I once got a $500 ticket. I went to court to try and fight it or at least get it reduced. Judge wouldnt reduce it but she said I could so 10 hours of community service and shed lower it to $250. I took it! She told me “ why don’t you just pay it off right now and be done with it?!” I didn’t tell her this but I took it because I made $10 an hour and id have to work 25+ hrs in order to pay it off. Community service was pretty much paying me $25 an hour 🤷🏻‍♀️

Excuse me. Did I hear/read it correctly that some people had to pay "room and board" fees for being in jail? For being in jail? In jail? What kind of absurd nonsense is that? As if being in jail were spending time at a spa. I, of course, foolishly thought such rules disappeared with the end of the Victorian era or only existed in third world countries or under totalitarian regimes. And, what are the "fees" that are being charged for a misdemeanor. How can it possibly cost $390 to collect a $100 fine as given in the California red light example? I was aware of the other issues -- school system inequality, bank fees (also far out of proportion to the actual costs involved), etc. But the insanity of charging people for being in jail is definitely too, too Dickensian to be allowed in the U.S. in 2022.

Having a degree in business administration and job experience as a restaurant cashier). The reason I constantly hear for why is because the person with the degree doesn't have enough job experience in said degree, even when the job itself doesn't require that particular degree - only that the applicant has # years experience doing these particular tasks within the job's scope.

Then they're confronted with the massive medical bill with no way to pay it. That's essentially what happened to my parents. That said, the $20 pair of shoes has its purpose. I have an expensive pair of Brookes walking shoes I use for walking. I have a $20 pair of "uniform shoes" from Academy sports I use in the gym. Turns out that walking shoes aren't suitable for weight lifting. The cheaper flatter rubber of the $20 shoes lets me balance better while doing dead lifts and squats than the comfortable but squishy $140 running shoes. The $20 shoes will last a lot longer since they only get worn a few hours a week, whereas I've got to replace the stupidly expensive running shoes every 6-8 months because the soft tread wears out fast.

I hate Walmart footwear. It's almost always made cheaply. Sometimes you find a decent-ish pair at a thrift store. Most of the shoes at my local thrift stores charge $8-16 for their shoes. In my opinion, that's too high for a pair of used shoes. The other tough thing is that you're not guaranteed your size at a thrift. I've always struggled finding my shoe size at thrift stores. I can't really afford to spend $40+ on a nice pair of shoes, so I try to either find stuff on sale online or snatch them when I can find them at thrift stores.

I've long known that the criminal "justice" system is pay-to-play, but even as a Missouri resident, I had no clue that we charged prisoners room and board. That is insane. I get that jails and prison s are expensive to run, but the answer is not to charge petty "criminals" room and board. The answer is to incarcerate fewer people.

It’s incredible how many jobs must be in office simply because other organizations refuse to modernize. I’m currently in an hr/payroll position and the only reason I have to go into office is because the state DOL and IRS insist on mail communications. Many of my team members get to be remote because I scan their mail to them. Being lower on the totem pole/income level requires I go into office even though it costs hundreds per month to commute by train. I bet if we required companies to justify why employees must work in person, they’d be able to do it for the vast majority of “lower” team members and the reason wouldn’t even be internal.

Here's a fun one. The cars poor folk can afford often require more upkeep and many rental properties forbid you from doing your own car maintinance. Even for me, not poor, I have to spend more on vehicle maintinance because I am not allowed to do it myself. Occassionally I'll find an empty shopping center parking lot and try to fit in an oil change before security shows up, it does save about 50% the cost of an oil change. O2 Sensor needs replaced? $100 part that you can easily do yourself, but if you get caught by your landlords prowlers you gotta find a new place, so you spend $300 to have it done at a shop. Has it been 4 months and you need to rotate your tires? Again, take it to a shop and eat the $200.
Landlords take this beyond car maintinance though, i've been sited for tuning up my bicycle on my patio before. Another example is landlords in my area have banned chest freezers on your patio, even though you likely don't have room inside your apartment for a chest freezer. Chest freezers allow you to buy in bulk and do food prep, things that can save quite a bit of money. You're stuck buying low volume higher price-per-oz food.
There's a lot of little things that increase the base cost of living at the lower end.

For anyone looking for a decent paying job with low barriers to entry, you might try caregiving jobs, like being a nanny. Nannies need no experience or college, but taking only 1 community college class (free if you’re low income) makes you look like a fantastic choice. Live-in jobs include room and board. If you need references try your hs teachers or cousin you babysat for. Families often look specifically for men to help with disabled children or elderly, since heavy lifting could be involved, but many men are nannies, too. Average wage (CA): $20/hr. If you join an agency $30/hr + benefits. It won’t work for everyone, but if you like children it is fun and extremely rewarding. I’ve been a nanny since I graduated high school and I absolutely love it.

Very true. Federal Student loans have a lot of benefits that private loans don't have. The possible $10,000 to $20,000 forgiveness being just one. There is also public service loan forgiveness, income based repayment, and forgiveness after 20-25 years on income based repayment. There is also supposed to be a new repayment plan in the works that stops interest accruing with on time payments.

    (1) I'm torn on lotteries. Everybody puts $1 in the pool. A good cause gets $5 million, one lucky person gets $3 million. But the stats on the poor playing the lottery is terrifying.
    (2) we don't charge to be jailed in my state. The good news is Zoom has dramatically decreased failures to appear. (Appearing in person is always an option).
    (3) totally agree fines and fees doesn't work well. My friend on disability got a $200 speeding ticket (10 over). That's like 1/4 of her income. For other people, it's just the cost of driving the speed of traffic. North Dakota charges $50. A very affordable surcharge to go faster. That said having the whole family on their with their third shoplifting charge is frustrating. They just don't care. And no they didn't accidentally, on camera, take a tag off one item and put it on a different item. They didn't forget they were walking out in 2 or 3 pairs of jeans.
    (4) oh god I can't skip ad on a 3 min Christian recruitment ad while typing a comment.
    (5) yeah school funding is messed up. Although some of that is the family. But time is money. People with money have more time to read and help kids with math, and in those families education is a given. No one talks about graduating from high school because the mere idea of not graduating is absurd.
    (6) Tracking kids starting in middle school is idiocy.
    (7) Jobs - don't forget it's not what you know, it's who you know. Having a mother as a lawyer helped me get jobs. Some directly, some just because I was comfortable socializing with them.
    (8) I think you underplayed disposable consumer products. But you talk about those regularly.
    (9) these days a college degree is proof you are self motivate venough to show up. But it's an expensive way to do that.
    (10) how do you feel about massive ad spends for gambling sites during college and pro sports now?
    (11) Finally you skipped a huge trap. Means testing is a cliff. Make $2000 more a year? You go from free medical care to $8,000 a year premiums and costs due to needing insulin. (Although the ACA made this bettter, a healthy man can get affordable insurance now - obviously don't have kids or get pregnant. But that's always true.)
Want to get a job on disability? If your savings get above $2000, you lose it for a minimum 2 years. Going back to work is dangerous because if it doesn't work out, you are worse off than having never worked.

Very nice and well thought out points. Though to be fair the speed limit from Jamestown to Bismarck is 75, so to be going over that significantly you need to be moving FAST, and even if you crash it's not like your going to run into anything except maybe a wheat field ;). As for the education system, yes there is a big difference in just basic access with parents. Rich parents can afford to take the day off to come get their sick kid. They can afford a tutor. They can afford the accredited or Montessori daycare and preschool's, the science camps, and extra sports that allow a child to explore their interests, and pursue potential career paths long before college. This means less time spent jumping from major to major, it means picking the "best" school for your chosen career to start. It means making those connections early, not being hindered by "that college is too far away for you to live rent free at home. We need you here to help take care of the family." It means graduating debt free, and having built up the positive study habits bc as a child you didn't just have books, you had focused attention to teach you HOW to study. The rich kid was given all the building blocks, and able to stack them in stairs to a better future, while the poor kid was given none and criticized for not reaching the same level, and becoming a parent that has few to no blocks to give their own kid.

I don't think they had AP or Honors classes back when I was in school. We did have college prep courses, that were probably the precursor to these. You didn't just need to be smart to get in--I was smart. You needed to be rich enough to afford college, in the advisor's eyes. I never had that. They judged me, and I was directed to general classes, with no option for the courses I'd need for college.
When I went to college, I spent my first year taking remedial classes I should have had in high school. My English 101 teacher told me my grammar was atrocious--though I was an A/B student in my high school English classes. I was two years behind in math, and took a combination course to catch up. I missed science entirely in high school, since both science classes I had in high school were taught by inadequate teachers. Biology was taught by a woman pushing retirement, who insisted we spend 9 weeks memorizing the state flowers! Physics was taught by the football coach, who came in, propped his feet on the desk, drank coffee, and talked with the football players gathered around his desk. He taught NOTHING! We were self-taught, and he'd administer tests when we asked.
Taking the extra year or two for college is bad enough with the expense of 5/6 years vs 4. But it's even worse when you consider that it puts you further behind in career, savings, marriage, and family goals.

So there was this other school that got a shiny new building, literally the fanciest I’ve EVER seen and it’s HUGE, almost comically so. The old building was deemed unsuitable for continued use, and so was slated for demolition. That is, until the decided it would be fine for my daughter’s school. Her school was moved into a building that was literally supposed to be torn down. Of course the district claimed these five schools for NEW buildings….
The new school building is on the same grounds as the old school, only the track and all the fields and land are for exclusive use of the new building’s kids. My daughter’s school gets to see what those other kids got.

Oh! Another example of fees are the ones tacked on to products like insurance because of “poor credit history” since that’s somehow an indicator of “increased risk”. For example, if an individual has a clean driving and loss history, their auto policy premium with good credit versus poor credit can be the difference of *hundreds* of dollars. There’s so many uninsured people on the roads because they simply can’t afford the insurance but live in cities where not having a car isn’t an option. And if they have insurance they can’t afford, allowing it to lapse or not paying that insurance premium will negatively impact credit too. It’s an unending cycle.

For the lottery what they're really selling is hope. People can't afford a big spend, but maybe that $20 ticket, they can. It's a dream, even if an unrealistic one, that some magical thing will happen and then you'll be rich and able to escape this crushing system of poverty. Those who are poor are often additionally disadvantaged by receiving worse education, less nutritional food, and the constant stress of not knowing if you'll have food/shelter for tomorrow. This stress sends your amygdala into overdrive, and results in your prefrontal cortex not developing well, or being constantly overridden bc of immediate needs. It's a well known fact that you're chance of winning the lottery is basically none, but if you put that $20/week into savings you'd have a good chunk later. But here's the insidious thing. The poor person's brain literally CAN'T thing that far ahead. The long term planning done by the prefrontal cortex is either shut down bc "survival mode", or was poorly developed bc well "years of survivor mode". So what you're left with is a person who doesn't just have the lack of resources to get themselves out, and a system that demands they stay in, but the literal mental capacity to see potential escapes taken away from them before they can even walk. The rich see them as stupid fools, but honestly it's not a choice when you're own brain isn't able to help you out bc your constantly in survival mode. Lottery preys on this inability to realize even if you win your statistically not going to be happier after about a year, and your 10x more likely to be murdered by your own family. It prey's not on a person's greed, but on their desperation for hope. And when a person's only realistic way out of poverty is the equivalent of finding a magic gene, there is something deeply wrong with our society.

I had a parking ticket right before I moved, and several times before I moved, I logged on to pay it, but the ticket number kept appearing as not in their system. During the hectic time of the move I forgot about the ticket. Years later, and reregistering my car twice since that ticket, I was applying for a job, and on the background check it showed I had a warrant for my arrest. The parking ticket was over $1,500; from $25!!!! I had to take care of it quick, so I could get that job. They ended up dismissing the whole thing, because I still had pictures on my cloud of how I was parked and I did have a visible permit on my car at the time and the receipt for the permit too. However, for a full dismissal from my record I had to give a DNA Sample and pay the fee of $75 to collect it. This was minor and cause all kinds of issues. I could not imagine having a real issue to deal with.

My high school didn't even have IB classes and the AP classes were a joke. I always thought IB classes were for fancy rich kids. 😅 it was much smarter at my school to do dual enrollment and take some of the community college courses during high school so you completed your AA when you graduated high school. Saved $ and time for a lot of ppl and I wish I had done it, but, of course, that was looked at as the route for people who weren't "smart" enough for AP (meanwhile I tested into AP and failed every AP exam I took sooooooo). It was all dumb.

    • @snowangelnc
      @snowangelnc Před rokem +4

Somebody mentioned on another comment the idea of making the fines proportional to household income. It makes sense. As it is now many rich people could pay the standard fine and forget the whole thing happened five minutes after sending in the payment. Not only is it unfair to the poor, it also defeats the whole purpose of a fine as a deterrent in the first place. Now, if the fines were set so that they'd sting more evenly no matter what a person's income level, not only would it make it more fair across the board, it would have the added bonus of generating a lot more revenue from those that can best afford it. And if the rich start saying that it's not fair that they'd have to pay thousands for a simple traffic ticket, then the answer would just be that they'd just have to follow the law then, just the same as somebody that would have to miss out on rent, groceries, or medication if they had to pay a $300 fine.

Big one in the UK.... you have to pay more for your energy bills because you have to pre-pay with a card or key at a higher unit rate than people who can afford to pay monthly via direct debit at an amount fixed by the energy retailer. Yes, you have to do the pre-pay because you are probably living in a private rental and the pre-pay meter was in there before you moved in.

To dovetail, another way the poor are punished for their lack of means is in their food options within their locale. Similar to economic resources within a community used provide for schools on a massively sliding scale, lower income communities tend to draw lower quality grocery stores (if any) and lower quality restaurants (i.e. fast food). While often discussed as far as "food deserts," and the health costs over poor quality food for what is available, what often gets overlooked are the surrounding community growth benefits these businesses provide within a community. This particular lack of growth and support also "feeds" (pun intended) the same cycle of poverty, by encouraging higher quality businesses in this vein to stay away from these poorer communities.

I know the topic is about the US but trust me, seems like we're all living the same life. This ain't that different from the life we have here in the third world 🥺🤧. I worked as a customer service rep for a well known bank in the US a few years ago and each time people had an overdraft the bank would charge them $34. The account users would contact us requesting the refund of the fee which I was more than happy to waive for them however management demanded us to convince people why the charge was "valid" and deny every request for a refund. Just in case of EXTREME pushback, we might be able to return their money as long as we didn't go over the cap management would give us on a monthly basis, anything over it would be discounted from our paycheck. So yeah, that sucked. We were being yelled and insulted over the phone and even though that feels horrible, i can't blame them. We were limited as to what we could do. My colleagues and I were being penalized for trying to help people. Not fair 🥺

I have just now, after fighting this same issue for literally 6 years, been able to start seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. The only way this happened is I was able to borrow money from a family member to hire an attorney. Thousands of dollars later, I'm finally almost able to drive again, either by the end of this year or the next. (Oh, and drugs or alcohol were NEVER a part of why I had been arrested. Just never had my license and was forced to drive to daily events.)

Luckily, I’m at a point in my life where im less avoidant with things like this and actually have a savings that allowed me to pay it in full, but I couldn’t help but think about how devastating this fine would have been to me just five years ago. Yes, I should not have run a red light, but $293? Yes, you can do traffic school but that comes with it’s own fees. It’s predatory.

I live in Australia. I know what it’s like to have absolutely nothing, and I also know what it’s like to have a decent/good amount of money.
I can absolutely say with confidence, that the system rewards money with money.
There are ALLOT of aspects of your life that become ALLOT easier when you ‘have’ money - and those aspects becoming ‘easier’ make it ‘easier’ to accumulate more and more money. It’s like a toxic domino effect.
What I find so disappointing is the way many people who where born into advantageous positions of wealth view the poor. As you said, there is a common conception that ALL poor people are ‘lazy’.
As a society, we need to show a higher level of emotional intelligence and understand the complexity of issues and circumstances that can turn (or keep) someone locked inside of a lower income bracket.

    1. Poor people can't buy some items in normal packages so there's smaller packages version called satchets. These satchets are cheaper however if they are compared with normal packages for same content amount, they are actually more expensive. IOW buying satchets is actually more costly.
    2. Poor people can't afford water for their houses so they buy water from local vendors. Just like the above, the cost comparison for this water vs water from water companies is more expensive. To make matters worse, water from the former has worse quality than the latter.

Does America have credit unions that are fairer in terms of monthly charges than “big banks”? If so that is certainly something you should promote. In addition to being slightly harder to access another disadvantage of online banks is that they require a (marginally) higher amount of effort and financial education to use than brick and mortar locations. I have encouraged some of my friends to open online bank accounts who didn’t want to and I later realized they weren’t great fits for online banking. I think credit unions are the happy medium. They have physical branches and will give one a basic banking package for no or minimal fee.
