The things you do when you are young, will effect you when you least expect it to. Any regrets, wrong doings, or things you should have done will come back to haunt you.
I don't feel old, yes I have aches and pains from doing things I did years ago without any problems but I have life experience which stops me making the same mistakes I did when I was younger, and if those aches and pains are more annoying than usual I get free prescriptions! After 15 years in the army and seeing young boys dying before my eyes I count every birthday as a bonus. That and the love of a good wife and a tall handsome son. It still gives me a thrill when he calls me 'Dad'. I'm trying to get him into a bit of DIY but as yet nothing. He'll come running when he moves into his own place! "Dad, how do I wire a plug?"😂
I'm 9 years behind you. What always strikes me is how your past gradually gets erased while you are still here. A head full of people that used to populate your world all gone, schools derelict or flattened under new road bypasses, previous work places now covered with houses, countless pubs gone and a country that you no longer recognise. On the upside I still have my LP collection, a Garrard record player and an unopened bottle of trendy 1980s aftershave. Have a whole stack of Mike Oldfield, T Rex, Nick Drake etc. My nephew's mates used to say, "Who are they?". My great niece will end up getting the lot. Don't know what she will make of all my old stuff.
My biggest regrets is not having the courage to take plunges , ending up watching ships sailing away. Love you videos , gives a real touch of reality in the plumbing world.
I'm surprised that I reached my 8th decade, and was healthy and fit. However, my wife of more than 50 years died rather suddenly last year and this year and out of the blue I had a serious health episode, the first in my life. I would say that enduring these things has diverted me from any "wish I'd" thoughts, especially facing a solitary old age of whatever length. Life is now less a comfortable old age for two together and more like surviving all it throws at me.
All you younger guys out there below 50. I'm 54. I'm now certified old. Help!! 🤣 Your so right when you said you feel younger mentally. My mind is 20 but my body feels 90. Arthritis is horrid. I would't wish that on anyone. Thanks Al. Take care. 👍
Im 71 and i find myself, every so often, cringing and thinking about how selfish i was in my teens and mistakes i made along the way ( mainly through trusting the wrong people). Nowadays, i just wish i could help my daughters, and grandsons more by way of finance. They all work stupid hours, and work to live. Gone are the days when decent paid jobs were plentiful. Hope you and the family are well ❤
Same here. My neighbour next door retired not really through choice but because years of working in the building trade especially out in cold weather has led to increasing health issues. Within weeks he was crawling up the wall with boredom so he got another job.... I see him drive off every morning and smile. I don't get bored at home and every once in a while I realise "I ain't gotta get up at the crack of squirrel s**t for work anymore"😂 Mind you, the wife does.😂😂😂😂😂😂
Make the most of today and enjoy the future , the past is gone and is history to be looked back on and to learn from but you can’t change it forward is the only way.
50 is months away and given the state this country is in I wish I was a lot closer to the end. Would have loved to have been over 18 in the 70s and 80s.
Your only as old as you feel , I’m 63 now and I’m feeling it... Certain things I use to do without thinking about it I now asses before starting and if I feel I’m not up to it I’ll leave it , the aches and pains are gradually getting worse but that’s to be expected the older you get , I’m hoping to retire or just work part time as and when I want to starting next year but I’ll have to see how that works out financially , I count myself lucky being here at my age as I’ve lost a lot of good friends and family members over the years due to illness and accidents but you have to plod on the best you can while you can...!! Cheers Al
Another great video..and what you say is very true... I tend to wake up in the middle of the night and start thinking bad stuff, depressing stuff and it can run away with you! So I start watching videos of yours and other decent folks and I always feel better. So thanks for talking the trouble to make them. Hope your eyes get better soon.
I came across an aphorism that i found useful about forgiveness - so instead of giving ones self a hard time about something that you can't change - let go of the past. Forgiveness means giving up any hope of a better past.
Everyone has regrets, (mainly for what we didn't do). Everyone thinks more about the negative, than the positive. If you put the weight of your positive on one side of a see saw, it will surely well outweigh the negative at the other end. You are a good man Al, very many thanks for your videos. From Wexford, Ireland.
Hi Al, Thanks for the wise words. I`m 71 in a couple of weeks and looking back I made mistakes in life because I didn`t listen to the wise old heads around me but I had some great adventures and intend to have a few more in the time I have left. I saw a great quote recently from Oscar Wilde that goes - "Live with no excuses and travel with no regrets".
I think we all live two lives. The life we learn with, and the life we live with after that. :) I am 78 and truer words were never spoken if you think about it.
Really appreciate the effort that you both put in with the videos. You’re still riding your scooter as in that ‘Good Thing’ FYC clip Al 👍 All these things that come back to bite us and bad memories…..but we’re probably the only ones that remember them. I’m 66 this next month, like you I feel like I’m 21. It’s all destiny isn’t it. Sometimes it’s not what we’d prefer ☹️
Don't ever regret doing or not doing things in your youth. You can't change it and it will eat you up as the years pass. It's called growing up. Just enjoy things Al, and enjoy the free prescriptions!
Wise words Al. I'm 69 and YOU are my favourite "virtual" internet Grandad!!! Over the years I have learned that mostly "poop" happens! Like animals in nature we learn to cope and adapt to survive! However!.......Very occasionally GOOD LUCK comes your way! And when it does, I say grasp those special moments with both hands and be happy!!! I always look forwards, not back!!!
Hi Al When you're pondering in the garden, just think of all the wisdom you pass to all of us not just in the UK but globally I'm sure. These little nuggets of knowledge you pass on in your videos can be so useful and help ease the stress in our lives. And we all need more of that today! I think you also can hopefully engage the younger generation to realise the satisfaction you get from sorting problems yourself and learning how things work. Schools and universities sadly lack in much needed practical experience. We will all have regrets. That is how we learn and it shapes us often in a positive way. Thanks for being the kind, honest and sincere person that you are.
Oh mate, you've made me feel so much better, like you I sit and ponder on some of the daft things I have done or said in my past. Good advice as always. thank you. I feel a little better now 🙂
Wise words as always Al. Thank you for your great Videos, you have helped me out many times, sometimes I wish I could pick the phone up and ask you for extra advice on a job!
I like to think that regrets are part of the human condition, we all have them. The trick is to learn from them so you can pass that knowledge onwards. But nobody is perfect, mistakes and regrets will always be, it's a way that we learn.
Those quiet moments of peace and contemplation. Often when the catalogue of regrets gets pushed before your conscience and opened 😅 I’m 42 now and as time goes on pages seem to be added. For the things we can’t change, perhaps as long as we can reflect and atone, there is goodness in it.
Hi Al , good video, I hear what you are saying, but the funny thing is I was very reserved when I was young and wouldn’t say boo to a goose but now that I am old I speak my mind if the situation calls for it , but only if it calls for it 🤷 , my wife tells me that is my dementia kicking in 😁, keep well Al , keep active and try not to ponder life to much as many who have gone before us have tied themselves in knots trying to work that one out 👍.
Very true words. I guess very few get through life without any misgivings but I agree with you. Very true of hospital visits too. How did the cataract op go? Perhaps a video on your experience??
Just sit back and enjoy your time there was a song there’s wasn’t they, Happy days but the wife got plenty of work to keep you busy 😂😂😂😂😂🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴👌👍🇬🇧🏴🏴
Why can't we gain wisdom faster as we're growing up ?????? When you're young you sometimes have no 'filter' & say things out of character & then it's too late, it's said! As you get older you realise! THERE'S NO SUBSTITUTE FOR EXPERIENCE 😊keep uo the wisdom on the channel, love it & can associate with it mate 👍 🎉
Hi Al Sound advice as usual you and I could probably return to work and make serious money but would we want to. I did an apprenticeship in plumbing and heating and later in electrical engineering and I've seen and heard so many inappropriate comments made by so many (some hooded by the ubiquitous 1030 newspaper/coffee break) that I feel we are now qualified to do anything with nothing. When I was working on a job with lots of trades I would put up a sign "Please Play Nicely So We Can All Go Home HappY" Take Care (from a like minded MOD)
What I find with getting older that the younger generation don't seem as worldly wise as i was at that age ... or was i daft back then and never realised.
I’d say it’s awful in the uk especially when health catches up with you and desperately dealing with terrible NHS, Ambulance & GP service. Not to mention the appalling uk retirement pension. Over here in Luxembourg pension is 5000€ per month and instant health services. Downside is that for very complex procedures you might have to go to France or Germany depending which language you prefer, although everyone speaks English. We don’t have any pot holes either. Very depressing on occasional visits to Robinson Crusoe (brexit) Island!
Quick unrelated question, but how much water would a leaking flush cone approximately use. As my water company has stated one of the four properties on the shared line is using 20 litres an hour. I've also checked the cistern tank with food colouring to see if the cistern tank is leaking and top of the pipe. The last plumber installed the pipe and inch too short, so fixed it by wrapping PTFE tape around the top of it too.
One of my favourite sayings, "Never complain about getting old - it's a privilege denied to many".
Very true.
