It's only a 3 minute drive from Mompiche and then a 50 cent boat ride to this gorgeous Ecuadorian beach that looks like it could be in Mexico. Soft white sands and beautiful warm water. You can stay overnight on Isla Portete but it's not necessary as it's close enough to be a day trip from Mompiche.
Although we went for the day I would love to stay overnight as the only sounds are the wind through the palm trees and the waves.
And if you're going to go eat anywhere try Comedor Karen but make sure Nellie is working.
Isla Portete is considered the first free settlement for Afro-Ecuadorians in all of the Americas.
During the times of slavery, people were kidnapped from Africa. And brought to these colonial settlements, a lot of them went to Peru to work in the gold mines. However, along the way, there were a lot of shipwrecks actually in the Esmeraldas area. In this case, it looks like there are 17 people that survived a shipwreck and then they settled here .
In the main square there is a statue to recognize this. This monument is of Alonso de Illescas. So this was a slave who took on his slave owner's name and but he did quite well and was a big part of that business.
So at one point, they were bringing slaves from Panama down to Peru to work in the gold and silver mines and it crashed, just off this island. And so both Alonso and 16 others made their way, they survived on this island. Now they’ve left this island. And that's because they thought that they were too much out in the open and that maybe the Spanish would come looking for them.
So they went deeper into Esmeraldas, into the mountains and the jungle there, the forest there.

Ayngelina, This video on Isla de Portete was delightful. I could not get over the scenic views of the beach and of its scenery. The food was very tempting. Your discussion of the history of the island was super interesting. The drone footage was also stunning. The clearness of the water and the amount of fish makes Isla de Portete a must destination when one is in Esmeraldas, Ecuador!

Thank you for sharing Isla Portete. Claudette and I went up there in 2017 and spent a night in Mompiche and the next day we walked the island to look at a property that was for sale. It's truly a paradise.
How much were properties there?
@@ayngelina The bamboo house with the outdoor kitchen and all the bedrooms and 6 or 7 showers was 150k. We were thinking of building a new one and moving the existing further back. When walking back on the beach we received our offer on the Manglaralto home which is a bungalow with 3 beds and 3 baths, a swimming pool with 100' of frontage overlooking the ocean which can not be accessed at high tide as it's on a point.

Almost always Spanish! It is interesting to see what comes up as a third language on each video as it changes.

I'll like going to Manabí, Spondilus route, SEE the ocean, breath air fresh, eating healthy fish, bolones, ceviche and more You know, the food is good , 7 years I didnt return at Home , so I hope next November I Will be there.

I am so happy that you got to Isla Portete, it is extremely beautiful there and I would recommend it to anyone.
The water temperature is great to cool off and the food we had there was great except for the Concha but then again it was the black Concha and I was told it is not as good as another kind that you can get. The people were kind enough to cook just a couple of the Concha two different ways for me to try and my face was hilarious when I tried it.
Hope you have a chance to return.
Black conch is unique to Ecuador but actually also endangered so it's good you don't like it as you should not eat it.

The Shrimp Bolón looks delicious, and appears to have a small glass vessel with more shrimp. Was this a separate item, or included with the bolón?
They gave it with the bolon as the jugó, which is why we were so disappointed with lunch as we paid more than double but received so little.

Esto no me molesta porque así es como se ve la playa naturalmente. Todavía está crudo sin mucho turismo.
