves a lot, so at least I get my money's worth out of the sewing machines.

    I got lucky with my wedding gown, I bought the sample. It was $1,000 which is more than I ever imagined spending... which was a HUGE discount from the actual price of the dress 🤷‍♀️ but I also had very limited expenses for my wedding and it was important to me to feel beautiful. I also had a very small wedding, which I paid for the lodging of my guests for the whole weekend as well as our reception. At the time I had very limited education about money, but I still didn't go into debt for my wedding. That's a big accomplishment for my past with finances 😬

    Wedding gowns don't have to be expensive. There are TONS of affordably priced wedding dresses now and some websites like Azazie and Cocomelody can send a sample for you to try on at home and see the quality before you buy. Also, don't forget that an ivory colored formal gown can be used for a wedding dress. Most large department stores (Macy's, Nordstrom, Saks, etc.) carry lots of options and if you can wait for a sale to really save some $$$. Brands like Mac Duggal make gowns that can easily pass as a wedding dress but cost WAY less.

      Same! My Etsy wedding dress was about $350, and then I had about $300 worth of tailoring done to it to get it fitting like a glove (tough to do when the dressmaker doesn't get to measure you in person). And I one hundred percent plan to wear mine again. My husband and I both independently had the idea that on "big" anniversaries, we should go back to where we married and take some anniversary photos in our original wedding clothes. We're looking forward to it!

    I'm curious to hear the pros and cons of each. I didn't think of an HSA as a dedicated savings account bucket for health expenses, but it makes a lot of sense. Now I'm wondering if the lower deductible was the right choice..

    I tried renting a wedding dress but there really was such limited options and none in my size so it wasn’t really an option. On hindsight, I wish I bought my wedding dress second hand to save money. Also, brides who are doing an outdoor wedding keep in mind your dress may get dirty. Ended up paying almost the same amount of my wedding dress on just dry cleaning after to get the stains out (it had rained the day previous )

    • @joylox
      @joylox Před rokem

      Honestly, when it comes to cleaning, the best money saving tip I've learned is to use Sunlight bar soap. It's a tried and true stain remover passed down from generations of mothers teaching their daughters how to remove period stains, and if you get the stain before it dries, it's so easy to use. I just use a dollar store nail brush or sponge, get it wet, rub it on the soap, and rub it on the stain. It's removed grass, blood, blueberries, and even acrylic paint!
      My boyfriend and I have been talking about doing an outdoor event, but I plan to wear blue and sew my own thing, so I won't feel as bad if I end up repurposing it into something more casual later. If I have to cut off the bottom due to stains, I could easily hem it into a romper or something fun like that.

    I got microblading and while I will say that I really like the results, it's not better financially. You'll spend let's say, $5-30 on an eyebrow product every few months. That's still cheaper than $550 every couple years. And it's not exactly semi permanent; you're still causing trauma to the skin and it doesn't really disappear completely.
    Most people who have had microblading done still fill in their brows at least from time to time, just maybe not everyday. It doesn't eliminate your use of eyebrow products. If anything, the best thing about microblading is that it saves you time on a day to day basis.

      Reducing taxable income is really the primary benefit. Can’t remember the exact calculation, but for every $1 you spend, you have to earn $1.20 (depending on your tax bracket). With the FSA, you get to keep the entire $1.20, but you can only spend it on healthcare.
      My FSA also lets you put some of that money into commuting expenses. I charge up my MetroCard and never have to worry about leaving money on the table.
