  • Upgrading the suspension on my campervan after my recent adventures in the Spanish desert was a high priority for me, having the correctly rated suspension for a more comfortable ride means my van and everything inside will last much longer as it's not been rattled to bits.

    Hi John thanks for another informative video, can you give any info on the extra weight the double leaf springs are compared to the single leafs, it’s a mod i’m considering but not sure if it’ll put me over weight, any help appreciated, thanks

    Hi John me again my son is a 2nd year apprentice van tec at Mercedes, this is a common fault. Yes, move the keep back but also, if you remove the glove box and warm it gently with a heat gun, don’t burn it and just reshape it. Just keep warm it up, bending it warm it up, bend it and you’ll get a perfect fit a bit of patience required.👍

    Nice work on the campervan,
    Have you ever checked you van with an OBD2 Scanner?
    I use a Battery Monitor BM2 device to monitor the battery,
    Love that ratchet & Lanoguard. Sweet Idea...
    Less pothole noise and bumps is always a good thing,
    Good luck in your cycle challange.

    Cue armchair experts (without vans) saying you’ve done it wrong. I’m currently feeling that maintenance is overrated. I went out to measure the windscreen wipers on my van and as soon as the tape measure came out it started pouring with rain. Which stopped as soon as I went inside and put a coat on. I bought new wiper blades and fitted them okay. The second deluge began when I was topping up the screenwash. I’m thinking of investing in an ark.

    Funny that, I applied lanoguard this week to my van, wish I'd thought about the wind too, soon noticed that when I had sticky bald head and my glasses needed a good soapy wash 😂, really easy to apply though and a lot less messy than the old underseal I did years ago

    Nice one John, that's the best way to go with the suspension, the air bag suspension or sumo spring bump stop replacements, puts load in a place not originally intended for it, the weight of the rear of the van is meant to be at each end of the leaves, not in the middle.
    Sprinters/crafter's have been known to crack the chassis with air bag springs.

    • @geoffcampbell7846
      @geoffcampbell7846 Před rokem +1

      That's interesting. Following that logic, sitting on the bump stops would do the same to the chassis. Could it be that the bags in this case have been over inflated to take out all the spring action, so putting all the load centrally on the chassis? Possibly mis-use do you think?

    • @TheAdenau

    I’ve air bags on rear of my motohome. But they make back end horrible. Recommend 2.5 bar, it’s rock hard. 1 bar not too bad. 0 bar much better. So just use it too park up if I’m on a slope.

    Found that very interesting regards the suspension and I think I can understand where you are coming from on this. I am no expert either but what you were saying does make sense to me anyway, Yes going off road you will require more travel and I believe you hit the nail on the head with that the travel needs to under control so the gas struts are just the job. Other point being that lanoguard is made from wool so you may end up with a flock of sheep following you up the road.🤣

    Hi John.
    I’ve just watched this interesting video, tho most of it is beyond my need (or scope) and think it would be a good idea to spray the underside of my van with Lanoguard. Just wondering if there anywhere I should avoid with the spray? As an ‘older’ lady I do try hard to understand and keep an eye on the basic workings of my van, but must admit I have never really looked underneath it! I think I can identify most things under there, but have no idea if I can damage anything or stop it working properly if I spray it when it shouldn’t be sprayed? Thanking you in advance.

    • @GadgetJohn
      @GadgetJohn  Před rokem +1

      Just avoid spraying near your brakes, the instructions are really good on the packaging as they explain where to apply and how many applications are needed in different areas.

    Hi John, regarding your text comment on no more bangs and rattling, would you put that down to the gas shocks, the new springs or a combination of the two or all the new parts? Initially I would have thought that double leaf springs may give a harder ride, but of course they could be progressive, so I'm thinking the gas shocks, and maybe in general a good upgrade even for everyday use. What's your advice, given you've trod this road more than once now?🤔👋

    • @GadgetJohn
      @GadgetJohn  Před rokem +3

      I’d say it’s a combination as I drove some bumpy roads after fitting the new bump stops & gas struts, but before the double rear leaf springs, and it was defiantly more settled and rattle free after all the new suspension parts were fitted.

    • @clivewitney3557
      @clivewitney3557 Před rokem

      I fitted double leaf springs on my van noticably improved the ride, I believe the extra height away from the bump stops give a less harsh ride overall as not hitting those bumpstops as much, just my thoughts!

    • @geoffcampbell7846
      @geoffcampbell7846 Před rokem

      @clivewitney3557 Yep, that makes sense. John's new bump stops also looked shorter than standard. If so, then that would also remove the chance of kinetic energy being directly transferred through the van if they only connect in exceptional conditions. So double leaf springs are keeping the axle clear of the bump stops then. Interesting. Cheers Clive.

    Hello John,
    Many thanks as usual. Could you advise on how you determined what tyre pressures to use with your KO2's.
    Thanks again. Peter D

    • @GadgetJohn
      @GadgetJohn  Před rokem

      Tyre pressure depend on the weight of your vehicle, how you prefer the ride to feel and if you leave the vehicle for long periods without moving it. So in my case 50 psi is what works for me as I don’t like a teeth shattering ride, my van isn’t too heavy for the tyres and I drive at least an hour every few days.

    • @peteroamer
      @peteroamer Před rokem

      Many thanks John, I guessed at 45 front and 50 rear which seems pretty good to me for all round road use. I was just disappointed not to be able to ask BFG directly with my weighbridge results. Very very pleased with the tyres performance though.
      Best wishes Pete D.
