How to Build an Oversized Nightstand to "Match" a Dresser

  • Hey friends! In this video, I'm sharing how I built my parents some oversized nightstands to match their new bed and dresser set.
    If you'd like to build your own, you can grab the printable plans here: woodshop-diaries.myshopify.co...
    Check out the written tutorial with helpful tips along the way here: www.woodshopdiaries.com/diy-o...
    They originally wanted me to build them a whole suite. BUT, while I was dragging my feet a little too long about it, she ended up finding a bed she really liked for a really good deal (cheaper than I could make it) at a local furniture shop.
    So her and my dad snatched up the bed and dresser, but the nightstands that came with the set were a just little...well, a lot...too small for their liking.
    So they asked me to build them two oversized nightstands to "match."
    I took the liberty to change up some design elements so it's not necessarily an exact MATCH to the existing furniture, but it coordinates well and fits right in.
    I hope you enjoy watching them come together here in this video.

    "Distressed" is the word I think you were looking for. These pieces are absolutely beautiful! It is amazing how cheap these are too make (material wise) versus paying hundreds each for similar quality furniture at a chain furniture stores. Plus these items will not fall apart over time as they are not made of MDF. Stunning!

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  Před rokem +13

      That’s the word, yes! Thank you! People tell me all the time how you can’t make anything decent from “cheaper” materials so I feel like many times that only makes me want to prove them wrong. It’s also much more accessible to average builders, so I like to show what you can do with it. I’m glad you enjoyed the project and I appreciate you watching 😊 happy new year!

    I'm sure you get a million requests but I would totally buy plans for a nightstand / dresser that has drawers on one side and a sliding door on the other with just shelves behind it. The door would slider over the face of the drawers when opened. That would fit nicely in my bedroom design.

    • @WoodshopDiaries

    These are beautiful. What a wonderful gift for your parents. I will be making a set of these for my daughter. A side note: If you have ever found rodents in your dresser drawers, you would come to love not only backs but also bottoms to your pieces. We had a home with aluminum siding that was damaged in a storm. When the contractors came to repair it, it drove the mice that had taken up residence between the siding and the house into the house. I have no idea how they got in, but they did. Luckily, I have three cats that caught eight of them. The last one jumped out at me when I opened the drawer of a side table with no back. I lost 5 years of my life. ;D Backs and bottoms keep out dirt, many bugs, rodents and even pets such as small cats and ferrets.

    Happy New Year!! Loved how this project came together, and they do match the dresser and bed. A thought that just occurred was to apply a base coat of black, then paint white, so that when you lightly scuff the front pieces the black shows through. (Yeah I know... you don't like painting. LOL) Also in this video it was good to see the project manager walk through, obviously inspecting your work. (grin) Until next time... Happy building.

      The darker undercoat is an excellent idea. I debated doing that with a dark brown stain because it seemed like the dresser was like that. But I changed my mind because 1. I Really didn’t want to stain it because I was in a hurry
      2. I asked my mom and she said she didn’t want the darker colors coming through. They did on the dresser and she felt it looked a little more busy than she really wanted.
      But, I’ve used that method in the past when whitewashing and it really gives an extra dimension that looks nice.

    Hey! You’ve been missed, but I hope you and yours had a wonderful Christmas! I think these companion pieces go very well with the originals, so well in fact, that I’m sure many would assume they belong to the same set. That is, as long as you figure out what that difficult word is, and then do it to these pieces! (And you know I couldn’t help smiling at your “words are hard” moment!). I really like these Shara, a good job as always, and I love how you keep showing us that “simple” and “cheap” material can look just as good, as long as time and carefulness are put into it.

    They look fabulous! Could you talk a little more about your pet peeve with back panels on items with drawers? Is it that it just seems unnecessary?

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  Před rokem +1

      I’ve always had a pet peeve with dresser backs since before I was ever building dressers. If I ever had an issue with the drawer slide, it was difficult to access the inside (especially with small drawers) to adjust, replace, repair from only the front side. Also, in the past, I’d routinely overfill my drawers and my contents (socks were a common culprit) would get stuck between the back and the slides and not allow me to close the drawer fully. So I’d have to remove the drawer, remove whatever was stuck and reinstall the drawer. So I grew to hate backs on things with drawers well before I began building them. So now when I build them, I rarely add it. But some people think that’s insanity 🤷‍♀️ I can honestly say I’ve never built a dresser without a back panel and regretted not adding the pack panel haha. So to each their own, but that’s my reasoning 😅

    Shara, I've already watched this video twice! I love how you spent some time to dress up a basic box into something that will be admired for many years to come. I always balk at the price of wood moldings but then remind myself how the moldings really dress up the job. This project is great because after the basic build one could add their own variation of moldings, carvings and drawer pulls to personalize or match their particular circumstance. Once again you've inspired me to get out in the shop and pick up on some projects in progress. Thanks for Sharing! P.S. In the few comments I've read viewers are talking about your hat. I looked for that hat on your website but couldn't find it. Maybe its just me but with at least two more monts of this weather I'm thinking that sure would be nice. Happy new year! No, I didn’t have any concerns once assembled. I wouldn’t have had any concerns during assembly except that I wasn’t thinking and drilled the holes in the ends of the 1x3 too far apart. The 1x3s weren’t splitting…it was the 2x2s. The second one I built, I drilled them closer together (toward the center) and had zero issues. That said, Glue wouldn’t hurt. I just didn’t feel it would help anything.
