      I'm a bigger night owl than Chelsea described (going to bed between 1-2am and waking up between 9-10am would be a dream for me lol), and I agree that does make things a bit less productive in life. I will say tho at least three are improvements in technologies that help people like us out in mitigating that. Little things like online banking (I can't remember the last time I've stepped into a bank), online shopping, grocery delivery, online tax prep, working from home, etc.
      I still desire to make myself into more of a morning person tho, every day is a new battle!

      I feel you on this. I actually prefer to sleep in the daylight. I used to feel ashamed of this but then I learned some of us descend from night watchmen. We would have been the people who took watch over the village at night. It’s hard because the world doesn’t operate for our natural body rhythms but I don’t feel bad about it anymore. Most of my family are night owls and we aren’t lazy. We have jobs and we work hard, we just prefer to do it later in the day, even late at night.

    This is exactly what I needed to hear at this point in time. I have been following TFD since my early teens and this is my first time commenting. I graduated college and entered my first corporate job this year. It was possible for me to remain ahead of the curve without needing to put real effort into it so far but I am finally starting to see that I can't just 'wing it' forever. Realizing that I relate to Chelsea's old self to a horrifying degree was the wake up call I needed. I’m an introvert with ADHD, but I didn’t know I had ADHD until a little over a year ago. I just thought I was lazy, stupid, unmotivated, and just not capable of achieving the things I wanted. Turns out there’s a reason for that, and I can fix it.
    While I do have neurological reasons that make life a little harder, I have learned to find the right supports (meds and therapy and a LOT of self acceptance) that help my mind catch up with reality. I love the way you phrased that - our mental perception needs to catch up with reality. I’m becoming a morning person, I’m more realistic with what I can do with my time, and I’m less afraid of setting goals. I do think I am still type B, in the sense that I’m not motivated by external rewards, but rather I am motivated by my own expectations of myself. Instead of wanting to be the best among everyone else, I just want to be the best I imagine myself to be. I think just having that awareness has made a major impact on my quality of life.

      Congrats! I have my first appointment with an ADHD specialist in a couple weeks, but I might also have autism so idk. I was wondering, if you feel comfortable sharing, what did you realistically learn in therapy for ADHD? I have some bias against therapy from going undiagnosed for so long and having multiple experiences with practitioners that gave unhelpful advice.

    • @allisonbuettner3934
      @allisonbuettner3934 Před 2 lety +7

      @@amentrison2794 I had been going for several years as needed, but in therapy leading up to and after my diagnosis, I learned not to judge my thoughts and feelings. I’m a very logical person but I also feel things strongly, and often I’m too hard on myself. I’m working on being neutral about things instead of thinking “wow, you’re stupid, why didn’t you already know this?” or “you’re so lazy, why can’t you just fold your laundry?” now I say to myself, “here’s a chance to learn something” or “it’s just laundry, I will get around to it.”
      I’m also learning how to work with my strengths and not keep trying to force a square peg into a round hole. If something just is not working for me, like a morning routine, I can just change it. I don’t have to mask my symptoms and try to be like someone else when my brain is different. I also lean in to when my brain wants to hyper-focus, it can be a strength when applied to something I am interested in!

      Fellow ADHDer working on self (radical) acceptance and being realistic with my time and being my best self! I don't know why I keep trying to be *that* person who finishes 25 important tasks a day. 100% agree that my own expectations of myself are a main motivator (or a dismotivator if they're too unrealistic). Also with C/DBT just giving myself consistent affirmations no matter what I got done is becoming rewarding. I don't fail I simply did my best for *that* day given where I am in my journey

      I’ve noticed that my “i suck at math” attitude stems from math class ptsd 💀 like it wasn’t the easiest subject for me and teachers didn’t really spend lots of time individually w students to help them progress so i felt like i fell behind and was just somehow moving along w the rest of my class.
      Come university and I have to take calculus and statistics for my major. I held off calculus till my senior year. Stats was incredibly fun and I was somehow? Great at it. I memorized the formulas and everything because I attributed everything to the stuff I was learning for my major. It wasn’t “math” class.
      When it was time for calc, I fucking sucked horrible on the first time. Then i buckled down and I was actually doing well!! It was so weird because growing up i always thought “u just suck at math” when it’s like “no u just need someone to explain it in a more clear and relatable way for you”

As I have grown into my late twenties, I am really discovering a part of myself with agency - organised, accountable, no longer procrastinating. It is a virtuous cycle where I feel much more confident in dealing with the world, therefore less avoidant. I think our routines and adaptations to our environment shape us much more than is acknowledged. It really helps to know how different your life and behavior used to be. It’s so easy to just assume that everyone with their life seemingly together has always been that way, but knowing it’s not the case for every one gives me hope that people can change when they want to and try

    I'd love if you shared your wardrobe change-over spreadsheet! Also proud to say I've been a TFD follower since the early days (not since the Tumblr-era but around the time Complexly gave it a boost). I continue to be in awe of your (very sustainable) growth and willingness to change and I can't wait to see what TFD becomes in the next few years

I’m fascinated by the idea of this process. Also, in the last video you mentioned using an RSS feed to get updates on new listings. Please show me the way ma’am. I’m loving these process ideas!

    Love this! I became a runner by slowly challenging the notion that I wasn't a runner by slowly building up the amount I ran. Did I feel like a runner when I only ran for 20 seconds at a time? Not really, but by intentionally working towards that goal I was able to turn myself into a runner. It's so tempting to just stick with what feels natural or easy, but that's not how we grow.

    • @meaganalexander2088
      @meaganalexander2088 Před 8 měsíci

      Same!! I no longer say that I could never be a runner, because by definition, a runner is someone who runs! 😂 Am I the best? No. Am I really fast? Uhhh no. But am I making steady progress? Absolutely :) when we look at energy attributed towards our goals as an investment for the future instead of food for motivation, we trick our brains into believing we can already do the thing. Why would I need to “find” the motivation if I already know inside that I am more than capable of accomplishing it with time? We’ve got this. 🙌🏼

A lot more than my limiting beliefs lead me to think! Thank you for this video and sharing! I fractured my foot the other day(a bad fall) and I was like, I hate sitting stiiiiill but then I realized I could catch up on TFD!!!! Helps me realize that the boot is temporary, it could be worse, and this is literally an excuse to consume lots of media.
