  • Outside Puerto Lopez, Machalilla beach in Manabi is the perfect local spot to eat seafood and take a snorkeling boat tour.
You can support my work and get behind the scenes access and tips I don't share here at / ayngelina
Staying in Puerto Lopez, we were supposed to take an Isla de la Plata tour aka Poor Man's Galapagos. But it was cancelled at the last minute so we decided to have a beach day at Los Frailes National Park. Unfortunately it was a holiday weekend and everyone else wanted to go there too with a long line of cars.
So instead we decided to keep driving just around the corner. We had checked out Machalilla before, it's just on the other side of Los Frailes and is beautiful.
Immediately we were approached to take an hour long boat tour of Machalilla for $10/person. We had no idea there would be a guide, we'd see a penguin, lots of birds and amazing coastline.
If you want to take the tour head to the end of the beach by the fishermen and there are people selling the tours on the weekends. But our guide Karina said you can send her a whatsapp message and book one in advance and it can be arranged during the week as well.

My town, Machalilla! Outstanding job covering the Los Ciriales neighborhood where most of the tourism is being developed on the south end. I live in the last house on the north end towards Sombrerito. There are 3 lodges here, but it's very quiet and private compared to Los Ciriales. FYI, if you hike El Sombrerito again, you can continue on the trail south from the lookout point, and the trail will come down to Playa el Descanso de la Tortugas, and Playa la Planchada. It is a little sketchy, but not near as intimidating as the trail down to Playa Rosada. From there, you can walk the beach south all the way back to Machalilla. However, the rocky point between Planchada and Machalilla is submerged at high tide, so the whole trip must be coordinated with the tides. It takes about 2 and half hours (at a very slow pace) to get from the parking area on E15 to my house in Machalilla. If you come, back, let me know and I will hike it with you!

I have filed a complaint to the PN machalilla, tourism board of manabi and ministry of tourism about that ridiculous, insensitive, irrational and defaming post. If you check their post now, they have deleted most of the comments and they have mute new ones. I was actually reached out by someone who says works in the park, apparently the issue is that we didn’t get a permit to shot video there. Andres reminded me that when we were snorkeling there was a navy boat right next to us. And I found the video footage of this.
I am in 100% agreement that things should be done properly. After all Andres is a national guide and we follow rules. But honestly I don’t believe it is realistically a tourist’s responsibility to check that a tour has proper papers etc. the navy was out on the water that day and there were a number of community led tours and they did nothing.
