Greg Oden is a heartbreaker. Looking back in hindsight you still take him #1. He was such a dominant force with Ohio State that you thought that would translate over to the NBA. I can't help but think of David Thompson when a topic like this is raised.
David Thompson was a 6'4" guard with a 48" vertical out of NC State back in the late '70s. He was drafted by the then-ABA Denver Nuggets and was the ABA Rookie of the Year in 1975-76. The Nuggets were one of the four teams that joined the NBA after the merger, and Thompson was an immediate All-Star, averaging 26ppg over his first four NBA seasons. In 1978, he put up a career high 73 points in a 139-137 loss against the Detroit Pistons. Nicknamed "The Skywalker", he looked to have a Top-Level Hall of Fame Career ahead of him.
But, as he's said more than once, drugs ruined his career. Specifically cocaine. Having signed a then-record $4 million over 5 years contract, while high on coke at New York's famous Studio 54 disco, he fell down a flight of stairs and tore up a knee. Though he played several seasons after that, he was never The Skywalker again. This was an incredibly gifted, supremely talented basketball player. Were it not for drugs, I think his name could be mentioned in the same company as Kobe and- yes- Jordan.

Magic has 3 MVPs, 5 championships, and 3 FMVPs. That alone puts him in the convo with anyone in the top 10.
Plus 9+ All NBA 1st team selections puts him in club with only 12 other guys and of those he has as many or more championships, FMVPS, or MVPs as just 4 of them.
And easily had the longevity to play another 3-4 years at All star level as evidenced by his short comeback play and probably would've been 1st or 2nd All time in assists had he kept going and still is to this day the all time leader in playoff assists. He literally has the highest win % of all time. Surprising that as a Knicks fan, You'd mention Jeremy Lin
    He wasn't a star
But he definitely qualified "on the top of the world" at one point
If it weren't for that season ending knee injury on the first game of the season
He could possibly stay in the league for few more years

Big problem with Wall is that his game didnt really expand. So once he wasnt as fast as a bullet, his whole game got taken from him.
He could've had a career as an older player if he developed his jumper.

5:20 the Blazers didn’t draft Aldridge. As a disappointed Bulls fan I remember the awful draft day trade of Aldridge for Tyrus Thomas with 1 of the 2 picks from the Eddie Curry trade. The following year I was hopeful the 2nd would convey to #1 with generational talent Greg Oden available and instead got Joakim Noah, who was a better pro than Oden but still not quite the offensive player they needed in the post 😢

Even at the time a lot of pepple knew Portland was making a mistake. In 2007 I had needed knee surgery myself. My Doctor at thetime shook his head when we talked about Oden. 'He is going to have horrific knee and leg injuries" I was told a few days after we drafted him. The Doctor could tell that having one leg be literally 1.5 inches or 5cm lonher was going to not lead to a long career. He was right too.

Rondos career ended as a smoldering dumpster fire. The last 8 yrs of his career average 2-3 trades a yr - no one wanted him.
Got a fake chip in the bubble - any guard could have ridden in that bus seat - but his even for a guy who’s no longer even a top 50 PG in the league, getting benched throughout finals the following year (clippers) was a whole new level of being marginalized.
He bounced around for a few more years but no one needs a guy who can’t score, isn’t great on defense, has no physicality and a sh!t attitude and so he never got picked up again
