There's like less than 20 2x4 at 4$ each give or take. It's basically 80$ but way sturdier than Ikea frames and all done bed frame 🤷 plus it's gonna last a lot longer
What a great job!!! I love the way this looks, and I think it was brilliant to use products you can re-use, rather than buying a metal frame, only to have to dispose of it when you're finally at a place where you can decide about the frame you'd like to have permanently!
For information: I bought a very high quality mattress a few years ago, along with an even more expensive memory foam top mattress, to get some really good sleep. I was never really happy with it, till I replaced the bedframe with a higher quality product, with bended oak bed springs. It completely transformed the bed, even though they're a foot and a half below the top of the bed. What I'm saying is: Those 2 x 4 supporting the mattress aren't doing you any favors. I'm old military and I can sleep anywhere, but for truly excellent sleep, the springs are important.
Gaps definitely not too wide. I built a bedframe with 2.5in gaps that only has a 3in latex foam mattress on top. Orientation matters though, going horizontally/width-wise. Only noticeable when I lean on my elbows to get up or turn over.
No box spring? They exist for a reason. You're wasting a lot of lumber, and making this a lot more complicated than it needs to be. Turn the cross members on edge like the outside. Not only will it make it several times stronger, you can space them farther apart. Put in bridging on the ends and your mattress wont sag at all. I'd also put the legs on the corners, it will make it a lot more stable. A single post in the middle will eliminate any sagging.
I've built similar support before, they are brutal, hurt your back. I've found the best support is a basic metal bed with tubular steel pipes, they offer some give and improve the way the mattress feels, you dont wake up soar and beat up like on a solid base (for us)
This bed frame has a really beautiful rustic chic & minimalist qualities ❤ imagine if it was stained or made in a different wood species ❤❤❤. Great work
Awesome and it is beautiful. Given any consideration for the height? about 12" from the floor? it does make getting in and out much easier for the body.

I was thinking the same thing. It probably depends on the price of wood in each country, but in my case it would cost me less to buy a ready-made bed frame than to build one out of wood.

It’s a butt-jointed box with a bunch of pocket screwed cross members. The feet are I-beams made of 2x4s. I think you can figure them out if you gaze at them for about 10 seconds
Let's not forget the screws the multiple hours of initially setting it up now he's redoing it adding more lumber this guy is well beyond a couple hundred dollars. And it weighs a shit load. He then complains about mold and humidity but doesnt seal the wood...
The cost for the drill, saw screw bits with screws and lumber that was bought at the high of lumber costs. Any department store craigslist would be way cheeper and easier.
If you guys want a professional way to do it that's cheap easy to make yourself.make a rectangular box attach a strong piece of OSB plywood. attached to to the top to the bottom of the box to the floor place your mattress on it and it makes it look like your whole beds floating off the ground
Like very much the temporay foundation, very nice craftmanship...although you should check with the mattress manufacturer what kind of foundation the mattress requires. Most recent mattresses require a solid foundation, as a slat foundation will not provide adequate support and will even damage the mattress. You can easily modify your slat foundation to a solid one, by adding mdf sheets or similar on top of the slats. If ventilation is an issue, you can also drill small holes on the mdf sheets.
Mine sits 5 ft off the floor with a Cali king on top and a tiny workshop underneath. The only down side is the head space. So if you’re going taller stay under 4 ft lol your head will than you
You aren't kidding about moldy mattresses. I moved to Valdosta, GA (super humid and hot), put down my new carpet and laid the mattress directly on it. Later an air conditioner was added to the small room. . 8 months later I lifted the mattress and rug and both were covered in mold underneath. Directly to the dump!
Honestly the cost of the lumber and wood screws probably goes waaaaaay beyond what it would cost to simply purchased a premade platform bed frame……also, that is SOOO heavy.
I literally just posted a comment breaking down the cost of building this bed frame. It makes absolutely no sense factoring in the weight and then he complains about mold and humidity but doesn't even seal the wood this guy is just trying to flex in front of his wife.
Only modification I would suggest is to take it apart, and seal every surface of the timber, even where timber meets timber, with a good oil based sealer. One day, you will go to flip your mattress, and the timber it was touching will be green and black, and you will have to dispose of it. At least sealed, the moulds will not get into the timber.

Yeah but every other bed in the world has the slats going in the other direction, no idea why they built this one the wrong way.

Depends on the bed. Manufacturers have different specs for the slat spacing. My Endy requires maximum 3inch gap.
I love its simplicity.
