I love how literally no one has ever in the history of these mods has ever bothered to make the usb cut precise.
This definitely looked like more trouble than it was worth, especially since the ribbon cables didn't come precut. It is good to see you were able to make it work, despite some of the issues and the end result.
I think you should try out the newer capture system you talked about in the end, especially considering some of the more notable benefits that brings compared to this one you had just installed. I've been looking into installing a capture board on my 3ds for a while and if the new one you talked about at the end works well, I might just go for that instead.
This mod for me seriously make emulation even more worth it, I know that Im leaving a lot on the table, but if I want to enjoy my 3DS in a monitor or TV, I would fire up Citra 100% of the times instead of opening up my real 3DS to do that mod
Taki Udon did a video on a recent rumor about an OLED and video out mod for the switch lite. I'm super excited to see that. I hope that turns into a Techwave in the near future.
Love seeing these 3DS mods. My dream mod would be to have a USB-C mod that completely replaces the present charging port. Then from there, get this one USB-C port to do three things:
1. Charge the 3DS
2. Be able to output AV over a USB-C to HDMI cable
3. Be able to work with Wii U homebrew to where you plug the 3DS into the Wii U via USB-C to USB-A and be able to play 3DS games on your Wii U using the GamePad as the bottom touch screen and controller and the TV as the top screen or to display both screens at the same time for video capture.
I know there's some homebrew out there that let's you wirelessly stream your 3DS at 30 fps to the Wii U and send inputs back to the 3DS but the idea of having a stable wired connection at 60 fps on Wii U is just really enticing to me. I have the official Nintendo new3DS XL charging dock and I always imagined if it had a USB-C connector that it could be like a Switch dock for the 3DS, a 3DS Player dock like the old Game Boy Player. Oh and for the few who have 3D displays, it'd be nice to have 3D video output via HDMI or Wii U.
The german installer have that as an option
This already exists at least for the first two. Look up fingercramp mods
You would have to be a genius or a very dedicated individual to do all of these by yourself, however, I cheer for your dream and wish you the best on your work!
Wow, you spent a lot of time thinking about this huh
This looks like absolute hell. Props to you for sticking with it.
You lost me at cutting out the ribbon cables, on top of soldering next to the main chip 😅 Good on you for doing this mod, though. Definitely not one I'd be willing to do myself.
12:06 Last month I actually got my New Nintendo 3DS XL modded with that exact USB C capture card and it works much better than the snicker-stream wireless option. Also it didn’t have any strange color distortion like the one you did. I highly recommend that you test that one out because it seems to be the best one out on the market right now.
I went and sent my 3ds to the guy you mentioned modsville told you about and I can tell you that having that charging while outputting video is fantastic!
Wait what? Glasses still coming in the mail?
Its been a year🤣
All digital Jon
For an all streaming future
They got leaked to someone else's face.
@@youwayoAll (adorably) digital Jon.
Wow congrats on that build. I would love to see you try the newer capture thing !
bottom screen can be fixed in the software, this definitely isn’t something you did wrong hardware-wise
I saw a similar issue with the bottom screen on a video by Elliot from the Retro Future. He just messed with the settings on the PC application to fix it.
9:30 I bought a capture card on ebay a few years ago and had this issue too - there's a 'Calibration' option in the software that lets you adjust some of the settings until the picture looks right.
I really like these types of videos. Thank You!!
I’ve been waiting for this one Jon 💪🏻💪🏻
I installed the newer 3DS XL capture mod mentioned at the end. You can install the mod without soldering the ribbon cable IF you don't want audio out from the USB-C port. If you're willing and able, you can output audio via the 3.5mm jack that already comes with the New 3DS XL with proper audio cables (and maybe a Ground loop isolator to drown out the static).
Aside from that, the newer mod is far more easier to install and possibly less buggy than the older one form Optimize. I highly recommend it.
I have one of these kits in my 3DS LL and I love it, fortunately I live in Japan and was able to send my system in to have it installed for me though. I consider myself pretty good at soldering and do most console mods myself, but I didn't even want to risk it with this one. Good on you for giving it a shot!
I’m definitely interested in that new USB-C one, would love to see if it’s something that can be pulled off with a bit less fine soldering
I hope theres a variation on the future that uses a mini hdmi or mini display port on the card instead of a micro-usb.
man i hate mini i wish it was just a all in one usb c type of thing booth charging and display outpout on the same port.
@@odin8214 Well, that will be happening more in the near future than anything else. Remember that usb Type-C has been set to be the standard about 7 years ago, so all these older plug types have been dropping in cost so that's why they are being used until the stock is all gone.
And this is when I pull out the emulator!! Spawn Wave is a beast!
I did not skip the sponsor part for you man! Keep up the good work!
you do realize it doesnt help him unless you buy something right?
@@BooleanDevThe extra viewing time itself is helping him.
I'd be interested to see you install the newer version you mentioned of this if you do decide to get it. Good video!
Please order the updated version and do a video with that. I would love to try the newer more user friendly option. Cutting the ribbon cables is a bit daunting. Great content as always!
Definitely would like to see you try the other mod out as well.
Elliott Coll just did a video on a couple of systems with capture cards and there was just a setting on the PC he changed to make the bottom screen look better.
Great video! I'd be too scared to do this.
That's really cool, but looked tricky as hell. Good job!
Looking at the bottom screen it kind of looks like when my HDR screen tries to show RGB in HDR mode. On windows when taking a screen shot on something that is on the HDR screen for example.
So not sure at all if this is related, but could be the software, graphics card and screen that is causing some trouble and not nessecary your soldering. All colors are there just very light tinted so feels like it could be something else at least. :)
I’d love to see the other mod update as well. I’m still a huge 3DS user and this video out capability is awesome!
Looks great at the TV, wonder if the other kit one will look that good?
The card you showed at the end was what I was hoping this video was about
This is one of those mods which I would *love to do* but this is genuinely way to advanced for even good solderers
Couple years a go was a Tokio based brand that sold N3DS with a similar kit or installed it on your own console in a couple hours, and they instal the capture usb c port on the existing charger (you can play and charge it at same time) or replace the infrared port with it. Unfortunately were sued by Nintendo and the brand disappeared, you can buy one for a former owner but they’re insanely expensive. Also there is an alternative to stream from a software moded console, but its a bit laggy depending your network speed connection
Yes we do want to see the new video output 3dsxl mod. If that one if actually not too bad I would actually buy it
hey spawn wave you should do a review of the nexigo hall effect gripcon gamepad with a bulit in switch dock
I enjoy these videos. A nice break from all the drama in the gaming industry.
@SpawnWave Yes, please make a video with the second mod kit you mentioned. Thank you.
I just saw and Elliot Coll video where the bottom screen colour looked off until a value was changed, the clock speed maybe.
This is neat, but looks like a nightmare. Maybe it is time to get into 3DS emulation, hmm...
See thats the problem with handhelds like these. You can never really get the same experience on emulator due to all the custom stuff with the system.
@@ryan20028switch will join the issues
Or with modded you can just stream wirelessly
@@caramellesweggose Well, the wireless option is garbage. Low quality and frame drops. At least that is what I experienced last time I tried it.
Edit:
The fact it actually works is pretty cool. It just ain't good for actually capturing gameplay.
@@_NekOzit isn’t you just suck. Skill issue
Low volume in this one somehow
You should see if you can change the bottom screen clock speed in the PC software and see if that fixes the color issues.
Definitely would be keen to seen the updated more refined kit
Honestly you should have gotten the loopy new 3dsxl capture board it's alot easier
I love my 3DS. Recently I’ve been playing it a lot and it’s crazy all the features it has compared to the Switch. More 3DS mods please.
Yes! More 3ds content!
does the audio go through the usb as well? if not, i'll just stick with snickerstream and a homebrew'd ds
I really want to do this as well as a controller port mod. Even put it in a custom case to consolize it
3:29 oooof. Looks like you sliced right into cooper line. Why did you slice so close?
I hope you do a follow up on the USB-C capture card and compare the two.
I’d love to see another video on that (hopefully) easier capture card mod
Thank you for this video!! Happy Super Bowl Sunday everyone! Have an awesome day!! Comment on who ya got tonight for the championship. Thank you once again Spawnwave!
Someone on Twitter already suggested a newer, better and easier to install screen grabber to Jon. And he said he will try to get his hands on one.
BUT, he didn't say if this will be a video or not and the new set usually takes some time to arrive.
It would be super cool to have the top screen on a TV and be able to use something like a retro handheld or switch lite as a controller with a touchscreen
Hey Jon. Do you know you can softmod your 3ds and use bootntr and snickerstream to stream it Wireless to your pc? Its so much easier although requires a cable for audio.
Would love a video on the new kit. :)
I’m wondering why you went through the soldering process instead of the modding process to achieve similar results?
Yeah!...get that possibly better option to install...looking forward to it....
I have a merki capture card (for my 2DSXL) and I paid to have him install it. It's been working fine for 4 years with audio and video, only issue is that it requires specific windows software and drivers to be viewed which kinda sucks.
Loopy's N3DSXL kit is solderless if you don't need onboard audio and its pretty easy if you don't mind a little soldering. Only $120 and it's based in the US with sellers in UK. You can ship you console to him to get it done for only $80+shipping. You cant beat that anywhere.
Awesome do the other one do you have a link for the one that is usb type c
I don't understand how you know how to do all of this I have to say it's very impressive
For anyone that has gotten the USB C mod, do you guys have issues with how hot it gets? The bottom of my 3DS gets toasty and wonder if that is causing issues as sometimes if i bump the cable it disconnects for a sec. I paid to send it in and have it modded i didnt do it myself
Yeeeeah I think I'll stick to the homebrew streaming options even if they aren't as efficient 😅
Hope you wore those safets glasses when cutting with the dremel. That stuff can go south in no time.
Would be good to see how the new one is installed
I wish I had half this guy's skills. Maybe I could fix my Original XBOX that is just sitting in the garage rotting along with all the games I can no longer play. Ugh.
I would have used a replacement back shell to keep the OEM shell in tact
The one shown at the end looks like Loopy's site; and those are the best around. But it depends on their availablity.
I'd be interested if the installation wasn't such a horror.
The AyaNeo Flip DS has been mentioned before, that sounds like the much nicer choice despite emulation.
The problem with the bottom screen looks to be a calibration error in the 3DS streaming software on your PC, if you would mess with the bottom screen settings I'm sure you'd be able to fix it! Coming from experience with the same card!
happy to see the 3ds mod community growing up
still waiting for custom reshells and hinges lmao
Yeah I think I'll just pay someone to do this for me 😭. Interested in seeing if the newer kit is an easier install.
When I first saw the thumbnail I thought it was going to be the kit you showed at the end of the vid. That’s the one I have and it looks way easier to install than your kit.
I think I'd rather use snickerstream to do video capture over Wi-Fi on my custom firmware 3DS. It's a lot easier than this. Still cool though.
I wish it was easy, Tons of People Including me Can't get it ever working Correctly is the issue And nobody has any solutions to this so....
While I haven't used it in quite some time, I don't remember having any real problems with it. I just followed the instructions and it worked fine for me. Only major problem was that it didn't stream audio, but you can just plug in an aux cord for that.@@starliht7741
Problem is the connection with it is rather terrible.
I’m not sure if there’s any retailers for 3ds capture cards anymore. Katsukity and Merkai were the two that did them regularly outside of the Americas. Loopy3ds did old3ds models, but I am not sure if any of them still manufacture them anymore. I’d recommend just either sending your 3ds out to get modded or just getting a new one sent to you with the capture card installed already.
the 3dscapture is better for this (and they offer an install process)
it also supports audio output via the usb-c and both screens are captured properly
i have one in my 3ds systems and have no issue with it
also its by loopy which is a well known member in the ds/3ds modding scene you can trust it will be done well
its also been around for a long time (as you can tell from the site using an image of a regular old 3ds), he no longer offers for any system but n3dsxl but its still neat
theres also a ds phat one offered but it does not output audio and youre going to want to ground the audio connection if you want the annoying (but almost unnoticeable) popping gone (its mostly only noticeable when the system is off)
also the audio can be captured with the system muted and both the speakers and headphone jack are functional still after having it done
Best setup on PC is Citra, two joycons or for touch screen games, one joycon in one hand and pen for a drawing tablet in the other.
Any way to use Switch pro controllers on the 3DS?
Newer kit looks interesting also.
The bottom screen looking like that is a software problem not hardware thankfully, if you go into the Calibration menu there's a bunch of settings you can adjust and one of them should be an option to fix the bottom screen. I have one of these kits so I know the struggle of getting everything to work perfectly.
Why wouldn't they pre-cut the ribbon cables? That looks like way too much trouble for a personal DOY project. I wouldn't even bother with it no matter how skilled I was.
the loopy new 3ds capture card has usb-c and is a lot easier to install you should do a video on that one it doesn't require cutting the shielding off or soldering around the cpu either, it does require shell cutting but you grind it away to make it thinner instead of just cutting a hole in the bottom.
Oh just got to the end of the video and you talk about it lol. I put one of these in my 3ds id recommend it. I use it to play nds games on my crt via my computer and it looks great
Would love to see you do the easier mod too!
Yes, do that new capture card with USB-C, please.
Would love to see the new install
I'd really like to see a video with the newer one, mainly to see the difference in installation.
I don't know where to ask..
I got a SD micro 512 card and formatted it into Fat32 and it partly worked... but my Themes quit working (showing, they were installed) and certain titles quit wanting to load. others did play fine.
What happened?
The 3DS probably has trouble addressing all the memory in such a large card. Maybe try a smaller one? According to the internet, the 3DS officially supports up to 32GB cards, but some comments say 128 works decently.
Dang that looks tough.
Yeeessss YEEEESSSSS!!! 3DS VIDEO WOOOOOO
Yeah please do order the better kit, interested in how difficult that one is
I still have my modded loopy 3DS from back in the Pokemon XY days.
Does anyone know where i can get the a hinge cap for my 2ds XL?
I wonder if they got a kit for the New Nintendo 2DS system.
Also, if you're emulating it via Citra, then why not use a cheap bluetooth Touch Controlled Monitor that you can just put on your lap? Or haven't we figured out splitting the gameplay onto 2 seperate screens with that emulator yet?
Once he said “LEVEL 5” I was like “yeah nope” 😂
I wanted to get into capturing video so I had bought a N3DS XL with a capture card from JP back when very few capture devices were around. But I never actually used it this way in the long run 😅
Maybe I should try again??? Nah, maybe when I retire 🤣
Would love to see the better mod in a video. It's weird how all of the video out mods that I've seen require connecting to a computer instead of just plain HDMI out.
Cutting out the ribbon cables... yeah no way. The newer capture card seems promising though. Would love to see an installation of that one.
It's too bad if you do it the easy way. Use a metal ruler/guide and a fresh Exacto blade. You mark the ends of the cut by first pressing down straight through the ribbon to cut it. Line up the ruler, and one clean slice down against it. If it doesn't cut through fully, just rescore over it until it's free. If you need a video guide, just watch some people cut out small decals for scale models; same concept. Doing it free hand with a big razor like this is way harder.
Oof, you had me until "Micro USB".
That mod looks painfully difficult. Hope it gets a revision or 3.
Years ago I sent mine to Germany and had someone do it for me
