Exactly right. I was only saying that the other day on rainman rays channel-people thesedays just dont gaf about car maintenance and care care,they just drive it until it breaks. This is very irresponsible and dangerous to other road users and themselves. Driving on roads thesedays is very dangerous,the amount of idiots and people that dont know how to drive properly is unbelievable. And dont get me started about elderly citizens that are too old to be driving,these 75 and older senior citizens are a danger to themselves and others,sitting on 70 in a 100 zone,taking up 2 parking spots because they cant judge distances properly in parking bays,not using indicators when required, pulling out in front of traffic not giving way to on coming traffic,the list is endless-these people should be handing in their licences.
I don’t know about where you come from but in Australia you need to pass a registration check every year, these are checks to make sure the car is roadworthy. Not maintaining your car is not dangerous but it will cost you when it comes to rego. And when you reach the age of 70 you need to have a medical assessment and driving test every year to maintain your licence

i was an auto mechanic for 32 years and have seen just about every issue shown in this video. anyone who is an auto mechanic for long enough will see these things a lot.
i used to do a lot of steering,suspension and brake work and i can't tell you how many cars i have seen with steering components ready to fall out or literally tied back together and the car driven to the shop that way!!
One of my faves was a lady in ,car shutting down as she pulled in. My car just quit OMG. Flip key, low fuel light-guage at bottom. Ma'am you understand this light? It just means i need fuel before long? Umm yes. Smh. So I did a brief theory of how fuel keeps an intank pump cool. Don't think a word got through. Lmao

I’m not even an intern mechanic, and I’ve seen every single one of these, I just fix cars for my neighbors when their cars just don’t want them to be towed and I am just the guy who gets them into drivable condition to drive to the shop to let the professionals finish the job. And I’ve seen every single one of these.
Some were poor engineering. Most were abuse or neglect. I have a control arm with a shot bushing,but it can't fall off ,doesn't shake,otherwise I can't tell somethings wrong. I'll get to it sometime.
Yep ! 46 years of rebuilding automatic transmissions and still haven't seen it all yet .
The fact that we drive next to some of these vehicles on the road scares me😂
If you live up north or anywhere they salt the roads when it snows it ices over, you can guarantee some of these death traps are right next to you. I couldn't believe how many rotted out frames I saw in Kansas. And being from Texas all my life, I was baffled at first!
If your in america yeah, Europe not so much, mandatory safety inspections would take the majority off the road.
I took my 2012 GTI to the dealer because it was in limp mode. They gave it back to me, said nothing was wrong, even though the engine light was on. So I took it back and asked them to investigate the engine light, got a different mechanic. Took him for a drive, not even a block later he's like "You need a new high pressure fuel regulator."
These never get old, especially hearing the mechanics gleefully looking past the stupid

@@jzlharvey not always. Sometimes its lazyness. The car is an appliance and they dont pay enough attention, nor do preventive maintenence. They wait till it breaks to fix it and then complain about the high cost.

A former coworker once had some trouble after changing his own oil. He didn’t know how much oil to put in, so he kept filling it until he could see it from the top. 😳

Owners manual(sometimes you need to download) tells you this stuff. Maybe I am unusual for a male but I read the Owners Manual for everything I buy.

I once knew someone who changed the engine and gear oil.
They put the gear oil into the engine, and the engine oil into the gearbox.
The gearbox did not like 10w40, the engine did not like automatic gear box oil. Gearbox blows up, engine seizes. Fun.
I am a retired police officer who did sometime on traffic division, you would not believe the heaps that people drive in and drive others esp. kids . I of course got verbal abuse about impounding vehicles or giving them the forms they had to get repaired but it goes a long way to saving lives.

The United States of America is made up of 50 individual states, and each state has it's own laws concerning things like this.
*Some* of the states require vehicle safety inspections, but most do not.
The US is basically like 50 small countries grouped together, so many laws are different from state to state.
It gets kind of complicated lol but yeah, most of our states don't require a vehicle pass a safety inspection before it can be put on the street.
Cars *are* expected to be in a safe driving condition before heading out on the street, but it's essentially considered the owner's responsibility to guarantee the safety of the vehicle.
So I could, say, register, tag, and insure my 1980 fiat right now, which actually has all the parts for the brake sitting in a big bucket in the passenger seat...
And it would then *technically* be legal for me to drive it on the street.
BUT, if I actually drove it, and then smashed into the back of another car because i *literally* had no brakes, then I would be busted for driving an unsafe vehicle on the street.
Soooo... safety is a legal requirement, but a safety inspection isn't?
I guess it gets kind of complicated lol

I was a tech for 20 years and got out of the business for this kinda stuff. After you tell them what’s wrong, it’s their fault and then the price to fix it they either flip out or say their going to get another opinion. People are to stupid to own a vehicle nowadays. My girl called me a couple of weeks ago to tell me her oil light was on. I said pull over and turn the car off. She told me she would after she got to the mall to finish Xmas shopping. (15 miles away) 🤔

Yeah that was tough to believe, huh? Pretty obvious that the owner didn't even know WTF that thing was. Most vehicles nowadays also sport cabin air filters as well. Mine hasta be checked every 8k and changed every 16k. and its behind the glove box not the easiest place to get to.

I see undercarriage damage from people running over things in the road, and it makes me sad. I see brake rotors completely worn away and just shake my head. But worn out front end components, tie rod ends, upper and lower ball joints falling apart or control arms rotted away scare the shit out of me. We share the road with those death machines.
I was a mechanic in my younger days and I seen a lot of this sort of stuff, especially the brake shoes. She says your brakes make a funny noise the brake pads eaten all the way through the rotor into the cooling fans.
I've never even heard of that outside these videos. My last car, I got new rotors at 60k out of precaution and bc I was replacing the pads anyway. The factory rotors looked great still, I half wondered if I was wasting money.
Is cooling-fin exposure when you keep the original ones for like 200k miles??
I once had a customer that was stone deaf , you should have seen the brakes on her car. The sad part was no one told her about the racket they were making , she just knew they felt funny but couldn't bring it in when she first noticed.

And milage for parts replacement is TOTALLY IRRELEVANT!
You can destroy a set of rotors and pads in 6K miles easy, same with tires. I know becuase I have done it. It's all about how hard you are on your car, or how fast you drive/stop.
Also, for a commercial vehicle, you'd NEVER get 60k on a set of rotors, more like 20K.
@@nthgth no even that wont necessarily wear through to the fins my jeep still has the original rotors up front it's got nearly 500k miles on it and they're way past the point where I should replace them but it isnt being driven due to a blown up axle and a bad slave cylinder but they're still not down to the fins yet pretty far from them actually usually what causes that is when people run them down to the metal baking plate on the pad and keep going like that until this kind of crap happens once I get my new slave cylinder in I'll do the rotors and pads but untill then all I do is move it from one end of my property to the other to get to other things behind it so its not an issue at the moment

I'm not much of a mechanic but these make me feel a lot better about my skills.
You want to learn and that's all you really need. I had to teach myself car mechanics as well, my dad and my brother knew how but wouldn't teach me a thing. I just read books, bought a few tools and did it. It was the most valuable skill I ever learned; and a lot more important than anything I ever learned in a college classroom.
Haynes or Chilton repair manuals are a life saver. Especially when you look into what a job takes, realize you don't know what TDC means and decide to pay somebody to do it. Or scrap the car.
(TDC = Top Dead Center, i.e., when the piston is all the way up, right before it starts its downward movement)
Many many years ago in Europe, to get a drivers license, we had to learn all about the car systems and engine. Also maintenance basics. It was classroom with engine cut out models etc.
Then we had to pass a test on the subjects, on top of the driving test. I had to get our car every year for "white glove" inspection by my father, than take it to the inspection center.

I know I need an oil change and a brake change, and this video is making me worry that i might be grinding my rotors. But I've done that before, so I know what it sounds like. (POS car, was about to scrap it because it had a leaky rear main seal, car was worth about $800. I was going through a 5 quart jug of 20w50 every 7 ish days. And I tried out ALL of the "stop leak" shit you're not supposed to use. Oh well. Scrap yard gave me $140 for it and I learned which "stop leak" works the best at clogging up your engine!)
In the UK we have our cars tested every twelve months for defects, and it can be annoying if you get picked up on something minor and have to go for a retest after a 5 min fix, but I'm so glad it keeps deathtraps like all of this stuff off the road! I'm surprised it's not a thing in the USA, to make sure people aren't driving horrifying accidents waiting to happen.
In some states, yearly inspections are absolutely a thing. In a perfect situation, they make sense. Fix the defect, get your pass, and move on. But I think sometimes a dishonest shop could hold the vehicle's pass hostage, until the vehicle owner coughs it up over something petty.
We do have that here, dishonest shops let a ton of cars go "for a buddy" or for a grift of extra cash.
I wouldn't bet on that. There are a lot of death traps on the roads in UK as well. I work as a part time mechanic and you'd be surprised of how many things i found wrong with some customers cars that just passed MOT. There are things that an MOT inspector can miss, but the driver should notice. Unfortunately car culture in dying in the UK as well. A lot of people don't even know how to top-up theyr washer fluid.

@@MrGafferjim When did that law come in? My local garage does my MoTs and any repair work it fails on that I can't or won't do myself. I do, of course, have the option to drive it away and fix it elsewhere, then return for a free retest within 14 days.

Being in Florida you may occasionally see rust like that if people live near the coast, but rarely to that extent.
Be careful buying any used cars that used to belong to snowbirds, though.
Be thankful, it's all we do up here 24/7 are salt belt rust buckets, seeing clean cars and bolts that don't require heat to remove constantly lol
I too was lucky here in AZ until I hired on at an auto transport company based out of MIchigan. Even worse this fleet holds onto everything regardless of how bad they get. I've seen trailers with 80% of their crossmembers rusted completely out. We started referring to them at bluetooth crossmembers.
There are other cars built from aluminium, fiber glass or stainless steel. The guilt is on the buyer here, as they waste money on cars made from pig iron, same as those houses built of wood panels that fly away in tornadoes. I never seen a brick house fly away.
re: The ATF and brake fluid; asking a auto parts clerk for advice on auto maintenance is like the janitor at a hospital to perform gall bladder surgery.
4:25... My Transit Connect dash lights would sometimes do the exact same thing. Then during a road trip once it not only did that but refused to turn the engine off. I could turn the key to off and remove the key but the engine would just keep running. I managed to fix it by disconnecting the battery for about 10 minutes. That reset the computer apparently and it started working fine again.
Not 100 percent sure but I think I found the original cause a few weeks later. While digging around in the fuse box area I found a computer module of some kind that the prior owner (a company) had installed for the GPS. It basically allowed them to send emails and other data back and forth via whatever GPS they had. Anyway, I think that was messing with the vehicle computer somehow. I yanked that out and the vehicle has run fine for 6 years now.
It is extremely frightening to see what people continue to drive with children in other cars or even their own… It’s probably a good thing that certain parts do you feel or people would be riding around on bare metal until it just stops
That's why, I quit being a mechanic because, all I got was the shitty jobs because "I was good at it" while, the fresh out of school greenhorns, got the nice jobs. It broke my heart but, I had to walk away.
I watched quite a few "greenhorn great mechanics destroy shit" . Don't doubt you , the older wrenches want a break and a laugh. Just a bad shop, or if you were at a stealership, it explains itself. Keep ur skill and knowledge, it will serve u well in life. 👍
5:47 same damn thing happened to me recently but more like 90% of the nut snapped off, and being a mobile tech I didn't have an acetylene torch to just burn it out, so I tried taking the other lugs off, and using my pry bar to try and snap the stud to get the job done and replace the stud. Instead eventually my pry bar slipped, nailed me in the eye and gave me a shiner. Needless to say, I told the dude to take it to a shop that's equipped for that fuckery 🤣
It's really considerate of those customers to remove the asbestos from the brake pads before bringing them in.

After seeing all those rusty cars, I appreciate living in a dry state that doesn't use salt on the roads. Our cars wear out before they rust out.
Glad we've got our compulsory annual test here in the UK. Most of these problems don't happen here.

As a former mechanic, I can appreciate the disgust with customers these mechanics have.
People that don’t work on vehicles should stick to what they know, not what they think they know. Unbelievable 😵🤨😳😵💫 I was having flashbacks of some of the customers that visited the shop I worked at for close to 40 years.
When i was younger i thought i could get a vehicle and not worry too much about anything, ive changed my mind, im not getting anything until i get a better job so i can pay maintenance and never end up like this.

Ohhh Dear, most of these cars fail the german TÜV (Technischer Überwachungsverein, Hauptuntersuchung) 10 years ago. TÜV is a technical inspektion every two years, by law. If the car fail's you must have to maintain or repair it. Last option is the junkyard.
One of the happiest days of my life is when I retired from being a mechanic. The lies people tell to cheat mechanics out of their wages became unbearable. AND, never tell anyone you where a mechanic, not ever.

As someone who lives in a first world country where we have ‘warrants of fitness’ for vehicles to be on the road. It makes me glad not to live in America with these death traps on the road. Vehicles get tested every 6 months to a year depending on the vehicles age on a list of things safety related. You can still kill your motor but they check all the suspension, rust, exhaust, tyres etc

Many years ago I knew a guy that ran a "minor" car repair side-business, he always took still pictures(long before video being common) when the customer description, observed issue, and final conclusion didn't match, some of these videos would fit some of the things he told me about.
Seen enough of these videos and im not sure what scares me more, the condition of some of the cars or the mechanics working on them

I held the flashlight for my father, rebuilt brother’s Chevy 6 cyl., rebuilt numerous other V8 engines for power or economy as well as restored three other vehicles.
It really pains me to see the disrespect people have for their cars. Some should not be allowed to own a car.

I've seen practically every one of these many times. It amazes me how more people haven't died being oblivious to things. And you'd be surprised at how many people say they just had it fixed.
Anymore, it's almost too much of a liability to be a mechanic. Someone comes in for an oil change, next thing you know, they're calling, saying their rear hub/wheel came flying off the car going down the highway. And they accuse you of not fixing the issue. They came in for an oil change and didn't ask about anything else. Then, after your wheel falls off, you state the car was making noise and you assumed it needed an oil change, when it was the hub coming apart on the rear.
So many people try to get over on mechanics. People think we're stupid, when it's them that are stupid.

These always make me feel better about reading the manual for every car I owned and taking them in for routine service and replacement for everything. Mechanics must love me, boring ass customer with everything working fine on my car. LOL
The part with the exhaust pipe pouring water out of it reminded me of the last time I bought gas at a Holiday Station Store.
I had a brake line fail right at the wheel once, had a rotor break apart like a few of these, with the disk separated from the hub part. Thankfully it failed in the mall parking lot and there was enough brake system pressure and three intact rotors for low speed driving to the firestone in another part of the lot.
Annoyed me because that's a repair I'd usually do on my own for a lot less money, but the 30 miles of highway with how my brakes were performing seemed a bit dangerous.
All of y'all blaming the owners, it's important to remember most of these issues happened out of the blue, with no prior warning whatsoever.
No noises, no bad steering, no warning lights, nothing.
Im betting there were clues. And Im betting regular maintenence would have prevented most if not all of those issues

Feelin' pretty damn proud of myself, changing my own pads and rotors all around on my Titan. I even bought the dead blow hammer just in case. Rotors came off like butter.
i cant stand having anything broken on my car. i have no idea how these guys do it. i struggle with being able to afford taking my car to a mechanic so i learnt how to fix them myself. anything even remotely worn out or broken gets fixed asap
I had the water problem with a VW Rabbit convertible. I noticed that the water had pooled up beneath the seats. It was a Saturday and I was going to Habitats For Humanity, so I had my tool belt with me. I took out a 16 penny nail and drove it through the deepest part of the puddle of water... It drained on the way to the build site. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year people.

Fathers teach your kids the basics. Little things like how to read a dipstick, where brake fluid goes, how to change their own oil, fix a flat tire or if your not mechanically inclined at least teach them to have their car checked when they hear strange noises. Im 53 and when i went to high school they had classes that taught this, home ec. and shop classes. I think most schools have phased these out as outdated but I think thats a huge mistake. Then again everyone has their own opinion even if its wrong, just watch the view once to see that
Another important thing is to know when a job is too big for you to handle and it is time to go to a mechanic.
@@thenthson Your exactly right. It depends on the person and how mechanically inclined they are. For instance years ago I had alot of guys at work tell me to go to a mechanic to get my CV axle changed. Instead I pulled it, then took it to a shop that replaces all the bearings, boots, repacks them and basically returns you a new CV axle. Pulling the axle I was comfortable with but I didnt have the tools to rebuild one so I went to the specialist. Know your limits

That clip with the Cockroaches reminded me of a time when I was checking for a drain leak in a bar sink and I had to remove the panel covering where the leaking pipe was and after removing the panel I looked inside and it was real dark but it looked like the walls were moving and as soon as I shined the flashlight the horror was like right out of a movie. The walls under the sink were covered with roaches which scattered as soon as the light hit them. It freaked me out and I jumped back about 5 ft. in shock from the surprise. Nice!
10:14 is scary. That's a Roadmaster, Impala SS or Caprice Classic. I recognized the 'home plate' air baffle immediately. It has a mechanical fan, so it's either an L99 or a tow package LT1. I hope I never see this in my 1996 Buick Roadmaster sedan

Just do your regular maintenance and servicing, especially thermostat and flush at regular intervals. They can cook in a just a few minutes if it's not right. Most (all) of these cars are people who didn't do regular servicing or just did oilies themselves (or jiffy lube). There's a reason manufacturers give a schedule for things to be checked/replaced.

It would be interesting to get some of the descriptions of the problems. In this video, there is a new truck with a “$15-20K fix”. There is fluid all over the garage floor. What fluid? What happened? It would be an interesting detail to know.

One of my favorites was a car belonging to the husband of one of the ladies in the dealership's office. "Stan's car didn't start this morning. When you have it in, can you look at the brakes? It pulls left when you stop." The right brake had gone past worn out, the pad's steel backing ground the rotor off of the hub, but held it in place by the seized caliper

@@Fetidaf I've had several friends and family need replacement engines because the oil change places have left the filter off, didn't remove the old filter o-ring, no gasket for the drain plug, etc., just dumb things that they miss, goofing around, not paying attention, in a rush.
@@angelalane1307 about a week after I bought my car I smelled burning oil on my way to work, since it was a newer car (10k miles) I didn’t think much of it… until I stopped and saw a glimpse of smoke in my headlight.
I pulled into a parking lot and sure enough, the oil filter was loose. Luckily it’s on top and has a lip around it to catch a little spill so I just wiped it all down and tightened it. It smelled like burning oil for the next couple weeks but it could’ve been a lot worse if it had dropped much more onto the exhaust manifold which was directly below it.
I’ve always double checked things like lug nuts, drain plugs, filters etc when having someone service it but I didn’t even think to when buying a car

Being a female mechanic/state vehicle inspector is the best especially when you tell people what their car needs to legally pass or I recommend getting fixed soon. Nobody likes listening to a woman tell them they need to fix things, they messed up or their car is a POS... Had a guy once ask for a second opinion from a male coworker and he looked right at the guy and said "if she's telling you that you need to replace this you better, she has bigger balls than I do and she knows what she's talking about."
For anyone who's never worked in a gas station - the early years of my automotive career were spent in gas station garages - you'd be amazed at how often people whose cars are on fire drive into gas stations. And park on the fuel pump island. Sometimes blocking traffic.
I may be over exaggerating slightly, but I swear we had one a week during the summer (almost always during the summer) pull in, with flames, demanding that we do something. Oh, and get mad when the boss charged them for the fire extinguisher.
