  • Cimarron Firearms' McNelly Sharps carbine is a replica of the guns used by Capt Leander McNelly's Texas Ranger Special Force in 1875 to tame the bandits of the Nueces Strip in south Texas. The carbine, built by Armi Sport is a reproduction of the Sharps percussion modeo 1859 carbines that were converted to fire .50-70 Government cartridges in the late 1860s.

    More than 90,000 Sharps carbines were made and used by both sides in the US Civil War In. 50/70. Widely used after the war as well both with its rattail linen cartridges and cartridge conversion by both civilians and the Army cavalry, the Sharps name was legend.

    Remember the Modoc Indian War (1872-1873) in the Lava Beds in northeastern
    California which straddles the Siskiyou/Modoc County line. Both the Sharps Model
    1868 carbine conversion and U.S. Model 1868 "Trapdoor" single shot Springfield
    rifle conversions chambered in .50-70 Springfield were employed in this conflict. The
    U.S. Army, Oregon and California Volunteer Infantry used them. The Warm Springs
    Indian scouts were issued Spencer repeating carbines, probably Model 1860 in
    .56-56 rimfire.

    The Sharps carbine was very popular during the US Civil War but was supplanted by the rugged Spencer carbine. The Spencer was a repeater with a metallic cartridge and was very reliable. The Sharps were also rugged falling block actions but during the War, the cartridges were not waterproof. Post war, both the carbine and rifle would be widely used.

    Mike you are a very good shot. I see you out with many different guns you may have not shot much and you always do well. If I buy one of these it will be in 45-70 for sure. I had a 45-60 1876 and that was a pain and it wasn't a Uberti 1876 and the gun was junk. You actually did a vedio on making 45-70 into 45-60 to help me out.

    Mike can you please answer a couple of questions for me? I have googled and cant find an answer. Did the US Cavalry use these 1863 conversion Sharps along with the Spencers after the Civil War or did they just stick with the Spencers? My second question is about the reproduction 1874 cavalry Sharps, were 1874 Sharps carbines ever issued to the cavalry along with the 1873 Springfields?

    • @duelist1954
      @duelist1954  Před 6 lety

      The war Department bought 30,000 converted .50-70 Sharps carbines between 1866 and 1869. I know the Ninth Cav was still using them in the mid-1870s. I don't think the 1873 Sharps was ever an official army issued rifle

    I had an HR .45-70 Springfield Trapdoor service carbine that I let go a couple of years ago. I still have a couple of hundred rounds of .45-70 ammo stored in metal ammo boxes and thought about replacing the Trapdoor with a .45-70 Sharps service rifle or carbine -- a replica of course. I always wondered why the U.S. War Department chose the Trapdoor (Allen breach) in 1873 instead of the Sharps falling block, which they were already familiar with and which was a stronger action.

    • @jonathanpoole928
      @jonathanpoole928 Před 7 lety +1

      When you close the breech on an Allen Action you have the leverage to cam a cartridge that is reluctant to enter the chamber due to fowling.

    • @conveyabulloperations1669
      @conveyabulloperations1669 Před 7 lety

      Richard Najjar Cost. The Civil War was a very expensive war. The US didn't have a lot of money for new rifles, the Trapdoor was a lot cheaper than the Sharps rifle, as early models before the 1873 were simply converted muskets. The Remington Rolling Block would have been a superior rifle as well, but cost was the big thing.

    • @stevemiller7433
      @stevemiller7433 Před 5 lety

      I suspect they went with the trapdoor because there were a ton of Springfield rifled muskets around and there was a conversion kit available. cheaper.
