1863 Sharps Carbine Problems

- This is a short story of how we were able to make this Armi sport 1863 sharps carbine shoot accurately. This rifle shoots best with a lubed .54cal ringtail bullet, 15 grains of filler (grits) and 35 grains 3F Swiss powder. This is one of the most interesting black powder firearms that I’ve got to work on and shoot.
The very first firearm that I shot was a Sharps. It was my dad's. That was way back in 1975. Both are long gone now. I sure miss that rifle.
I recommend using the eras gone Richmond labs bullet. I love using flat based paper cartridges, when measured properly they seat perfectly and nothing gets sheared or lost (also makes unloading easier). I highly recommend the Eras gone bullet for the cartridges, they have a heel that attaches to the paper without making a bulge that interferes with proper seating in the chamber. Thank you for the video, we need more content like this on CZcams.
I have seen some video on them and they look great but they have been out of stock for the last few month. I intended to buy one as soon as they’re available.
I had no idea they sold out that quick, dang…
@@benjaminjarrett9816 yeah, they hope to have them back in stock sometime in January
@@Everythingblackpowder Try Tom at Accurate Molds, he's got a similar mold Cat 55-467H. Nice shooting and good Video.
@@megladon89 thank you!
Flat bottom paper cartridges will give consistency of powder charge resulting in better accuracy.
That is super great shooting by the way, congratulations.
Thank you
Linen cartridges are able to stand rough handling and have a nitraded flat paper wrapping.
I am impressed. Great off hand shooting by the way…
Thank you!
Another factor to consider is chamber length. Duelist1954 has shown that different makers have been using different chamber lengths with Pedersoli having one of the longer ones. Simply making a cartridge from a commercial former could end up with a cartridge that either has to jump into the rifling or if seated, leaves a gap for the cap spark to jump. Not good for consistency. Measure the chamber and make a cartridge that fits yours.
Like boys in a toy store! 😂
Sharps is one of my favorites in the 1800s time period, along with the Spencer, Henry, and Springfield breechloader. 🥰😍🤩
My IAB Sharps measures .556 inches in the bore, so .535 bullets are useless, I have been using .562 round balls and they shoot well.
Impressive. Your are a great shot
Thank you
Great video. Thank you
I feel for you about giving it back. Always wanted a bp sharpes
I really, really, really want one of those!
great conclusions!! good job!!
Thank you
Nice video. I really enjoyed it.
Thank you
Didn't suck! haha, Learned a couple more things today. Thanks, Mike.
Thank you
Great video , certainly didn't suck...... now about fixing other people's guns, I've got this 1860 army............
Hi Guys, great pictures and Landscape, i learned a lot, 35 Grain also for the 200 Yeards ?
greetings from a Bavarian Sharp Shooter
what is you bullet weight? and are you using more powder at longer ranges than the 35 grs you mentioned?
I would like to know if the front driving band of your bullet fits into the bore of your muzzle.
i think your conclusions are most probably correct. Nice offhand shooting
If I just load loose, it takes about 100 grains of powder to fill up the chamber. Are you using that much powder or are you putting a filler in between the bullet and the powder?
Grits
I just got an 1863 sharps rifle. Took about 30 caps to get one round of loose ammo to fire. Spark is getting through the channel, but maybe not enough? Any suggestions?
Nice!
Thank you!
Have you tried using Zigzag rolling papers? I have used them in my revolver. Not real sure if they would work with a rifle diameter in that size. Just thought it was worth mentioning.
Not for this rifle
I have a 50 cal shiloh 1863 sharp carbine I use paper cigarettes cartridge pretty accurate and reliable , black powder has compress to work ! I can't see loose powder working !
Don’t believe your lying eyes
You don't have to compress the powder much
ever tried the Richmond bullet ?
Use Hahn tubes with a Moose molds ringtail bullet with 43 grs of 3f GOEX. Works like a champ for me in my Shiloh 63 Sharps
All my videos suck that's why I'm watching yours
😂
You’re doing the lords work with that little carbine. They are a lot of fun. So are the Smith carbines. Antique predecessors to the M4… I do think you sweep the muzzle over your friends and cameramen pretty regularly. Or maybe it just appears that way…
Get bent.
Video damned sure didn't suck thanks.
This gun should be used with metal cartridges, I don't know how they are called in english, in practise these are brass cartridges without the primer, only the open canal.
Interesting, I’m not familiar with those. Is it something like the smith carbine uses?
@@Everythingblackpowder Yes, for some reason CZcams deleted my last post with links to the Polish shop with this gun and proper special brass, that contains the valve.
@@Everythingblackpowder There is link to video from people that run the Saguaro Arms shop in Poland and they use brass, I mentioned.

@@Qwertypp10 thank you
I checked out the link you had up here. When I came back to thank you for posting it it had disappeared. UT tricks? anyway thanks for the link. very interesting
Great vid. What mfg is the rifle?
I believe it’s an Army San Marco
Not sure on your take, I am running the Pedersoli Shaps 45/70, 32 inch barrel sporting 1863 model. I am assuming, more than likely the breach loading system is exact the same. I have been told 2 things about shooting them. (1) one by a gun smith, who said like you, drop the bullet in the breach top up with 30,50, 70, measure or a full BP load, it would take near 100 Grains or so of BP, close the breach cap it of and "BANG." Although I could use a little rice to pack it out if you want smaller loads behind the bullet. (2) another person said, yes it will work but the rubber O ring, will blow out within a few shots. Whats your take. Never shot it, I still have about 10 Brass shells which hold about 55 grains of BP. And 380 grain bullet. Any advice would be good. Which would you go for on the options ?
I can’t say. I wouldn’t be afraid to try either one
@@Everythingblackpowder 30 grains of powder; using black powder would not be that good with such a big Cal and heaverier bullet. I was refering to my comment regards black powder use!! I have about 385 grain lead bullets same system as you have, but my one is .45+ cal I have brass shells which hold about 55/57 grain from Pedersoli for this rifle. using about 2ff home made BP. so logicaly following your idea droping the bullet in, loading up with some rice,or other filler, following by about 65 to 70 grains I would basically be copying you. Is yours a Pedersoli rifle, if so, the system breach wise is exact the same except difference cal aspects/size. But not sure if you know, but the rifles are proofed to smokless powder, that information comes stright from Pedersoli own test Proofing house, as a point of interest ! Happy post up the results. I am confused as to why you said you would not try it, clearly in the film your have. 🤔 or have I just missed something here !!
Yes you missed something 😉 I said I wouldn’t be afraid to try it. This rifle is made by armi sport. And can’t hold more than about 50gr
@@Everythingblackpowder HAHAHH thanks thats put that question to sleep. thanks again. Power to you Bro!! I did top my rifle up once never fired it. but it held a 100 grainof BP. that would give good punch in the shoulder hah.. But You were correct. OPPS!!
Make a paper cartridge but you need powder with bigger granulation, then filled full cartridge and measure the powder by weight. With big granulation you have more volume but less weight of powder. czcams.com/video/tieDzxe-hiw/video.html
👍👍👍👍
How was the trigger on the sharps . Easy or hard ?
It’s on the heavier side of things. Maybe 10lb pull
@@Everythingblackpowder same as mine
In Deutschland gibt es Messingpatronen die mit Pulver gefüllt werden und dem Projektiel
Honestly it doesn't make any sense, paper cartridge worked well back in the day.
I have something for you you will be like eee what..... in my Country Poland we can buy a sharp's like that what use 45-70 up to 45-120 BUT wait they are NOT paper cartrige and they are NOT normal amunition in order to avoide Legal bla bla in Poland they create bras case like 45-70 but with out primer at the end primer is prucation cup but in place of primer is a chrome small ball who act like cap .... well you will need to see it it's something that you never have sean before :)
and you just closed the block on a dropped hammer. guaranteed the firing pin is bent now.
it doesn’t have a firing pin. I guarantee
@@Everythingblackpowder haha!!!!my bad!! i am used to shooting cartridge sharps and out of habit i watch the hammer everytime somebody drops the block!
@@rt000r no worries
Man that’s awesome. I’m looking to buy one. Just started doing a little research on it.
They’re a lot of fun
