Jaguar XJS centre console is a mess, also known as the Ski slope, here's how I repaired it.

  • Welcome to Driven Floored.
After some Ebay madness and a plan to get an XJS to take on bridal duties at my daughters wedding, I found a moorland green v12 that needed some cosmetic TLC but seemed mechanically and electrically sound - was it a crazy idea?
This video goes into some detail about how I have repaired the wood covered centre console with a black fabric. The style works in my view and looks similar to how these cars started life on earlier models.
It was an interesting journey of discovering how to do it - I've never done it before and as will be obviously don't really know what I'm doing!
Thanks for joining me today. It really helps if you click the like button, subscribe to keep in touch and let me know what you think in the comments!
This is an Ebay link for the DC Fix material I used:

Great work, when i did a 6 speed swap in mine all that lamination crumbled to pieces... I'll be sure to steal this idea hehe

you're welcome :) ...although it was a bit of time the cost was almost nothing and the result still surprises me when I get in!

I have an X100 XKR which has a lot of XJS in it. I'm quite envious of how easy the XJS skislope is to pull apart compared to the XK. XK has a bezel around the jgate that loves to crack when removed that you basically need to make a special tool to remove.

@@iainbagnall4825 I often remember my first classic about 20 years ago, a triumph Vitesse - must be about the easiest car to work on, little engine, lots of space, big clam bonnet - I had an XKR for a while, black one, loved it, bags of pace and still a lovely refined jag ride - I'm sure you enjoy it despite the bezel :)

I have a 1988 XJS Hess & Eisenhardt convertible that actually shipped with black vinyl on the ski slope. I like how yours turned out and the material grain looks perfect! My question is, its been a year and a half... how has the adhesive lasted? any peeling or bubbling? Would you recommend that material in a dry, hot environment? (Arizona USA) Thanks! - Eric

Hi Eric, that’s interesting I didn’t know such a car existed :) the work has lasted very well, honestly looks as good as the day I fitted it. Arizona is another question! We had a few weeks with temps at late 80s last summer and through the winter it’s often freezing but I know that’s not the kind of heat you get there. Maybe if the car is often in direct sunlight it could end up causing damage but I’ve been very impressed with it so far.

You could have gotten the same results with a piece of birdseye maple veneer, some adhesive and a vacuum bag. Very nice job but I am more in favor of the original look of the wood console.

I agree but I decided I didn’t have the skills for the veneer… maybe I’ll try one day. Thanks for watching!
