Octopath Traveler II (Switch) Review

- The shimmering sights and sounds of HD-2D return in JRPG form in Octopath Traveler II, out on February 24, 2023 on Nintendo Switch. Here's our review of that video game, which follows up Octopath Traveler (which came out in 2018). How has time been to the eight new party members in Octopath? Does HD-2D still sing? How's the battle system? Do they actually talk to each other this time?

Been looking forward to it for ages. Love these style games. I understand people being disappointed with story or characters and lack of interaction but I am one of those people who mainly plays jrpgs for the exploration, music, combat and overall world/customisation. Hopefully lots of cool hidden challenges and bosses too. Good story and characters are like a nice appreciated bonus but if not there then thats a shame but hardly a dealbreaker for me. I loved the first octopath. :)
I'd imagine you will be very happy with this game then. It's a real nice world to explore and play around in
Same for me most of time. 👌🏽
This game feels like I'm playing FFIII again, just 30 years later lol.
The music is amazing. I have been listening to it on Ayra Hikari's youtube channel. Portitio and Agnea themes are especially good and very catchy. Osvald isn't too shabby either.
Awesome Graphics, music and gameplay .Preordered waiting on next Friday. The demo sold me.
The night time OST is the bomb whatre you smoking.
It’ll be cool if you can switch in and out each one of the four travelers during combat - just like final fantasy x. Instead of a party of four in combat, there’s actually eight. Maybe we would have to wait to see Octopath Traveler 3 to see how the new combat system evolves.
The gacha actually uses 8 at once. I really wish they kept it for 2
I'm a little worried about length because octopath 1 had 4 chapters each. I did Osvaldo story in demo and took me 1 hour and a half. Did they give us more chapters or possibly longer ones? Otherwise if not I essentially played half of Osvalds story in such a short time and it barely got off the ground narratively. Can you speak to that?
Each character has more than 4 specific chapter segments, either in the form of more numbered chapters or chapters with two different segments in different locales. Osvald's story gets off the ground (and he remains one of my favorites)
@NinWRTV ok cool. I was like oh no I plated chapters 1 and 2 already just I'm the demo. I thought half his story was done lol
Gonna download this
great review. regarding the soundtrack, everything i listened so far is at least as good as the euqivalent in the first one, in my opinion.
In Bravely Default 2, you can just choose to re-do the move you did last turn on that character. I don't think Octopath Travler 1 did that. Can you do that here?
i played the demo, and there you can't do that. however there is an option for the cursor to remember the last action it took( provided it can be used in a row)
@@magicmasterfan1 thanks Pedro. :)
If they do manage to get an Octopath 3 possible, make it so that characters can be switched DURING BATTLE
Sounds absolutely incredible! The first one is still one of my favourite games on the Switch, so I can’t wait!
one thing that stopped me to play the first octopath was the interaction between characters.
I had high hopes when hear dev said they had improved the interaction of team members
but now it seems may not be as much as I hoped.

@@tomsimmons7673 nah it's still same only this time have 2-part cross path story, the rest of it still disconnected like 1st game. many were expecting more than that, score doesn't dismiss the issue.
It's fun to have interactions but the game at it's core is 8 different stories. With all of them being separate at the start yet all being tied together at the end. If they add too much interaction then it blends the line of 8 stories and makes it just one messy one.
Its a 9 for me, not perfect, definitely love it,
Its a package on its own,
Like the previous game i hopefully can spend at least a hundred hours
I don't accept that 7,5. It has to be a 10
He isnt going to lie about his opinion to appeal to you
😂
Disconnected story :( Same reason I didn't finish the 1st.
thats literally the proposal for the series. if you dont like it then its just not for you, pretty much every single other JRPG out there has a connected story, go check those out.
@@magicmasterfan1 lol you feel better bud?

@@omensoffate he's telling the truth.
Legit sad that they still couldn't figure out how to mix the story from all 8 characters in an organic way. Makes the series feel like a huge gimmic if they can't figure that out. Like reading 8 separate novels. They can be good, but the overall value of being given 8 separate novels just feels weird if they don't mix. The series is a beautiful, amazingly scored, disappointment imo.
That sucks. Kind of a deal breaker for me.
That's the whole magic of why people loved the classic FFs and other jrpgs, it felt like a true band of cast members forming a party rather than just a random set of individuals who just so happen to be next to one another.

Or Octopath just isnt for you and you're unable to appreciate the series for what it is and does. I'll be enjoying it when it's out :)
@@Palidor definitely not saying you can't enjoy it. Ya gotta find it odd tho that the whole gimmic is a bit pointless right? "You can start the game as anyone!" Alright, yeah? And? It just makes it feel half baked from a story perspective.
That comment about the 8 stories not being connected is a BIG dissapointment.
Good review. Will check it out on a deep sale.

@@tomsimmons7673 Dont really listen to JS for his opinions on game quality. But I hope you enjoy it. I'm sure it'll be $10 to $15 soon enough.
Sounds basically just like an improved version of the first game. I was expecting a little more to be honest. I was excited about this one but after watching this review I might skip it.
First one is great. If it’s an improved version how can u moan. People can’t reinvent the wheel every time.
@@FLAMEOHOTMAN15 I’m not moaning at all. I enjoyed the first game. I just expected a little more in the way of improvements. This seems like basically the exact same game. I was expecting a jump like from final fantasy 5 to 6. Instead this is basically just a paint by the numbers sequel. I’m not expecting a wheel re-invention. Just slight disappointment. Whatever though.
@@FLAMEOHOTMAN15 fanboys like you are insufferable.

How about trying the demo and make your own conclusion?
A 7.5 for octopath travelers 2 trash review
The 1st octopath was mid as well
Another trash review
Metacritic shows a 86 which is more accurate
Wait so it sucks?? 😭
His description was making me think it was an 8/10 game. It’s always either 7s or 9s. Where are the 8s?
If it makes you feel any better I was very close to an 8

A poor review, this site keeps on losing quality
It seems like a shoddy review. It's an opinion at the end of the day so whatever. I tried the demo and it had me sold. As far as having all the characters connect in some cohesive way seems a bit unrealistic and doesn't seem to be what the game is aiming for. It does try to fix some gripes from the original but these are all different stories.

this is a bad review. He didn't mention MANY things... for example how there are 3 different battle music types. so you don't get sick of the same old thing. That is ONE example. there are many more he missed. PEOPLE, don't base you decision on this goof balls review. the game improves on EVERYTHING.
