- Cimarron Firearms' McNelly Sharps carbine is a replica of the guns used by Capt Leander McNelly's Texas Ranger Special Force in 1875 to tame the bandits of the Nueces Strip in south Texas. The carbine, built by Armi Sport is a reproduction of the Sharps percussion modeo 1859 carbines that were converted to fire .50-70 Government cartridges in the late 1860s.

"I want Men that don't miss." Bravo!
Im out.....lol
I love how these old big bore rifles are more artillery pieces than shoulder fired rifles.
Believe it or not, I bought it at Sears at least 10 years ago
Thanks for the history lesson on these rifles!
Love the channel for the cool guns and HATS! Thanks for taking us along to shoot.
I've had it for a few years. I just don't wear it that often. It is made by D Bar J Hat company in Las Vegas. It is a copy of the Everett Hitch hat from the movie "Appaloosa"
More than 90,000 Sharps carbines were made and used by both sides in the US Civil War In. 50/70. Widely used after the war as well both with its rattail linen cartridges and cartridge conversion by both civilians and the Army cavalry, the Sharps name was legend.
Really liked the history lesson you gave on the Sharps. Just recently bought an IAB sharps carbine off of someone I know but it is a 45-70. Was really impressed with the carbine.
A very well made short film. I salute you, sir!
Discovered your videos about 2 weeks ago and really enjoy them. All I can say is, POOR ROY!
Very interesting Mike! Thank you!
what a great historic rifle. nice vid Mike!
Remember the Modoc Indian War (1872-1873) in the Lava Beds in northeastern
California which straddles the Siskiyou/Modoc County line. Both the Sharps Model
1868 carbine conversion and U.S. Model 1868 "Trapdoor" single shot Springfield
rifle conversions chambered in .50-70 Springfield were employed in this conflict. The
U.S. Army, Oregon and California Volunteer Infantry used them. The Warm Springs
Indian scouts were issued Spencer repeating carbines, probably Model 1860 in
.56-56 rimfire.
Great video buddy.
The Sharps carbine was very popular during the US Civil War but was supplanted by the rugged Spencer carbine. The Spencer was a repeater with a metallic cartridge and was very reliable. The Sharps were also rugged falling block actions but during the War, the cartridges were not waterproof. Post war, both the carbine and rifle would be widely used.
Thank you mike for sharing a view of the past with this Beautifully put together sharps replica. That's a very heavy load to use for hunting men...don't you think :)
Good video. Ever since I was a kid I lusted after a sharps. I finally found Shilo Sharps but the cost at this time is a little high. Nice shooting thanks for sharing.
I love the 'report' of that thing!
I hope I can get my hand on one in that calibre one day. They make every damn thing in .45-70 these days. The Sharps .50-90 cartridge was famously known as the Sharps Big Fifty.
Sorry but the Big 50 was the 50-120
Mike you are a very good shot. I see you out with many different guns you may have not shot much and you always do well. If I buy one of these it will be in 45-70 for sure. I had a 45-60 1876 and that was a pain and it wasn't a Uberti 1876 and the gun was junk. You actually did a vedio on making 45-70 into 45-60 to help me out.
Great stuff. I was wondering when you'd get around to doing a Sharps review, and the carbine is just that much more interesting. And in .50-70 no less.
That thing would leave a mark!!
It's not too pricey to reload for, though. I've been reloading for my .50-70 Shiloh and it's been easy to find brass and bullets. Shoots good with a stout compressed charge.
Thanks for adding that Cosmoline. It doesn't get said enough especially when dealing with more or less obsolete calibres. Were it not for reloading we (shooters) should all perish.
Great video,Mike! I'm in Nueces county. Its pronounced Nu-a-sys. You were close enough for me to know you're talking about my back yard!
Nice shooting Mike. Good ole Kentucky wind-age.
Excellent video. Nowadays the Nueces strip is overrun with illegal aliens and drug smugglers.
Allan Singer Where's McNelly now?
Looks like a good cartridge for concealed carry! :)
Nice hat Mike not to mention the rifle.
Nice video
Thank you Duelist1954 for the fun video and keep up the great columns in Guns of the Old West!
You know, I'd love to see the Italian manufacturer's make a replica of the Remington- Keene Sporting Rifle and/or Carbine…do you think it could ever happen?
By-the-by, do any of your colleagues from the magazine, post videos on CZcams?
Respectfully,
E.
esteban ugarte I'd love to see a Remington-Keene replica too, but I doubt that it will ever happen. I'm not aware of any other Guns of the Old West writers on YT
The sharps rifle is my favorite single shot rifle of that time
Sweet 👍🏼❤️🇺🇸🤠
Great video. Does your trigger seem to be loose and rattle a bit even when cocked? Almost like a Marlin lever action trigger. Mine shoots fine but was always curious if it was normal.
You pronounced it just fine Mike.
Nice Hat!
Tickle 'Im Good, Mike, Tickle Ol' Roy Good !
Elmer Kelton wrote some great Texas Rangers books that include one on Capt. McNelly.
Très bien !
wow Ten X is proud of their ammo ait they
Yup...actually it was probably more like 15 years ago.
Mike can you please answer a couple of questions for me? I have googled and cant find an answer. Did the US Cavalry use these 1863 conversion Sharps along with the Spencers after the Civil War or did they just stick with the Spencers? My second question is about the reproduction 1874 cavalry Sharps, were 1874 Sharps carbines ever issued to the cavalry along with the 1873 Springfields?
The war Department bought 30,000 converted .50-70 Sharps carbines between 1866 and 1869. I know the Ninth Cav was still using them in the mid-1870s. I don't think the 1873 Sharps was ever an official army issued rifle
Thank you Mike. I love your videos.
Mike I want one of these beauties
Beautiful gun, how come the ammo costs do much?
have you ever had a chance to mess with a Malcolm scope? If you ever get your hands on one you gotta share it with us :)
A friend has an original Sharps cartridge conversion, we thought it was .50-70 until he tried one of my reloads and it split the case wide open... it was .50-70 marked but converted at some stage for .50-90!
Probably throat erosion.
like you said mike 45 70 would be the one to go for, a hell of alot cheaper on ammo nice review bud
I had an HR .45-70 Springfield Trapdoor service carbine that I let go a couple of years ago. I still have a couple of hundred rounds of .45-70 ammo stored in metal ammo boxes and thought about replacing the Trapdoor with a .45-70 Sharps service rifle or carbine -- a replica of course. I always wondered why the U.S. War Department chose the Trapdoor (Allen breach) in 1873 instead of the Sharps falling block, which they were already familiar with and which was a stronger action.
When you close the breech on an Allen Action you have the leverage to cam a cartridge that is reluctant to enter the chamber due to fowling.
Richard Najjar Cost. The Civil War was a very expensive war. The US didn't have a lot of money for new rifles, the Trapdoor was a lot cheaper than the Sharps rifle, as early models before the 1873 were simply converted muskets. The Remington Rolling Block would have been a superior rifle as well, but cost was the big thing.
I suspect they went with the trapdoor because there were a ton of Springfield rifled muskets around and there was a conversion kit available. cheaper.
'Ol painless.
Mike what brand of hat are you wearing and where did you get it? Thank you
Cloyce Spears It is the Everett Hitch hat from Appolusa, custom made by D Bar J in Las Vegas
I’d sure like to know who made the hat you are wearing in this video
500gr?!?! Holy hell I bet when people got hit with this thing it felt like someone hit them with a cannon!
Oh...I got one of these about 2 years ago if anyone was wondering. :)
Evil Roy has been promoted!
The sharps carabine is.."thump"
True grit ;)
So is that the kind of gun berdans sharpshooters would have. Been outfitted with before they were converted?
no this is a cavalry carbine, berdan's sharpshooters had full length rifles with 30"barrels. also the metallic cartridges didn't come until after the war
Hello, Which would you prefer for hunting, sharps carbine or trapdoor carbine?
The Sharps. The action is shorter, giving you a more compact overall length. Also the action is faster and stronger.
Could try a winchester high wall Uberti make them and so dose davide pedersoli think the high wall may be stronger than the sharps or trapdoor
I second the 1885 high wall. My favorite rifle.
Looking on information in regards to a 1863 Armsport. Cannot find any info for it.
+mindakota1 - Not an Armi Sport.
I have one like this but in .54 paper cartridge.
It's got to make the miss at about 7:40 sting!
How come these things are so darn expensive?
"Who you calling a fat little cartridge chubby?"
You got a buckskin coat at sears???
Wow
Too bad the 500SW wouldn't work in there,it would be cheaper and easier to find but the SW is .500 dia.and the 50-70 is .515 dia.The SW does have a shorter case though.
so would le bouf have used a .50-70 in true grit?
Th3Sabator45 Yes, he would have.
So the take away is that if you are interested in one of these rifles, you should buy a .50 BMG for economy...
I’d take a sharps over a Henry. The Henry is just too fragile
In other words...not much has changed.
hey new hat what is it
Just that we can't hang them anymore.
I finally got myself or should I say Puddin gifted me with a 52 Sharps rifle .54 cal
Ruger Old Army Girl Lucky girl!
@@duelist1954 thanks 😊 hope all is well with you? So mostly I see the Christmas tree bullets, but I know eras gone as CS Richmond sharps with a flat base any thoughts on what mold I should get?
Thanks
My only experience with Sharps molds was one from Pedersoli, which I didn’t like.
$110 bucks wow. I really should think long and hard about bullet casting.
You find out by going to Midwayusa.
$110... holycrap...
$110 for 20 bullets....that's $5.50 a shot.....a far cry from 2 for a quarter.......
Yes, Nueces was pronounced correctly. Nueces means nuts.
you could make an income by reloading these.......
Nu eh cis in Texican. :-)
For that price you may as we'll shoot the .50 BMG
OK, one thing, you need to have someone operating the camera, when you show any aspect of the gun your positioning was not conducive to the viewer actually being able to see anything.
NU or NEW & ACE's or Ace-is
a hard man you say? i think patton was the last person who can be described as such
Better define “cleanup”.
I bet that rock a deer
Those ain't rifle rounds, those are artillery rounds.
Saddle-sore Pedro says "WOW das-a-lodda-money-fer-juzz-20-booleets-mang!!!"
Wanna shoot some more on the cheap?...Save that brass!!! Press out the primers with an awl, seat new ones with a wooden dowel, fill with Black Powder, thumb press a round ball in the case...done... they go "bang" and put holes in paper at 25 yards, good enough to keep the old guns happy.... .I bought some .50/70 and .45/70 brass from Dixie Gunworks like 30 years ago, and re-use them forever that way....just 4 or 5 at a time every year or so when "dusting off" one of my originals that aches to be warm again! You dont need to have full-house, buffalo slaying, 1000 yard creedmore loads for the originals, just enough to work the action, make some smoke, and please the ghosts and gods of of old times past....I treat it like a religious sacrament!
Yeah, they charge you high because they assume you don't go back and reload the brass instead. Consider it as long term investment though.
$6.00 a shot! Too bad a bud isn't set up for those. We'yill, that's the way she goes! I just bought a 59 "paper cutter" and lucky for me, a good friend has a mould to loan me!
That miss made me cringe, for how expensive .50-70 is.
About as expensive to shoot as 20mm. That is not a "common man" gun for sure.
McNelly didn't need no AR!
Pronounced like Newasis, close enough.
Your AR is a nerf gun.
Excellent video. Nowadays the Nueces strip is overrun with illegal aliens and drug smugglers.
Just that we can't hang them anymore.
